MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) – Esa Ahmad broke out of a shooting slump with a career-high 27 points to lead No. 18 West Virginia to an 85-69 victory over No. 2 Kansas on Tuesday night.

KSHSAA Executive Director Gary Musselman announces retirement in July, 2018

Gary Musselman
Gary Musselman

TOPEKA, Kan. – The KSHSAA Executive Board met for their regularly scheduled meeting on January 11 where KSHSAA Executive Director Gary Musselman announced his plans to retire in July of 2018.

“I have been carefully considering my retirement decision like everyone must at some point.  A significant part of that deliberation is based on what is in the best interests of the KSHSAA and its’ member schools.  Stepping down at the end of next school year gives our Executive Board time to take the steps they need to identify an Executive Director-Elect.  I am committed to working with my successor to ensure a successful transition.”

Musselman joined the KSHSAA as an Assistant Executive Director in 1988 and served in that capacity until he was selected to serve as Executive Director-Elect in 1995.   Musselman began his duties as Executive Director in the 1996-97 school year.   “The conclusion of the 2017-18 school year will mark my 30th year serving on the KSHSAA staff and my 43rd year as a Kansas educator.   It has been a privilege to serve the students and schools of Kansas.”  Musselman is the sixth Executive Director in the history of the KSHSAA, following Kaye Pearce (1993-1996), Nelson Hartman (1976-1993), Brice Durbin (1962-1976), Carl Kopelk (1957-1962) and E.A. Thomas (1927-1957).

“In my youth and early career as a teacher and coach, I knew little about the KSHSAA, and certainly would never have envisioned the opportunity to serve as Executive Director.  During my twenty-nine years I have learned and benefitted tremendously from working with colleagues across the state and throughout the nation.  My decision to set a retirement date is not based on health nor problems of any kind.   It is simply time to put my family first and allow myself time to enjoy another phase of life while I have the health and time to do so,” said Musselman.  “I am honored to have had the opportunity to serve Kansas schools and students for 30 years.”

Musselman’s career with the KSHSAA reflects numerous enhancements to programs, services and student participation.  In 2002, the KSHSAA opened its new headquarters office building, and in 1997 Kansas became only the second state in the nation to implement a student advisory committee to provide input to the Association.  Musselman also introduced strategic planning to the KSHSAA.  Service award programs recognizing officials were implemented and recognition awards for coaches, sponsors, directors and administrators were expanded.   Boys and girls bowling championships were created along with a new cheerleading competition slated for the fall of 2017, known as Gameday.  Under Musselman’s guidance numerous changes to postseason playoff formats have been instituted and educational requirements for coaches and athletic administrators have been elevated.  In recent years, the KSHSAA has established a standing sports medicine advisory committee and has imposed educational requirements promoting awareness of health and safety issues in all of its sports for students, parents, coaches and administrators.

Throughout his career, Musselman has been active at the national level.   He currently serves as a Board of Director member and President of the (NFHS) National Federation of State High School Associations which includes all 51 state high school associations.   In 2015, Musselman completed a six year term on the Board of Directors of the NFHS Foundation and served as Chair of that body in his final year.  He served on three NFHS Strategic Planning Committees, the Appeals Committee, the Football Rules Committee and chaired the Sportsmanship/Wellness Committee.  In addition, Musselman was a frequent presenter at NFHS national meetings and conferences and presented for the U.S. Olympic Committee on coaching education programs in Colorado Springs.

“The KSHSAA is viewed nationally as an outstanding state association and Mr. Musselman deserves credit for maintaining and advancing the quality of programs, services and stature of the Association, said KSHSAA President, Juan Perez, Principal of Kepley Middle School in Ulysses.  “Gary has guided the KSHSAA through many challenging issues during his tenure with integrity, professionalism and humility while working to implement positive changes in our athletic and activity programs.  We are sad to see his tenure come to an end, but he will always be an important part of the legacy of the KSHSAA and the KSHSAA family.”

A native of Ness City, Kansas, Musselman graduated from Ness City High School and earned his undergraduate degree in secondary education from Kansas State University with honors.  Following teaching and coaching stints in Independence, Andover, Beloit and Halstead, Musselman completed his Master’s degree in secondary school administration from Wichita State University with honors and joined the staff of the KSHSAA in 1988 after serving as Principal of LaCrosse High School.

The KSHSAA Executive Board announced that a timeline and process for determining Musselman’s successor will be released in the near future.

Inman named MIAA Co-Wrestler of the Week

FHSU Sports Information
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State senior Jon Inman was named MIAA Co-Wrestler of the Week on Monday (Jan. 23) for his efforts this past week at the Kansas Cup. Inman went 3-0 on the way to his second straight individual title in the Kansas Cup. He shares the honor this week with Kevin Barrett of Nebraska-Kearney.

Inman, ranked No. 2 in the nation at 197 pounds, pinned all three of his opponents. He remained undefeated on the year, now 17-0. It was his first wrestling action since December 3. He defeated Chance Shull of Northwest Technical College in 2:13, then defeated Ethan Dean of Barton Community College in 1:40. In the finals, he defeated Dalton Weidl of Newman in a time of 3:35. Inman was one of four Tigers to claim individual titles, helping the team to its fourth consecutive Kansas Cup title.

Ranked fourth nationally at heavyweight, Barrett has now won six matches in a row after a 5-2 decision at Newman and a 1:06 fall of 2nd-ranked Caleb Cotter of UCO. Barrett, a 2012 All-American, is now 23-4 with 12 falls on the year.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State, ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division II, claimed the Kansas Cup for the fourth year in a row on Sunday (Jan. 22). As a team the Tigers produced 158 points, 45.5 more than second-place Newman University (112.5) and 51.5 more than third-place Barton (Kan.) Community College.

In the individual standings the Tigers pushed seven of their ten wrestlers into the finals and all ten placed. Claiming individual titles for FHSU were No. 10 ranked Brandon Ball (141), Greg Tooley (157), Rakim Dean (184) and No. 2 ranked Jon Inman (197). Finishing runner-up were Conrad Cole (125), Matt Mejia (133) and No. 9 ranked Christian Lance (285). Also placing for the Tigers were Jacob Kay (149) who took sixth, Kalin Collins (165) who finished third, and Micquille Robinson (174) who took fifth.

The redshirt-freshman Ball continued to stay hot for the Tigers and showed why he is one of the top wrestlers at 141 pounds this year with a 3-0 day. After a bye in the first round, Ball went on to pin his next opponent and then record a technical fall to punch his ticket to the finals. There he met with Colby (Kan.) Community College’s Chris Deters, whom he got the better of in a 13-1 major decision. Ball moved to 26-4 overall, claiming his first Kansas Cup crown.

Tooley improved to 16-2 overall after going 4-0 on the way to his first Kansas Cup title. He did it in pure dominance as all four of his wins came via technical falls including a 21-6 performance over Kansas Wesleyan’s Ty Wilson in the finals.

Dean, like Ball, went 3-0 on his way to victory at 184 pounds and improved his record to 22-11 this season. He started the day off with a technical fall then followed that with a pin in the semifinals. In the finals Dean took full control over Labette (Kan.) Community College’s Tristan Ramberg and walked away with a 12-1 major decision.

In his first time wrestling since December 3, Inman reminded the wrestling world why he is considered the No. 2 wrestler at 197 pounds as he picked up his second consecutive title at the Kansas Cup. Inman started the day with back-to-back pins, in the quarterfinals and semifinals, to find himself facing off with MIAA foe Dalton Weidl of Newman in the finals. After surrendering an early takedown, Inman got it going and earn his third pin of the day 35 seconds into the second period.

The freshman Cole found himself in the finals after a pin and major decision in the first two rounds. Waiting for him was the No. 1 seed in the 125-pound bracket, Newman’s Dustin Reed. Cole fought hard for the first four minutes but a wrong turn found him on his back and a pin was awarded to Reed at the 4:07 mark.

Another freshman, Meija was on fire out of the gate pinning his first two opponents in a combined time of 2:09. From there he punched his ticket to the finals with a technical fall. In the finals, Mejia battled hard with Colby Community College’s Otis Rollins and almost had a late escape in the third to tie the match, but fell just short in a 10-9 decision.

Lance, who is the team leader in wins this season increased his record to 34-4 on the season with his 3-1 second place finish. The ninth-ranked wrestler at 285 pounds started quickly with a pin in the first round and back-to-back major decisions in the following two. In the finals he met Northwest Kansas Tech’s Odgerek Batkhishig. Batkhishig was keeping his distance from Lance the entire match and chose to take his shots wisely and managed to pick up the 8-6 decision.

Overall Inman led the Tigers on scoring with 20.0 team points, followed closely by Ball who had 19.5. Tooley, Dean, Mejia and Cole all generated 18.5.

The Tigers get back into dual action when they head to Wichita to take on Newman on Wednesday (Jan. 25). The wrestling is scheduled to begin at 7 pm.

Royals’ Ventura killed in car crash in Dominican Republic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura, whose electric arm helped his team win the 2015 World Series title, was killed in a car crash in his native Dominican Republic early Sunday.

Royals vice president Mike Swanson confirmed Ventura’s death. He was 25.

With the fitting nickname of “Ace,” Ventura burst onto the baseball scene with a 100 mph fastball and an explosive attitude to match. He was a fierce competitor who was always willing to challenge hitters inside, then deal with the ramifications when they decided to charge the mound.

Ventura went 14-10 with a 3.20 ERA in 2014, his first full season in the big leagues, and helped the long-downtrodden Royals reach the World Series for the first time since 1985. He proceeded to dominate San Francisco in both of his starts, though the Royals would ultimately lose in seven games.

He followed by helping Kansas City win the championship the next year.
