FHSU baseball rallies for fifth straight win

HAYS, Kan. – A called third strike with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth helped the Fort Hays State baseball team hold on to defeat Colorado Christian in game one of a three-game set Friday afternoon, 7-6.

The Tigers improved to 5-3 with the victory, extending their winning streak to five games. The Cougars dipped to 3-6 on the year.

Jake Lanferman finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, clubbing his third home run of the season in the third. Dayton Pomeroy and Jared Bogosian also collected a pair of hits at the dish. Alex Ruxlow (2-1) worked around six hits and four walks to give up four unearned runs in six innings of work, earning the win. Clayton Basgall picked up his second save of the season after holding the Cougars scoreless over the final 1.1 innings.

Colorado Christian jumped in front in the top of the second with four unearned runs, all crossing the plate with two outs. The Tigers got two runs back when Lanferman sent a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left in the third, scoring Ty Redington.

Fort Hays State tied things up in the fourth after Pomeroy doubled down the line in left. Bogosian followed suit two pitches later, sending a sharp grounder over the third base bag for another double. Jace Bowman laced a single right up the middle two batters later to plate Bogosian and tie the score at four.

The Tigers took their first lead of the day in the fifth when Lanferman reached on an infield single to deep short. After the sophomore swiped second, Lanferman came around to score when the Cougar second baseman botched a line drive off the bat of  Trevor Hughes.

The Tigers weren’t done, adding a pair of much-needed insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Bryce Witchurch drilled a double to right center before the wheels came off for CCU. Two runs came in to score after the Cougars made a pair of throwing errors on two sacrifice bunt attempts.

The Cougars got one run back in the seventh and another in the eighth to close within one, but Basgall came on to slam the door with two outs in the eighth. After inducing a groundout to end that threat, the junior issued a hit and two hits to put runners at the corners with one out. The next Cougar at the plate popped up a bunt right back to Basgall. After a walk loaded the bases, Basgall struck out the final batter of the game, painting the inside corner on a 3-2 pitch.

The teams will face off again Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Fort Hays State earned a split of its two games on Friday at the 8-State Classic in Arkansas. The Tigers fell victim to a big inning in a 10-0 loss to Henderson State, but bounced back for a 5-1 win over Southern Nazarene. The Tigers moved to 2-5 overall on the season.

Henderson State 10, Fort Hays State 0
Fort Hays State and Henderson State played to a scoreless tie until the top of the fourth. FHSU baseball knocks off Aggies for fourth straight win

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State baseball team won its fourth-consecutive game Wednesday afternoon, knocking off Oklahoma-Panhandle State 10-1. The Tigers move to 4-3 on the year, with the Aggies dipping to 2-5 overall.

Three Tiger pitchers combined to hold OPSU to just one run, working around 10 Aggie hits. Sam Capps (1-0) earned the win after pitching five shutout innings, giving up four hits while striking out four. The junior lowered his season ERA to 0.87. Zac Rothert came on to toss three effective innings, giving up one run on six hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts. Ryan McClure came on to face the minimum in the ninth, inducing a game-ending double play.

The Black and Gold rattled off 16 hits at the plate, with all 10 Tigers making a plate appearance collecting at least one hit. Trevor Hughes recorded the first multi-home run game for a Tiger this season, finishing 2-for-4 while driving in four RBI. Jake Lanferman and Nick Hammeke each collected three hits, with Lanferman picking up his second home run of the season. Dayton Pomeroy clubbed a pair of doubles, scoring two runs.

Lanferman opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two-out solo shot to deep left on the first pitch he saw. Capps worked with runners on base much of the afternoon, retiring the side in order just once in his final inning of work.

Hughes doubled the lead to open the fourth inning, pulling an 0-2 fastball over the fence in right. Pomeroy followed with a double into the gap in left center before scoring on a two-run single up the middle from Clayton Basgall.

The Aggies got one run back in the top of the sixth, but FHSU answered with a pair of insurance runs in the home half of the frame. Jace Bowman singled past the second baseman before swiping second. The senior moved to third on an infield single from Colton Helm. After Ty Redington walked on four-straight pitches to load the bases, Lanferman delivered once again with a single through the right side, plating two for the Tigers.

The Tigers put together a big two-out rally in the fourth inning to build the lead to 10-1. After the first two batters struck out, Hammeke doubled to left center to keep the inning alive. Lanferman legged out an infield single on a slow roller before Hughes delivered his second home run of the day, a no-doubter to right center. Pomeroy kept things going with another double to left center, scoring on a Cody Starkel single to center.

Fort Hays State will wrap up a seven-game home stand this weekend with a three-game series against Colorado Christian Friday through Sunday. First pitch Friday is set for 3 p.m.

TMP started to feed the ball into Creighton Renz for much of the third quarter and it worked.  He was able to tally 8 points in the fourth quarter as TMP closed the lead to 32-28 going to the fourth quarter.  This game had all of the makings of another Monarch’ comeback.

TMP drops to 9-8 overall and will travel to Stockton on Friday night.

FHSU’s Cronin named MIAA men’s Co-Track Athlete of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State junior Decano Cronin has been named the MIAA Men’s Co-Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Feb. 14). He shares the honor this week with distance runner Vincent Kiprop from Missouri Southern.

Cronin set a new FHSU record in the 800 meters by running a time of 1:50.27 at the Concordia Invitational in Seward, Neb. Due to the track size, the time was converted down to 1:48.72 giving him an automatic qualifying mark and the second-fastest time in the nation. He won the event, but teammate Brett Meyer was right on his heels, who also ran an automatic qualifying time. That gives FHSU two of the three runners nationally to post automatic qualifying times in the 800 this season. Cronin already has set four new individual records at FHSU for the indoor season in the mid-distances after transferring to FHSU at the beginning of the spring semester.

At Pittsburg State, Vincent Kiprop broke his own 3000-meter record by more than 13 seconds as he placed second with a time of 8:04.04. That mark ranks second nationally, and tops in the MIAA.

Bryan Burns of Missouri Southern earned the Field Athlete of the Week award for his efforts in the shot put and weight throw this past week.
