No. 1 Kansas rallies to beat Oklahoma on Senior Night

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Frank Mason III scored 23 points in his final game at Allen Fieldhouse, Devonte Graham hit a series of crucial 3-pointers in the second half and top-ranked Kansas rallied from a 10-point deficit to beat Oklahoma 73-63 on Monday night.

Graham finished with 16 points and Josh Jackson had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Big 12 champion Jayhawks (27-3, 15-2), who trailed 54-42 before finishing the game on a 31-11 run.

The Sooners (10-19, 4-13) were poised to spring a big upset on the day the Jayhawks ascended to No. 1 for the first time this season. But after they took their biggest lead with just over 10 minutes to go, Mason got the comeback started with a nifty basket inside.

He added a steal moments later to set up Lagerald Vick’s 3-pointer, and Jackson scored before Graham hit back-to-back shots from beyond the arc. And when Mason added another basket moments later, the Jayhawks had put together a 17-2 charge that gave them a 64-58 lead with about 5 minutes left.

Kansas slowly drew away to make senior night memorable for Mason, big man Landen Lucas and reserve guard Tyler Self, whose father – Kansas coach Bill Self – called him “my favorite Jayhawk of all time.”

Game Highlights

The Tigers struggled to get separation from the RiverHawks the entire second half, never leading by more than five until the final two minutes of the game. NSU gained the lead once at the 8:08 mark, but Trey O’Neil answered with a 3-pointer with 4:48 which gave the Tigers the lead back.

Tied 48-48 with 3:35 to play, the Tigers went on a 7-0 run, triggered by a pair of baskets from JaQuan Smith and Hadley Gillum to push the margin to six with 1:37 to play. .

Hadley Gillum led the Tigers with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Rob Davis, who earlier in the day was named to the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year, scored 12 as did Trey O’Neil. JaQuan Smith chipped in with 10.

TMP girls dominate Phillipsburg in opener

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

TMP 70, Phillipsburg 22

HAYS, Kan-The TMP Lady Monarchs showed why they are the number one seed in their 3A Sub-State Tournament on Monday night in Hays.  TMP dominated Phillipsburg, winning 70-22.  Phillipsburg took a lead early in the first quarter, 8-6, and the Lady Monarchs turned up the pressure and went on a 15-0 run to take a lead that they would not give up.

TMP led 23-13 after the first quarter and 43-17 at halftime.  The Lady Panthers did not help their own cause with 19 first half turnovers.  Kayla Vitztum paced TMP with 13 first half points and Megan Koenigsman added 10.

The second half started much the same way with TMP in control.  The Lady Monarchs outscored Phillipsburg 19-3 in the third quarter to lead 62-20 after three.  There was still some fourth quarter drama as Madyson Koerner needed four points to reach 1,000 points in her career and she would  score 6 points and now has 1,002 career points.

Koerner led TMP with 22 on the night, Vitztum 17 and Koenigsman finished with 10.  The Lady Monarchs picked up their 18th consecutive win.  They will match up with Beloit in the sub-state semi-finals on Thursday.  The Trojans defeated Norton 40-37.

Davis repeats All-MIAA First Team honors; Gillum and Smith honorable mention picks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men’s Basketball had three players named to the All-MIAA Team on Monday. Senior guard Rob Davis was a repeat first team selection, while junior forward Hadley Gillum and senior forward JaQuan Smith were honorable mention picks. Smith was also named to the MIAA All-Defensive Team.

Davis earns the repeat first-team nod as one of the top scorers in NCAA Division II throughout the season, currently averaging 21.9 points per game. He has reached at least 30 points in eight games this year and at least 20 points in 16 games. He reached double figures in 24 of 27 regular season games and has a total of 590 points this season. Davis produced a career-high 42 points at Emporia State on February 1, tying the sixth-highest scoring performance in school history. He became the 19th player in school history to reach 1,000 points, passing the mark in early February, then passed 2,000 points for his entire collegiate career this past Thursday (Feb. 23).

Gillum earns the first All-MIAA honor of his career with the honorable mention nod. He ranks 15th in the conference in scoring at 13.4 points per game and 11th in rebounding at 6.3 per game. He has scored in double figures 17 times this year and reached 20 or more in a game seven times, including a career-high 27 points at Central Oklahoma. He has five double-doubles in points and rebounds to his credit this year as well.

In his only season with the Tigers, Smith earns both All-MIAA Honorable Mention and MIAA All-Defensive Team honors. Coaches voted Smith as one of five players on the all-defensive team. He ranks sixth in the MIAA in rebounding at 6.6 per game and sixth in blocked shots at 1.2 per game. He ranks third in scoring for FHSU at 7.9 points per game. Smith has three double-doubles in points and rebounds this season, reaching a season-high 17 points against Lincoln and 13 rebounds at Northeastern State. Allotey and Cronin earn MIAA titles; Tigers finish 5th at MIAA Indoor Track Championships

Results

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Fort Hays State men’s track and field team had a strong showing at the MIAA Championships with four All-MIAA performers and two individual champions. Dillando Allotey (200 meters) and Decano Cronin (600 yards) earned individual titles, helping the team finish.

Allotey was crowned the MIAA Champion in the 200-meter dash after he crossed the finish line in a time of 21.70 seconds. Due to the track size, it improved his provisional time to 21.32 seconds after getting converted. He still ranks eighth in the nation on the performance list. He also tallied the most team points for the Tigers individually (14), also picking up a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.48 seconds. It was also a provisional time, but not better than his best mark this year that has him ranked 48th nationally.

Cronin was another Tiger to pick up an MIAA Championship, doing so in the 600-yard run. He earned the title crossing the finish line with a time of 1:12.03, more than a quarter of a second faster than the runner-up.

Brett Meyer earned All-MIAA honors thanks to his second-place finish in the 800-meter run. Meyer crossed the line in a time of 1:56.18, two seconds back of the winner and just .18 seconds in front of the third-place finisher. He still has the third-fastest time in the nation in the event this year. Cronin has the second fastest time and both are automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the event.

Kolt Newell earned his first All-MIAA indoor honor when he claimed second place in the high jump. Newell cleared a height of 6 feet, 8 inches which is a provisional mark, but shy of the 6 feet, 9.5 inches he cleared earlier in the year. He currently ranks 20th on the national performance list.

Allotey, Meyer, Cronin and Isreal Barco combined for a fourth-place finish in the 4×400 medley relay with a time of 3:22.67.

Other individuals generating team points for the Tigers were Layton Werth (7th-5,000 meters, 8th-3,000 meters), Kyle Comstock (8th-60 meter hurdles), Sam Dreiling (6th-pole vault), and Matthew Pieper (8th-heptathlon).

Krzesinski Earns All-MIAA honors; FHSU women place 8th at MIAA Indoor Track Championships

Results

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Fort Hays State women’s track and field team finished eighth at the MIAA Indoor Championships in Joplin, Mo. Micki Krzesinski was the lone All-MIAA performer at the meet for the FHSU women, taking third in the 5,000-meter run.

Krzesinski hit a provisional mark with her time of 17:34.19 in the 5,000 meters, but already owns a faster time this year at 17:20.02. Krzesinski just missed all-conference honors in the 3,000 meters by placing fourth in a time of 10:12.49, just under four seconds behind the third-place finisher. Krzesinski generated 15 team points for FHSU in the two distance events. She currently ranks 30th on the national performance list in the 5,000 meters.

Kelly Wycoff added seven team points thanks to a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash and a sixth place finish in the 200-meter dash. Both performances improved her provisional marks, which were converted due to track size. A 57.25 second finish in the 400 converted down to 56.50 seconds, and a 25.24 second time in the prelims of the 200 meters converted down to 24.86 seconds. She now ranks 41st on the national performance list in the 400 and 52nd in the 200.

Selam Ball placed eighth in the pole vault and upped her provisional mark to 12 feet, 1.25 inches. It was just three-quarters of an inch shy of the school record. The effort moved her to 26th on the national performance list.

HAYS – The Norton Blue Jays are once again the class of the 3-2-1A State Wrestling Championships as they earned their fifth straight state title Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.

Five of Norton’s eight state qualifiers placed at the weekend tournament with three of them earning gold. The Blue Jays and Hoisington each qualified eight wrestlers, two behind Marysville’s 10.

Van Pelt went 1-2 at state and finished his junior year 26-18.

Tigers earn No. 5 seed in MIAA Tournament; host RiverHawks in opening round Monday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men’s Basketball tied for fourth place in the MIAA regular season standings and receives the No. 5 seed for the MIAA Championship Tournament next week. The Tigers will host No. 12 seed Northeastern State in the opening round at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays on Monday at 7 pm.

Bracket

Information on reserving tickets for Monday’s game can be found HERE.

The Tigers finished in a four-way tie for fourth place in the MIAA standings at 11-8. Missouri Southern claimed the fourth and final opening round bye to the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament by going 3-0 against Fort Hays State, Washburn, and Central Oklahoma. In a tie of more than two teams, the team with the highest winning percentage among the teams tied gets the highest seed. Fort Hays State went 4-1 within the tie, Washburn was 2-3, and Central Oklahoma was 0-5. So FHSU gets the No. 5 seed, Washburn gets the No. 6, and Central Oklahoma gets the No. 7 seed.

This will be the first time the FHSU men host an opening round game in the MIAA Tournament. The tournament went to a 12-team format in 2012-13 with the expansion of membership in the conference. The Tigers earned a bye to the quarterfinals in three of the four previous seasons, but two years ago went on the road in the opening round as the No. 9 seed. FHSU has once been the No. 1 seed and twice the No. 4 seed since the tournament expanded to 12 teams, so this will be just the second time in the five-year existence of the format that FHSU plays in the opening round.

The winner of Monday’s opening round game in Hays will move on to meet No. 4 seed Missouri Southern in the quarterfinals on Thursday (Mar. 2) in Kansas City at Municipal Auditorium. That game is slated for 8:15 pm.

Kansas clinches 13th straight Big 12 title outright

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Josh Jackson scored 18 points and Frank Mason III added 16 to help No. 3 Kansas beat Texas 77-67 on Saturday night to secure its 13th consecutive Big 12 regular season championship outright.

Devonte Graham and Dwight Coleby added 12 points apiece for the Jayhawks (26-3, 14-2 Big 12) who have won six straight games.

Jarrett Allen led Texas (10-19, 4-12) with 20 points. Andrew Jones added 18 for the Longhorns, losers of five straight games.

Texas committed 15 turnovers, six by guard Kerwin Roach Jr., and Kansas converted them into 28 points.

Kansas used a 12-0 push in the first half to take a 13-point lead before settling for a 40-31 edge at the break. Coleby, a little-used junior forward who averages 1.2 points a game, scored 10 in the half, converting 4 of 5 shots inside. Kansas had a 24-8 edge in points in the paint. His 12 points matched a career best.

Ball wins 141-pound Super Regional title; four FHSU Tigers qualify for NCAA Wrestling Championships

Courtesy FHSU Athletics

GOLDEN, Colo. – Fort Hays State is sending four wrestlers to the NCAA Division II Championships on Friday and Saturday in Birmingham, Ala. After the conclusion of the NCAA West Super Regional on Saturday.  At the NCAA West Super Regional on Saturday (Feb. 25), Brandon Ball claimed the 141-pound title while Jon Inman (197) finished runner-up for the second consecutive year. Greg Tooley (157) placed third and Christian Lance (285) was fourth.

After going 3-0 on day one and sealing his birth at nationals, 11th-ranked Ball cruised to a 6-2 decision in the finals over Joshua Ailey from Central Oklahoma. With the regional title, Ball becomes the first Tiger since Trey Page (285 pounds) in 2014-15 to claim a super-regional title.

Inman, the No. 3 ranked wrestler at 197 pounds advances to the NCAA National Championships for the fourth year in a row. The second-place finish by Inman ties his career-best at the regional after finishing runner-up last year at 184 pounds. Inman only had to wrestle in the finals on Saturday (Feb. 25) but came out on the short end of a 5-2 decision against Jacob Waste, the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 197 pounds.

Tooley, the No. 3 ranked wrestler at 157 pounds bounced back strong on day two after going 2-1 on Friday to slip to the consolation bracket. He dominated the two matches he wrestled on his way to a third-place finish. Tooley picked up an 18-1 technical fall in the consolation semifinals before punching his ticket to the NCAA Championships with a 15-3 major decision over Kyle Fantin of Colorado State-Pubelo.

Christian Lance started the day in the consolation bracket by dropping a 3-1 decision to Paul Head of California Baptist. Luckily, at the regional tournament wrestlers have a chance to win a “true fourth place” so he had another shot to advance to nationals but needed some luck on his side and two consecutive wins. Fortunately, that is exactly what happened. After winning the fifth-place match with a   2-0 decision, Lance had to have Paul Head of California Baptist win the third place match to force a true fourth-place bout. Head complied knocking off Chadron State’s Cooper Cogdill. Lance would then get the better of Cogdill in the fourth-place match with a 3-1 decision.

Kruger gets 600th win as Oklahoma tops Kansas State

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Khadeem Lattin had 17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks to help Oklahoma roll past Kansas State 81-51 and give coach Lon Kruger his 600th career win.

Kruger became the 33rd coach to win at least 600 Division I games.

Rashard Odomes scored 16 points and Jordan Shepherd added 12 for the Sooners (10-18, 4-12 Big 12), who had lost nine of 10 since their upset win at West Virginia on Jan. 18. Kansas State’s point total and 26.3-percent shooting were season lows for the Wildcats, and for Oklahoma opponents.

Isaiah Maurice scored 11 points for Kansas State (17-12, 6-10), which has lost five of six.

Oklahoma held Kansas State to 24 percent shooting in the first half and took a 33-20 lead. The Sooners, who had fallen apart many times late in games this season, shot 56.7 percent in the second half to put the game away.

BIG PICTURE

Kansas State has been on a tailspin after a solid start, and the Wildcats needed this one to help their fading NCAA Tournament hopes. The loss to the last-place Sooners could put them at risk of missing out on the big dance.

Oklahoma had been playing solid basketball in recent weeks but coming up short on the scoreboard. The Sooners were coming off a four-point loss to Oklahoma State last Saturday and a six-point loss to Baylor on Tuesday. The victory should give the young Sooners confidence as the Big 12 Tournament nears.

UP NEXT

Kansas State plays at TCU on Wednesday.

Oklahoma plays at Kansas on Monday.

Hays High sub-state released

Dustin Armbruster

The Hays High Indians already knew what sub-state they were going to be a part of. In fact, the teams already knew who they would be playing before the brackets were announced on Saturday.

The boys side of the tournament will start first on Thursday. Hays (12-7) will be the three seed in the bracket and play host school and seconded seeded Buhler (13-6) in the first round at 7:30. McPherson (16-4) is the top seed of the four schools and will play Ulysses (10-10) at 6:00.

This is the third consecutive year that these four schools have been in the same sub-state. All three years have featured the same first round match-ups with the Hays beating Buhler in each of the last two seasons.

The Hays High girls will take the floor on Friday at 6:00 to play Ulysses. Hays and Ulysses each ended the year at 11-9. Ulysses will be the number two seeds and be the home team. Hays will play as the three seed. McPherson (17-3) is the top seed and will play Buhler (3-17), who is the four seed.

Winners in each of the first two days of the tournament will move to the championship round on Saturday. The girls championship will be played at 6:00 with the boys to follow.

Games can be heard on 96.9 KFIX and watched at hayspost.com.
