Iowa State rallies to stun No. 2 Kansas in OT

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Deonte Burton hit seven 3-pointers and scored 29 points, Monte Morris added 25 and Iowa State rallied from a big halftime deficit to beat No. 2 Kansas 92-89 in overtime Saturday, ending the Jayhawks’ 51-game winning streak at Allen Fieldhouse.

Naz Mitrou-Long added six 3-pointers and 22 points for the Cyclones (14-8, 6-4 Big 12), who had a school-record 18 3-pointers while forcing the Jayhawks (20-3, 8-2) into 21 turnovers.

They also overcame a monster performance by the Jayhawks’ Frank Mason III, who had a career-best 32 points while going 9 of 11 from the field, 4 of 5 from beyond the arc and 10 of 12 at the free throw line.

Hays girls fall to hot shooting Fire

Dustin Armbruster

The Hays High Lady Indians traveled to Wichita on Friday to take on the Life Prep Academy Fire. It was a unique setting for the game. The contest was played at Wichita Hoops in Bel Aire. The court Hays played on was less than a year old, with the first half of the facility being completed two years ago.

Life Prep scored the first nine points of the game as Hays turned it over on three of their first five possessions. The Indians put in the next six points to get back within 9-6. That was as close as Hays would get all night. The Fire closed the quarter on a 9-2 run to lead 18-10. Hays trailed 21-14 when Life Prep went on a 27-9 run over the final 6:40 of the half to lead 48-23.

Highlights

The Indians never threatened in the second half as the closest they would get was 24 at 51-27. Life Prep shot 48% from the field and win 78-43. Regan Tibbits led the night with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Hays High had three players score six points for a team high.

Coach Kirk Maska

Hays drops to 9-5 on the season, stopping a three game win streak. Life Prep Academy is now 13-6.
Both the girls and boys return to action on Thursday and Friday as they travel to Salina to play the Central Mustangs and then return home to host Liberal.

TMP sweeps Norton

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

Girls: TMP 62, Norton 38
Boys: TMP 55, Norton 49

HAYS, Kan-TMP and Norton traded first quarter runs in what turned out to be an entertaining first half of play at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays.  TMP started the game on a 5-0 run and Norton answered with an 8-2 march.  The Lady Monarchs would take a 9-8 lead after the first quarter.

Norton opened the second quarter with a bucket and it happened to be their last lead of the game.  TMP would extend the lead to five a couple of times and that included their 22-17 halftime lead.  The Lady Monarchs struggled on offense in the first half with 10 turnovers.

TMP turned their offense up a notch in the second half and quickly pulled away in the third quarter with an 11-0 run that put the game away.  The Lady Monarchs would extend their lead to as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter and picked up the 62-38 victory.

Baylee Miller paced Norton with 13 points and Taryn Kuhn added 11 for the Lady Jays who dropped to 9-6 on the season and 4-2 in the Mid Continent League.  Madyson Koerner led TMP with 20, all of them in the second half. The Lady Monarchs improved to 14-1 and 6-0 in the MCL.  They are off until next Friday when they face Phillipsburg.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

A game that has turned into a rather intense rivalry ensued when the TMP and Norton boys took the floor.  Norton led 9-3 early but TMP was not to be intimidated on their home floor.  The Monarchs went on a 20-3 run spanning into the second quarter.

The Bluejays were able to stem the tide and the two teams settled into a solid second quarter.  Norton cut the Monarch lead to 7 at 25-18 but the TMP finished the quarter with a 6-3 push to lead 31-21 at halftime. Michael Lager led TMP with 10 points at the break.  Tyus Henson led Norton with 12 while leading scorer Landon Porter was limited to only three made free throws in the the first 16 minutes.

Norton came out in the third quarter with determination behind Porter who scored 7 points in the first two minutes. The Bluejay’s flurry cut the Monarch’ lead to 34-30 but TMP would have an answer as Lager and Kaleb Hagens would hit back to back buckets to extend the lead back to 8 points. The Monarchs led 42-34 going to the final period.

The fourth quarter was full of ups, downs and runs for both teams. TMP used an 8-0 run to take their largest lead, 54-41. Norton would immediately answer with an 8-0 run of their own to close the gap to 54-49 late in the game. Both teams would have a couple of empty possessions as TMP pulled out the 55-49 upset over the #3 ranked (3A) team in the state.

Porter led Norton with 24 points and Henson finished with 17 as the Bluejays drop to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in the Mid Continent League.  Lager led TMP with 18 points and McFarland finished with 14.  The win ends a three game losing streak for the Monarchs who improve to 8-7 overall and 5-1 in the MCL.  TMP will play next Friday at home against Phillipsburg.

FHSU baseball drops two in Oklahoma to start season

ALVA, Okla. – The Fort Hays State baseball team opened the 2017 season Friday afternoon with a doubleheader at Northwestern Oklahoma State’s Glass Family Field at Myers Stadium. The Tigers fell to Northwest Missouri State, 4-2, before dropping another 4-2 decision to host NWOSU. It was the first action of the season for all three teams.

Northwest Missouri State 4, Fort Hays State 2
The Tigers opened the season with a neutral site, non-conference contest against Northwest Missouri State. The Bearcats scored two runs on an error in the eighth inning that proved to be the difference, winning 4-2. Fort Hays State was limited to just three hits in the game.

Alex Ruxlow got the start on the bump for the Tigers, tossing four effective innings but picking up the loss. The junior gave up a pair of runs on six hits, striking out one while stranding five runners on base. Trevor Hughes scored both runs for the Tigers, crossing the plate in the second after drawing a leadoff walk and crushing the first FHSU home run of the season in the ninth inning. Sam Capps tossed 3.2 innings out of the bullpen, giving up two unearned runs while striking out four batters and allowing four baserunners (three walks, one hit).

Northwest got on the board first, taking advantage of a leadoff double in the bottom of the first. The Bearcat cleanup hitter singled to center to score the run, but was gunned down by Jake Lanferman after trying to stretch the hit into a double.

The Tigers answered quickly, tying the score in the next half inning. Hughes worked a walk to open the inning and moved up to second after Lanferman reached on an error. Clayton Basgall drew another walk to load up the bases with one out for Jace Bowman. The senior drilled a single to center, driving in Hughes and knotting up the score at one. Bearcat pitcher worked out of the bases loaded jam by striking out the next two batters, two of his 12 strikeouts on the day.

The Bearcats jumped back in front in the fourth inning via back-to-back singles and a Tiger error in the outfield. Ruxlow later loaded the bases with two outs, but limited the damage to one run by inducing a groundout to second.

Capps came in to pitch in the fifth inning, allowing just two baserunners in his first three innings, both on walks. Northwest finally broke through against the junior in the eighth inning when a pair of runs scored on an error. Austin Weiser came on to patch things up for FHSU, forcing a harmless pop up to the catcher to get out of the inning.

Hughes opened the ninth inning with a home run against the Bearcat closer, helping the Tigers claw within 4-2. However, that was the end of the threat with the next three batters going down in order.

Northwestern Oklahoma State 4, Fort Hays State 2
Fort Hays State struggled to get the bats going once again in the nightcap, falling to the Rangers 4-2 on just three hits. The Tigers had their chances against Ranger starter Tomlin Bryce, but they stranded a runner at second three times in the first six innings. Once NWOSU went to the bullpen in the eighth, the Tigers put together a rally to close within one run, but the run was stopped short.

Ben Ramberg started game two for the Tigers, picking up the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits and two walks in 5.2 innings of work. Ryan Ruder made his collegiate debut out of the bullpen, giving up one run on three hits while tossing 1.2 innings. Jace Bowman reached base twice, scoring one run while also stealing a base. Ty Redington scored the other Tiger run after drawing a pair of walks and swiping one bag. Nick Hammeke and Jake Lanferman both drove in one run in the Tiger rally in the eighth inning.

The Rangers broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the third after a pair of singles put runners on with one out. TJ Kassner then drove a triple to left field, scoring a run before the trail runner was gunned down at home plate.

Northwestern Oklahoma State extended its lead in the sixth after Ramberg issued a pair of one-out walks. The ensuing batter knocked a double to left, driving in one run and putting two runners in scoring position. The runner at third scored on a wild pitch two batters later, stretching the lead to 3-0.

After Bryce gave up just one hit and four baserunners over seven innings of work, NWOSU went to the pen to start the eighth. The Tigers immediately capitalized, loading the bases on singles from Bowman and Jared Bogosian and a walk to Redington. Hammeke drove in a run on a fielder’s choice after another pitching change, sending a sharp grounder to third. Hammeke and Redington advanced on a wild pitch before Lanferman closed the gap to 3-2 with an RBI groundout. With the tying run on third, Ranger reliever David Sanchez recorded a strikeout to escape the jam.

The Rangers got one run back right away, stringing together two singles with the help of an FHSU error. Sanchez put down the Tigers in order in the ninth to earn the save.

The Tigers will wrap up the opening weekend with a 3 p.m. contest against Northwestern Oklahoma State Saturday (Feb. 4) before returning home to play New Mexico Highlands in their home opener next weekend, February 10-12.

No. 16 Tigers wrestling rolls over Mules

HAYS, Kan. – The 16th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team turned in an outstanding performance for Senior Night on Thursday. The Tigers improved to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA with a 37-9 thrashing of Central Missouri. The Mules dropped to 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

The Tigers got an easy 6-0 lead thanks to Central Missouri leaving the 125-pound weight class open. The Mules managed to cut the lead in half with a very close 5-4 decision at 133 pounds before senior Anthony Calderon extended the Tiger lead to 9-3 with an 11-9 decision in a fantastic comeback effort at 141 pounds over Daide Agnew.

Another senior, Jacob Kay, extended the Tiger lead by four as he managed to handle Zachary Schriddle with a 12-3 decision.

Leading 13-3, redshirt-freshman Greg Tooley took to the mat for the Tigers at 157 pounds. Tooley wasted no time in picking up his 18th win of the year picking up six points for FHSU with a pin of Zane Heiter just 2:46 into the match.

Central Missouri scored its final six points of the match in the 165-pound match with a fall. At 174 pounds, Micquille Robinson once again extended the Tiger lead thanks to a late takedown in the third period to earn a 3-2 decision.

After another void at 184 pounds by Central Missouri extended the lead to 26-9, senior Jon Inman hit the mat for FHSU in the 197-pound bout. Inman, the No. 2 ranked wrestler at 197 pounds, picked up a fall 58 seconds into the second period to move to 19-0 on the season.

In the final bout of night Christian Lance, the No. 9 wrestler at 285 pounds, picked up a 3-2 decision with another late takedown. Lance improved on his team-leading 36 wins and sealed the match for the Tigers by the score of 37-9.

Next up for the Tigers is a trip to Edmond, Okla. as they take on No. 7 ranked Central Oklahoma on Sunday. The wrestling is set to begin at 2 pm.

The three FHSU senior wrestlers honored on the night were Calderon, Kay and Inman, who all wrestled in their final home event at Gross Memorial Coliseum

Jackson leads Kansas to win over Baylor

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Josh Jackson had 23 points and 10 rebounds, then helped third-ranked Kansas prevent No. 2 Baylor from getting off a potential tying shot in the closing seconds of the Jayhawks’ 73-68 victory Wednesday night.

Frank Mason III added 19 points, including two free throws to seal the win, and Devonte Graham scored 13 as the Jayhawks (20-2, 8-1) pulled a game ahead of the Bears (20-2, 7-2) in the Big 12 race.

It was nip-and-tuck almost the entire way.

The game was tied 64-all with 2:23 left when Jackson went baseline for a dunk. After Mason made a couple of foul shots moments later, the teams began trading baskets down the stretch.

Davis’ 42 points lead Tigers to win at Emporia State

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

EMPORIA, Kan. – Rob Davis scored a career-high 42 points and Fort Hays State scored the final six points to beat Emporia State 76-71 for their fifth straight win at White Auditorium. Davis, who is the first Tiger to score 40 in a game since Dennis Edwards in 1995, hit 14 of his 20 shots and was 7-for-12 from beyond the arc.

Mark Johnson Postgame Interview

Game Highlights

Fort Hays State (12-8, 6-6 MIAA) led by three at halftime, but the Hornets (10-11, 6-5 MIAA) battled back to take a four-point lead midway through the second half and were up 71-70 with 2:20 to play.

Hadley Gillum hit two free throws with 50 seconds left to give FHSU the lead for good.
