Tiger baseball clipped by Lopers

KEARNEY, Neb. – The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped a mid-week MIAA contest to Nebraska-Kearney Tuesday evening, 6-4. The Tigers dip to 9-26 this season and 2-20 in the conference while the Lopers improve to 12-23 on the year and 5-17 in league play.

Game Highlights

Both sides were gifted chances all evening, with the Tigers giving up six free bases on walks or hit by pitches and UNK making five errors in the field. Though the Tigers outhit UNK 8-6, FHSU was unable to capitalize on enough opportunities, leaving nine runners on base.

The Tigers grabbed an early lead after Jake Lanferman beat out an infield single in the top of the first. Trevor Hughes drove him in with a two-out double to center later in the inning.

The Lopers responded in the second, tying the score at one before grabbing a 4-1 lead with a trio of runs in the third. FHSU answered right back, plating two runs in the fourth to close within one. Cody Starkel led off with a single before moving to third on a base knock from Cody Basgall. Dayton Pomeroy followed with an RBI groundout, plating Starkel. Basgall then came in to score when Bryce Witchurch reached on a throwing error, closing the gap to 4-3.

Fort Hays State then knotted things up at four with another run in the top of the fifth. Lanferman reached on another infield single before swiping second base, his 12th steal of the year. Hughes came through with another two-out base hit, singling to left field to drive in Lanferman.

UNK bounced back with runs in the sixth and the seventh, holding the Tigers scoreless over the final four innings to win 6-4.

Austin Weiser (0-1) took the loss after giving up one run in his longest outing of the season, scattering two hits and one walk across four innings of work. Making his first start as a Tiger, Zac Rothert worked into the third inning, giving up four runs on three hits and three walks in two-plus innings on the bump. Easton Palmer finished things off for the Tigers, tossing the final two innings and giving up one run on one hit.

Lanferman finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored, his fourth multi-hit game over the last five contests. Ty Redington extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the third inning. Trevor Hughes went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

The Tigers will now travel to St. Joseph, Mo. to face off with Missouri Western in a three-game series beginning Thursday.

FHSU softball suffers sweep against UCO

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State softball dropped a pair of games to MIAA-leading Central Oklahoma on Tuesday (April 11). The Tigers played six strong innings in game one only to give up five runs in the seventh inning, falling 7-2. That outburst propelled the powerful Broncho offense to a 14-0 victory in game two. The Tigers now sit at 11-35 on the year and 4-16 in the MIAA, while the Bronchos improve to 36-8 overall and 16-4 in the conference.

Game 1: Central Oklahoma 7, Fort Hays State 2
Tiger starter Hailey Chapman got things going with two solid frames in the circle, striking out the side in order in the first before following that up with another one-two-three inning in the second.

The Tigers struck for the first run of the game in the home half of the second thanks to a solo shot off the bat of Tess Gray. Not only did the homer put the Tigers out in front 1-0, it tied the freshman catcher with teammates Candace Bollig and Veronica Knittig for the team lead with 22 RBI on the year.

The lead did not last long, however, as the Bronchos tied things up at one on a Tiger error in the third inning.

FHSU regained the lead in the fifth when they used some small ball to manufacture a run. Bailey Boxberger led off the inning with a four-pitch walk before Claudia Vazquez came in to pinch-run at first. Kylie Strand followed with a perfect bunt out in front of the plate, beating out what was going to be a sacrifice bunt. Jeni Mohr then advanced the runners to second and third with a successful sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. The Tigers then chose to lay down a bunt in the third-consecutive at bat, with leadoff hitter Bailey Kennedy placing the ball to the right of the pitcher. The throw came home but had no chance to beat Vazquez, completing a perfectly executed suicide squeeze.

The Bronchos once again evened the score in the following half inning, tying the game at two. With the bases loaded, a sharp single off the bat of Ashleigh Tramel plated a run. The third base coach attempted to send another runner home on the base knock, but Kennedy charged hard on contact and threw a strike to the plate, nailing the go-ahead runner.

The upset from the Tigers would not come to pass, however, as the best offense in the country woke up for five runs in the seventh inning. Fort Hays State would go down in order in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Bronchos a 7-2 victory.

Chapman (6-19) pitched all seven innings for the Tigers and looked outstanding over the first six frames. She ended the day giving up six earned runs on nine hits, five walks and nine strikeouts.

Game 2: Central Oklahoma 14, Fort Hays State 0 (5 innings)
Central Oklahoma opened the nightcap right where they left off in game one, plating seven runs in the first inning. Tiger starter Carrie Clark struggled in the circle out of the gate, failing to record an out after facing five batters. Chapman entered the game in relief and allowed two more runs in the frame, one of which was unearned. The Bronchos then scored seven more runs over the next three frames before being shutout in the fifth.

The Tigers could not get anything going offensively, scattering six hits over five innings. Kennedy led the way with two knocks, including a double, while Knittig, Gray, Strand and Mohr all recorded singles.

Clarke (5-12) took the loss in the circle for the Tigers. After reentering the game with two outs in the fourth, she ended with a stat line of 1.1 innings pitched, giving up five runs (four earned), with one walk and one strikeout. Chapman tossed two innings more innings in game two, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits, also recording one walk and one strikeout. Lexi Kimminau also made a relief appearance, tossing 1.2 innings and surrendering six runs (three earned).

The Tigers will continue their home stand this Friday when they square off with Missouri Western for a pair of games beginning at 2 p.m.

Fans bask in the sun at FHSU scrimmage

Spring Kickoff 2017 for the FHSU Tiger football team was held April 8.

This time, there was no rain.

At last year’s spring scrimmage for the Fort Hays State University football team, a torrential downpour forced everybody inside at the Schmidt-Bickle Training Facility adjacent to Lewis Field Stadium.

A Leadership 310 class project, which planned activities for the inaugural Spring Kickoff 2016, had to shift to Plan B mode last year due to the rain; nonetheless, about six times as many fans as had attended recent scrimmages showed up. The goal was to promote FHSU’s ties to the community as well as recruit members for Tigers4Ever, a student alumni organization on campus which was looking to start up again after being dormant in recent years.

At last weekend’s Spring Kickoff 2017 for the Tiger football team, there was nary a rain drop, and more than 300 Tiger fans watched the players run through a controlled scrimmage at Lewis Field on a warm and sunny spring day.

FHSU cheerleaders and the Tiger Debs were in attendance, as was Victor E. Tiger, Fort Hays State’s mascot. Public address announcer Ken Windholz was on hand to announce the action. The Block & Bridle Club and Sigma Alpha, the agriculture sorority, sold Sloppy Joes and baked beans for a fundraiser.

Perhaps the highlight of the day was a fan interaction segment which was held after the scrimmage and before the players signed autographs. Fans signed up to go on the field against the Tigers. They tried to kick extra points, field a punt, catch a TD pass and both run and throw for scores. Participants included FHSU students and even the littlest of fans.

One young girl took a handoff and ran around left end toward the end zone, only to be greeted by several scary-looking Tigers. She put on the brakes, shoved it in reverse and hightailed it 90 yards to the other end zone. Tiger players gave “chase” and failed to tackle her as she dashed into the end zone — much to the delight of the fans.

“That was funny to watch,” said Tiesha Scipio, a Fort Hays State senior from Manhattan. “I think the little girl was everybody’s favorite.”

“At the end of the game, it was pretty cool to have everyone out there,” on the field, Tiger senior defensive lineman Nathan Shepherd said. “I hope they keep that up. It would be a cool tradition to start.”

Scipio, who had attended past scrimmages where a fan could hear the crickets, liked the fun atmosphere.

“I was surprised to see how many people came out because I have been to the past ones,” she said. “It was just usually close, immediate family. It was just a scrimmage; it wasn’t anything special. This year, it was way different. I think it was a lot better this year.”

Kirsten Theis, Wright junior, is one of 16 members of Tigers4Ever. She was happy to see the sunny skies.

“It helps that it’s not raining this year so that we can get a better perspective of turnout,” she said.

Janette Meis, chapter and alumni development program coordinator for the FHSU Alumni Association, is the sponsor for Tigers4Ever. The purpose for promoting the scrimmage is two-fold, she said.

“Tigers4Ever is about bringing students and alumni together,” Meis said. “I see this event as a catalyst for that.

“We hope to use this as a recruitment opportunity also, to get more people involved in our organization, make them more aware of what we do.”

FHSU football coach Chris Brown is aware of Tigers4Ever’s efforts to promote the spring scrimmage, and is appreciative.

“We’re glad with their involvement, getting more people to come and interact with our guys,” Brown said. “It’s just the support for our players. We all work together. We’re all family. We all do this for each other.”

Keller started the second half scoring in the 48th minute to push the Hays High lead to 3-0.  Sophomore Hannah McGuire capped the Lady Indian scoring with just over 26 minutes remaining, giving Hays High the 4-0 win.  The defense was solid once again for Hays High as Junction City failed to get a solid shot on goal the whole match.

Cotton dazzles as A’s spoil Royals’ home opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Khris Davis hit a two-run homer, Jharel Cotton shut down Kansas City’s anemic offense and the Oakland Athletics held on to spoil the Royals’ home opener with a 2-0 victory Monday.

Cotton (1-1) gave up a single in the first and another in the sixth, but otherwise befuddled a Royals lineup that hasn’t shown much punch. He walked three and struck out six over seven innings.

Santiago Casilla struck out the side in the eighth before Sean Doolittle ran into trouble in the ninth, putting runners on the corners with two outs. He bounced back to strike out Brandon Moss for his first save, helping the A’s beat the Royals for the seventh consecutive time.

Davis provided all the offense Oakland needed when he followed a leadoff single by Ryon Healy with his fourth homer of the year. The shot to right on a 3-0 pitch from Ian Kennedy (0-2) barely scraped the wall, but it gave Cotton the only help he needed a sun-splashed afternoon.

Allotey Named MIAA Co-Track Athlete of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State track and field student-athlete Dillando Allotey has been named the MIAA co-Track Athlete of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

The senior earned the honor after posting a pair of NCAA Division II provisional marks last weekend (April 8) at the Friends Invitational in Wichita, Kan. The sprinter ran the 100m dash in 10.42 before winning the 200m dash in 21.14. His time in the 200m dash is the fastest in the conference to date. Allotey now sits in seventh in the country in the 100m and eighth in the 200m rankings.

Allotey and the rest of the Tigers will be back in action this Saturday (April 15) when they travel to the UNK Loper Invitational in Kearney, Neb.

Lawson brothers Dedric, KJ leaving Memphis for Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – High-scoring swingman Dedric Lawson and his brother K.J. Lawson announced Monday they are heading to Kansas, giving coach Bill Self a pair of high-profile transfers beginning with the 2018-19 season.

The former Memphis standouts will sit out next season under NCAA transfer rules.

Dedric Lawson was one of the nation’s top transfers available after averaging 19.2 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists as a sophomore this past season. The former McDonald’s All-American will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Jayhawks.

K.J. Lawson only played in 10 games as a freshman because of an Achilles injury, and averaged 12.3 points and 8.1 rebounds last season. He’ll have three seasons with the Jayhawks if the NCAA grants him a sixth year because of the injury.
