FHSU Women’s Golf Finishes 12th in NSU Golf Classic

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Fort Hays State women’s golf team turned in a 12th place finish at the 21st Annual NSU Golf Classic Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 9-10) at Cherokee Springs Golf Course. The Tigers battled hot and blustery conditions both days, posting team scores of 325 and 333 on the par-72, 5,964-yard course.

Taylor DeBoer finished in a tie for 17th with a two-round score of 12-over 156. The senior was tied for eighth after a first-round 76 before signing for an 80 in round two. Kira Mestl posted consecutive rounds of 7-over 79 to finish with a 158, good for 32nd place. The sophomore was the lone Tiger to record multiple birdies on the week, picking up one birdie in both rounds.

Freshman Kate Peterka fired rounds of 83 and 84 to record a tournament total of 167, finishing in a tie for 52nd. Peterka was successful at evading the big number, leading the team with just one double or worse on the week. Madison Roether (87-91-178) finished T64 and Katie Brungardt (94-90-184) placed 67th to round out the scoring for the Tigers.

The Tigers sat in 10th after their first-round 325 before finishing the tournament with a two-round score of 658. MIAA-newcomer Rogers State took the team title with rounds of 307 and 302 while Aitana Hernandez from host Northeastern State took the individual crown with a 3-over 147 (72-75).

Fort Hays State has a week off before heading back out on the road September 24-25. Next up is a short trip north to Awarii Dunes Golf Course outside Kearney, Neb. for the MIAA Fall Preview.

Raiders beat Broncos 24-16 in 1st game after Brown’s release

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Derek Carr threw a touchdown pass on the opening drive of the season, rookie Josh Jacobs ran for two scores and the Oakland Raiders responded to a tumultuous week surrounding former receiver Antonio Brown by beating the Denver Broncos 24-16 on Monday night.

The Raiders (1-0) took out all the frustration over the drama surrounding Brown with a convincing win over the AFC West rival Broncos (0-1). The offensive line cleared holes for Jacobs and protected Carr, and the defense harassed Joe Flacco into three sacks and kept Denver out of the end zone until 2:15 remained in the game.

The win spoiled the Denver debuts for Flacco and coach Vic Fangio and ended the NFL’s longest opening weekend winning streak at seven games.

The final scheduled home opener at the Coliseum before the Raiders planned move to Las Vegas next season began with derisive chants from the boisterous fans toward Brown. Those only grew louder after each successful pass play as both the fans and Raiders players seemed relieved to have the monthlong saga over Brown in the past.

He arrived with optimism following a trade from Pittsburgh in March. But a bizarre foot injury, fight with the NFL over his helmet, skipped practices, multiple fines, a run-in with general manager Mike Mayock and odd social media posts ultimately led to the decision to release the game’s most prolific receiver two days before the opener.

Brown agreed to a deal with New England just hours after being granted his wish to be released by Oakland on Saturday and the Raiders wasted little time proving they had moved on.

They took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards in 10 plays. Carr completed all five passes to four receivers, capped by an 8-yard TD to Tyrell Williams.

Oakland added another score in the second quarter when Jacobs capped a 95-yard drive with a 2-yard run to make it 14-0. Jacobs scored again in the fourth quarter, becoming the first Raider to run for two TDs in his debut.

BY THE NUMBERS

Carr completed 22 of 26 passes for 259 yards and wasn’t sacked once after going down 51 times last year. … Jacobs had 23 carries for 85 yards and a 28-yard reception. … Wiliams had six catches for 105 yards, including a game-sealing 10-yard catch on third down after the two-minute warning. … Flacco was 21 for 31 for 268 yards with a 1-yard TD pass to Emmanuel Sanders in Sanders’ first game back from a ruptured Achilles’ tendon.

UNDER PRESSURE

After recording an NFL-low 13 sacks last year following the trade of Khalil Mack, the Raiders got off to a much better start this year with the pass rush, sacking Flacco three times. Benson Mayowa had two sacks, becoming the first Oakland player to record more than one in a game since Mack had two against Denver on Dec. 17, 2017. Rookie Clelin Ferrell also had one.

MISSED CHANCE

Denver’s comeback attempt fell short in part because the Broncos had to settle for field goals on three red zone trips in the second half. A pair of third-down sacks by Mayowa and Ferrell stalled two drives and DaeSean Hamilton dropped a potential TD in the end zone.

INJURIES

Broncos: RT Ja’Wuan James left the game in the first half with a knee injury. … WR Tim Patrick left in the second half with a hand injury.

Raiders: CB Gareon Conley was taken off the field strapped to a stretcher with a neck injury after being hit in the head by teammate Johnathan Abram.

Conley was down on the ground for several minutes with players on both teams kneeling on the ground out of concern. Conley was taken off the field on a stretcher but was able to give a thumbs up to the crowd.

UP NEXT

Broncos: Host Chicago on Sunday. Fangio spent the past four seasons as defensive coordinator for the Bears.

Raiders: Host Kansas City on Sunday in a second straight division matchup. The Chiefs have won eight of the past nine games in the series.

Tigers drop to No. 25 in AFCA top 25 poll; Four MIAA teams ranked

WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State moved down to No. 25 in the latest edition of the AFCA Division II Top 25 Poll on Monday (Sept. 9). The Tigers drop 14 spots in the poll after their season-opening loss at Central Missouri.

The MIAA now has four teams inside the Top 25 of the poll. Even though Northwest Missouri State won its season opener against Missouri Western, NWMSU moved down one spot to No. 7 in this week’s poll. With its win over Fort Hays State, Central Missouri jumped from the receiving votes section to No. 21 in the poll. Pittsburg State also moved up out of the receiving votes section to No. 23 after defeating Central Oklahoma in Week 1. Fort Hays State hangs on in the poll at No. 25. Emporia State is the only MIAA team referenced in the receiving votes section of this week’s poll.

Fort Hays State looks to get back on track this week when it hosts Missouri Western on Thursday night (Sept. 12) in Hays at 7 pm. The Tigers are looking to avenge a 23-13 loss to the Griffons last year in St. Joseph. Missouri Western fell to Northwest Missouri State in Week 1 by a score of 45-35, but the 35 points is the most scored in a game against Northwest Missouri since 2014 when Pittsburg State scored 35 in a win over NWMSU.

Tiger men’s soccer falls at Eastern New Mexico

PORTALES, N.M. – Following their most recent defeat, 0-2, against Eastern New Mexico on Sunday, the No. 3 ranked Tigers begin the 2019 season with a record of 1-1-0. Eastern New Mexico picked up its second-consecutive shutout over a ranked opponent to open 2019 after downing No. 17 ranked Colorado Mesa on Thursday evening.

The match began on time but nearly 10 minutes in, the game was put on hold for a 30-minute lightning delay. Out of the break, senior forward Santiago Agudelo was handed a yellow card. However, the action from the Tigers would be very quiet for the remainder of the half.

In the 35th minute, the Greyhounds found strength in an attack that was played off of a foul drawn by Lucas Vaz. Gabriel Peres took his second shot, which was saved by senior goalkeeper Cullen Fisch and resulted in a corner kick for Eastern New Mexico.

Moments later, the Greyhounds’ Joaquin Borruel found the back of the net on an assist from Charlie Hackshall. The Tigers would attempt to counter their one-goal deficit but only took two shots in the remaining 10 minutes of the first half.

Following halftime, it only took five minutes for Eastern New Mexico to add another tally to its scoreline. The Tigers turned possession over to the Greyhounds with an offside call. Defender Alec Bevis committed a foul and under 30 seconds later, the Greyounds’ Peres scored his first goal of the 2019 season. The remainder of the second half was silent on the scoresheet.

Fort Hays State totaled 11 shots during their performance and Fisch contributed five saves in the loss.

The Tigers will take on Maryville University for a 3 p.m. kickoff in Kansas City on Thursday, Sept. 12. The two sides have never faced off in the history of their programs. The Saints, a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), hold a 2-0 record to begin their campaign.

Chiefs lose Hill, handle Jags behind Mahomes, Watkins

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Despite losing star receiver Tyreek Hill early, Patrick Mahomes threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns while leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a testy and tactful 40-26 victory over the injury-riddled Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Mahomes took a beating and even had to leave the game to get his left ankle taped in the second quarter. He nonetheless looked every bit as good as he did during last year’s MVP campaign, leading the Chiefs to scores on each of their first seven possessions.

Jacksonville lost quarterback Nick Foles to a broken left clavicle.

Sammy Watkins caught nine passes for a career-high 198 yards and three TDs. Watkins slipped through the middle of Jacksonville’s defense for a 68-yard score on the third play of the season and added a 49-yard TD reception late in the opening quarter. He made defenders Ronnie Harrison, Jalen Ramsey and Miles Jack look silly while strolling into the end zone twice. He beat Ramsey again for a short TD in the fourth period.

Jacksonville had major issues on both sides of the ball, fairly reminiscent of last year’s 16-point loss at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 5. This one may have been more of a debacle — and maybe more costly.

Mahomes picked apart what some believed is an elite defense, throwing for 313 yards in the first half and doing most of it without Hill. The three-time Pro Bowler departed after landing on his left shoulder near the sideline.

But considerably more concerning for the Jaguars, they lost Foles in the opening quarter, and rookie linebacker Quincy Williams (knee) in the second half.

Chris Jones hit Foles as he released a 35-yard TD pass to DJ Chark. Jones landed on top of Foles, but did not draw a flag.

Foles looked to be in pain as he walked to the sideline to be evaluated. He then jogged into the locker room and did not return.

The Jaguars gave Foles a four-year, $88 million contract in April with the belief he would solve the franchise’s two-decade-old search for a quarterback. He didn’t make it through a quarter, and now Jacksonville will have rookie Gardner Minshew under center for a stretch. Minshew was the team’s lone bright spot: He completed 22 of 25 passes for 275 yards, with two TDs and an interception.

The Jaguars already were without starting left tackle Cam Robinson (knee) and backup Cedric Ogbuehi (hamstring), leaving guard Will Richardson to make his first career start at a new position.

JACK EJECTED

Jaguars linebacker Jack was ejected in the second quarter after taking a swing at Chiefs receiver Demarcus Robinson. Jack had to be restrained by team officials and essentially pulled off the field.

Jack and receiver Sammy Watkins got into a shoving match after a fumble, and then Robinson came in and shoved Jack in the back. Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey and others joined in, prompting officials to throw five flags and a hat onto the ground. Jack eventually got the boot after a lengthy discussion.

RARE FUMBLE

Jacksonville’s Leonard Fournette gained 66 yards on 13 carries and fumbled for the first time in his three NFL seasons. Damien Wilson stripped the ball out of Fournette’s hands after a catch in the flat.

It was Fournette’s first lost fumble since Nov. 12, 2016, during his junior year at LSU. That came at Arkansas.

UP NEXT

Chiefs: play at rival Oakland. Kansas City has won eight of the last nine in the series.

Jaguars: play at Houston. The Texans swept Jacksonville last season.

Hirsch’s goal lifts Tiger women’s soccer to first win of 2019

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A goal from senior Darby Hirsch and a strong defensive effort was enough to help the Fort Hays State women’s soccer team secure its first win of the new year Sunday (Sept. 8), knocking off Sioux Falls 1-0.

The defense was solid for the Tigers, allowing just three shots on goal for the Cougars. Sophomore goalkeeper Deonna Wellbrock (1-0) got the start today and pitched her third career shutout, stopping all three shots she faced.

The first half was back-and-forth as neither team could break through offensively. The Tigers broke the tie just three minutes in the second half when Hirsch scored on a lob over the goalkeeper from just outside the left corner of the 18-yard box. Cailey Perkins earned the assist after setting up the goal with a great pass.

After the goal by Hirsch, the defense kept the Cougars’ chances limited until very late in the match. With only ten seconds left, Sioux Falls was awarded an indirect free kick inside the penalty box. After a quick touch, Olivia Valdez took a strike on goal but Wellbrock made a fantastic diving save to her right to secure the win for the Tigers.

The Tigers finished the game with four shots on goal, all by different players.

Fort Hays State comes back home with a 1-1 record after the road trip, while Sioux Falls moves to 0-1 on the year. The Tigers open up at home against CSU-Pueblo on Friday night (Sept. 13). The matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Royals shutout in finale with Marlins

MIAMI (AP) — Sandy Alcantara became the first Marlins pitcher with two shutouts in his rookie season since Dontrelle Willis, and Miami beat the Kansas City Royals 9-0 Sunday.

Alcantara (5-12) threw a four-hitter with two walks and eight strikeouts for his first victory since the All-Star break. Willis had two shutouts while winning Rookie of the Year in 2003.

Starlin Castro hit his 18th home run and drove in two for the Marlins, who pounded out 13 hits to avoid a sweep after being held to two runs and 11 hits over the first two games.

Alcantara, pitching a day after his 24th birthday, was 0-4 with a 4.99 ERA in his previous 10 starts after being named to his first All-Star team. The right-hander also pitched a two-hitter against the Mets in May.

Kansas City starter Mike Montgomery (3-8) allowed five runs and eight hits in four innings. Montgomery was the last pitcher in the majors to throw two shutouts as a rookie, doing it in 2015 with Seattle.

Adalberto Mondesi and Hunter Dozier had the only hits for the Royals, who still won their third consecutive series of three or more games for the first time since July 2017.

Miami’s Lewis Brinson and Harold Ramirez each knocked in two runs, and Garrett Cooper had three hits.

Castro homered to left in the first inning, and the Marlins plated four runs in the fourth on five singles.

Four walks issued by Kyle Zimmer in the fifth helped the Marlins extend their lead to 7-0.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: RHP Jake Newberry (shoulder) is nearing a return after throwing well Saturday. “We were going to do a simulated game on Tuesday, but if he feels good, we might just activate him Tuesday,” manager Ned Yost said.

Marlins: RHP Jordan Yamamoto (forearm) is looking to make his return to the mound before the season ends.

UP NEXT

Royals: RHP Jakob Junis (9-12, 4.94 ERA) will begin a three-game series at the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. He is 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA in two starts against the White Sox.

Marlins: RHP Robert Dugger (0-1, 4.00) opens a four-game home series with the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday with his fourth start of the season.

McBroom doubles twice to lead Royals over Marlins

MIAMI (AP) — Ryan McBroom continues to produce in his first week with the Kansas City Royals.

McBroom doubled twice and had three RBI to help the Royals beat the Miami Marlins 7-2 on Saturday night.

“It’s been so exciting and truly a-dream-come-true,” said McBroom, who is hitting .375 with four RBI since the Royals acquired him from the New York Yankees organization Aug. 31.

McBroom’s bases-clearing double off Miami reliever Ryne Stanek in the seventh capped a six-run inning.

“Coming to a new ball club, making my major league debut, the nerves were high,” McBroom said. “You want to come in and impress but don’t want to worry about pressing.”

Jorge Soler hit his 41st homer, a solo blast in the ninth, and Hunter Dozier had two hits for the Royals, who have won six of seven.

Adam Conley (2-8) started the seventh in relief of Marlins starter Caleb Smith and allowed Bubba Starling’s leadoff infield single and walked pinch hitter Cheslor Cuthbert. Miami left-fielder Austin Dean muffed Whit Merrifield’s single that allowed Starling to score from third on the error and tie it at 1.

Dozier’s single with the bases loaded off Stanek put the Royals ahead 2-1 and Alex Gordon’s bases loaded increased Kansas City’s advantage.

Danny Duffy (6-6) allowed one run and two hits in six innings. Duffy struck out five and walked two.

“I knew that we had to continue to battle,” Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. “Duffy gave us an opportunity to not have to score a bunch of runs to get back in it.”

Harold Ramirez’s one-out single off Royals reliever Jacob Barnes in the eighth got Miami to within 6-2. Tim Hill retired pinch-hitter Martin Prado on an inning-ending double play and got the final five outs for his first save.

“Regardless of where we are in the standings, we don’t take a single pitch for granted,” Duffy said. “The way the guys battled in the top of the seventh we all want to do the best we can for each other and finish on a strong note.”

Smith pitched six shutout innings, allowed four hits, struck out eight and walked two. The left-hander was lifted after 100 pitches.

“Tonight was a lot better command wise and all around pitching,” Smith said. “I was able to locate my pitches and throw where I wanted to.”

The Marlins took an early lead after Duffy hit Smith with the bases loaded in the second. Duffy allowed a one-out single to Jorge Alfaro and walked Dean and Lewis Brinson.

SOLER’S MILESTONE:

With his homer, Soler surpassed Tony Perez and is now the third Cuban-born player with most home runs in a season. Rafael Palmeiro hit 47 for the Texas Rangers in 1999 and 2001 and Jose Canseco hit 46 while with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1998.

DUFFY IMPRESSED WITH HIS HIT:

Not getting the opportunity to bat frequently as an American League pitcher, Duffy singled in his second plate appearance Saturday. Duffy struck out in his other at bat.

“I’ll take that, those are few and far between,” Duffy said. “I thought I put together a good at bat the first AB. I was seeing it. But the second at bat, you just kind of close your eyes and swing.”

UP NEXT:

Royals: LHP Mike Montgomery (3-7, 4.42) has allowed two earned runs over 12 innings in his last two starts.

Marlins: RHP Sandy Alcantara (4-12, 4.26) seeks to snap a six-game losing skid in his team-leading 28th start Sunday. Alcantara is winless since June 21 but has limited opposing batters to a .167 average in his last six starts.

Coastal Carolina overpowers Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — CJ Marable rushed for 148 yards and recorded two touchdowns to lead Coastal Carolina to a 12-7 victory over Kansas on Saturday night.

Fred Payton connected with Marable for 20 yards to pick up the Chanticleers (1-1) lone touchdown of the first half; however, a missed extra-point attempt in conjunction with a shanked 31-yard field goal by Massimo Biscardi sent the Chanticleers to the locker room facing a 7-6 deficit.

To open the second half, Chandler Kryst picked off the pass of Carter Stanley, fueling a 64-yard drive by Coastal Carolina resulting in a second touchdown for Marable and an ultimately insurmountable lead for the Chanticleers.

A third missed field goal by Biscardi, this time from 27 yards, gifted Kansas (1-1) one final offensive drive late in the fourth quarter, yet the Jayhawks were unable to convert, turning the ball over on downs after gaining only eight yards.

In his highly-anticipated season debut following a one-game suspension, Kansas’ Pooka Williams Jr. rushed for 99 yards on 22 carries to lead the Jayhawks.

Khalil Herbert tacked on an additional 82 yards on the ground, including a 41-yard touchdown run to cap the Jayhawks’ opening offensive drive and secure the lone Kansas touchdown. However, the efforts of the shifty Kansas running back unit were unable to make amends for two untimely interceptions and a 107-yard passing performance by Stanley.

THE TAKEAWAY

Coastal Carolina: In only their second season as a full-time FBS team, the Chanticleers were to overpower their first Big 12 opponent in program history for much of the evening, hanging 291 total yards of offense on Kansas compared to the Jayhawks’ 280. Cracking a five-game losing streak, Coastal Carolina showed improvements offensively following a struggle-ridden opener against Eastern Michigan last week featuring four interceptions.

Kansas: Falling to 1-1, the slim margin of victory last week paired with the loss to Coastal Carolina leaves much to be desired from the newly-renovated Kansas offense. The return of Williams appeared to provide a needed spark to the Kansas run-game, allowing the Jayhawks to pick up 68 more yards on the ground than they recorded last week.

UP NEXT

Kansas: The Jayhawks head to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, on Friday to take on Boston College in their first matchup on the road this season.

Coastal Carolina: The Chanticleers will host Norfolk State on Saturday.

FHSU volleyball splits on day two of Eagle Classic

CHADRON, Neb. – The Fort Hays State volleyball team picked up a split on day two of the 2019 Eagle Classic Saturday, wrapping up the weekend with a thrilling five-set win over South Dakota Mines. The Tigers return to Hays 1-3 on the season, while Montana State Billings improved to 1-2 with their win over FHSU and Mines moves to 1-3.

Delaney Humm picked up 36 kills on the day, averaging 5.1 kills per set through the two matches.

Montana State Billings 3, Fort Hays State 0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-17)
The Tigers put together their best offensive performance of the season against the Yellowjackets (.269 attack percentage), but untimely errors cost FHSU a chance at its first win. The Tigers outperformed MSUB in nearly every statistical category, but the combination of 18 attack errors, 10 service errors and seven setting miscues made all the difference.

Montana State Billings opened the match with authority, scoring six of the first seven points en route to a 10-4 lead. The Tigers responded by capturing 12 of the next 13 rallies, including a 9-0 run to jump in front 16-11.

Freshman Delaney Humm recorded four of her team-high 14 kills during the big Tiger rally. The Tigers stretched the lead to eight later in the set when back-to-back kills from Morgan Christiansen made the score 23-15. A kill from Morgan West three rallies later gave the Tigers a chance at set point, but the Yellowjackets pulled off an impressive rally of nine-straight points to take the set 26-24.

The teams went back-and-forth for much of the second set before FHSU used a 7-1 run to take an 18-15 lead. The Tigers were unable to hold the lead after six FHSU errors helped the Yellowjackets close the set on a 10-4 run.
