Morris with career-highs, leads Wichita St. over Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – Shaquille Morris matched a career-high with 17 points and grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds, and Wichita State beat Evansville 82-65 on Tuesday night.

Wichita State (16-4, 6-1 Missouri Valley) bounced back from a 76-62 loss to conference-leader Illinois State on Saturday that snapped a six-game winning streak. Evansville (10-10, 1-6) has lost six of seven.

The Purple Aces led 46-42 with 13 minutes left. Conner Frankamp then made consecutive 3-pointers, sparking a 29-11 run and the Shockers led 71-57 with about four minutes left. Frankamp added another 3 and finished with nine points, and Morris had six points, including a dunk, during the stretch.

Frankamp was 4 of 4 from long range and had 14 points. Landry Shamet and Darral Willis Jr. added 11 points apiece for the Shockers, who shot 51 percent from the field.

Jaylon Brown scored 28 points and made four 3-pointers to lead Evansville. Ryan Taylor added 17 points.

Boys: TMP 59, Hill City 53

HAYS, Kan-The TMP Lady Monarchs matched up with Smith Center for a second consecutive game on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the Mid Continent League Tournament.  TMP took control of the game early with a 17-2 first quarter with all 17 of those coming from Madyson Koerner who wouldn’t score the rest of the game.  The second quarter wasn’t much better for the Lady Red as TMP outscored them 18-8 to take a 35-10 lead at halftime.

TMP pushed their lead to 55-17 after three quarters and cruised to the 57-25 win with a running clock in the fourth quarter. TMP improves to 10-1 on the season and face Hill City in the semi-finals on Friday in WaKeeney. The Ringnecks were 43-33 winners over Norton.

HILL CITY, Kan-It was quite a battle in Hill City on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the MCL Tournament.  TMP started the game on a 4-0 run and the Ringnecks answered with a quick 9-0 run to take the lead.  TMP would answer and take a 14-13 lead after the first quarter.

The Monarchs would extend their lead to as many as five points in the second quarter when Hill City answered again and close the gap to a single pint a couple of times.  TMP would use some timely shooting from Ryan Karlin who scored 8 first half points.  That helped the Monarchs to a 27-23 lead at the break.

TMP would extend their lead to eight points in the third quarter and settled for a 44-37 lead after three quarters. Hill City would cut the TMP lead to one twice in the fourth quarter but TMP would score the final five points of the contest from the free throw line and picked up the 59-53 victory.  The win is the third in a row for a Monarch team that improves to 7-4 on the season and will play in the championship semi-finals on Friday in WaKeeney.

No. 2 Kansas beats Iowa State for 17th straight win

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Frank Mason III had 16 points, Landen Lucas scored 14 and No. 2 Kansas held off Iowa State 76-72 on Monday night for its 17th straight win.

Svi Mykhailiuk added 13 for the Jayhawks (17-1, 6-0 Big 12), who snapped a two-game skid in Ames and opened 6-0 in the Big 12 for the 10th time.

Though it was never comfortable for Kansas, the Jayhawks led the entire second half. Iowa State star Monte Morris drilled a long 3 and two free throws to make it 75-72 with 14.6 seconds left. But then Devonte Graham’s free throw made it a two-possession game and Morris missed a 3 that would’ve made for an interesting finish.

Morris scored 23 points with seven rebounds and seven assists for the Cyclones (11-6, 3-3), who saw their recent string of success against the Jayhawks come to an end.

Chiefs’ Andy Reid believes holding should have been no-call

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid doesn’t believe the holding penalty on left tackle Eric Fisher that cost Kansas City a tying 2-point conversion against Pittsburgh on Sunday night should have been called.

After watching film of the decisive play in the Steelers’ 18-16 playoff victory, Reid said Monday that “I don’t want to be fined any money, but I’d lean a different way.”

Fisher appeared to hook Steelers pass rusher James Harrison on the conversion attempt with less than 3 minutes left in the game.

But the play was not cut-and-dried: Harrison dipped especially low and may have been losing his balance, and he likely would not have gotten to the quarterback anyway.

Still, the flag negated the successful 2-point conversion. And when the Chiefs tried again from the 12-yard line, Alex Smith’s throw fell incomplete and the Steelers were able to run out the clock.

Steelers hold off Chiefs in AFC Divisional Playoff

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to get a rematch with the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game.

Chris Boswell set an NFL record with six field goals, Le’Veon Bell broke his own franchise playoff record by running for 170 yards as the Steelers advanced to the AFC title game for the first time since the 2010 season.

The Patriots beat the Steelers 27-16 on Oct. 23. Pittsburgh played without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who was out with a knee injury.

The Steelers have won nine straight games.

Alex Smith threw for 172 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Spencer Ware ran for a 1-yard score with 2:43 remaining to get the Chiefs within two points. They converted a two-point conversion but it was called by due to a holding penalty on left tackle Eric Fisher. The ensuing pass fell incomplete and Pittsburgh ran out the clock.

Kansas City remains winless at home in the playoffs since the 1993 postseason.

Illinois State pulls away for win over Wichita State

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — MiKyle McIntosh scored 20 points, Deontae Hawkins added 14 more and Illinois State took sole possession of first place in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 76-62 win over Wichita State on Saturday night.

Illinois State (14-4, 6-0) got a layup from DJ Clayton with just over five minutes left in the first half to spark a 12-3 run that gave the Redbirds a 36-27 halftime advantage and the lead for good.

Clayton finished with 11 points, while Evans and Paris Lee had 10 points apiece for the Redbirds, who shot 54 percent from the field.

Wichita State (15-4, 5-1) cut the deficit to a single point in the second half with a 3-pointer from Brown that made it 43-42 before the Redbirds pulled away again with an 11-2 run and held on down the stretch.

Landry Shamet and Darral Willis Jr. led Wichita State with 14 points each.
