16th-ranked Tiger wrestling drops final dual of the season to No. 2 Lopers

KEARNEY, Neb. – Fort Hays State wrestling dropped its final dual of the season at the hands of Nebraska-Kearney by the score of 31-16 on Thursday. The 16th-ranked Tigers finished the dual season at 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA, good for a fourth-place finish. The second-ranked Lopers improved to 16-6 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

The Tigers started the match out with a major decision win in the 125-pound bout by Conrad Cole over Vladyslav Kazakov, 14-3. After a fall by the Lopers in the 133-pound bout, No. 10 ranked Brandon Ball gave the Tigers the lead once more after a tight 7-6 decision over No. 11 Jacob Wasser at 141 pounds.

Another pinfall by the Lopers at 149 pounds, kept the see-saw scoring in effect, but set the stage for redshirt-freshman Greg Tooley to pull off his biggest win yet as a Tiger. Tooley took the mat against the defending national champion Destin McCauley. Tied 1-1 after three periods, Tooley earned a 5-1 sudden victory in overtime over No. 2 ranked McCauley. That pulled the Tigers within two at 12-10.

But UNK flexed its muscle in the 165 through 184-pound matches, extending its lead to 28-10 thanks to two major decisions and a pin. Second-ranked Jon Inman then cut that lead to 28-16 when he picked up a pin of his own over Trey Schlender. At heavyweight, No. 9 ranked Christian Lance dropped a tough 3-1 decision to No. 3 ranked Kevin Barrett and the Lopers won the dual by 15 points.

The Tigers rest for a couple days before they hit the mats in Kearney once more for the MIAA Championships on Sunday (Feb. 12). The wrestling is scheduled to begin at 10 am.

Royals announce 2-year deal for Jason Hammel

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals have announced their $16 million, two-year contract with Jason Hammel, a move designed to shore up the starting rotation after the death of Yordano Ventura in a car accident last month.

Hammel will make $5 million this season and $9 million next season, and the deal announced Wednesday includes a $2 million buyout of a 2019 mutual option. Hammel can make a $250,000 annual performance bonus if he throws 200 innings.

Right-hander Alec Mills was designated for assignment Wednesday to clear space for Hammel on the 40-man roster. Hammel had agreed to the contract late Sunday pending a physical.

He slots into a starting rotation that includes left-handers Danny Duffy and Jason Vargas and right-hander Ian Kennedy, with the fifth spot up for grabs in spring training.

Bishop Carroll Catholic High School

WICHITA — Bishop Carroll Catholic High School announced this week that longtime assistant coach Dusty Trail has been named the new head football coach at Bishop Carroll.

Trail and his wife, Wendy, have three children, the oldest who will be a freshman at Bishop Carroll this fall.  Trail joined Alan Schuckman’s staff in 1995 as assistant football coach and physics teacher. He has been Carroll’s offensive coordinator for 22 years and has been an integral part in developing the team into one of the most successful programs in the area, winning the KSHSAA State Championship twice and finishing second twice.

Trail, from Osborne, played collegiately at Hutchinson Community College and at Fort Hays State University.  Before coming to Bishop Carroll, he was a graduate assistant at Fort Hays State for four years and coached high school football in Texas for two years.

“I am excited for this opportunity, even though it’s a little daunting to follow a coaching legend like Alan Schuckman. With that being said, the goal of this program will never change. We are always working toward forming our players into good Catholic young men who will positively contribute to this community,” Trail said. “I want to thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this strong program, especially at Bishop Carroll where tradition runs so deep. Thank you for your support and I’m looking forward to this fall!”

No. 3 Kansas bounces back from loss, tops Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Frank Mason III had 21 points, Josh Jackson added 18 despite dealing with foul trouble, and No. 3 Kansas bounced back from a rare home loss to hold off Kansas State 74-71 on Monday night.

The Jayhawks (21-3, 9-2 Big 12) beat the Wildcats (16-8, 5-6) for the fifth straight time and the 19th time in 22 meetings, though it was just as nip-and-tuck as their meeting in Lawrence.

The game was tied 63-all with 2:50 left when Kansas ripped off six quick points, but the Wildcats kept hanging around. D.J. Johnson hit three of four foul shots down the stretch, and Kamau Stokes hit a 3-pointer from the wing to get within 72-69 with 19.2 seconds to go.

Devonte Graham calmly hit two more free throws to put the game away.

Dean Wade led the Wildcats with 20 points. Stokes added 16 points and eight boards, Johnson had 14 points and Wesley Iwundu contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds.

No. 7 Bronchos remain perfect with win over No. 16 Tiger wrestling

EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State, ranked 16th nationally, dropped to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA on Sunday, suffering a defeat by the score of 30-9 at the hands of seventh-ranked Central Oklahoma. The Bronchos improved to 18-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to a 3-2 decision by Conrad Cole in the 125-pound bout. In the following 133-pound bout, the Bronchos evened the score at 3-3 with a decision victory of their own.

The Tigers regained the lead once again thanks to a come-from-behind decision by 10th-ranked Brandon Ball at 141 pounds. Falling behind 8-2 early, Ball fought back in the final two periods to win 11-8. It was the last lead in the team score FHSU would enjoy.

In the 149-pound bout, UCO jumped into the lead for good with a pin. The Bronchos extended their lead to 12-6 after the 157-pound bout of Bryan Dutton and Greg Tooley resulted in a 6-3 decision for Dutton.

UCO quickly doubled its points and led 24-6 with a pin in the 165-pound bout and a forfeit by the Tigers at 174. In the 184-pound match, Rakim Dean lost at the hands of Gage Stallworth in an 11-5 decision making the score 27-6.

With the match in hand for UCO, the final two tiger wrestlers still had pride and individual records on the line. In the 197-pound bout No. 2 ranked Jon Inman faced No. 3 ranked Greg Wilson. Wilson got a late takedown in the third period to pick up a 3-1 decision, giving Inman his first loss of the season. It evened the count between the wrestlers for the season as Inman got the best of Wilson early in the year.

Christian Lance picked up the third win of the day for the Tigers in the heavyweight bout, making the final score 30-9. Lance, the No. 9 wrestler at 285 pounds, faced Evan McGee. Both scored escape points early in the second and third periods to send the match to overtime at 1-1. Lance eventually came out victorious in a marathon that went to the second tiebreak period. Lance claimed the win thanks to more riding time advantage in the tiebreak session.

The Tigers will wrap up the dual season on Thursday when they travel to Kearney, Neb. to take on No. 2 ranked Nebraska Kearney. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 7pm.

FHSU baseball falls at Northwestern Oklahoma State

ALVA, Okla. – The Fort Hays State baseball team wrapped up the opening weekend with a 13-3 loss against Northwestern Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon (Feb. 4). The Tigers are now 0-3 in the young season, with the Rangers improving to 2-1 overall.

The Tigers jumped in front early, with the first three batters of the game coming around to score. NWOSU got one back in the bottom half of the first before taking the lead for good with four runs in the second inning. The Rangers didn’t stop there, tacking on two runs in the third, four in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning.

Jake Lanfermann finished 2-for-3 on the day, legging out an RBI triple to left in his first at bat before singling through the left side in the third. Nick Hammeke also connected with his first extra-base hit of the season, going 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Ty Redington opened the game by drawing a walk, quickly coming around to score on Hammeke’s double to right center. Lanferman followed with his triple, plating Hammeke. Trevor Hughes picked up an RBI groundout in the next at bat, and four batters into the game the Tigers led 3-0. After the Rangers went to the bullpen, the Tiger bats went cold, scattering four hits over the next 6.2 innings.

Free bases poisoned the Tiger pitching, with a total of four errors, three walks, four hit-by-pitches and two balks being recorded in the game. Connor Boyer took the loss after giving up three earned runs across 1.2 innings of work, striking out two Ranger batters.
