Hays High’s Courtney Molleker signs to play soccer with hometown Tigers

Dustin Armbruster

Courtney Molleker started chasing a dream in the game of soccer at a young age. The dream became focused on Fort Hays State University after the school started their women’s soccer program six years ago. Tuesday, Molleker signed her National Letter of Intent to play for the Tigers. The Hays High senior plays soccer nearly year round including clubs out of Wichita.

It will be a year of change for Molleker as both Hays High and Fort Hays State have new coaches. Silas Hibbs takes over the girls and boys soccer teams with his first season this spring for the girls. Fort Hays State recently named Blake Reynolds the second coach in the program’s short history. The Tigers reached the Central Regional Final this past season and won the MIAA Regular Season Championship.

New Hays High coach Silas Hibbs plans on leaning on a veteran leader like Courtney to help build leadership in the program from the very top.

Former coach Jim Maska has seen Molleker play soccer since she began with the Hays Soccer Club and from the very beginning saw the hard work and skill that sat her apart from the rest.

The Hays High girl soccer season will begin with a home match on March 16th versus Life Prep out of Wichita. Molleker says she is glad the decision of where to go to school and play soccer is done before the season begins.

Collin Klein hired as new quarterbacks coach at K-State

MANHATTAN, Kan. – One of the greatest quarterbacks to ever don a Kansas State uniform, Collin Klein has been hired as the Wildcats’ new quarterbacks coach, head coach Bill Snyder announced Tuesday. Klein replaces Del Miller, who announced his retirement on Monday following a 45-year coaching career with 20 years of service at K-State.

A 2012 Heisman Trophy finalist who guided the Wildcats to the Big 12 Championship, Klein returns to Manhattan after serving one year as the quarterbacks coach on Mark Farley’s staff at Northern Iowa.

“Shalin and I are very excited to come back home,” said Klein. “I’m very grateful to Coach Farley and UNI for the experience and opportunity they provided me this past year. Looking ahead, I am eager to get to work with and develop the great young talent at K-State. I am thankful to Coach Snyder for the opportunity to return to a place that I love while learning and growing under his leadership. I also want to express my thanks to Coach Miller, who helped be grow as both a quarterback and a person, and I want to build upon the success he has enjoyed coaching quarterbacks at K-State. We are thrilled to be back as a part of the Manhattan community and Wildcat Family.”

Klein was an assistant director of recruiting operations and quality control coach under Snyder in 2014 before taking over as an offensive graduate assistant the following year.

“Following Del will not be the easiest thing for one to do, but Collin – having been tutored under Del’s guidance – will do well,” Snyder said. “Fortunately, Del will remain with us through the spring to continue to mentor Collin during the out-of-season program and in spring practices. Collin will serve as the quarterback coach and Andre Coleman will coordinate the passing game along with Dana Dimel.

“Collin is a great person: caring, loyal, hard working, responsible and disciplined,” Snyder continued. “He will be received well by his peers, players and support staff, as will his lovely wife Shalin. Collin has a love and passion, not only for football, but even more so for guiding youth toward successful lives. Our program has always been centered around achieving success in five different areas of a young man’s life: becoming the best they possibly can with their faith, their family, as a person, a student and a football athlete. Collin represents those priorities as well as any player we have ever had.”

“I feel very fortunate and thankful that this position is going to a young man that I mentored in Collin Klein,” Miller added. “He holds the same values that I do and I appreciate. He’s a good person. He will be a good teacher, motivator and recruiter. I think our players will be in good hands.”

During his lone season in Cedar Falls, Klein tutored a pair of quarterbacks that split reps in Eli Dunne andAaron Bailey. Dunne finished the year throwing for 1,175 yards and seven touchdowns, which was highlighted by a 418-yard, two-touchdown outing against Missouri State en route to FCS National Performer of the Week honors. Bailey totaled 882 yards and six touchdowns through the air, while he rushed for six scores.

During his previous two seasons on staff at K-State, Klein helped guide Jake Waters to a school-record 3,501 passing yards in 2014 and assisted Joe Hubener and Kody Cook in leading the Wildcats to a bowl in 2015 by splitting time at quarterback.

The 2012 Johnny Unitas Award winner, Klein finished his Wildcat career ranking in the school’s top 10 in 34 different game, season and career record categories. He was the first quarterback from a Power 5 school since 1998 to rush for at least 20 touchdowns and pass for 10 scores in consecutive seasons after doing so in 2011 and 2012. Klein led the Wildcats to a combined 21-5 record as the starting quarterback in 2011 and 2012, which culminated with a No. 1 national ranking, Big 12 Championship and Fiesta Bowl berth in 2012.

Klein obtained his undergraduate degree from K-State in December 2011 in business financial services and controllership. He is married to the former Shalin Spani, a former Wildcat women’s basketball player and the daughter of Kansas State and College Football Hall of Famer Gary Spani.

No. 3 Kansas rallies to beat No. 9 West Virginia in OT

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Frank Mason III had 24 points, including two free throws to cap a frantic comeback from 14 down in the final three minutes of regulation, and No. 3 Kansas stunned No. 9 West Virginia 84-80 in overtime Monday night to assume control of the Big 12 race.

Esa Ahmad scored 20 points and Tarik Phillip had 18 for the Mountaineers (20-6, 8-5), who appeared to have the game locked up when they led 64-50 with 2:58 left in the second half.

Kansas answered with some more Allen Fieldhouse magic.

AP source: Royals, RHP Wood agree to $12M, 2-year deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A person familiar with the deal says the Kansas City Royals and left-hander Travis Wood have agreed to a $12 million, two-year contract.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the deal is pending a physical.

The 30-year-old Wood has spent the past five seasons with the World Series champion Chicago Cubs, where he posted a 2.95 ERA while working exclusively out of the bullpen last year. But he will be given an opportunity to earn a job in the Royals’ starting rotation this spring.

Wood will be reunited with two other members of last year’s Cubs championship team in Kansas City. Outfielder Jorge Soler arrived in a trade for closer Wade Davis and right-hander Jason Hammel agreed to a $16 million, two-year contract.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid makes minor moves to coaching staff

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs have promoted Brad Childress to assistant head coach and announced that Matt Nagy will take over as the sole offensive coordinator in a minor shake-up of Andy Reid’s staff.

Childress and Nagy served as co-offensive coordinators last season. Their new roles were announced Monday.

Childress takes over from David Culley, who served as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach last season. Culley left in the offseason to be the quarterbacks coach in Buffalo.

The Chiefs already have hired Greg Lewis to work with wide receivers.

Nagy began his coaching career with Reid in Philadelphia, then followed him to Kansas City as the quarterbacks coach. Last year was his first as co-offensive coordinator.

K-State’s Bill Snyder addresses health situation

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head football coach Bill Snyder addressed today reports of his current health, which will not affect his duties leading the Wildcat program.

“I feel bad having to release this information about my health in this manner prior to sharing it in person with so many personal friends, distant family, players and their families, past and present, and many of the Kansas State football family so close to our program,” Snyder said. “But, with so much talk presently out there, I certainly owe it to everyone to make them aware of my condition.

“I have been diagnosed with throat cancer and have been receiving outpatient treatment at the KU Medical Center for about three weeks and am getting along very well. The doctors and staffs at both KU Med and M.D. Anderson (in Houston, Texas) have been great; working so very well together to finalize the overall treatment plan which is being conducted in Kansas City. Both ‘teams’ have projected a positive outcome and have worked out a schedule that allows me to be in Kansas City for my regular treatments and still be back in the office on a regular basis through the first week of March. Sean, along with our coaching and support staffs, remain highly productive in carrying out their responsibilities keeping us on track.

“I greatly appreciate our President, Richard Myers, and Athletic Director, John Currie, for their continued support, and I’m very grateful to those who have responded over the past 24 hours via calls, texts, emails, etc., with such kind thoughts and words. And again, my apology to each of you whom I did not have the opportunity to reach personally before this release.

As I’ve said so often: we came to Kansas State University because of the people, we stayed because of the people and we came back because of you, the people. Nothing has changed.

“And most importantly, what an amazing personal family I have been blessed with: Sharon, our children: Sean, Shannon, Meredith, Ross and Whitney and their spouses, along with our eight grandchildren and one great grandchild, have been truly special and motivational for me and for each other during this brief setback. Sharon has made great sacrifices to help me through this and the kids are there every day with their love and encouragement. And today that same love and encouragement is coming from our Kansas State, Manhattan and community families.”

According to Snyder’s doctors, his prognosis is excellent. The hall of fame head coach fully expects to be on the field for the start of spring practice in March.

“Coach Snyder, his family, our football staff, student-athletes and athletics department administration have my full support,” said President Myers. “Coach is one of the most determined individuals I have ever met, and I know he will successfully complete this treatment program and be on the field with our student-athletes in no time.”

Coach Snyder’s health is of the utmost importance, and he has our full support during this time,” Currie said. “We will provide all of the necessary accommodations he and his family need to ensure a smooth treatment process. He will remain our head coach during this treatment period, and we look forward to seeing him on the field this spring and in pursuit of career win No. 203 on September 2.”

K-State opens spring practice March 29 which will conclude with the Purple/White Spring Game on April 22.

Nebraska-Kearney, the second-ranked team in the country, took home first place with 98 points, and was followed closely by seventh-ranked Central Oklahoma with 95 Points. Lindenwood rounded out the top three with 59 points.

At 157 pounds, redshirt-freshman Greg Tooley claimed his first MIAA Championship thanks to a 3-0 day. He started the day with an 18-2 technical fall over Forlanda Parker of Newman to advance to the semifinals, where he cruised to an 8-0 major decision over Bryan Dutton of UCO. In the finals, Tooley squared off with Nebraska-Kearney’s Destin McCauley and claimed the crown with a 3-1 decision.

Brandon Ball, the No. 10 wrestler at 141 pounds went 2-1 on his way to a runner-up finish. Ball started the day with a 9-2 decision over UNK’s Jeff Bizzle, then punched his ticket to the finals with an 8-0 major decision over Chase Kelly of Lindenwood. At 197 pounds, Jon Inman, ranked No. 2 nationally, also took home second place honors on the day with a 2-1 performance. Inman punched his way to the finals with a pin in the first round over Newman’s Sage Eckman, then a 7-3 decision over Lindenwood’s Dillon Archer. Waiting for Inman in the finals was No. 3 ranked Greg Wilson of Central Oklahoma. The two wrestlers split earlier meetings this year with Inman winning the first and Wilson winning the second last Sunday. With a late takedown awarded to Wilson in the second period the score was tied at 4-4 heading into the third. Wilson then had the choice of position and selected bottom. He earned a quick escape to take the 5-4 lead then held Inman at bay for the rest of the period.

At 174 pounds, Micquille Robinson took home third place honors by going 2-1. After dropping his first match, Robinson needed just one match to claim third place. After a bye in the consolation quarter finals and a medical forfeit by his opponent in the consolation semis, Robinson faced Newman’s Kyle Ryan in the consolation finals. It was a close match but Robinson built up an early lead to hold on and claim a 7-5 decision.

Rakim Dean also finished third place at 184 pounds. After receiving a bye in the first round, Dean dropped his first match to UNK’s Zach Stodden, ranked No. 8 in the nation, by a 6-2 decision. In the consolation bracket he received a bye in the semifinals to advance automatically to the third-place match. There he met Central Oklahoma’s Gage Stallworth, whom he handled with a tight 6-5 decision.

Wrapping up the scoring for the Tigers was heavyweight and ninth-ranked Christian Lance who also claimed third place. Lance started the day with a 12-1 major decision over Lindenwood’s John Kramer. In the semifinal bout Lance went toe-to-toe with fourth-ranked Caleb Cotter of Central Oklahoma. For the third time this season, Cotter got the better of Lance in an 8-3 decision. In the consolation bracket, Lance went on to win his next two matches and claim third place thanks to a 3-2 decision over UCO’s Kyle Factor and a 5-2 decision over Lindenwood’s Jacob Borgmeyer.

Tooley, Ball, Inman, Robinson, Dean, and Lance earned All-MIAA honors for their performances by finishing among the top three.

The Tigers will now use an extended break to rest and prepare for the NCAA Super Regional in Golden, Colo., February 24-25.

Lanferman drove in the first run with a single to left before Pomeroy drove home Redington with a sacrifice fly to center.

The center fielder legged out an infield single deep in the hole at short, scoring Trevor Hughes. Pomeroy extended the lead to double figures with a two-run bomb to left field.

After the Cowboys put together one run to extend the game in the top of the seventh, Basgall helped the Tigers walk off in the bottom half with an opposite-field home run to right, tallying his third RBI of the day.

Tiger baseball outlasts New Mexico Highlands

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State baseball team picked up its second-consecutive win Saturday afternoon (Feb. 11) with a 12-10 shootout victory over New Mexico Highlands. By picking up the win, the Tigers improve to 2-3 on the season while the Cowboys drop to 0-5.

Every Tiger that went to the plate picked up a hit. Trevor Hughtes had a career day with the stick, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs scored and a walk. Junior transfer Dayton Pomeroy also turned in a solid performance, recording three hits of his own including his second home run in as many games.

Trailing 3-0 early, the Tigers rallied to tie the score with three runs in the bottom of the second. Pomeroy blasted a one-out home run to left center to start the scoring before an RBI single off the bat of Ryan Imber plated Clayton. An RBI double by Jared Bogosian plated Imber evened the score.

The Cowboys struck in the ensuing half inning, regaining the lead with a two-run frame. The Tigers put up a second-consecutive three spot in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for the first time in the game. With runners on first and second, Basgall delivered an RBI single before a wild pitch plated another run. Basgall then came around to score on an RBI ground out off of the bat of Imber.

Two more runs for the Cowboys in the fourth gave them the lead for the third and final time of the game. Right on cue the Tigers responded in the home half to regain the lead. With runners on second and third, Hughes roped a single up the middle that plated Nick Hammeke. Then another wild pitch allowed Jake Lanferman to score, giving the Tigers 8-7 lead.

A pair of scoreless innings from Ryan Ruder led to the Tigers expanding their lead to 10-7 in the bottom half. Another RBI single by Hughes started the frame for FHSU before Basgall executed a suicide squeeze to perfection to push Hughes across the plate.

The Cowboys closed within one run after plating a pair in the seventh. The Tigers once again responded like they had all afternoon, scoring two runs of their own after the seventh inning stretch. With two outs, Ty Redington singled before Hammeke and Lanferman both walked to load the bases with Hughes coming to the dish. He delivered for the Tigers with his third single of the day, scoring Redington and Hammeke.

The Cowboys wrangled together one more run in the eighth, but the deficit was too much to overcome as Zac Rothert came on to record the final five outs without further damage. The sophomore earned the save in his first appearance of the season, giving up just one hit and inducing a pair of double plays.

Ruder (1-0) picked up the win in relief for FHSU, tossing 3.1 innings while giving up three hits and two unearned runs to go with a pair of strikeouts. He came out of the pen after starter Ben Ramberg lasted 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, on eight hits and one walk while recording four strikeouts.

The Tigers look for the weekend sweep on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 pm.
