The Bronchos stole the ball after a Tiger in-bound pass and Holliday scored a layup to give UCO a 66-65 lead with 13 seconds to play. FHSU came down on the next possession and Davis hit his third field goal of the second half to put the Tigers ahead for good.

Hadley Gillum scored a career-high 25 points to lead FHSU. Davis added 15.

The Bronchos were led by Josh Holliday who scored 19.

Hays hangs on in a tight game in Colby

Dustin Armbruster

The Hays High Indians boys team finished off a busy week with their third road trip in five days. The Hays bus had taken the team to Abilene on Tuesday, Garden City on Friday and the Colby on Saturday. The game was originally supposed to be played in December, but was postponed due to weather and travel concerns.

Hays nailed four of their first five three point shots on their way to a nine point lead 16-7 just inside of three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Hays did not score for the remainder of the quarter but held Colby to just a free throw over the same time period, leaving Hays High with a 27-22 lead after the first quarter.

Hays hit a three pointer to open the second quarter to build their to a first half high 11 at 19-8. Colby responded with a 7-3 run and eventually trimmed the Hays lead down to five at 25-20 and had two chances to get the game back to a single possession contest. Hays led one more time by seven but Colby trimmed the lead down to five by halftime 27-22.

Highlights

Colby scored the first six points of second half to take their only lead of the game at 28-27. Peyton Kieffer answered back with a three pointer just ten second later to spark an 11-0 Hays run that built the lead up to ten, 38-28. The eventually grew to a game high twelve before Colby scored the final four points of the third quarter to get within six at 44-36.

Colby used those six points to start an 11-1 run pull within two at 45-43. Colby missed their one shot at a tie in the fourth quarter and Hays took back a two possession lead following a Tyrese Hill stick back bucket at 47-43. Hays scored just one point in the final two minutes of the game and four during the entire quarter, but it was enough to hang on for a 48-44 victory over Colby.

Coach Rick Keltner

Cole Murphy hit four three pointers, scoring 12 points and Claiborne Kyles also scored 12 and made three three pointers. The two have combined for 13 three pointers in the last two games. Colby got 16 points from Jordan Schippers and 10 from Brooks Curry. Hays improves to 12-6 on the year. Colby falls to 3-15.

Hays heads head to Dodge City on Tuesday and hosts Great Bend on Friday to close out the regular season.

FHSU softball drops a pair on day two at 8-State Classic

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Fort Hays State struggled to score runs on the second day of competition at the 8-State Classic in Arkansas. The Tigers fell to Southwest Baptist 6-0 and took the No. 5 ranked team in the nation, Southern Arkansas, to extra-innings eventually falling 5-1. FHSU is now 2-7 overall.

Southwest Baptist 6, Fort Hays State 0

Southwest Baptist took advantage of an error in the first inning to score a pair of unearned runs and steadily pulled away to win 6-0 in the first contest of the day. The Tigers committed three errors that resulted in a total of three unearned runs for the Bearcats. SBU also had a pair of solo home runs in the game.

The Tigers had several opportunities to score, leaving 10 runners on base. Six of the 10 were left on over the first three innings. Hunter Middleton pitched the first 2.1 innings for SBU, allowing five walks and a hit, but Claire Miller pitched the final 4.2 and allowed just two hits and a walk to the Tigers. Miller picked up the win in relief.

Hailey Chapman pitched a complete game for FHSU. She allowed seven hits and four walks and surrendered just three earned runs. She is now 2-4 overall.

#5 Southern Arkansas 5, Fort Hays State 1 (9 inn.)Carrie Clarke held the nation’s No. 5 ranked team to just one run over eight innings, but ran into trouble in the second extra inning of the game. The Tigers could not capitalize on two chances to upset the Muleriders.

Clarke surrendered a solo home run in the fifth, but Bailey Kennedy knotted the game back up at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single.

FHSU had runners reach base in both the sixth and seventh, but could not come up with a hit to break the tie. Extra innings were played without using the international tiebreaker rule, so both teams went quietly in the eighth.

In the ninth, the Mulerider offense came alive on a two-run homer by Brooke Goad. SAU knocked in two more runs on RBI singles before Lexie Kimminau entered to get the final out of the inning. The Tigers had a runner reach base with one out in the ninth, but could not produce a rally.

Southern Arkansas starter Victoria Taylor moved to 7-0 on the season, allowing six hits and a walk in her complete game effort. Clarke allowed 12 hits and six walks in the loss. She is now 0-2 on the season.

The Tigers play two more games on Sunday facing East Central and Ouachita Baptist.

Indian swimmer breaks school record at state meet

Dustin Armbruster

Freshman Isaac Smith set a school record while representing Hays High swimming in two individual events at the 5-1A State swim meet in Topeka. Smith broke the school record in the 100 meter butterfly on Friday with a 54.84 second swim. He made the “A” final with the swim after entering state with a 57.27 second seed time which was seeded sixteenth. Smith ended up in eighth place in the final with a 55.13 second swim.

Smith qualified for the “B” final in the 200 meter individual medley after swimming nearly six seconds faster than his seed time. He swam a 2:09.95 in the prelims after entering with a seed time of 2:15.48. Smith finished in sixteenth overall after the “B” final with a time of 2:12.10.

The Hays High 200 meter freestyle relay also competed at state but did not make either final. The relay was comprised of Smith, Brett Bowels, Tanner Callis, and Scout Perryman.

Vajnar, VanPelt qualify for Hays wrestling

Dustin Armbruster

The Hays High Indian wrestling team qualified two for the 4A state tournament in Salina next week. Trey VanPelt finished in fourth place at 220 pounds. He made the championship semifinals with a pair of victories before losing to the eventual regional champion and being sent to the back side of the bracket. VanPelt qualified for the state tournament with a 10-2 major decision which sent him into the the third place match where he fell in double overtime 4-2.

Conrad Vajnar had already locked up his state qualifying spot by the time that the Friday session came to a close. Vajnar was the number two seed for the tournament in Buhler and received a bye in the first round. He won by technical fall and a 5-3 decision to make the finals of 152 pounds. Vajnar fell in the championship round, finishing in second.

Hays had six other wrestlers that came within one match of making the state tournament but lost their matches that would have gotten them to the third place pairing.

The 4A state tournament will be held in Salina at the Bicentennial Center on February 24th and 25th.

Tiger baseball gets walkoff win over Colorado Chrstian

HAYS, Kan. – A walk-off single off the bat of Dayton Pomeroy in the 12th inning lifted the Fort Hays State baseball team past Colorado Christian Saturday afternoon at Larks Park, linching the series victory.

The Tigers are now 6-3 this season after collecting their sixth-consecutive win, with the Cougars dipping to 3-7 overall.

Pomeroy’s single to left center drove in Jake Lanferman for the game-winning run after Lanferman connected with a one-out double into the gap. The Tigers needed just one run to win thanks to some clutch pitching. After the Cougars loaded the bases in the top of the 12th with an error, a double and a walk, ZacRothert struck out the next batter looking. Freshman lefty Ryan Ruder (2-0) came in to face the left-handed Dillon McTague, inducing an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play, good enough to collect his second win of the season.

Starter Ben Ramberg was locked in a pitcher’s duel with CCU’s Joey Loranger for much of the afternoon, with both pitchers putting up zeros until the bottom of the fifth inning. Ramberg’s best outing of the season resulted in a no decision after giving up just two runs on six hits in 7.1 innings of work. The junior struck out nine Cougars on the day, the most for a Tiger pitcher so far this season.

The Tigers broke through in the fifth after jared Bogosian led off with a single to left. The catcher moved to second on a groundout before coming around to score on a single from Ty Redington.

Colorado Christian finally got to Ramberg with a solo home run to lead off the top of the seventh. The Tigers responded with another run in the home half, loading the bases after an error and a pair of bad decisions on sacrifice bunts by the Cougar defense. The visitors tried to get the lead runner each time, but both throws came in late. Redington delivered his second RBI of the day when he lifted a sacrifice fly to left.

The Cougars again tied the score with an unearned run in the eighth, forcing the Tigers to go to the bullpen. Rothert allowed one inherited runner to score, but an outfield assist from Lanferman picked up the final out in the inning at home plate.

The Black and Gold grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the eighth when Lanferman was hit by a pitch to lead things off. After swiping second, the sophomore came around to score on a double to left center from Trevor Hughes.

CCU sent the game to extras by tying things up at three in the ninth with a pair of singles, but Rothert stranded the go-ahead run at third by forcing a harmless flyout to right. The Tigers had two on with one out in the bottom of the inning, but the Cougars escaped with a pop up and a strikeout.

Redington and Pomeroy both finished 2-for-5 to lead the Tigers, with five other players adding a hit. The pitching staff combined to strike out 12 Cougar batters, the most in a game for FHSU since 2015 (13, Colorado Mines, 3/10/15).

The teams will face off in the series finale Sunday at noon.

Poor fourth quarter costs Tiger women at Central Oklahoma

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State went scoreless for over six minutes to start the fourth quarter as they see their four-game win streak snapped by Central Oklahoma 76-72 Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Fieldhouse. The Tigers (19-7, 10-7 MIAA) led by 13 in the first quarter and by 11 with 20 seconds to play in the third, but the Bronchos (21-5, 12-5 MIAA) switched to a zone defense to stymie the Tigers and end their four-game losing streak

Tony Hobson Postgame Interview

Game Highlights

After hitting four 3-pointers in the first quarter, FHSU was held to three the rest of the game and were outscored by 11 at the free throw line.

Carlie Heim led the Tigers with a career-high 23 points. Freshman Madision Mittie added a career-best 17 and Tatyana Legette added 11.

Johnson’s tip in sends Kansas State over Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – D.J. Johnson tipped in a miss by Kamau Stokes with 1.6 seconds left, then made a free throw to send Kansas State to a 64-61 win over Texas on Saturday that snapped the Wildcats’ three-game losing streak.

Johnson’s tip came after Kansas State had called a timeout with 8 seconds left to set up a final play. Stokes, who had 14 points, drove to about 12 feet for the shot and Johnson got up over two defenders to get his hand on the ball for the winning basket.

Wesley Iwundu scored 16 points and Barry Brown scored 15 for Kansas State (17-10, 6-8 Big 12), which had lost six of seven coming into the game.

Kendal Yancy scored 13 for Texas (10-17, 4-10) but also got beat to rebound on the final shot and fouled Johnson on the tip. Jarret Allen scored 12 for the Longhorns, who had rallied from nine points down early in the second half.

No. 3 Kansas closer to Big 12 title with win at No. 4 Baylor

WACO, Texas (AP) – Landen Lucas made two free throws with 11 seconds left and No. 3 Kansas grabbed a stranglehold on the Big 12 race with a 67-65 victory at No. 4 Baylor on Saturday.

The Jayhawks (24-3, 12-2) have a three-game lead in the Big 12 standings over Baylor with four games to play. With one more win, Kansas will match the UCLA teams of the 1960s and ’70s by winning its 13th consecutive conference championship.

Baylor (22-5, 9-5) had one more chance, but Manu Lecomte missed on a shot he took surrounded by defenders. As the ball ricocheted off the front of rim and toward the end line as time ran out, Jayhawks guard Devonte Graham threw his arms up in celebration.

Frank Mason III had 23 points for the Jayhawks, including some significant points in a spurt midway through the second half for their first lead. Josh Jackson had 16 points with some highlight dunks.

Johnathan Motley had 19 points for Baylor, which has lost four of its last six games. Lecomte had 16 points and Jo Lual-Acuil 11.

Wichita State cruises past UNI for 10th straight

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Landry Shamet and Darral Willis Jr. scored 14 points apiece and Wichita State throttled Northern Iowa 77-43 on Saturday to run its winning streak to 10.

Markis McDuffie added 12 points for the Shockers (25-5, 15-1 Missouri Valley), who reached 25 wins for the eighth year in a row. Shamet hit four 3-pointers and Wills grabbed 11 rebounds to help Wichita State dominate the boards 48-23.

Spencer Haldeman had 13 points for the Panthers (14-13, 9-7), who had won four straight and nine of 10. Northern Iowa had to make two of its last three shots to finish at 27.5 percent (14 of 51) and avoid its worst shooting game of the season and lowest point total (42).

Wichita State, which has had 10-game winning streaks 10 times dating back to the 1920-21 season, took control early with a 9-0 run. The Shockers led 38-26 at the half and, after the Panthers scored the first six points of the second half, a 14-2 run broke it open. Only twice all game did Northern Iowa make baskets on consecutive possessions.

STOCKTON, Kan-The Stockton Lady Tigers came out with some fire in their veins on Friday night in Stockton.  After losing by 24 points to TMP in the Mid Continent League Tournament Championship game on January 21st the Lady Tigers wanted a better showing on Friday.  The Lady Tigers led through most of the first quarter and led 9-8 after the first quarter.

TMP was able to grab the lead in the second quarter but not by much.  The Lady Monarchs largest lead was only three points and held a 19-18 lead at halftime.  TMP uncharacteristically turned the ball over eight times in the first half.  Most of that due to good Stockton pressure.

The fourth quarter was a battle between two state ranked teams. Stockton cut the TMP to five a couple of times but the Lady Monarchs were able to prevail 54-48.  Haven Hamilton led the for Stockton with 17 points.  The Lady Tigers fall to 16-3 overall and 6-2 in the MCL and will close their season on the road at Phillipsburg on Tuesday.  Koerner scored 27 points to lead TMP.  The Lady Monarchs improve to 17-1 on the season and 8-0 in the MCL and will host Plainville on Tuesday.

Offense was not lacking in the first quarter as the TMP and Stockton boys squared off in a heated MCL matchup.  TMP outlasted Stockton in the first quarter taking a 23-22 lead after one.  The hot shooting continued in the second quarter by both teams.  The Monarchs would lead by as many as 7 points by Stockton’s Kyle Hull banked in a three pointer with a second remaining in the half to cut the TMP lead to 40-36 at the half.

In the third quarter TMP took an early six point lead that wouldn’t last long as Stockton would climb back to a 44-44 tie midway through the third.  TMP would not bend much as the Monarchs regained the lead, 54-51, heading to the fourth quarter.  The Tigers would close the TMP lead to one point a couple of times in the fourth quarter but TMP outscored them 20-9 down the stretch to pick up the 80-68 win.

Stockton drops to 9-10 on the season while TMP improves to 10-8.  The Tigers will finish their regular season at Phillipsburg on Tuesday while TMP will host Plainville.
