By: GARRETT SAGER

Highlights

Hays High and Dodge City kept things close for the large portion of the first quarter of play. TMP controlled the second half.  The Lady Monarchs led 42-33 after the third quarter and cruised to the 60-41 win. TMP’s defensive pressure proved to much for the Cowgirls who dropped to 8-5 on the season.  TMP has won 11 straight and improve to 13-1 on the season.  The Lady Monarchs are off until next Friday when they will host Norton.

FHSU softball picked ninth in MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Softball has been picked ninth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, released on Friday (Jan. 27). The Tigers are coming off a seventh place finish in the conference in 2016 and enter their third year under head coach Adrian Pilkington.

The Tigers are very young this year with just three seniors on the roster, which includes Kylie Strand, Claudia Vazquez and Ashley Beavers. Strand has the most experience of any player on the team at FHSU, now in her fourth year with the program. Vazquez and Beavers both transferred in last year. Nine of the 14 on the roster are newcomers this year, which includes seven freshmen and two junior transfers. Juniors Veronica Knittig and Carrie Clarke are the only other two with experience in an FHSU uniform beyond the three seniors.

Finding cohesiveness early in the season will be key to the team’s success with so many new faces. The Tigers are coming off a 21-30 season in 2016, which saw the team reach .500 just once early in the season at 6-6. Following that, the Tigers were never able to push their record north of the break-even mark, but they did finish the year strong by winning eight of their last 10 regular season games.

Fort Hays State lost its top seven hitters by batting average from last year, making Strand the top offensive returner. She hit .219 with four home runs, eight doubles, 25 RBI, and 20 runs scored. Vazquez was right behind in average at .212, adding five extra-base hits, 20 RBI, and 21 runs scored. Beavers was used mainly for defense and pinch running purposes in 2016.

Clarke is the only pitcher to return after going 5-11 with a 5.66 ERA in 118.2 innings pitched last year. Lexie Kimminau and Hailey Chapman are freshmen looking to make an immediate impact in the circle.

The Tigers open their season in Texas on Friday, February 10. They play five games at the West Texas Invitational in Canyon, Texas to kick off the season. They will be at home for the first time on February 22.

Hays’ comeback falls short versus Valley Center

Dustin Armbruster

Hays High entered the Mid-America Classic in McPherson winners of their last two games to push their record to 6-3. Their opponent in the first round, Valley Center, also entered with the same 6-3 mark. The two met up as the five seed (Hays) and the four seed (Valley Center). The Indians and Hornets met four times previously in the tournament with Valley Center holding a 3-1 advantage.

In the first quarter Valley Center scored in all the ways they had not on the season. Hitting three of five three point attempts and making all three free throws. Hays held a brief 6-5 lead then Valley Center went on a 12-0 run to establish their first double digit lead of the game at 17-6. Hays trailed by as many as 13 several times in the second quarter. The Indians cut the lead down to nine but missed a three at 28-19 that would have made the game a two possession contest. Hays scored the final three points of the half to cut their half time deficit to ten at 32-22.

Highlights

Savannah Schneider scored five consecutive points with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter to get Hays back within five at 38-33, but Valley Center scored the final basket of the quarter to lead 40-33. After trailing 38-28 Hays went on a 14-4 run to close the gap down to two points at 44-42 with 1:53 remaining. That would be the closest the Indians would get. Hays missed their next two shots down 45-42, including a three pointer that would have tied the game. Valley Center hit five of their final nine free throws to win 49-42.

Coach Kirk Maska

Hays falls to 6-4 on the season and will play in the consolation semi-finals at 3:00. Valley Center improves to 7-3. Savannah Schneider led the Indians with 11.

Iowa State beats K-State after blowing 20-point lead

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Senior Matt Thomas scored a career-high 25 points and Iowa State held off a furious Kansas State rally to win 70-65 on Tuesday night for its fourth victory in six games.

Naz Mitrou-Long had 13 and Monte Morris scored 12 for the Cyclones (13-6, 5-3 Big 12), who blew a 46-26 lead but survived after Mitrou-Long’s steal and free throws with 21 seconds left.

Thomas, who entered averaging 11 points per outing, scored 20 points in a blistering first half as Iowa State jumped ahead 43-26. Thomas opened the second half with a 3-pointer to make it a 20-point game.

It seemed over – until K-State (15-5, 4-4) answered with a stunning 32-11 run that gave it a 58-57 lead with just over five minutes left.

Morris scored on back-to-back possessions to give Iowa State the lead back, and Deonte Burton’s layup with 39 seconds to go gave the Cyclones a cushion that proved crucial in the closing moments.

Wesley Iwundu had 15 points for the Wildcats. Their three road losses in the Big 12 have come by a total of eight points.

Willis’ layup put the Shockers up for good, 10-8, and sparked a 13-2 run capped by Rauno Nurger’s 3-pointer. Zach Brown’s free throw capped a 17-4 run and Wichita State led 39-22 at halftime after shooting 53.8 percent from the floor.

Wichita State opened the second half with an 11-2 run for a 24-point lead and led by 42 with 2:49 left.
