FHSU wrestling jumps to No. 11 in the nation; Tooley vaults into individual rankings

INDIANAPOLIS – Fort Hays State jumped to No. 11 in the latest edition of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Poll, released on Monday (Feb. 20). This is the highest ranking of the year for the Tigers, after sitting at No. 16 in the prior two polls. Tied with FHSU for the 11th spot is Findlay University.

Individually the Tigers have four wrestlers in the current edition of the poll with one newcomer and three that have been there all season long.

At 157 pounds Greg Tooley enters the national rankings for the first time this season and jumps all the way up to the No. 3 slot. Tooley has been a force all season long for the Tigers going 22-3. With consecutive wins over defending national champion and then No. 2 wrestler in the nation Destin McCauley of Nebraska-Kearney two weeks ago, coaches took notice and placed Tooley one spot ahead of McCauley in the latest rankings. Tooley was the lone individual champion for FHSU at the MIAA Tournament.

Brandon Ball has remained a fixture in the rankings at 141. He is No. 11 in the latest poll with a very impressive 31-5 record on the year.

Jon Inman slides one spot to the No. 3 position at 197 pounds. Inman, who had been No. 2 all season, flip-flopped positions with Greg Wilson of Central Oklahoma after dropping his only two matches of the season to Wilson, in a dual and the MIAA Championship Tournament bout. Inman is 22-2 overall.

Christian Lance jumps one spot in the heavyweight division to No. 8. Lance currently leads the Tigers in wins with an impressive 40-6 record on the year.

TMP Boys and Girls earn MCL Titles

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

Girls: TMP 68, Plainville 38
Boys: TMP 57, Plainville 55

HAYS, Kan-With a Mid Continent League regular season title on the line the TMP Lady Monarchs came out ready to play on Tuesday night in Hays.  The Plainville Lady Cardinals came ready to play as well as they played TMP even for the first five minutes before TMP started to pull away to a 22-11 lead after the first quarter.

After a slow start offensively for both teams in the second quarter TMP started to hit shots and bolster their lead. Madyson Koerner and Kayla Vitztum combined for 23 first half points for the Lady Monarchs who held a 41-21 lead at the break.  Maeson Dewey led Plainville with 8 points at the half.

TMP pushed their lead to 27 points in the third quarter and had a running clock most of the fourth quarter and picked up a 68-38 win.  TMP improves their record to 18-1 on season and 9-0 in the MCL.  The win secured the 3rd straight regular season MCL Title for the Lady Monarchs.

Vitztum led TMP with 16 points and Koerner added 15 for TMP who will finish their regular season on Thursday at home against Hutchinson-Trinity.  Plainville was led by Dewey with 13 points.  The Lady Cardinals are off until next Tuesday when they will open up sub-state play.

ROSE MCFARLAND INTERVIEW

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

It took TMP nearly six minutes in the first quarter to get their first field goal as they played from behind the entire first half in their MCL tilt with Plainville on Tuesday night at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.  TMP trailed 15-12 after the first quarter and 31-25 after the break.  The Monarchs were in foul trouble the entire first half and were forced to play with some creative lineups throughout the half.

Plainville scored the first bucket of the second to take an eight point lead after a Hayden Friend bucket and that’s when TMP started to get some offense going as they would score the next 10 points to take their first lead of the game at 35-33.  The battle was intense from there as TMP led 41-40 after three quarters.

The fourth quarter was back and forth with both teams holding leads at some point.  Late in the quarter Plainville held a 52-49 lead when Luke Ruder hit a key three pointer from the corner to tie the game.  TMP would take a 54-52 lead on a long two pointer from David McFarland and would not trail again.  The Monarchs led by two late and Friend missed a three pointer at the buzzer and TMP came out on top with the 57-55 victory.

With the win TMP claims their third straight MCL regular season title as they finish league play at 8-1 and run their overall record to 11-8.  Plainville drops to 13-7 and 6-3 in league.  The Cardinals are off until the start of sub-state play next Monday.  TMP will play their final regular season game on Thursday at home against Hutchinson-Trinity.

Jaylon Brown had 25 points to lead Evansville (14-16, 5-12), which has dropped nine straight to Wichita State. Dru Smith hit 5 3-pointers and finished with 19 points.

Tiger softball splits on final day of the 8-State Classic

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Fort Hays State earned a split on its final day of competition at the 8-State Classic in Arkansas. The Tigers fell victim to a big inning by the opposition in a 6-0 loss to East Central (Okla.), but bounced back for a 3-1 win against Ouachita Baptist to move to 3-8 overall on the season.

East Central 6, Fort Hays State 0
Fort Hays State and East Central played to a scoreless tie for a couple of innings until East Central put up five runs in the third. ECU tacked on another run in the fourth and FHSU did not provide much resistance by producing just three hits. Bailey Kennedy had two and Jeni Mohr had the other.

East Central collected a two-run home run in the third to break the scoreless tie, then three straight singles created more trouble with no outs. A sacrifice fly RBI, followed by a walk, loaded the bases again with ECU up 3-0. An RBI single moved runners up one base making it 4-0, and then a miscue in the field allowed another to score making it 5-0. Two of the runs in the inning were unearned. An RBI single in the fourth capped the scoring for ECU.

Fort Hays State starter Lexie Kimminau lasted 5.0 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk. Carrie Clarke pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits and a walk. Kimminau moved to 0-2 on the season with the loss. Kelbie Crelia moved to 3-1 on the year for ECU with a complete game, striking out four.

Fort Hays State 3, Ouachita Baptist 1
Fort Hays State broke free of a 13-inning scoring drought with a three-run third inning against Ouachita Baptist. That would be enough for starting pitcher Hailey Chapman who moved to 3-4 on the season. Colorado Christian snaps FHSU baseball’s six-game win streak

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State baseball team was unable to overcome a rocky start Sunday afternoon against Colorado Christian, dropping the series finale 12-7. The Cougars batted around in the top of the first, plating seven runs to take the lead for good.

The loss ends a six-game winning streak for the Tigers, moving them to 6-4 on the season. The Cougars improve to 4-7 this season. It was the first win for the Cougars all-time against FHSU (Tigers lead series 7-1).

The Tiger offense strung together 14 hits in the loss, with nine different batters collecting at least one hit. But once the Cougars went to their bullpen, FHSU was unable to manufacture another run.

CCU sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The Tigers got one run back after Ty Redington scored on a sacrifice fly from Nick Hammeke, but the Cougars replied with another run in the second to make the score 8-1.

The Tigers put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs. Jason Nicholson singled through the hole at short before Marcus Altman followed with his first career hit. Ryan Imber kept things going with a sharp grounder just out of reach of the Cougar second baseman, plating Nicholson. Redington swatted a fourth-consecutive single for the Tigers to score two more runs.

After Austin Weiser posted the first scoreless inning of the day for the Tigers, FHSU appeared poised to tie things up in the bottom of the third. Jake Lanferman reached on catcher’s interference before Trevor Hughes went deep for the fourth time this season, narrowing the gap to 8-6. Singles from Dayton Pomeroy and Clayton Basgall and a walk to Altman loaded the bases for Imber with one out. After Pomeroy scored and the other two runners advanced on a wild pitch, Imber lifted a potential game-tying sacrifice fly to right center. However, the Cougars appealed that the runner at second left early and the umpires upheld the appeal, disallowing the tying run.

Colorado Christian added one insurance run in the fourth and eighth innings and two more in the ninth to pad the lead to 12-7. The Tigers had their chances, advancing runners into scoring position in three different innings, but were unable to capitalize.

Justin Hersch (0-1) took the loss after failing to get out of the first inning. Weiser came on to give up three runs (two earned) on six hits in 3.2 innings before Sam Capps struck out five batters and gave up just three hits in 2.1 innings of work.

The Tigers will hit the road to open MIAA play next weekend against third-ranked Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo. The three-game set will begin with a 2 p.m. first pitch Friday afternoon at Crane Stadium.
