Denver gives Osweiler rude welcome in win over Houston

Broncos logoDENVER (AP) – The Denver Broncos ruined Brock Osweiler’s homecoming Monday night, incessantly hurrying, hitting and harassing their former teammate in a 27-9 win over his Houston Texans.

Coach Gary Kubiak returned to the sideline following his second health scare in three years, and he had to like what he saw as the Broncos (5-2) snapped a two-game skid in sending the overwhelmed Texans home at 4-3.

C.J. Anderson and Devontae Booker energized Denver’s sputtering ground game, both running for a touchdown. Anderson gained 107 yards on 16 carries and Booker had 83 on 17 hand-offs.

But the big story was Trevor Siemian, Peyton Manning’s surprise successor, outplaying Osweiler, who was groomed to be Denver’s next QB but instead bolted to Houston in free agency.

Osweiler left for bigger numbers in Texas – both in his bank account and his stat sheet – but he spent this night quickly getting rid of the ball, constantly overthrowing DeAndre Hopkins in double coverage and otherwise running for his life from Von Miller & Co.

Although he avoided sacks, Osweiler was just 22 for 41 for 131 yards with no TDs and no interceptions. Siemian was 14 of 25 for 157 yards, a TD and no interceptions.

Osweiler’s fumble at his own 25-yard line was scooped up by Chris Harris Jr. on the first play of the fourth quarter. That led to Brandon McManus’ chip-shot field goal that made it 24-9 and snuffed out Houston’s hopes of a comeback.

Anderson scored on a 7-yard run and Siemian hit Demaryius Thomas from 4 yards out as the Broncos took a 14-6 halftime lead.

Osweiler took a couple of big shots from safeties Darian Stewart and T.J. Ward in the first quarter but the Texans led 6-0 on a pair of 43-yard field goals by Nick Novak.

Novak’s 29-yarder made it 14-9, but Stewart punched the ball from running back Alfred Blue’s grasp and linebacker Todd Davis plucked it out of the air. That led to Booker’s 1-yard TD run.

Kubiak missed Denver’s last game when doctors ordered him to take a week off after he was transported via ambulance to the hospital following Denver’s last home game, on Oct. 9, with a complex migraine condition, which can mimic a stroke. Kubiak had a mini-stroke in 2013 while coaching the Texans.

Like Osweiler, this was his first game against his former team.

STREAK BREAKER: Denver’s dazzling defense is a real dawdler , having allowed scores on five of six opening drives coming into the game. That didn’t stop them from deferring when they won the toss. The Texans went three and out on their first two possessions, the first time all season the Broncos hadn’t allowed points on their first two defensive series.

OH NO, OKUNG: Broncos left tackle Russell Okung cleared concussion protocol to make the start. But he was rusty a week after his pair of penalties resulted in a nullified touchdown and a safety in a 21-13 loss at San Diego. This time, he was whistled for a pair of holds that negated a nifty first-down run by Booker and a 28-yard grab by Thomas.

INJURIES : Texans right tackle Derek Newton was carted off the field with what looked like serious injuries to both knees in the first half. He crumpled to the grass while blocking Miller. Newton was dropping back to pass block midway through the first quarter when his left knee buckled first and then his right knee gave way. For Denver, linebackers Brandon Marshall (leg) and Dekoda Watson (head) left in the second half.

RING OF FAME : The Broncos honored former safety John Lynch, linebacker Simon Fletcher and kicker Jason Elam by inducting them into their Ring of Fame during halftime ceremonies. Lynch, who played in Denver from 2004-07 after 11 seasons in Tampa Bay, will be inducted into the Buccaneers’ Ring of Honor next month.

HAYS, Kan. — Former Tiger placekicker Drew O’Brien, the all-time leading scorer in Fort Hays State football history, has signed to play the 2017 season with the Salina Liberty, a member of Champions Indoor Football, a 16-team professional league. A Hays native and graduate of Thomas More Prep-Marian High School, O’Brien will reunite with former Tiger teammates linebacker Brock Long and running back Edward Smith, returnees from the Liberty’s inaugural season this past spring.

O’Brien, a four-year starter for the Tigers, broke FHSU’s 49-year-old school scoring record in the eighth game of his senior season. He finished his career with 244 total points and is on the top 10 list of numerous kicking and punting categories at FHSU. In 2015, O’Brien and Long were members of a record-setting Tiger team that qualified for postseason action for the first time in 20 years. Fort Hays State finished 8-4 to tie the school record for most wins in a season.

After setting single-season records of 171 tackles and 21.5 tackles for loss at FHSU last fall, Long went on to lead the CIF in tackles per game during the Liberty’s indoor spring season. Smith last played for the Tigers in 2014, when he led the team in rushing. In his first season with the Liberty, Smith was fourth in yards per catch among CIF players.

The CIF represents an area that stretches across the mid-United States from Michigan to New Mexico and from North Dakota to Texas. The Liberty is a member of the Central Division along with the Dodge City Law, the Wichita Force and the Duke City Gladiators out of Albuquerque, N.M.

The CIF schedule runs from March through June.

FHSU’s Doe, Brown named MIAA football Athletes of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State had two of the three MIAA Football Athletes of the Week named on Monday. Both earn the distinction for the second time this year as Sie Doe, Jr. was named the Defensive Athlete of the Week and Brandon Brown was named the Special Teams Athlete of the Week.

Sie Doe, Jr. had another big weekend with 11 tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble in Fort Hays State’s 35-27 win over Missouri Western. With the two sacks, Doe tied the single season record at FHSU now with 12 on the season. His record-tying sack was a big key to the win, forcing a fumble on the sack that FHSU recovered with 8:25 to go in the game. The Tigers scored a touchdown just two plays later to gain breathing room with a 28-19 lead. He was one of four Tigers to reach double figures in tackles for the game.

Brown averaged 43.5 yards per punt in the 35-27 win for Fort Hays State over Missouri Western. He punted eight times with two resulting in drives starting inside the 20 and three resulting in touchbacks. His longest punt of the game was a 78 yarder for a touchback, tying the second-longest punt in FHSU history. He averaged 54.4 yards on kickoffs with three touchbacks, and went 5-of-5 on extra-point conversions.

Garrett Fugate of Central Missouri was named the Offensive Athlete of the Week, joining Doe and Brown for the weekly honors.

K-State’s Willis Named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. – After climbing up the Kansas State career sack list once again on Saturday in the Wildcats’ 24-21 victory over Texas, senior defensive end Jordan Willis was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Willis picked up his first-career Big 12 weekly honor and the second by a Wildcat defender this season. K-State ranks second in the Big 12 with 43 conference player of the week honors since 2011, including six in 2016.

A product of Kansas City, Missouri, Willis filled up the stat sheet as he carded seven tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, a pair of sacks, a forced fumble and a pass breakup. The senior, who leads the Big 12 in both sacks and TFLs, improved his season sack total to 8.0 to rank third in the nation, while he now has 11.5 TFLs this year to stand seventh nationally.

Willis now has 22.5 career sacks as he moved into fourth place in Kansas State history, the most by a Wildcat since Darren Howard set the school record with 29.5 from 1996-99. He also has 34.5 career TFLs, just 4.5 shy of entering the school’s top-10 list that does not include anyone that has played in the last 15 years.

Alex Smith leads Chiefs past mistake-prone Saints

Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes in another efficient outing, Daniel Sorensen returned an interception of Drew Brees for another touchdown and the Kansas City Chiefs held off the mistake-prone New Orleans Saints 27-21 on Sunday.

Spencer Ware ran for 77 yards to go with his 46-yard touchdown reception, and Tyreek Hill made an acrobat 38-yard TD catch to help the Chiefs (4-2) win their ninth straight at home.

Brees got the Saints (2-4) within 24-21 with his touchdown pass to Brandon Coleman with 2:33 left, but the ensuing onside kick went out of bounds. Kansas City added a 41-yard field goal, and the Saints could do nothing in the final 28 seconds to change the outcome.

Brees finished with 367 yards and three TD passes, but much of that offense came while he was trying to rally the Saints. It was actually another uneven performance away from the Superdome for the star quarterback, who was coming off a 465-yard game last week against Carolina.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs showed some mettle after falling into an early 7-0 hole. Ware’s touchdown on a screen pass and Sorensen’s pick-six off a batted ball quickly turned the momentum, and Hill added his long touchdown reception to make it 21-7 at the break.

The Saints drew within a touchdown on Mark Ingram’s catch midway through the third quarter, but the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner fumbled inside the Kansas City 10 with 8:26 left in the game and the Chiefs leading 24-14.

New Orleans got the ball back and eventually scored, but the wasted time proved costly.

LOTS OF LAUNDRY

The Saints struggled with the crowd noise in Arrowhead Stadium, getting flagged for four false starts and a delay of game. They also got hit with two unnecessary roughness penalties, including one with just over two minutes left that kept them from getting the ball back.

REID ROLLS 300

The Chiefs’ Andy Reid coached his 300th game Sunday. Most of those were over his 14 seasons in Philadelphia, where he was 140-102-1. He is now 36-21 in his fourth season in Kansas City.

INJURY REPORT

Saints: LB Dannell Ellerbe (quad), LB Stephone Anthony (hamstring) and CB Delvin Breaux (broken leg) left New Orleans without three defensive starters, while starting LG Andrus Peat (groin) was also out. Backup LG Senio Kelemete later left with a stinger, forcing Tim Lelito into the lineup.

Chiefs: Starting CB Phillip Gaines (knee) was inactive, while RB Jamaal Charles (knee swelling) was active in a limited role. He had just one carry early in the game.

No. 23 FHSU women’s soccer downs Central Oklahoma

HAYS, Kan. – The 23rd-ranked Fort Hays State women’s soccer team earned another big MIAA win on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Central Oklahoma. The Tigers moved to 12-3-1 overall and 8-1 in the MIAA, remaining on top of the conference standings with just two matches to play. The Bronchos drop to 10-5-1 overall and 6-3 in the conference.

This is another big win for the Tigers in the NCAA Regional picture. The Tigers went into the week ranked No. 5 in the Central Region, but knocked off No. 3 ranked Northeastern State and No. 4 ranked Central Oklahoma. FHSU also handed No. 2 ranked Minot State its only loss of the season. Now with wins over the No. 2, 3, and 4 ranked teams in the region, the Tigers could make a big leap in next week’s rankings. Central Missouri is No. 1 in the region and is the only team to defeat the Tigers in conference play this year. But UCM has a conference loss and went into Sunday tied with FHSU for first in the MIAA standings.

Kelsey Steffens gave the Tigers the 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when she recorded her fifth goal of the season. Dani Harris sent a great through pass to the sprinting Steffens who fired a shot from 10 yards out to beat the diving keeper.

Mikayla Lowery knotted the score at 1-1 when she tallied her fourth goal of the season for the Bronchos. After a corner kick, Kelsey Gordon sent a header that a Tiger defender was able to block on the goal line but Lowery took the rebound and had a header of her own that found the back of the net at the 30:04 mark.

Hannah Jurgens put the Tigers back on top 2-1 before the half was over with her second goal of the year. Thalya Dwyer sent a nice ball to Jurgens inside the box and she ripped a shot from right around the penalty kick stripe that found the back of the net.

The Tigers extended their lead to 3-1 in the second half when Hannah Smith tallied her third goal of the season. Darby Hirsch sent a beautiful corner kick into the box and Smith gained position to send an uncontested header past the UCO keeper at the 71:50 mark.

Abbie Flax picked up the win for FHSU saving six of the seven shots put on goal by UCO. She is now 10-3-1 on the season.

Fort Hays State’s quest for an MIAA Regular Season Championship continues when they head to Nebraska-Kearney on Friday. The match is set for 2 pm.

After the Griffons took the lead back on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Skyler Windmiller to Dijuan Ussery, Mezera found Layne Bieberle on a 36-yard pass which gave Fort Hays State (6-2) the lead for good.
