Iwundu, Kansas State cruise to win over Hampton

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Wesley Iwundu hit 3 of 3 from 3-point range and scored 23 points, Barry Brown added 16 on 7-of-12 shooting and Kansas State beat Hampton 89-67 on Sunday night.

Xavier Sneed scored 15 and Kamau Stokes had 13 points for Kansas State. Sneed and Stokes made three 3-pointers apiece as the Wildcats hit 12 of 23 from behind the arc.

Stokes made a 3 to break a 10-all tie and spark a 13-0 run and Kansas State (3-0) took a 46-36 lead into halftime. The Wildcats led by double figures throughout the second half and scored 13-straight points to open their biggest lead, 75-49, with 7:23 remaining.

Jermaine Marrow and led Hampton (1-2) with 15 points. Lawrence Cooks hit three 3-pointers and scored 10.

Kansas State made 28 of 48 (58 percent) from the field and hit 21 of 38 foul shots. The Pirates were 5 of 10 from the free-throw line.

Rockhurst edges FHSU men’s soccer in NCAA II quarterfinals

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State fell in the national quarterfinal match for a third consecutive year as Rockhurst capitalized on one mistake early in the second half to escape Hays with a 1-0 decision. The Tigers outshot the Hawks, but saw their season end at 14-5-1 overall. Rockhurst moved to 18-2-3 overall.

FHSU Postgame Press Conference

Rockhurst Postgame Press Conference

All four of Fort Hays State’s first half shots were great goal-scoring opportunities, but the frame of the goal got in the way on three of the attempts. At 16:12 Maurizio Costa had a great try from just inside the 18-yard box hit the right post past a diving keeper. Three minutes later, the Tigers were denied once more on a flurry of attempts at the goal. Mauricio Castorino had a one-on-one with the keeper Logan Feldmann that he shot right into Feldmann’s hands. Michael Cole collected the rebound and Feldmann made another save as the ball rebounded out near the top of the box. Derick Gonzalez struck the ball and it hit the crossbar. The Tigers could have easily scored twice in those offensive situations and it would ultimately come back to sting in the end.

The mistake by the Tigers occurred in the 49th minute when Killian Gorman was unable to get enough on a header intended for goalkeeper Michael Yantz. Rockhurst had sent two passes forward from Sal Caruso and Adam Michel that got to the top of the box and with Gorman not able to get enough pace on his header, Kaleb Jackson dashed in to chip the ball over the hands of Yantz for the only goal of the match.

The Tigers had two more great opportunities in the final 10 minutes of the match. Arsenio Chamorro had a shot in near the net off a pass that found a diving Feldmann in the 82nd minute. In the match’s final minute, Derick Gonzalez also had a strike in near the goal that once again found Feldmann’s arms and the Hawks ran out the clock.

Feldmann had seven saves in goal to send the Hawks to the national semifinals for the second straight year. He moved to 18-2-3 with the win. Michael Yantz made three saves for FHSU and went to 8-5-1 on the season. Fort Hays State outshot Rockhurst 13-8 in the match.

The Tigers are now the three-time defending Central Region Champion and this was the first time FHSU earned the right to host the Super Regional on its home field.

Buccaneers snap Chiefs’ 5-game win streak

Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jameis Winston sliced up a Kansas City defense missing top cornerback Marcus Peters, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers held on for a 19-17 victory Sunday that snapped the Chiefs’ five-game winning streak.

Winston threw for 331 yards to help set up four field goals by Roberto Aguayo, and hit tight end Robert Cross for a touchdown with just over 6 minutes left to give the Buccaneers (5-5) a cushion.

The Chiefs (7-3) marched swiftly downfield, and Alex Smith hit Albert Wilson with a short touchdown pass with just over 2 minutes left. But their defense couldn’t stop Mike Evans on third-and-3 just moments later, and the big wide receiver’s sixth reception gave the Buccaneers a first down.

By the time Kansas City finally forced a punt, there was 8 seconds left in the game.

It was the Buccaneers’ fifth straight win over Kansas City dating to 1993, and it snapped a home winning streak for the Chiefs that dated to a loss to Chicago on Oct. 11, 2015.

The Chiefs, who had won 17 of their last 19 regular-season games, were done in by a popgun offense that has repeatedly fizzled in the red zone. They had to settle for a field goal by Cairo Santos on their first trip and Alex Smith threw an interception in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter.

Smith was 23 of 30 for 268 yards in another inconsistent performance, while Spencer Ware was bottled up much of the afternoon. The bruising running back finished with just 69 yards rushing.

WINCHESTER PLAYS

Chiefs long snapper James Winchester played one day after the funeral for his father, Michael, who was shot to death at an Oklahoma City airport on Tuesday. Police believe the elder Winchester, an employee for Southwest Airlines, was gunned down in retaliation for losing his own airline job.

HOUSTON RETURNS

Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston made his season debut, though he hardly factored into the game. The four-time Pro Bowl pick has been out after surgery in February to repair the ACL in his left knee.

INJURIES

Buccaneers: Starting cornerback Brent Grimes left in the first half with a quad injury and did not return. Backup offensive lineman Ben Gottschalk left with a knee injury.

Chiefs: Outside linebacker Dee Ford, the NFL sack leader with 10 coming in, did not play in the second half with a hamstring injury. Peters (hip pointer), starting defensive tackle Jaye Howard (knee) and wide receiver Jeremy Maclin (groin) were inactive.

UP NEXT

Buccaneers: Return home next weekend to take on another Super Bowl favorite, Seattle.

Chiefs: Head to Denver for a Sunday night showdown between AFC West contenders.

Wichita State ties school 3-point record in blowout of Maryland-Eastern Shore

WHICITA, Kan. (AP) — Landry Shamet and Daishon Smith each set career highs with 16 points and the Shockers shot 66 percent from the floor in a 116-79 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Sunday.

The last time the Shockers scored at least 110 points was against North Texas on March 1, 1962.

Wichita State hit 15 3-pointers which ties the school single-season record.

Austin Reaves scored a career-high 15 points, Zach Brown had 13 points, Conner Frankamp 11 with five assists and Darral Willis Jr. added 11 points, all in the first half, for Wichita State (4-0).

Shamet and Frankamp hit consecutive 3-pointers and the Shockers surged early, doubling the Hawks’ 21 points on Markis McDuffie’s layup en route to a 62-37 halftime lead. The Shockers shot 73 percent from the floor (19 of 26) in the first half.

Smith’s 3-pointer with 5:55 left put Wichita State over the 100-point mark.

Ryan Andino scored a career-high 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting for the Hawks (0-4), who shot 49 percent from the floor (27 of 55).

Kansas beats Texas for first time since 1938, 24-21 in OT

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Matthew Wyman followed his field goal that forced overtime with a 25-yarder in the extra session Saturday, giving Kansas a stunning 24-21 victory over Texas and embattled coach Charlie Strong.

The Jayhawks (2-9, 1-7) poured off the sideline and into a pile with thousands of students after snapping a 19-game Big 12 losing streak with their first win over the Longhorns since 1938.

Texas had won the last 13 games in the series.

The Longhorns (5-6, 3-5) squandered plenty of chances down the stretch, including a fumble and a failed fourth-down try in the final minutes of regulation that could have put the game away.

They got the ball first in overtime, but Shane Buechele badly overthrew his intended receiver on their second play and Mike Lee was there to pick it off. After the Jayhawks marched inside the 5-yard line, their senior kicker playing in his final home game knocked through the winner.

It made D’Onta Foreman’s performance merely a footnote.

The Texas running back carried a school-record 51 times for 250 yards and two touchdowns, though his two fumbles proved costly — not only to the Longhorns’ season but quite possibly to Strong’s future.

The third-year coach has been on the hot seat all season, and the temperature is only going to rise after a loss to the lowly Jayhawks. Strong dropped to 16-20 since arriving at Texas, and not even the $10 million buyout he would be due could be enough to keep him from getting fired.

The Jayhawks took advantage of four first-half turnovers, including a pick-six by Brandon Stewart, to take a 10-7 lead into the locker room. But they committed two turnovers of their own in an ugly third quarter, which the Longhorns turned into back-to-back touchdowns for a 21-10 lead.

Kansas marched downfield for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, and Steven Sims won the race to the pylon to convert the 2-point conversion and get within a field goal.

That proved to be pivotal in the final minute of the game.

The Jayhawks stuffed Texas on fourth down and regained possession with 58 seconds left. Three completions to Ke’aun Kinner and a targeting penalty got them within field goal range. Wyman’s kick from 36 yards out with 7 seconds remaining sent the game to overtime.

THE TAKEAWAY

Texas was shaky throughout the game, especially when Buechele left for a short period in the first half with an injury, in what might go down as the biggest indictment of Strong’s tenure.

Kansas has been close to breaking through several times this season, including a 24-23 loss to TCU in early October and a 31-24 loss to Iowa State earlier this month.

Plainville earns title game spot with win over Smith Center

The Plainville Cardinals used a stout defense and just enough offense to upend Smith Center 14-0 Friday night to earn their first appearance in a state championship game since 1985.

After forcing Smith Center to punt on their first possession the Cardinals offense scored on a 60-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Hayden Friend, his first of two touchdowns on the night, to take a 7-0 lead.

Smith Center failed to put together another successful offense drive on their second offense possession and was forced to punt and Plainville would again take advantage.

The Cardinals put together a 10-play 85 yard drive that was capped off by a one yard Friend touchdown run giving Plainville a 14-0 lead with less than two minutes to play in the first quarter.

The defenses would dominate the game over the next three quarters resulting in a 14-0 win for Plainville.

Friend had a game-high 129 yards on 24 carriers and two touchdowns for the Cardinals. Riley Nyp added 92 yards rushing. Plainville outgained Smith Center 267 to 109 total yards.
