Tiger men’s soccer comes up short at Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa – The 21st-ranked Fort Hays State men’s soccer team had its hopes of sharing an MIAA title dashed after suffering a 2-1 loss at the hands of Upper Iowa on Friday. With the loss the Tigers drop to 12-4-1 on the season and 5-2 in the MIAA, while the Peacocks improved to 7-9 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

Ryan Pinkerton gave the Peacocks a 1-0 lead in the 27th-minute with his fourth goal of the year. From about 25 yards out he squared up and ripped a shot that found the left corner of the FHSU net. Just over five minutes later, Aaron Morgan once again found the back of the net for UIU increasing its lead to 2-0. Morgan was the beneficiary of some nice passing that landed at his feet about three yards out and he tapped it in.

A positive note from the first half was the Tigers outshooting the Peacocks by a total of 12-5, but only four of the 12 shots were on net.

The second half was much of the same for the Tigers as they once again outshot UIU 8-1. The Tigers were much more efficient in the second half with their shots as 50 percent were on goal. That being said, Mauricio Castorino was able to cut the lead in half and get the Tigers back in the match when he recorded his fifth goal of the season. Castorino took a ball from 20 yards out, put a move on a defender and sprinted to his right towards the middle of the box. Then he ripped a shot that bounced off of the inside of the far post and in with 13:25 to remaining in the match.

The comeback however was too little, too late as the Upper Iowa defense thwarted any other threats the Tigers brought their way.

FHSU wraps up the regular season on Sunday when they take on Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo. Kickoff is set for 1 pm. Lindenwood claimed the MIAA regular season title outright with the Tigers loss on Friday.

Chiefs’ Spencer Ware ruled out vs. Jaguars with concussion

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs running back Spencer Ware has been rule out of Sunday’s game against Jacksonville with a concussion, though wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and defensive tackle Jaye Howard are expected to be available.

Maclin returned to practice Friday after tweaking his hamstring earlier in the week, while Howard was back after dealing with a hip injury he suffered last weekend against Indianapolis.

Alex Smith had already been ruled out with a head injury. Nick Foles will start at quarterback.

Others who have been ruled out include offensive lineman Parker Ehinger, who has a knee injury that could be season-ending, and cornerback D.J. White, who is recovering from a fractured hand.

Royals use $10M option on Davis, $6.5M option on Escobar

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals exercised club options on All-Star closer Wade Davis and shortstop Alcides Escobar on Friday, while designated hitter Kendrys Morales and starter Edinson Volquez declined their mutual options.

Davis will make $10 million next season and Escobar will earn $6.5 million.

The Royals also declined their mutual option on Kris Medlen after the right-hander exercised his portion of it. Medlen will join Morales and Volquez in free agency beginning Tuesday.

In other procedural moves, the Royals reinstated pitchers Tim Collins and Mike Minor and third baseman Mike Moustakas from the 60-day disabled list. That leaves their 40-man roster at 39 players.

Broncos rule out Aqib Talib for showdown at Oakland

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – The Denver Broncos will be without Pro Bowl cornerback Aqib Talib for their Sunday night showdown with the Oakland Raiders.

Talib was sent for a cortisone injection in his lower back Friday and coach Gary Kubiak said he was optimistic that will help Talib return to the field soon.

Talib missed Denver’s 27-19 win over San Diego last week when his back stiffened during the team’s walkthrough the day before the game.

Bradley Roby started in his place and earned the AFC’s defensive player of the week honors after recording seven tackles, two pass breakups and a pick-6 .

The Bluejays, who played in the WNIT last season and are picked to win the BIG EAST, hit 11 of their 13 shots in the third quarter including seven of eight from 3-point range.

The Tigers shot 31-percent from the floor including 5-of-18 from beyond the arc and were 9-of-14 from the free throw line.

FHSU women’s soccer uses thrilling shootout victory to advance in MIAA Tournament

HAYS, Kan. – The 21st-ranked Fort Hays State women’s soccer team advanced to the semifinal round of the MIAA Tournament after a nail-biting shootout victory over Missouri Western on Wednesday. The game officially goes down as a 0-0 draw, but the shootout determined the advancing team. That being the case, Fort Hays State is now 14-3-2 overall, while MWSU moved to 11-7-1 overall.

It was a defensive battle all night for both teams. In regulation, both teams managed to get off nine shots but neither could produce a goal. Both goalkeepers were outstanding as FHSU’s Abbie Flax was able to stop five shots and MWSU’s Lexie Martin stopped four.

The match-saving play for the Tigers came late in the second half when a Griffon forward took a one touch and sent it to the bottom right corner of the Tiger goal from about ten yards out. Flax reacted quickly diving to her left to barely get her fingertips on the ball and push it to the outside the post.

After a scoreless 90 minutes the Tiger faithful at FHSU Soccer Stadium were treated to free soccer. In the first overtime period, the Tigers managed to outshoot the Griffons 3-0. Neither team could get anything going after 110 minutes and the shootout ensued.

The Tigers took the first kick of the night and Silvana Romero set the tone. She rifled a shot in the upper part of the goal the Griffon keeper had no chance on. After the equalizer from the Griffons, Dani Harris took to the line for the Tigers and she delivered going to the left side just inside the post past the diving keeper. Once again Missouri Western kept the pressure on and knotted the count at 2-2. Hannah Smith stepped to the line and fooled the keeper, who dove the opposite direction, sending her try inside the right post. With the Tigers leading 3-2 Abbie Flax stepped up and made a save to give the Tigers an edge. The Missouri Western shooter Ahslyn Powers sent a ball to Flax’s right side and did not get enough angle on it as Flax caught and controlled it. With the one-point lead, freshman Darby Hirsch showed maturity sending a shot inside the right post extending the FHSU lead to 4-2. After the Griffons pulled within one, Thayla Dwyer stepped to the line. Dwyer showed no signs of nerves and buried the fifth attempt to advance the Tigers by the score of 5-3 in the shootout.

Next up for the Tigers is No. 3 seed Central Oklahoma as they handled Emporia State earlier in the day by the score of 2-0. The final two rounds of the tournament will be held at top-seeded Central Missouri  on Friday. The Jennies blanked Washburn 4-0.

Chiefs’ Smith to miss game vs Jaguars; Charles has surgery

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith will miss Sunday’s game against Jacksonville after his head bounced hard off the turf twice during last weekend’s game in Indianapolis.

Nick Foles will start in his place and Tyler Bray will serve as the backup.

Smith said Wednesday he never failed any of the concussion tests administered after each of the blows, the second of which knocked him from the game. But after consulting with coach Andy Reid and others in the front office, it was decided he would not be active this week.

Smith will run the practice squad and hopes to play next week at Carolina.

Foles was sharp in relief against Indianapolis, going 16 of 22 for 223 yards with two touchdowns and no picks in the Chiefs’ 30-14 victory.

Running back Jamaal Charles had exploratory surgery on his right knee Wednesday as the Chiefs try to determine why there is lingering pain from reconstructive surgery last season.

The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews, who has repaired both of his torn ACLs.

Charles was placed on injured reserve, which means he will miss at least eight weeks. The four-time Pro Bowl running back could conceivably return for the playoffs, but that appears to be a longshot.

Charles tore his right ACL in Week 5 last season. The Chiefs hoped he would be ready this season, but a series of setbacks limited him to 12 carries over three games

The Chiefs are also likely to be without Spencer Ware for Sunday’s game against Jacksonville. He had not passed the league’s concussion protocol after getting hurt last weekend in Indianapolis.
