Mason, Graham lead No. 3 Kansas past Texas Tech

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Frank Mason III scored 26 points, Devonte Graham added a season-high 20 and No. 3 Kansas used a big second-half run to put away Texas Tech, 85-68 on Saturday night.

Josh Jackson had 17 points and Mason provided the spark for a 12-0 run that turned a five-point game into a rout, allowing the Jayhawks to remain perfect in 17 tries against Texas Tech at home.

The Jayhawks (14-1, 3-0 Big 12) also pushed their home winning streak to a nation-leading 51 games.

Aaron Ross and Zach Smith had 17 points each as the Red Raiders (12-3, 1-2) lost their 15th straight to the Jayhawks overall. Keenan Evans scored 15.

Texas Tech gave Kansas a tussle until a frustrating final minute of the first half.

FHSU wrestling comes up short at Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo – The 18th-ranked Fort Hays State University Tigers moved to 0-2 this season on Saturday when they dropped a dual matchup with Adams State by a score of 28-14.

The Tigers fell behind 6-0 early after Kyler Mick was pinned by Issac Lopez just 36 seconds into the 165-pound bout. Adams State quickly increased its lead to 9-0 in the 174-pound bout after Koery Windham got the better of Micquille Robinson in a 7-1 decision. The Tigers once again came up short at 184 pounds when Richard Bencomo kept Rakim Dean at bay for the entire match, walking off the mat with a 4-0 decision.

At 197 pounds, freshman Austin Brandt cut the Grizzlies lead to 12-3 after picking up a 10-5 decision over Kahlil Gipson. The momentum stayed in FHSU’s favor with ninth-ranked Christian Lance heading into the 285-pound bout. Lance pulled off a third period take down and picked up his team-leading 26th win on the year with a 3-2 decision, trimming the deficit to 12-6.

After a pin by the Grizzlies at 125 pounds and a technical fall at 133 pounds pushed the score to 23-6, the No. 7 wrestler at 141 pounds Brandon Ball got the Tigers on the board once more.  Ball was in full control for the entirety of the match, earning a major decision over Sage Budd by a score of 10-2.

A technical fall by the Grizzlies in the 149 bout sent Greg Tooley to the mat for FHSU in the final match of the night. Despite the 28-10 deficit and a comeback out of reach, Tooley ended the match on a positive note for the Tigers with a 10-2 major decision of his own.

The Tigers will return to the mat in search of their first dual win of the season when they welcome Colorado School of Mines to Gross Memorial Coliseum on Thursday (Jan. 12). The first bout is set to start at 7 p.m.

Hays falls to Liberal in battle of state ranked teams

Dustin Armbruster

Hays High and Liberal had their games delayed by a day when mother nature dumped snow on southwest Kansas Thursday night and Friday morning.  The two met on Saturday with all four teams ranked.  The Liberal girls entered the game #10 in Class 5A while the Hays girls entered the rankings at #10 in 4A-I right before Christmas break.  The Liberal boys entered 2017

Girls
Liberal 59 – Hays 44

Liberal scored the first seven points of the game as Hays tried to knock the rust off after not playing since December 13th.  Liberal built their lead up to eight at 10-2 before the Indians answered back with eight straight over the final two minutes of the first quarter and first basket of the second quarter.  The lead changed hands nine times in the second quarter and tied six more times.  The teams entered the locker rooms at half time tied at 27 a piece.

Highlights

Hays took their biggest lead of the third quarter at 33-30 when Talyn Kleweno hit her first three pointer of the game.  Liberal outscored Hays 15-7 rest of the quarter to build their lead to 42-37.  Hays did not score in the fourth quarter until there was 2:22 left in the game.  During that time Liberal scored twelve points, building their lead to 54-37.  Hays would be outscored 32-17 in the second half, falling 59-44.

Coach Kirk Maska

Kallie Leiker led the Indians with 11 points.  Jaycee Dale and Talyn Kleweno each added 10.  Hays will be back on the road Tuesday to play conference leader Great Bend.  The Indians fall to 4-2 on the season and 0-1 in the WAC.  Liberal improves to 6-1 and 1-0.

Boys
Liberal 70 – Hays 42

Hays showed little rust out of the winter break taking an early 9-3 lead on three pointers by three different players in Liberal.  Hays built their lead up to seven at 14-7 with 1:30 left.  Hays would score just 11 points the remainder of the half.  Liberal went on a 22-2 run through the first four minutes of the second quarter.  The Redskins built the lead as high as 18 at 39-21 before Hays scored the final four points of the quarter to trail at halftime 39-25.

Highlights

Things got worse for Hays in the third quarter being outscored 23-7 after being outscored 23-9 in the second quarter.  Liberal pushed the lead as high has 32 at 62-30.  With Hays trailing 62-32 entering the fourth quarter, the clock ran continuous outside of time outs and Hays fell 70-42.

Coach Rick Keltner

Claiborne Kyles scored 14 for the Indians while Liberal put five in double figures.  Hays falls to 5-1 on the season and starts conference play at 0-1.  Liberal improves to 7-0 and 1-0.  Hays High is back on the road Tuesday in Great Bend.

Tigers fall on last second shot to Southwest Baptist

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

HAYS, Kan. – For the second time in three years, Southwest Baptist beats Fort Hays State on a last second shot at Gross Coliseum. Cartier Dean, who lead the Bearcats with 11 points, hit a 3-pointer from the right wing with less than one second to play in the 56-54 victory. Dean’s heroics came after Kyler Kinnamon hit a layup with 13 seconds left to put the Tigers up one. Kinnamon was fouled but missed the free throw which would have given them a two-point lead.

Mark Johnson Postgame Interview

Game Highlights

The Bearcats (9-5, 2-3 MIAA) opened the second half on a 14-0 run to go up 10, holding the Tigers (9-5, 3-3 MIAA) scoreless for the first 4:58. FHSU responded with an 11-0 run over the next 7:48 to retake the lead on a Rob Davis 3-pointer.

A Brady Werth basket with 5:08 to play pushed the Tigers lead to four at 47-43 but SBU answered with a 7-0 run to go up 50-47 with 1:30 to play. Trey O’Neil answered with a 3-pointer on the next possession to tie the game 50-50 with 1:17 to play.

Werth led the Tigers with a career-high 13 points along with eight rebounds and was the only Tiger to reach double-figures.

Rob Davis, who led the MIAA in scoring at 24.2 points per game coming into the contest, was held to eight on 3-of-12 shooting.

Longtime broadcaster named Covenant Builders Hometown Hero

tad-feltsTad Felts has been named the latest Covenant Builders Hometown Hero. He will be honored at Saturday’s Fort Hays State University basketball games.

The following is a tribute to Tad Felts written by Senator Jerry Moran on May 17th, 2016:

For more than 40 years, Tad Felts has been broadcasting high school athletics and reporting north-central Kansas news for KKAN-KQMA radio in Phillipsburg, but after several decades chronicling hundreds — or more likely thousands — of sporting events, Tad decided a couple years back it was time to watch a few more games from the bleachers rather than the press box. Now, this month, he will retire from radio altogether.

Tad first started his radio career in Garden City at KIUL as a high school sophomore in 1948, working after school and at night for free. During his time at KIUL, his main duties were cleaning the floors and playing records. While he was a student at Fort Hays State University in 1951, Tad worked at KAYS radio station in Hays and upon graduation at KLOE in Goodland. Tad found his eventual home with the team at KKAN-KQMA in Phillipsburg in 1972.

Given his decades of experience in broadcasting, Tad knows the business well and takes great joy in teaching others. Gerard Wellbrock, the sports director of KAYS radio in Hays and the voice of the Fort Hays State University Tigers said this about Tad: “He was a good mentor, I learned so much from him. The work ethic, how to deal with people, the relations you build with athletic directors and coaches. It’s hard not to like Tad. And you learned a lot about work, and life, just by being around him.”

In gyms across north-central Kansas, the KKAN-KQMA banner can be seen at high school basketball games, wrestling tournaments, and State championships. In fact, it is because of Tad’s dedication that the radio station is so often present. Families who can’t make the game in person, often because they are working long hours on the farm, especially appreciate local radio hosts being there because they can still catch the details of the game.

In rural America, entire communities revolve around how the high school sports team is doing. It is a common topic of conversation while standing in the checkout line at the grocery store or while dining at a neighborhood restaurant.

By no means is Tad a one-trick pony, though. Cherished equal to his sports reporting are his updates from the field during wheat harvest season, in which Tad will drive straight up to a farmer in his combine and record an interview from the cab. This is in addition to the full slate of city council and school board meetings, county fairs, and annual parades.

For years, Tad’s knowledge and sunny disposition has greeted folks tuning in to local radio. One former peer of Tad’s said this about the significant impact he has made: “KKAN-KQMA Radio has played an integral role in the lives of people in the Phillipsburg area, and Tad has always been a driving force behind that station’s programming and its scope of community service.” His professionalism was recognized by his peers when Tad was inducted into the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2010. Inductees to the hall of fame are selected based upon their contributions to the broadcasting profession, their broadcast career, and their recognition and awards received, and Tad is an extremely deserving recipient.

Today I want to express my gratitude to Tad Felts for helping to strengthen the close bonds of rural communities through his years of faithful service. I want to congratulate him on a job well done for the past nearly six decades. Tad’s been a tremendous friend to me over the years, and his work has served as a bedrock for many of the communities I grew up in and care deeply about.

Tad, I wish you all the best and thank you for everything you have done to improve the lives of so many in our great State.

Royals acquire right-hander Karns from Mariners for Dyson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals have acquired right-hander Nathan Karns from the Seattle Mariners for outfielder Jarrod Dyson, solidifying a pitching staff that lost workhorse Edinson Volquez to free agency.

The 29-year-old Karns was 6-2 with a 5.15 ERA in 15 starts and 22 appearances last season. He got off to a 5-1 start with a 3.43 ERA but struggled the rest of the season, and missed the final two months with a lower back strain.

Earlier Friday, the Mariners obtained right-hander Yovani Gallardo from Baltimore for outfielder Seth Smith.

Kansas City has been shopping the speedy Dyson much of the offseason, and he became more expendable following the trade of closer Wade Davis to the Chicago Cubs for young outfielder Jorge Soler.

Davis and Dyson are eligible for free agency after the season along with outfielder Lorenzo Cain, first baseman Eric Hosmer, third baseman Mike Moustakas, shortstop Alcides Escobar and left-hander Danny Duffy

Dyson hit .278 while serving in a platoon role last season. He also had 30 stolen bases.
