Kansas, meet your new baseball team: The Wind Surge

If Wichita’s new baseball team can draw fans to the stadium like it did Wednesday night for the unveiling of its name and logo, it will be in good shape.

Before a packed house at Wave, the new team was officially christened the Wichita Wind Surge.

Team officials say the name is a play on the city’s ever-present wind and because Wichita is taking “an exponential surge forward,” according to an introductory video with soaring music and quintessential images of Kansas and Wichita.

The logo features the winged horse Pegasus soaring through a red W. The team’s primary colors include navy blue and red, a nod to the colors in the Wichita flag, which will appear on the uniforms.

“I think we got it right,” said Todd Radom, a nationally recognized graphic designer who created the Wichita logo. “I hope the reaction is good. Building a foundation is so important.”

Although the name was panned by many on social media after the announcement, those in attendance cheered loudly. And they formed long lines afterward to buy Wind Surge merchandise.

“Today does feel like Christmas,” said team president Jay Miller, who has been working to market a team with no name since earlier this year.

It also felt like Opening Day at the ballpark.

There were hot dogs, peanuts and beer. Elected officials roamed the crowd, along with members of the Wind Surge’s staff.

Players in the Miami Marlins’ organization — the parent club for Wichita — modeled the new uniforms.

Miss Kansas and Miss Wichita obligingly posed for photos. A barbershop quartet sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”

“Make no mistake folks, Wichita is a baseball town,” said Wind Surge senior vice president Cookie Rojas.

Team owner and managing partner Lou Schwechheimer thanked Mayor Jeff Longwell for his efforts to bring the team to Wichita.

“The mayor called me three years ago and said, ‘This city deserves affiliated baseball, and we need to bring it back,’” Schwechheimer said.

Longwell was criticized for a lack of transparency in the city’s dealings with the team and the rapid decision to knock down Lawrence-Dumont Stadium and build a new $75 million baseball stadium on the west side of the Arkansas River.

The Wind Surge will take the field in April for its inaugural season in the Pacific Coast League. Wichita will be the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, the highest level of minor league baseball. The city has not had a Triple-A team since 1984, when the Wichita Aeros left for Buffalo, New York.

When city leaders announced in September of 2018 that the New Orleans Baby Cakes were moving to Wichita, they said the team would get a new name. The team solicited suggestions from the public and received thousands of submissions, but it said team officials would make the final decision.

The team began releasing a series of names and logos in August, even though it said none would be the team’s new name. Those included the River Riders, Linemen and Doo-Dahs.

But Radom told Sportslogos.net that team officials wanted a more major-league feel.

“Wichita is the biggest city in the state of Kansas; it’s kind of a regional powerhouse,” Radom said. “So they wanted a look with a little bit more of a classic feel. We were going to look for something that would represent the team for the long term.”

Sneed scores 15, K-State rallies past Monmouth

MANHATTAN, Kansas (AP) – Xavier Sneed had 15 points and six rebounds and led Kansas State to a 73-54 win over Monmouth Wednesday night.

Monmouth held a nine-point halftime lead but was stifled offensively in the second half – only scoring six points in the first 15 minutes.

Ray Salnave had 20 points and five rebounds while Mustapha Traore scored five points and had 10 rebounds in the losing effort.

Kansas State’s defense forced 25 turnovers scoring 21 points off those mistakes.

The Wildcats (3-0) won the game in the paint outscoring the Hawks 38-20 as Makol Mawien nearly had his second double-double of the season scoring 11 points and pulling in nine rebounds. Freshman Montavious Murphy had a career high eight points.

Monmouth (1-2) closed the first half on a 14-4 run after a layup at buzzer by Traore to lead 29-20 at the break. The Wildcats have been outscored 74-57 in the first half of games this season.

Sneed opened the second half with a 3, starting a 9-0 run for the Wildcats, which tied the game. K-State scored 23 of the first 27 points in the second half and cruised to victory from there.

BIG PICTURE
Monmouth showed for a half that they can play with a Power Five school but will need to play a full 40 minutes to complete a major upset.

Kansas State has to start games quicker because against better quality opponents, they won’t be able to come back as easily.

Ethan Doud, No. 1 player from Wichita, is first class of 2020 signee for FHSU men’s soccer

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State men’s soccer head coach Gerry Cleary announced this morning the signing of Class of 2020 freshman, Ethan Doud.

Doud will be making the move from one tiger family to the next as he prepares to continue his soccer journey in black and gold. Currently a senior at Goddard-Eisenhower High School, he was ranked the preseason No. 1 high school player in the Greater Wichita area and will be bringing his highly touted skills to a program riddled with success.

As an All-Metro selection in 2018, the central midfielder posted seven goals and 13 assists through 18 games. Doud led his team to an 18-1-1 record in the 2019 campaign, a top four placement in the Class 5A bracket, and a top 10 ranking in Kansas according to MaxPreps.

“No player in the Wichita area controls the game the same way,” wrote Hayden Barber of the Wichita Eagle. “Last year, Doud pulled the strings for Eisenhower on its way to a share of the AVCTL II title. Although not a high-volume scorer like other in the area, Doud’s vision and soccer IQ set him apart from others in Kansas. Those attributes earned himself spot on the Eagle’s All-Metro team and AVCTL II first team.”

Doud has earned an additional accolade on the AVCTL II First Team for the production during his senior season as well as the AVCTL II Player of the Year honor.

“We are excited that Ethan has chosen to be a Tiger,” Cleary stated. “Our staff has a great relationship with him and his family. He is one of the top players in the state and we know he will be the same for us.”

Doud starred as a three-sport athlete collecting three varsity letters in wrestling spending time on the diamond as a member of the baseball team. He has also spent time playing at the club level for FC Wichita’s U20 Academy team.

No bowl game for FHSU football in 2019

Regardless of the outcome, Saturday’s game at Northeastern State will be the final of the season for the Fort Hays State football team. Coach Chris Brown announced Tuesday during his weekly press conference that his team will not be going to any bowl game even if the Tigers are invited.

“Our goal this year and our expectations this year was to win the conference and get to the playoffs and win in the playoffs. A bowl was not going to be an option for us,” Brown said. “That we would not take a bowl game or play in a bowl game because that’s not who we are not right now.”

“Our expectations are playoffs and winning conference championships and we said that from the get-go that we would not play in a bowl game.” Brown said. “I told our team yesterday (Monday) that this is going to be our last game.”

FHSU fell out of the NCAA II Super Region Three rankings after their double-overtime loss to Northwest Missouri State Saturday, ending their hopes of a third straight playoff appearance.

Brown has guided to the Tigers to the postseason each of the last four seasons. In 2015 the Tigers lost to Minnesota Duluth in the Mineral Water Bowl, their first postseason appearance since 1995. The following season they beat Eastern New Mexico in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl.

The last two seasons the Tigers have advanced to the NCAA II Playoffs, losing at home to Ferris State in the second round in 2017 and falling in the first round at Indianapolis last season.

Fort Hays State closes out their season Saturday at winless Northestern State. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.

FHSU football continues to receive votes in AFCA Poll

WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State Football continues to receive votes in the latest AFCA Top 25 Poll, released on Monday, as it heads into the final week of the 2019 season. The Tigers dropped from the D2Football.com Top 25 Poll, a list they found themselves in the last two weeks until the tough double overtime loss to Northwest Missouri State at home last week.

The double overtime loss in a battle of nationally ranked teams last week in Hays went the way of Northwest Missouri, but was enough to keep the Tigers among the teams receiving votes. Central Missouri remains undefeated at 10-0 going into the final week of the season and holds the No. 9 ranking in the AFCA Poll, while Northwest Missouri remained No. 12 in the AFCA Poll. In the latest D2Football.com Poll released on Tuesday (Nov. 12), UCM is one notch lower in the rankings at No. 10, while NWMSU is No. 12 in that poll as well. FHSU and Missouri Western are receiving votes in the AFCA Poll, both tied for third in the MIAA with 7-3 records.

The Tigers dropped out of the D2Football.com media poll. They had been ranked 24th entering Saturday’s game with the Bearcats.

Fort Hays State finishes its 2019 schedule with Northeastern State on Saturday (Nov. 16) in Tahlequah, Oklahoma at 2 pm. Northeastern State remains winless going into the final week of the season. The Tigers are looking for their fifth-straight season of at least eight wins under Chris Brown, while the senior class is looking to be the winningest in program history by win percentage with the potential of posting a 36-11 mark. If they can reach 36 wins on Saturday, it would match the win total produced by the 2018 senior class.

FHSU’s Agudelo and Villalba earn GAC men’s soccer weekly honors

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Fort Hays State seniors Santiago Agudelo and Sergio Villalba earned weekly recognition from the Great American Conference for their performances in the final week of the regular season. Agudelo earned Offensive Player of the Week, while Villalba earned Defender of the Week on Tuesday (Nov. 12).

Agudelo had a big week offensively by scoring five goals and adding an assist. In a 6-1 win over Southern Nazarene, Agudelo recorded the fifth hat trick of his career at FHSU. He provided the first two goals of the match, then recorded his hat trick on Fort Hays State’s fifth goal of the match just over three minutes into the second half. In the 3-2 overtime win at Oklahoma Baptist, he scored the last two goals for FHSU. He put the Tigers up 2-0 in the first half before lifting the team to victory just 1:20 into overtime with the game-winner. He assisted on Fort Hays State’s first goal of the match, so he had a hand in all three goals for the team. Agudelo had both game winners for the Tigers on the week and now has 13 career game winners at FHSU.

Villalba had two goals and two assists in the 6-1 win over Southern Nazarene in Hays. He scored the third and fourth goals of the match in the latter part of the first half, giving FHSU a 4-0 lead by halftime. He also assisted on the second and fifth goals of the match, both to Santiago Agudelo, who completed a hat trick on Villalba’s second assist. Villalba also played all 91:20 in the 3-2 overtime win for FHSU at Oklahoma Baptist.

Agudelo and Villalba join Goalkeeper of the Week Dillon Dean from Rogers State as recipients of the weekly honors from the conference office.

Head coach Gerry Cleary announces new recruits to FHSU men’s soccer

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State men’s soccer head coach Gerry Cleary announced the signing of two newcomers on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Blake Arndt and Taisei Arima will join the Black and Gold in the spring of 2020.

Arndt, a native of Wichita, Kansas, joins the Tigers as a sophomore transfer from the University of Central Arkansas, who played in six matches during the 2018 campaign.

The 6-foot-3 forward reeled in two All-State forward selections, two first team All-City forward selections and one All-Metro nod during his tenure at Wichita Northwest High School. Prior to his senior season, Arndt was named one of the top 10 players to watch in 2017 by The Wichita Eagle.

He boasts a career stat-line of 56 goals and 16 assists through 62 matches played as four-year varsity starter for Wichita Northwest. Arndt also helped lead the Wichita Cyclones to a 2015 USYS National Championship.

“We are excited to give Blake a new home. He has played at Division I for two years. I was able to watch him play a lot with FC Wichita last summer,” Cleary said. “The experience he brings to our squad is unbelievable. He has three years to play as a Tiger and we expect great things from him.”

Taisei Arima will join the FHSU family as a freshman from Machida, Japan, where he played at Seiryo High School and with Yokohama Takeru FC.

During his time with Seiryo High School, Arima logged 335 total minutes in five matches, while recording one goal from the midfield.

For Yokohama Takeru FC, he recorded 391 total minutes in five matches and scored one goal.

Throughout his high school and club career, Arima has helped lead his teams to an overall record of 6-0-4.

“Taisei is coming in as a winger for us. We are excited for him to join us and add to the great culture that we continue to build as a program,” Cleary added.

These two newcomers will join an already solid squad of Tiger veterans, who have reached a national ranking as high as No. 3. FHSU has recently locked up their third consecutive regular season title and is in the mix to make their eighth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
