Tiger wrestling goes 2-2 at Midwest Duals

KEARNEY, Neb. – The 18th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team moved to 3-4 overall on the season after going 2-2 on Saturday at the Midwest Duals, hosted by Nebraska-Kearney. The Tigers dropped their first match to Colorado Mesa by the score of 31-11, but bounced back with consecutive wins over Western State and New Mexico Highlands by the scores of 24-15 and 31-10 respectively. In the final match of the day the Tigers dropped the dual with Chadron State 32-10.

Box Scores
Colorado Mesa 31, Fort Hays State 11
Fort Hays State 24, Western State 15
Fort Hays State 31, New Mexico Highlands 10
Chadron State 32, Fort Hays State 10

The No. 9 ranked wrestler at 285 pounds, Christian Lance, was the best performer for the Tigers on the mat, the only FHSU wrestler to go undefeated on the day. With the four wins, Lance has now hit 30 wins for the season as he is sporting a 30-3 record on the year.

Brandon Ball was another Tiger that performed well on the mat for the FHSU at 141 pounds. The 7th-ranked Ball went 3-1 on the day dropping his only match in the opening dual to Colorado Mesa’s Daniel Salazar. Salazar was the 12th-ranked wrestler in the nation coming into the event.

Greg Tooley also went 3-1 on the day and won his final three matches, pushing his record to 13-2 on the year. Tooley dropped his first match of the day to Payton Tawter, the No. 9 wrestler in the nation, before responding with three straight major decisions for the Tigers.

Josh Martinez (133), Micquille Robinson (174) and Rakim Dean (184) each added two wins on the day for the Tigers, while Jacob Kay (149), Kyler Mick (165) and Austin Brandt (197) each picked up a win. The Tigers get back to action on Sunday (Jan. 22) when they host the Kansas Cup, looking for a four-peat in the event.

Kansas State falls to top-ranked Baylor

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Manu Lecomte scored 26 points after battling early foul trouble, Ish Wainright and Al Freeman had key baskets down the stretch and top-ranked Baylor outlasted No. 25 Kansas State 77-68 on Saturday.

Wainright and Freeman had 15 points apiece for the Bears (15-1, 3-1 Big 12), who bounced back from a lopsided loss at No. 10 West Virginia in their first game as the nation’s No. 1 team to deal the Wildcats (13-4, 2-3) another close, disheartening conference defeat.

Johnathan Motley was held to seven points and nine rebounds before fouling out with 4:34 left and the Bears leading 62-55. But they managed to hang on down the stretch without their most dependable player.

D.J. Johnson scored 20 points for Kansas State, including two free throws that got the Wildcats within five with just over four minutes to go. But the Wildcats were unable to make key stops the rest of the way, and the trio of Wainwright, Freeman and Lecomte seemed to will the Bears to victory.

Freeman scored with just over three minutes left to make it 66-58, and Wainwright threw down a putback with about two minutes remaining that gave the Bears a 68-60 advantage.

Kamau Stokes made a pair of foul shots moments later to give Kansas State a chance, but Lecomte’s floater made it 70-62 with 1:35 left, and the Bears held on from there.

Barry Brown finished with 13 points, Xavier Sneed added 12 and Stokes had 10 for the Wildcats, while Dean Wade was held to five points and two rebounds in 35 minutes.

BIG PICTURE

Baylor answered a lot of critics after its ugly showing in Morgantown by beating the Wildcats on the road. The Bears have won six of their last seven against Kansas State.

Kansas State has lost three of its last four games, including a last-second loss at No. 2 Kansas and a loss at Texas Tech where the Wildcats also led late. Those defeats coupled with a weak nonconference schedule could haunt the Wildcats when the NCAA Tournament field is set.

No. 2 Kansas tops pesky Oklahoma State

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Frank Mason III scored 22 points, freshman Josh Jackson added 20 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 2 Kansas held off Oklahoma State 87-80 on Saturday.

The Jayhawks (16-1, 5-0 Big 12) rallied for their 16th straight win and could move into the top spot when the AP poll comes out on Monday. No. 1 Baylor lost 89-68 to West Virginia on Tuesday.

Devonte’ Graham scored 21 points for Kansas, and Svi Mykhailiuk had 14. Landen Lucas added seven points and 12 rebounds.

The Jayhawks grabbed their first lead when Graham burst down the lane for a layup with 14:10 left. Graham also had a key three-pointer and Mason got loose in transition to help Kansas to the tight victory.

Jeffrey Carroll scored 23 for Oklahoma State (10-7, 0-5), and Mitchell Soloman had 16 points. Jawun Evans finished with 15.

The Cowboys got off to a nice start, holding the Jayhawks to 10 points in the first 12 minutes. Oklahoma State ran out to an 11-point lead over that same span, aided by early buckets from Evans and Carroll.

BIG PICTURE

Kansas remains the lone undefeated team in Big 12 play, but a difficult stretch is looming at the end of the month. The Jayhawks visit West Virginia and Kentucky and host Baylor over a span of nine days. If the Jayhawks want to keep their hopes alive for their 13th straight Big 12 title, they’ll have to find a way to give their starters adequate rest.

UP NEXT

Kansas travels to Ames, Iowa to take on the Iowa State on Monday.

Still in search of its first Big 12 win, Oklahoma State hosts No. 25 Kansas State on Wednesday.

Hays sweeps Garden City for a second time

Dustin Armbruster

The Hays High Indians continued their way through the Western Athletic Conference on Friday night hosting Garden City. The two teams played to open the season at the Hays City Shootout with the Indians winning both games.

Girls
Hays 50 – Garden City 35

Hays never trailed in the first half, using runs of 14-3 and 12-3 to build their lead as high as 14 points before half time. Garden City scored seven straight to end the first quarter to make the score 19-14, but that was as close as the Buffaloes would get for the rest of the half. The Indians held Garden City without a point until the 2:50 mark of the second quarter. Hays went to the locker room with a 33-22 lead at halftime.

Highlights

Garden City cut the Hays lead down to eight at 37-29 before Hays responded with a 9-2 run to push their lead up to 15 at the end of the third quarter 46-31. Each team scored four points in the fourth quarter with Hays High playing keep away for much of the eight minutes to walk away with a 50-35 victory. It was a similar score the first time the two teams met up with Hays winning 52-34.

Coach Kirk Maska

Hays was led by Savannah Schneider who scored 22 and was the only Indian in double figures. Hays improves to 5-3 and snaps a two game skid. The Indians are 1-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. Garden City falls to 3-7 and 0-3. The Buffaloes were led by the 12 points of Kyra Bellows.

Hays will be at home on Tuesday to play Dodge City. The games will feature only the girls teams as the Hays boys head to the Orange and Black Classic in Colby later in the week.

Boys
Hays 58 – Garden City 49

Hays raced out to a 11-2 lead over the first five minutes of the game before going cold and not scoring for the remainder of the first quarter. Garden City scored the final five points to tighten the game to 11-7 after one quarter. Garden City turned those final five points into a 13-2 run that gave the Buffaloes their first lead of the game at 15-13. The lead was short lived as Cole Murphy buried a three pointer five second later. Hays would trail again at 17-16 but end the first half on a 14-5 run building a 30-22 half time lead.

Highlights

Hays started the third quarter on a 11-0 run to grab control of the ball game. Garden City was held scoreless for the first 5:34 of the third quarter and didn’t hit a field goal until their was 3:55 left in the third. Hays took advantage to build their lead up to a game high 20 at 45-25. Like in the first half, Garden City wasn’t going away with out a fight. The Buffaloes went on a 13-3 run to get back into the game with less than four minutes remaining. Garden City twice cut the lead down to six, missing a three pointer on the second opportunity. Hays hit just enough free throws to keep Garden City at arms length, winning 58-49.

Coach Rick Keltner

Tyrese Hill was the only Indian in double figures scoring 18 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, both career highs. Overall the nine different Indians scored. Hays improves to 7-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. Garden City loses for the first time in 2017 and falls to 3-7 and 2-1 in conference play.

The Hays High boys are off until Thursday when they travel to Colby for the Orange and Black Classic to play Falcon, Colorado at 3:00 in Colby High School.

Steelers-Chiefs moved to primetime because of ice storm

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The AFC divisional playoff game Sunday between the Steelers and Chiefs has been moved from an early afternoon kickoff to primetime because of an ice storm due to hit the Kansas City area this weekend.

The game was originally scheduled to kickoff at 12:05 p.m. Central time. It will now start at 7:20 p.m. to give road crews and public safety officials more time to treat roads and parking lots.

The forecast calls for ice to move into the area Friday, and persistent cold temperatures throughout Saturday and Sunday. Additional precipitation is expected Sunday, though mostly in the form of rain.

The time change means the Packers-Cowboys game scheduled to kickoff at 3:40 p.m. Central time on Fox on Sunday will lead into the Steelers-Chiefs game, which will air on NBC.

Royals, Hosmer agree to $12.25M deal to avoid arbitration

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals and All-Star first baseman Eric Hosmer have agreed on a $12.25 million contract for next season, avoiding arbitration with a deal that could take him to free agency.

General manager Dayton Moore has long been optimistic that the Royals will be able to sign their homegrown star to a long-term deal, but the price has risen considerably.

The 27-year-old Hosmer made $8.3 million last season in the second year of a $13.9 million, two-year contract that he signed to avoid arbitration in 2015. He has won three Gold Gloves and flashed more power at the plate last season, hitting .266 with a career high 25 homers and 104 RBIs.

Hosmer is eligible for free agency after the season.

Left-hander Danny Duffy and closer Kelvin Herrera remained eligible for arbitration.

HAYS, Kan. – The 18th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team picked up its first dual win of the season on Thursday by winning the final three matches to force a 19-19 tie with Colorado School of Mines. The NCAA tiebreaker protocol was used and gave the Tigers the victory. Since FHSU had more 6-point wins in the match after the teams tied 5-5 in the matches won for the first criteria, the Tigers won on the second criteria.  With the win the Tigers now sit at 1-2 overall on the season, while the Orediggers moved to 2-2.

The Orediggers took an early 3-0 lead in a very close match in the 125-pound bout. It was a back-and-forth battle between Conrad Cole and Matthew Lavengood of CSM, a battle that Cole tied late in the third with an escape. Unfortunately, a riding time point was awarded to Lavengood, who walked away with the 8-7 decision.

Noah Au-Yeung extended the Oredigger lead to 8-0 in the ensuing 133-pound match after a technical fall, but the Tigers rebounded in the 141-pound bout cutting the lead to 8-3. Seventh-ranked Brandon Ball got the Tigers on the board as he handled Lukas Erickson with a 6-0 decision for his 20th victory of the season.

Colorado Mines extended its lead to eight once again after the No. 9 ranked wrestler in the nation, Jacob Gerken, avoided an upset with a tight 6-5 victory over Jacob Kay in the 149-pound bout. Then in the 157-pound bout, Greg Tooley picked up his tenth win of the season and trimmed the Oredigger lead back to five, 11-6, after an 8-4 decision over Ethan Ruby.

After a second technical fall for the Orediggers in the 165-pound bout and a decision in the 174-pound bout, the Tigers saw themselves trailing 19-6 with just three matches remaining. Rakim Dean did his part to keep the Tigers in the dual, cutting the lead to 19-9 with a 6-1 decision over Colorado Mines’ Benjamin Krantz at 184 pounds.

With the Tigers needing at least four points to stay, Austin Brandt stepped up for FHSU at 197 pounds. The freshman got the better of Anthony Spallino by 10 points (12-2), earning the major decision and cutting the lead to six with one match remaining.

With the Tigers needing a fall in the final match, they had the right man for the job in the likes of redshirt-freshman Christian Lance, the No. 9 ranked wrestler at 285 pounds. With 25 seconds remaining in the match and Lance up big, Jake Feldman of Colorado Mines was called for his fifth stall of the match. That disqualified Feldman and gave Lance a fall, producing just what the Tigers needed.

Oddly enough, that fall would prove to be the match decider in the tiebreaking protocol. Both teams won five matches in the dual, so the next criteria is which team has more 6-point wins in the match. FHSU had the only 6-point win, produced on the odd finish to the dual. A team point was added for FHSU, making the final score 20-19.
