Krzesinski shatters 10,000 meter record at Drake Relays; Six champs for FHSU women’s track at FHSU Open

Fort Hays State track and field hosted the Fort Hays State Open on Friday (Apr. 28) at the new FHSU Track and Field Facility. The majority of the women’s team attended the home event but a few others went to the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

Micki Krzeskinski had a big performance at the Drake Relays on Thursday when she shattered the Fort Hays State record in the 10,000 meter run and claimed fourth place with her time of 35:02.67. The time was also good for a provisional mark and the 11th fastest time in the nation. The time was over 80 seconds faster than Joan Jilka’s 1983 time of 36:23.34, a record that stood for 34 years.

On Friday (Apr. 28) the Tiger 4×200 team of Amber Forbes, Linsdey Shupe, Tanoudji Diarra and Kelly Wycoff picked up a third place finish with a time of 1:40.41.

In Hays the Tigers turned in five first place finishes, two second place finishes and seven third place finishes.

Alexcia Deutscher picked up the only provisional of the day for the women with her first place finish in the javelin of 143 feet. Her toss was not as good as a prior mark this year as she already sits third in the nation.

Also earning first place finishes on the day were Selam Bell in the pole vault (11 feet, 0.25 inches), Yessenia Gonzalez in the 3000 meter steeplechase (12:12.20), Kylee Poague in the 400 meter hurdles (1:04.74), Mariah Hammersmithh in the triple jump (36 feet, 9 inches) and Baja Robinson in the shot put (43 feet, 6.5 inches).

Courtney Geiger was runner-up in the discus with a toss of 136 feet, 2 inches and Peri Lange took home a second-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.49.

Third place finishers included Laramey Leakey in the pole vault (9 feet, 6.5 inches), Haley Gottschalk, Poague, Sharee Zombo and Lange in the 4 x 100 (51.57), Robin Ritseme in the high jump (5 feet, 3 inches), Poague in the 100 meter hurdles (15.40), Courtney Batchman in the 400 meter hurdles (1:07.26), Tessa Durnell in the 5000 meters (20:03.16) and Remi Behrends in the triple jump (34 feet, 9.5 inches).

TMP-Marian softball drops two in Salina

SALINA, Kan. – The TMP-Marian softball team dropped both of their games at the Sacred Heart triangular in Salina Thursday. The The Monarchs lost 3-2 to Hays High and 8-7 to the host Knights, snapping their 10-game winning streak.

Alison Helget gave up three runs on four hits without recording an out in the first inning in game one. Bailey Lacy came in and struck out nine without a walk  but the Monarchs could muster only two runs off Jaysa Wichers.

TMP-Marian fell behind 8-3 after two innings in the second game against Sacred Heart. They would rally with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth but could get no closer. Helget gave up five runs, one earned, on two hits. Lacy struck out seven and allowed one earned run in four innings of relief.

Anna Gottschalk had four hits and Meagan Brin drove in two as the Monarchs fall to 11-5.

Broncos find their left tackle in first round of NFL draft

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – John Elway continued injecting some venom into his offensive line Thursday night when he selected Utah left tackle Garett Bolles with the 20th pick of the NFL draft.

That’s the lowest the first O-lineman has ever come off the board in the modern draft.

Four days earlier, Elway expressed confidence he could find a starting-caliber left tackle in a class relatively weak on offensive linemen.

The Broncos missed the playoffs last season for the first time in his six-year tenure. So, Elway went about adding some nastiness in the trenches this offseason. He signed free agents Domata Peko and Zach Kerr on defense and Ron Leary and Menelik Watson on offense.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Bolles, a punishing run blocker, fits the same nasty profile.

A troubled teenager, Bolles went the junior college route before going one-and-done at Utah, where he was named first-team All-Pac 12.

The 24-year-old served his Mormon mission in Colorado Springs.

“I love Colorado. I have a heart there because those are the people I taught on my mission,” Bolles said at the combine, where he ran a 4.95 40-yard dash. “If I end up going there, I’d be just fine.”

An emotional Bolles held his newborn son, Kingston, as he walked on stage at draft headquarters in Philadelphia and declared, “Denver, I’m coming back home!”

Bolles said he not only brings good footwork to the pros but also a maturity born from his wayward past.

“I have a plan, I have a mission. When you become a husband and you become a father, you have to sort of grow up and you have to become the person you want to be. And I plan to do whatever it takes,” Bolles said. “And I don’t even know the old Garett, in case you guys were wondering. … I don’t even know who that old Garett is.”

Well, on the field, he still recognizes him.

“When I’m on the field, I want to put people in the dirt,” Bolles said. “And that’s what I’m here for. As an offensive lineman, you want to be the nasty (jerk) that you can be. And whoever’s in front of me, I want to drive them and put them in the dirt. So I’m just going to try to be that every single day.

“And when I come off the field, I love my family. I just learned how to turn the switch to go back to the new Garett.”

Chiefs move up to take QB Mahomes 10th overall in draft

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs boldly moved up in the NFL draft on Thursday night to select Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the 10th overall pick, giving them an heir apparent to veteran Alex Smith.

Kansas City sent its first-round picks this year and next year and one of two third-round picks in this year’s draft to Buffalo, climbing from the No. 27 pick to take the second QB off the board. North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky went to the Chicago Bears second overall, while Heisman Trophy winner Deshaun Watson of Clemson went to the Houston Texas at No. 12.

“Right now, Patrick isn’t absolutely ready to play. He’s got some work to do,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “But he’s coming into a great room, he has an opportunity to learn from Alex, which will be a great for him. We have to have some patience with him, but he has tremendous upside.”

It’s the third time in the common draft era that Kansas City has taken a quarterback in the first round, and the first since Todd Blackledge in 1983. Mahomes is also the second QB to be taken in the first round by a Reid-coach team following Donovan McNabb with Philadelphia in 1999.

He also drew some comparisons to another protégé of Reid: Brett Favre.

“They’re different players. Brett is a Hall-of-Fame player. This kid has a long way to go before that,” Reid said, “but when you have an opportunity to talk to them and be around him and feel a certain energy, and then you see him practice, you’ll see a certain intensity you like.”

The big-armed son of former big league pitcher Pat Mahomes, the younger Mahomes will try to buck a trend of spread-style quarterbacks from Texas Tech that have failed to thrive in the NFL. Among them is Kliff Kingsbury, who spent the past four seasons tutoring Mahomes with the Red Raiders.

The Chiefs were in the market for a quarterback with Smith nearing the end of his career.

The former No. 1 overall pick of the 49ers, Smith arrived in Kansas City with Reid and general manager John Dorsey four years ago. And he’s played well enough to lead the Chiefs to three playoff appearances, an AFC West title this past season and earn a $68 million, four-year contract extension that could keep him with the Chiefs through the 2018 season.

That timetable is important: It gives Mahomes at least one season and possibly two to learn Reid’s offense from a trusted veteran. And if Mahomes proves to be a quick study, Smith can be released after next season with a relatively minimal impact on the salary cap.

“We just thought with what we do, Mahomes would fit in well,” Reid said. “We had all the guys in — all the quarterbacks came in. We had an opportunity to spend six hours with each guy. It was a great experience to meet all those guys. But we thought with what we do, Patrick would fit best.”

Much like other Texas Tech quarterbacks, Mahomes posted up eye-popping numbers in a pass-heavy offense geared to putting up points. He started 29 games over three seasons and became only the third player in Football Bowl Subdivision history with multiple seasons of 5,000 yards total offense.

He threw for 5,052 yards with 41 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season.

HHS softball splits at Sacred Heart triangular

SALINA, Kan. – The Hays High girls softball team split their two games at the Sacred Heart triangular in Salina Thursday, losing to the host Knights 11-7 then beating TMP-Marian 3-2 to end a five-game skid.

The Indians scored six runs in the second inning but couldn’t hold on in the first game against Sacred Heart. Macee Altman allowed all 11 runs on 11 hits. Only five of the runs were earned due to five Hays errors. Cameron Jensen had two hits and Cassidy Prough drove in two.

Hays scored three in the first and made stand up against the Monarchs. Cameron Jensen drove in two of the runs with a double. Jaysa Wichers allowed both runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks in the complete game victory.

The Indians are now 5-9 on the season.

Humphrey strikes twice as Hays High tops TMP

Hays High 3, TMP 2

HAYS, Kan.-Hays High Freshman Sophie Humphrey scored two second half goals to help lift the Hays High Lady Indians to a 3-2 victory over TMP on Thursday afternoon in Hays at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.  It was a back and forth battle from the beginning with TMP striking first on a goal from Kayla Vitztum that gave the Lady Monarchs a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute.  It would take 30 minutes for the next score when Hays High’s Kallie Leiker scored in the 36th minute to tie the game at one goal apiece.

The score remained that way until Vitztum struck again nine minutes in to the second half to give TMP their last lead of the match.  Two minutes later Humphrey scored her first goal to tie the game at 2-2.  The two teams battled through the rest of the second half when Humphrey found a crack in the Lady Monarch’ defense on the right side and found the back of the net to give Hays High the 3-2 lead and the victory.

TMP drops to 5-3-1 with the loss.  Hays High improves to 8-4 with the win.

FHSU’s Bollig and Gray named to All-MIAA softball team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State’s Candace Bollig and Tess Gray were named to the All-MIAA Softball Team for the 2017 season on Thursday (Apr. 27). Both received honorable mention nods as teams are voted on by head coaches in the MIAA.

After a slow start to the year at the plate, Bollig came on strong in the final month of the season seeing her batting average jump 44 points after March 31 as she hit .362 in April. She finished the year with a .304 batting average, .441 slugging percentage, .395 on-base percentage, and 28 RBI to lead the team. She had 14 extra-base hits (8 doubles, 4 triples, 2 home runs). Bollig is an honorable mention selection at third base, where she played 45 of the 56 games this season. She was the designated player for the other 11 contests.

Gray earns the honorable mention selection at catcher. She batted .295 for the season with 5 doubles, 4 home runs, and 27 RBI. Gray led the MIAA in runners caught stealing in conference play with eight, as opponents had a 78 percent success rate against her. TOPEKA, Kan. – The Executive Board of the Kansas State High School Activities Association announced today, that Bill Faflick, of Wichita, Kansas, has been selected as Executive Director-Elect of the KSHSAA effective July 1, 2017. On July 1, 2018, Faflick will become the seventh Executive Director of the KSHSAA succeeding current Executive Director, Gary Musselman of Silver Lake.

Faflick, age 55, was selected in a national search to lead the organization and its 762 member schools effective July 1, 2018. Gary Musselman, the current Executive Director, previously announced his retirement effective on that date.

Faflick joins the KSHSAA after serving the last six years as Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools in USD #259 Wichita, Kansas. From 1999 – 2011, Faflick served as USD #259 Director of Athletics and Athletic Director of Wichita Southeast High School from 1995-1999. Faflick taught mathematics and coached track and field and cross country at Southeast High School from 1985-1999.

“What a blessing it has been to serve as a teacher, coach, and administrator in the Wichita Public Schools for the past 32 years, building relationships with the great students and staff in our community. I am humbled and honored with this opportunity to serve as the next Executive Director and excited to lead the KSHSAA team as we continue this important work across our great state of Kansas,” Faflick commented. “Following in the footsteps of Mr. Musselman will certainly be a challenge as his legacy of service and pursuit of excellence for Kansas students and member schools has set a high standard of excellence and integrity. Yet I believe my professional experiences have prepared me to provide the leadership needed for our Association to maintain and advance the mission of the KSHSAA moving forward.

It is my goal to provide the vision and energy necessary for the KSHSAA staff to engage, collaborate, and lead the charge for healthy interscholastic activities programs in Kansas schools. With a foundation of leadership and personal investment, I stand committed to lead with integrity and the passion necessary for the ultimate goal of student success. I look forward to working with the talented staff of the Association and member schools as we serve together with courage, confidence, and compassion.”

Faflick graduated from Kansas University with a B.S. in Secondary Education, Mathematics and completed a Master’s Degree from Wichita State University in Secondary School Counseling and School Psychology.  Faflick and his wife Diann, an educator in USD #259, are parents of four children (Hope, Jacob, Nathaniel, and Abigail).  Mr. Faflick and his family have been extensively involved in their schools, community and church while residing in Wichita.
