Fourth quarter rally not enough for Indians in loss to Great Bend

HAYS – It took Great Bend 47 minutes to score their only touchdown a week ago in their wild overtime win over Andover. The Panthers needed only one play Friday night against Hays High. Quarterback Dalton Miller broke free for a 70-yard touchdown run on their first offensive play of the game and Great Bend would cruise to a 46-30 win over the Indians at Lewis Field.

Miller ran for two touchdowns, passed for two and had a 21-yard fumble return for a score as Great Bend (2-0, 1-0 WAC) built a 32-0 halftime lead and led 39-0 midway through the third quarter.

The Indians (0-2, 0-1 WAC) got on the board with 5:11 to play in the third on a 3-yard Hayden Brown touchdown run. It came after runs of 14 and 22 yards by the senior who picked up 76 of his team-high 79 rushing yards after halftime.

Sophomore quarterback Dylan Dreiling hit Carson Kiefer on an 8-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth. Following a Brown 7-yard touchdown run, Dreiling connected with Jordan Dale on a 30-yard scoring strike with under a minute to play in the game.

Dreiling hit Jaren Kanak on a 46-yard pass to set up the final score and finished 12 for 24 for 166 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He added 41 rushing yards.

Miller led the Panthers with 148 yards on the ground while completing 7-of-9 passes for 61 yards and two scores.

Area Game of the Week: Central Plains vs. Victoria

The lights shone bright in beautiful Victoria, Kansas as two storied programs faced-off in Victoria and Central Plains. The Victoria Knights have one 7 state titles, mostly recently in 2014 (in DII) and 2015. The Central Plains Oilers won titles in 2014 and last year in 2018. The two teams have split the last 8 meetings 4 to 4 and 3 of the last 5 years the winner of this game has won state. The stage was set for a classic battle.

Victoria received the ball first and put together a methodical drive that ended with a 27 yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Grant Schoenrock. That put Victoria up 8-0. Central Plains was able to put together several impressive drives, but they could never find pay dirt. A long drive ended when senior quarterback Jerred Bieberle threw an interception in the end zone. It was 8-0 at the end of the 1st quarter.

The Knights really opened up in the second quarter getting long touchdown runs from Schoenrock and fullback  Jayvon Pruitt. The Oilers were able to pick-up a lone touchdown on a kick return by Cole Lamatsch.  By halftime, Victoria led 30-8.

The second half was more of the same as the Victoria defense consistently held the line against the Central Plains rushing attack. Schoenrock and Pruitt continued to dominate on the ground, each making several more trips to the endzone. The final score showed Victoria winning in dominating fashion 50-14.

Schoenrock rushed for 225 yards and 4 touchdowns on just 13 attempts. Pruitt chipped in another 122 yards to go with a couple of scores. Victoria as a team ran for 425 yards. Jerred Bieberle was able to throw for 110 yards and a touchdown, but struggled with efficiency going 4/13. Bieberle also added 15 tackles from his linebacker position. Central Plains was only able to gain 103 yards on the ground.

Central Plains lost back to back games for the first time since 2012, but will have a chance to get in the win column next week when they visit Kinsley. The Knights of Victoria will put their perfect record on the line when they travel to Macksville next week

Tiger volleyball splits to open Tiger Classic

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State volleyball team opened the 2019 Tiger Classic with one win and one loss Friday inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers were unable to solve Chadron State, falling in three sets, before taking down Southern Arkansas in a three-set sweep in the nightcap. FHSU moves to 2-4 on the year with the split, while the Eagles improves to 4-1 and the Muleriders dip to 1-4 overall.

The action continues with six more matches beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday. The Tigers will take to the court at 1 p.m. against Western Colorado before wrapping up their non-conference schedule with Northwestern Oklahoma State at 7:30 p.m. A full schedule for day 2 of the 2019 Tiger Classic can be found here.

Fort Hays State 3, Southern Arkansas 0 (25-10, 25-17, 26-24)
The Tigers came out of the gates on fire in the second match of the day, posting a .391 attack percentage to win the opening set in convincing fashion. FHSU was equally as efficient on defense, blocking four shots and holding the Muleriders to a -.120 swing rate in the opening frame.

After leading the first set wire-to-wire, the Tigers once again never trailed in the second frame. Fort Hays State took advantage of 10 SAU attack errors, building a lead and never letting go.

The Black and Gold seemed poised to run away with the third set after capturing the first six points. But the Muleriders slowly chipped into the lead, ultimately earning a chance at set point with a 24-23 lead. Tatum Bartels leveled the score with a booming kill out of a timeout before another SAU miscue gave the Tigers a serve for the match. Delaney Humm finished things off with one final kill and secured the first home win of the season.

Humm led the team with 13 kills, posting an impressive .476 swing percentage. Katie Darnell tossed up a team-high 18 assists while Haley McCorkle added 12. Kayla Vitztum dropped in three service aces in addition to four kills and two blocks.

The Tigers finished the match with a season-best .277 attack percentage to go along with six blocks and three service aces. FHSU held the Muleriders to a -.012 swing rate on the day.

Chadron State 3, Fort Hays State 0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-23)
The Tigers had kept pace with the Eagle offense all afternoon, recording 38 kills to Chadron’s 40. But the discrepancy in errors made a big impact, with FHSU recording 23 attack errors and Chadron State putting up just 12 miscues. The Eagle front line was a big cause of the headache, recording nine team blocks.

The Tigers recorded a .140 attack percentage in the loss, while Chadron countered with a .264 attack percentage. Delaney Humm led the team with 11 kills, Tatum Bartels added six and Kayla Vitztum totaled six.

Cole wins 17th, Springer’s HR lifts Astros over Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — George Springer hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the ninth inning, Gerrit Cole win his 13th straight decision and the Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 Friday night to stop a three-game losing streak.

Kyle Tucker singled with one out in the ninth of Heath Fillmyer (0-2) and pinch-hitter Michael Brantley walked. Josh Reddick struck out and Springer followed with his 35th homer.

Cole (17-5) struck out 11 in eight innings, reaching double figures for the sixth straight start, and allowed an unearned run and four hits. He is 13-0 in 19 starts since losing to the Chicago White Sox on May 22, the longest streak of consecutive winning decisions in one season Stephen Strasburg for Washington in 2013.

Roberto Osuna worked around a two-out single for his 33rd save in 39 chances.

Jose Altuve hit his 28th home run in the first inning, breaking the Astros record for home runs by a second baseman, set by Jeff Kent in 2004. It was Altuve’s 10th hit in 23 career at-bats (.435) against Danny Duffy but his first homer.

Duffy allowed one run and four hits in six innings, throwing 54 of his 108 pitches in the first two inning.

Meibrys Viloria hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth after Bubba Starling singled, stole second and took third on catcher Martin Maldonado’s throwing error.

Royals left fielder Alex Gordon leaped near the wall to grab Kyle’s Tucker’s drive in the second inning, then made a diving catch of Tucker’s liner to the gap in the seventh.

Royals manager Ned Yost and Gordon, who was just called out on strikes, were ejected by plate umpire Lance Barrett after the seventh inning.

UP NEXT

Astros RHP Zack Greinke (15-5, 2.99 ERA) returns to his old home Saturday, matched with Royals LHP Mike Montgomery (3-8, 4.77 ERA). Since leaving the Royals after the 2010 season, Greinke started at Kauffman four times for four other teams. He had no decisions in 2012 with the Brewers and then the Angels, and losses in 2014 with the Dodgers and 2017 with the Diamondbacks. Greinke was 36-28 at Kauffman during seven seasons with Kansas City. Greinke is 5-1 with a 3.22 ERA in seven starts for the Astros after being obtained from the D-backs.

FHSU women’s soccer grings out win over CSU-Pueblo

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State notched its second straight 1-0 shutout of an opponent, winning its home opener over CSU-Pueblo. The Tigers moved to 2-1 overall on the season.

The first half saw persistent offense from both sides. Only three shots were on goal for the half (all by Fort Hays State) and there were 14 total shots taken. Scoring chances were plentiful, and it seemed either side was poised for a breakthrough at some point in the second half.

That breakthrough came in the 76th minute for the Tigers. Sophomore forward Jordan Thompson found herself with just the goalie between her and the net. She dribbled in from the left side of the penalty box, put a nice move on goalkeeper Rylie Martin, and hit the wide-open shot for her first goal of the season. The ThunderWolves put a couple of shots on target in the final six minutes, but the Tigers held on for the victory with a pair of saves from Megan Kneefel.

Head Coach Blake Reynolds was proud of his team’s performance tonight. “CSU-Pueblo is a great team and it was a back-and-forth game for both teams. I told the girls at halftime that it feels like a one goal game. Whoever gets that one goal would be the one to win this game. It took one special moment and Jordan Thompson made a fantastic individual effort. We grinded out another 1-0 win just like last week in Sioux Falls. This was a good win for us.”

Kneefel (1-1) picked up the win in a shutout performance. CSU-Pueblo’s Rylie Martin (1-2) took the loss.

The Tigers get a week off and are back on the road for a matchup with Emporia State (Sept. 20). The match is set for 3:00 p.m.

Dozier’s homer sends Royals past Giolito, White Sox

CHICAGO (AP) – Hunter Dozier hit a tie-breaking, three-run home run in the sixth, Jorge Soler had his third homer in two days and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3 on Thursday.

Whit Merrifield walked and Soler singled off Chicago starter Lucas Giolito in the decisive inning for Kansas City, which won for the eighth time in the last 11 games. Then Dozier drove a 1-2 pitch into the left-field bleachers for a 5-2 lead. He doubled two innings later.

The homers spoiled a record performance by Giolito (14-9), who set a team mark with eight consecutive strikeouts in the third through fifth innings before Nicky Lopez grounded out to end the run. The streak was the seventh-longest in major league history. Joe Cowley and Carlos Rodon shared the previous White Sox record of record.

Giolito finished with 12 strikeouts in six innings. He allowed five runs on five hits and one walk as Chicago lost its fourth game in the last six.

Jorge Lopez (4-7) allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings for the Royals. He struck out two. The performance followed his no-run, six-inning effort in a 3-0 victory against the Miami six days days earlier.

Five Royals relievers combined for 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Ian Kennedy wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth for his 29th save in 33 chances.

Soler opened the scoring in the first with his 43rd homer. The solo drive pulled him within one of the Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout for the American League lead.

The Royals extended their lead to 2-0 in the second, which Ryan McBroom opened with a single. He advanced to third on Melbrys Viloria’s double and scored on Erick Mejia’s sacrifice fly, his first RBI in the majors.

The White Sox scored on Jose Abreu’s sacrifice fly in the fifth and Yolmer Sanchez sacrifice fly one inning later.

In the ninth, Kansas City’s Bubba Starling walked, moved to third on reliever Alex Colome’s errant throw on a sacrifice bunt and scored on James McCann’s passed ball for the final run.

Chicago’s Daniel Palka snapped a 0-for-23 streak with a ground single to short right field in the sixth. His first hit since April 17 against Kansas City was met with applause from several teammates in the dugout. He has two hits and 23 strikeouts in 57 at-bats this season.

Tigers fall at home to Missouri Western

HAYS – Fort Hays State saw their 12-game regular season win streak snapped in a 28-17 loss to Missouri Western State Thursday night at Lewis Field. It’s the first regular season loss at home since the 2016 season, when they fell 28-7 to a then No. 1 ranked Northwest Missouri State. It’s also the first 0-2 start for the Tigers since 2013.

Fort Hays State drove to the Griffons (1-1) two-yard line on their first possession but had to settle for a Dante Brown field goal following a false start. Brown missed on a 49-yard field goal attempt early in the second quarter and the Griffons would take advantage, scoring 21 unanswered points in the second quarter.

Wyatt Steigerwald connected with on a 37-yard touchdown pass to Damen Wheeler, Jr. at the 12:36 mark, giving Missouri Western the lead 7-3.

Following a muffed punt by the Tigers which gave MWSU a short field at the FHSU 20-yard line, the Griffons scored on the next play, a 20-yard pass from Steigerwald to Kyle Berry to push their lead to 14-3 with 8:29 to go in the second quarter.

Missouri Western marched 62 yards in seven plays for yet another touchdown, a 12-yard run by Shamar Griffith at the 4:07 mark and led 21-3 at halftime.

The Tigers could not advance the ball past midfield on their first two drives of the second half. They advanced to the Griffons 24-yard line on their third possession but DJ Stirgus intercepted a Fuller pass at the goal line.

Fuller found Manny Ramsey on a 28-yard scoring strike with 8:24 to go in the game, however, the two-point conversion failed and the Griffons led 21-9.

A bad snap on a punt with 5:33 remaining in the game gave Missouri Western the ball at the Tiger 26. Markel Smith would score on a 6-yard touchdown run four plays later to push the score to 28-9.

The Tigers picked up one more touchdown late on a four-yard touchdown pass from Fuller to Hunter Budke, but it was too-little, too-late.

Fuller threw for 333 yards for a second straight week, completing 23-of-49 attempts. Ramsey and Harley Hazlett each had five receptions, Ramsey finishing with 102 yards and Hazlett with 90. Charles Tigner led the ground game with 44 yards but the Tigers were held to 14 as a team.

Hayden Kreutzer, making the first start of his career, led the Tigers with nine tackles.

Steigerwald completed 17-of-29 passes for 197 yards for the Griffons. Smith ran for a team-high 84 yards and Devon Holmes had seven catches for 70 yards.
