No. 3 Jayhawks cruise to victory over Nebraska

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Frank Mason III had 18 points and seven assists without a turnover, Josh Jackson and Svi Mykhailiuk added 15 points apiece and No. 3 Kansas cruised to an 89-72 victory over Nebraska on Saturday.

The Jayhawks (9-1) had no trouble with their old conference foe despite playing without forward Carlton Bragg Jr., who is suspended indefinitely. Bragg was charged Friday with misdemeanor battery.

Bragg sat on the bench in street clothes, watching as Devonte Graham scored 14 points and Landen Lucas added 12, as the Jayhawks rolled to their 18th consecutive win over the Huskers and their 46th in a row at Allen Fieldhouse.

Tai Webster led Nebraska (5-5) with 22 points. Ed Morrow Jr. finished with 16.

TMP girls win, boys lose in Hill City

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

Girls: TMP 47, Hill City 36
Boys: Hill City 59, TMP 53

HILL CITY, Kan.-The TMP Lady Monarchs trailed only once at 2-0 early against Hill City in a battle between state ranked teams on Friday.  TMP scored the next eight points and never trailed again.  The Lady Monarch defense was outstanding all night long making it difficult for the dangerous Hill City shooters to get an open look.

TMP took a 26-15 lead into the locker room.  Hill City started the second half on a quick 4-0 run but TMP answered with a 6-0 run to push the lead back to double figures.  The Lady Monarchs turned the ball over five times in the third quarter but continued to hassle Hill City on the defensive end and led 36-26 after three quarters.

Hill City didn’t pose much of a problem in the fourth quarter and TMP picked up the 47-36 win.  Ellie Keener and Shaylin Russell led Hill City with 9 points as the Lady Ringnecks dropped to 1-1 on the season.  Kayla Vitztum led TMP with 19 points and Katelyn Zimmeran had 10 for the 3-1 Lady Monarchs who will play in Victoria on Tuesday.

ROSE MCFARLAND INTERVIEW

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

In the boys game TMP struggled to get anything going offensively in the first half against Hill City.  The Monarchs trailed 31-18 at the half thanks in part to 15 first half points from Zech Wilson.  Michael Lager led TMP at the break with 5.

Hill City kept TMP at arms length through the third quarter and took a 38-30 lead to the fourth quarter and that’s when things got interesting.  The Monarchs scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to close the Hill City lead to four.  The Ringnecks would answer with a 10-0 run to regain control and were never really challenged the rest of the way, winning 59-53.

Zech Wilson dazzled for Hill City scoring 32 points.  Everett Brandyberry added 15 for the Ringnecks.  Junior Creighton Renz was the only Monarch in double figures.  He scored 11.  Hill now improves to 2-0 on the season and will travel to Oberlin-Decatur Community.   TMP drops to 1-3 and will be in Victoria on Tuesday.

Kansas forward Carlton Bragg accused of domestic battery

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas forward Carlton Bragg Jr. has been arrested on suspicion of domestic battery.

The 20-year-old sophomore from Cleveland was taken into custody Thursday and accused of causing “reckless bodily harm to a family member,” according to booking records. His case was forwarded to the Douglas County prosecutor but no charges had been filed as of Friday morning.

Kansas associate athletic director Jim Marchiony said the school is aware of the situation and was still gathering facts. It is unclear whether Bragg will play Saturday against Nebraska.

Bragg has appeared in all nine games with five starts for the third-ranked Jayhawks this season, and is averaging 7.8 points and 5.3 rebounds in 16 minutes.

Chiefs hold off Raiders to take control of AFC West

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Tyreek Hill had touchdowns receiving and on a punt return, Kansas City’s defense made life miserable for Oakland quarterback Derek Carr, and the Chiefs beat the Raiders 21-13 on a frigid Thursday night to take control of the AFC West.

Charcandrick West also had a touchdown run for the Chiefs (10-3). They moved into a first-place tie with Oakland (10-3) but holds the tiebreaker with two wins over their longtime divisional rival.

Carr was 17 of 41 for 117 yards passing, though the ugly stat line wasn’t entirely his fault.

Seth Roberts dropped just about everything thrown at him, Amari Cooper couldn’t adjust to a long throw for a would-be touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and several more passes were dropped to the rock-hard turf of Arrowhead Stadium on a night when wind chills approached single digits.

Alex Smith threw for 261 yards with a touchdown and an interception to help the Chiefs, returning home after back-to-back road wins, beat Oakland for the seventh time in their last eight meetings.

Hill didn’t seem bothered by the cold, scorching the Raiders for a 36-yard TD reception before bringing a punt back 78 yards for another score. It made him the first rookie since Gale Sayers in 1965 with touchdowns on the ground, through the air and on punt and kickoff returns in a single season.

It was still 21-3 when the Chiefs lost linebacker Derrick Johnson to an Achilles injury, and that seemed to briefly deflate them. Oakland proceeded to march 92 yards for a touchdown just before halftime.

But the Raiders kept coming up empty with their chances in the second half.

Smith threw a pick on the second play of the third quarter, but Oakland had to settle for a field goal. And when Smith was strip-sacked by Khalil Mack on the next play, the Raiders again had to try a field goal – only this time, holder Marquette King couldn’t get the snap down.

The Raiders’ last chance came with about two minutes left, when a questionable pass interference penalty and a fourth-and-4 conversion got them deep into Kansas City territory. But after a false start on fourth-and-1, Carr’s pass toward the end zone was batted incomplete.

The Chiefs went on to pick up the first down they needed to put the game away.

CATCHING KELCE

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had five catches for 101 yards, his fourth consecutive game with at least 100 yards receiving. That matches the franchise record set by former tight end Tony Gonzalez.

MACK DADDY

Mack had a strip-sack for the third straight game, and a sack in his eighth straight dating to the Raiders’ loss to Kansas City in October. That matches Lance Johnstone for the longest streak in franchise history since sacks became official in 1982.

INJURIES

Johnson went down untouched late in the first half, and it appeared the veteran linebacker knew right away his Achilles was injured. He ruptured his right Achilles two years ago and missed the rest of the season. … Defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches left with back spasms and did not return.

Raiders offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele was a late scratch with an illness. Safety Karl Joseph was inactive with a toe injury and defensive tackle Stacy McGee was sidelined by an ankle injury.

UP NEXT

Oakland remains in the AFC West when it heads to slumping San Diego on Dec. 18.

Kansas City continues its three-game homestand Dec. 18 against Tennessee.

FHSU’s Cooper to forego senior season

It appears one of Fort Hays State’s all-time best running backs won’t be back for his senior season. Shaquille Cooper, who rushed for 971 yards and six touchdowns and had another 420 receiving yards with five scores this season, tweeted out yesterday and confirmed that he will forego his senior season for a professional career.

shaq-tweet

Cooper, who was a two-time All-MIAA first team selection, ran for 146 yards and a touchdown with 66 receiving yards and a score in the Tigers C.H.A.M.P.S Heart of Texas Bowl win. Cooper finished fourth on the school’s all-purpose yardage list and had 12, 100-yard rushing games, the second most in school history.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State overcame a cold shooting night as they rallied from an 11-point deficit late in the third quarter to beat Washburn 67-64 in overtime Wednesday at Gross Coliseum.

After hitting five of their first 11 shots to start the game, the Tigers hit only two the rest of the first, second and third quarters. They then knocked in seven of their first eight shots in the fourth quarter to erase the double-digit deficit and pick up their first conference win.

RUSSELL–Scoring the game-winning touchdown with 30 seconds left in Saturday’s NJCAA Football Championship Game, No. 1 Garden City (Kan.) defeated No. 2 Arizona Western 25-22 to clinch its first national title. On Monday, the polls confirmed what everyone already knew.

The Broncbusters garnered nine first-place votes en route to a runaway No. 1 ranking in the final regular season poll release by the NJCAA on Monday.

Garden City’s journey to the championship began with a victory over Ellsworth (Iowa) which resulted in a 14th place national ranking for the Broncbusters. Over the next several weeks, they climbed through the ranks and grabbed the No. 1 spot on October 17. They never relinquished the top spot, closing as the top team for the final six weeks of the season.

With the victory in Yuma, Garden City snapped Arizona Western’s 13-game winning streak and completed their first ever perfect season. The Broncbusters are the lone NJCAA team to finish the 2016 season undefeated.

Kiefer Craig, a 2015 Russell High School graduate, has been on the GCCC team for two seasons as a wide receiver and on special teams. In an interview with KRSL Russell Radio before the championship game, Craig reviewed Coach Jeff Sims’ philosophy of ‘Graduate, Championship, Scholarship.’ “He wants us to graduate, he wants us to be the best college football player we can be and he wants us to get a scholarship out of here. That’s his main goal. He doesn’t care if we win or lose, he just wants us to move on to a Division I, Division II or NAIA school.”

Craig has not made any final decisions regarding his plans after GCCC. He has embraced another of Coach Sims’ mottos, ‘Right Now.’ “We want to focus on the present moment, not worry about the past or future.”

Royals acquire Jorge Soler from Cubs for Wade Davis

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) – The World Series champion Chicago Cubs have acquired star closer Wade Davis from the Kansas City Royals for outfielder Jorge Soler.

The trade was announced Wednesday at the winter meetings.

Davis will take over the ninth-inning role held by Aroldis Chapman, who became a free agent after the Cubs won their first championship since 1908.

The 31-year-old Davis went 2-1 with 27 saves in 30 tries and a 1.87 ERA last season. He spent time on the disabled with a forearm injury and was limited to 43 1/3 innings, but returned to pitch in September.

Davis has done especially well in the postseason and helped the Royals win the 2015 crown. In 27 1/3 postseason innings as a reliever, he has a 0.33 ERA with 39 strikeouts.

The 24-year-old Soler hit .238 with 12 home runs and 31 RBIs in 86 games last season. He missed almost two months because of a strained left hamstring.
