K-State beats Gardner-Webb, looks to conference play

MANHATTAN, Kansas — Kamau Stokes scored a season-high 18 points and Kansas State used an 18-1 late first-half run to defeat Gardner-Webb 67-54 on Wednesday night.

While Kansas State (11-1) was 5 of 7 from the field during that late first half stretch, Gardner-Webb (7-6) struggled from the field as they missed all 11 shot attempts in the final 7:02 of the first half.

Stokes and DJ Johnson were the only Wildcats to score in double figures on the night. Johnson scored 16 points and was a perfect 8 for 8 from the field in the victory.

Jamaal Robateau scored 17 points and Tyrell Nelson 14 to lead the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

Kansas’ Azubuike to miss rest of season with wrist injury

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas freshman center Udoka Azubuike will miss the rest of the season because of a left wrist injury.

Jayhawks coach Bill Self said Wednesday that Udoka tore ligaments to his wrist in practice Tuesday and will need surgery.

The 7-foot Azubuike, from Nigeria, averaged 5.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks this season.

“We all feel bad for Udoka,” Self said. “He has worked so hard and has put himself in a position to have a tremendous impact on this year’s squad. “This is a blow to our team but I know that we will rally around this and Udoka will work hard to insure a full recovery.”

No. 3 Kansas (10-1) is at UNLV on Thursday night.

Sie Doe, Jr. Earns All-America First-Team honors from the Associated Press

Sie Doe, Jr. added a third All-America First Team honor to his collection as the Associated Press named its Little All-America Team for the 2016 season. The team combines the top players from NCAA Divisions II and III and the NAIA.

Doe has already been tabbed as an All-America First Team selection by the AFCA and D2CCA. He was named D2CCA Super Region 3 Defensive Player of the Year and MIAA Defensive Player of the Year as well. He is just the third FHSU player in history to earn First Team honors from the AP, joining linebacker Brock Long from last year and quarterback Shawn Behr from 1995. Doe, however, is the first FHSU player in history to receive All-America First Team honors from at least three organizations in the same season.

Doe had 15 sacks, 19.5 tackles for loss, and 81 tackles for the season. He tied for second nationally in forced fumbles with five for the season. The 15 sacks for Doe set a new single-season school record, while he tied the FHSU career record of 21.5 also held by Trevell Smittick (1997-99). Over two years at FHSU, Doe amassed 151 tackles, 34.5 tackles for loss, 21.5 sacks, and eight forced fumbles. He was an All-MIAA selection both years.

Brady leads Patriots to win over Broncos

DENVER (AP) — Tom Brady overcame a slow start to lead the New England Patriots to a rare win in Denver on Sunday, a 16-3 grinder that dealt a crushing blow to the Broncos’ playoff hopes.

Brady missed his first six passes for just the second time his career — the first was way back on Oct. 12, 2003, against the Giants — but he came back to lead the Patriots (12-2) to a record eighth consecutive division title and a first-round bye.

Brady returned to the site of his worst beating, a 20-18 loss in the AFC championship 11 months ago when he was hit a career-high 23 times. This time, he brought a power run game and a much-improved O-line with him.

The result was just his third win in Denver in 10 tries, and it was the Broncos’ hopes of defending their Super Bowl title that took a beating.

The Broncos (8-6) lost for the third time in four games and were supplanted by the Dolphins for the sixth and final playoff spot in the AFC race with two weeks remaining.

Brady completed just half of his 32 passes for 188 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions for a passer rating of 68.2. That was actually worse that Broncos’ QB Trevor Siemian, who was 25 for 40 for 282 yards with an interception for a rating of 73.1.

Those numbers alone belied the Patriots’ all-around dominance of their nemesis.

Behind Dion Lewis’ 95-yard effort, New England outrushed Denver 136 yards to 58.

Brady’s first completion was a 17-yarder to Julian Edelman a minute into the second quarter, which ignited a touchdown drive that ended with LeGarrette Blount powering his way in from the one. That was his 15th rushing touchdown, which set a single-season franchise record and broke a 3-3 tie.

The Patriots put the ball on the ground twice on that drive. Brady was sack-stripped on the first snap with left guard Joe Thuney pouncing on the fumble, and Lewis recovered his own fumble at the Denver 1 just before Blount scored.

The Broncos outgained New England 146 yards to 39 in the first quarter, but Siemian made two bad decisions that thwarted promising drives.

His throw to Emmanuel Sanders from the New England 14 was both poorly timed and poorly placed. Cornerback Ryan Logan picked it off and returned it to midfield, setting up Blount’s TD run.

The Broncos reached the New England 31 on the ensuing drive but Siemian was pressured and instead of throwing the ball away dumped it off to running back Justin Forsett for a 6-yard loss that pushed Denver out of field goal range.

Denver trailed 10-3 at the half and had five consecutive three-and-outs before its initial first down, which came with about eight minutes left in the game on a drive that stalled at the New England 30, where the Broncos gave up the ball on downs.

That, and temperatures in the teens, sent the crowd streaming the exits.

PUNT RETURN PROBLEMS: Jordan Norwood, who’d been benched in favor of rookie speedster Kalif Raymond after two muffed punts in a loss against Kansas City last month, muffed his first chance Sunday when Raymond was a surprise scratch.

Norwood allowed Ryan Allen’s punt to go through his arms and legs, giving the ball to the Patriots at the Denver 21. That resulted in a 45-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski.

Norwood also fumbled away his only catch of the day, with 14 seconds left in the game.

SLOW DOWN: Brandon McManus’ 33-yard field goal accounted for Denver’s only points. They came in the first quarter, where the Broncos are the slowest starters in the NFL with just 26 points this season. But Denver limited the Patriots to just a field goal in the first quarter, and New England came in with a league-leading 103-point tally in the first 15 minutes of games.

INJURIES: Broncos TE Virgil Green left with a concussion in the first quarter and the Broncos announced early in the second half that DE Derek Wolfe was out with a neck injury. That left Denver with just four D-linemen to defend New England’s run game. Patriots DT Malcom Brown went out in the second quarter with a stomach issue.

Succop’s 53-yard field goal gives Titans win over KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ryan Succop kicked a 53-yard field goal into the wind as time expired Sunday to give the Tennessee Titans a 19-17 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on a frigid afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium.

Succop, who spent the first part of his career with Kansas City, came up short on his first try at the winner, but Chiefs coach Andy Reid had called a timeout just before the snap. Given a second chance, Succop knocked it thorugh with a couple of feet to spare as the Titans poured off the bench to celebrate.

The Titans’ rallied from a 17-7 hole, and Derrick Henry’s second touchdown got Tennessee (8-6) within 17-16 with just over three minutes left. But Titans coach Mike Mularkey went for the 2-point conversion and the lead. Marcus Mariota was pressured immediately and his pass never reached the end zone.

But the Chiefs (10-4), trying to clinch a playoff spot, were unable to pick up enough first downs to run out the clock and Tennessee got the ball back with a minute left. With no timeouts, Mariota calmly found Rishard Matthews for 19 yards and Delanie Walker twice to set up Succop’s field-goal attempt.

The dramatic late-game turn came after Tennessee squandered plenty of chances early in the game.

Matthews fumbled within sight of the goal line in the first half, ending the Titans’ streak of four straight games without a turnover. And Mariota, a Hawaii native, had plenty of trouble dealing with the cold weather, fumbling the ball away and throwing an interception to Ron Parker.

It was 1 degree at kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium, with a wind chill of minus-19, making it the coldest game in Kansas City since the franchise began keeping records in 1994.

Still, the Chiefs got off to a hot start in the cold weather when Tyreek Hill faked like he was running an option play and took an inside handoff instead, running untouched 68 yards for a first quarter touchdown.

It was the sixth touchdown for the dynamic rookie in the last four weeks.

Smith added his touchdown later in the half, and Cairo Santos knocked through a field goal, but the Chiefs blew a couple of opportunities. They were repelled twice at the 1-yard line and came away without any points, and Smith threw an interception in the end zone early in the second half.

Succop hit from 39 yards early in the fourth quarter make it a one-possession game, and the Titans promptly got the ball back and marched the other way, twice converting on third down and once on fourth to set up Henry’s 1-yard TD plunge. The 2-point conversion attempt was a disaster, but it wound up being moot.

The Titans’ defense and Succop’s strong right leg made sure of it.

WEATHER WOES

The record for coldest game at Arrowhead Stadium had been 9 degrees before Sunday. It was so cold that the fuses in the west scoreboard froze, blanking out a large section of it for much of the game.

INJURY UPDATE

The Titans lost safety Da’Norris Searcy to a concussion and cornerback Jason McCourty to a chest injury in the first half. Defensive tackle Karl Klug left with an ankle injury in the second half.

Carroll, Evans team for 44, Oklahoma State blows out Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Jeffrey Carroll scored 22 points on nearly perfect shooting, Jawun Evans also had 22 points and Oklahoma State cruised past Wichita State 93-76 Saturday night at Intrust Bank Arena.

The Cowboys (9-2) were 14 of 28 from the 3-point line and shot 52.5 percent for the game. Leyton Hammonds scored 12 for Oklahoma State, and Phil Forte III added 11.

Darral Willis, Jr. had 24 points and 13 rebounds for Wichita State (9-3) in its first home loss.

Oklahoma State took apart a defense that has been one of the nation’s best this season. The Shockers entered the day third nationally in field goal percentage defense (34.6) and 10th in scoring defense (59.5.) Jackson leads No. 3 Kansas past pesky Davidson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Josh Jackson and Frank Mason III scored 18 points apiece, helping third-ranked Kansas overcome a sluggish, sloppy first half to beat Davidson 89-71 on Saturday night at Sprint Center.

Svi Mykhailiuk also had 13 points for the Jayhawks (10-1), who extended their nation-leading home winning streak to 49 games. Kansas considered the matchup with the Wildcats (5-4) a home game even though it was played just down the road from its campus in Lawrence.

It was the Jayhawks’ eighth straight win in the building, including the Big 12 Tournament last season and the CBE Classic a few weeks ago. It’s also the same building where they will not only contest the league tournament in March but hope to land in the NCAA Tournament with a spot in the Final Four on the line.

Peyton Aldridge hit five 3s and had 22 points to lead the Wildcats, while Jack Gibbs — the nation’s fourth-leading scorer coming into the game — had 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
