FHSU women’s soccer jumps back into NSCAA Top 25

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After sitting in the receiving votes section of the NSCAA Women’s Division II Top 25 Poll for the past two weeks, the Tigers have jumped back into the top 25 at No. 23 this week. This is the second time the Tigers have been inside the top 25 this year.

The Fort Hays State women entered the top 25 for the first time in program history earlier this season at No. 16. It was a brief stay in the poll for just a week after taking a tie and a loss with the No. 16 ranking. The Tigers will look for their first win as a top 25 team this week when they host big matches against Northeastern State and Central Oklahoma in Hays.

With a four-match win streak, Fort Hays State is now 10-3-1 overall on the season. Defense has been a big key to success this year as the Tigers have allowed just six goals all season. FHSU has eight shutouts as a team and has not allowed more than one goal in a match this season.

Central Missouri and Fort Hays State are the only two MIAA schools inside the top 25. Central Missouri is currently ranked No. 4 and is tied with FHSU and Central Oklahoma at the top of the MIAA standings, all at 6-1. Northeastern State is receiving votes in the national poll with a mark of 12-2 overall.

His tied for second in the MIAA in total goals for the season and ranks second in goals per match. He also ranks second in points per match (1.42).

Big 12 stands pat and touts unity, but is it built to last?

UNDATED (AP) – The 10 schools that make up the Big 12 are bound together by a deal committing their television rights to the conference through the 2024-25 school year.

Expansion wasn’t going to change that, so the Big 12 declined yesterday to add two schools from a group of 11 that included BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and Connecticut. The conference’s leaders then tried their best to put forth a unified front and positive outlook for the future.

In spite of yesterday’s decision, the Big 12 still has much to figure out in the near and long-term. For one, the conference must decide how best to implement its football championship game, which is slated to return next year. Almost all available solutions are square-peg-round-hole proposals, but the conference thinks it needs the game to better its chances at the College Football Playoff and raise more revenue.

The Big 12 paid out $30.2 million to each of its members this year, a record amount and third most among Power Five conferences. Still, long-term projections have the Big Ten and SEC pulling away in the revenue race from the Big 12, Pac-12 and ACC over the coming years.

Bowlsby said figuring new ways to generate more is one of the conference’s top priorities.

Big 12 presidents decide to pass on expansion

GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) – The Big 12 Conference has decided against expansion from its current 10 members.

The announcement came after a six-hour meeting Monday with the conference’s university presidents and Commissioner Bob Bowlsby.

The Big 12 has been analyzing expansion options for the last three months, but it never made a commitment to expand.

Conference officials held interviews in September with Air Force and Colorado State from the Mountain West; Central Florida, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Houston, South Florida, SMU and Tulane from the American Athletic Conference; and BYU, which is a football independent with its other sports in the West Coast Conference.

Ware, Smith help lead Chiefs to win over Raiders

Chiefs LogoOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Spencer Ware ran for a career-high 131 yards and a touchdown and Alex Smith picked apart Oakland’s struggling defense in the Kansas City Chiefs’ 26-10 win over the Raiders on Sunday.

In their first game since getting blown out by 29 points in Pittsburgh two weeks ago, the Chiefs (3-2) efficiently handled a Raiders team that had overcome defensive shortcomings with a big-play offense to lead the AFC West.

Smith completed 19 of 22 passes for 224 yards, Jamaal Charles and big defensive lineman Dontari Poe each ran for scores and the Chiefs forced two turnovers by Derek Carr to dampen a fast start to the season by the Raiders (4-2), who are trying to end a 13-year playoff drought.

Marcus Peters set up Ware’s TD run with an early interceptions of Carr and Dee Ford forced a fumble from Carr in the fourth quarter to end any hopes of a late comeback.

After allowing a touchdown on the opening drive, the Chiefs held the Raiders to one field goal the rest of the way in a thorough victory that improved coach Andy Reid to 16-2 following a bye.

BIG MAN TD: The 346-pound Poe showed off some versatility. With the Chiefs facing 3rd-and-goal from the 1 in the third quarter, Poe came in as an eligible receiver. He initially lined up in the backfield before shifting out wide right. He then took a lateral from Smith and bulled with way into the end zone for the TD. It was the first TD run by a defensive player since Poe had won last year against San Diego.

WELCOME BACK: After getting only two carries in his first game back from a torn ACL in Week 5 last year, Charles played a slightly bigger role this week. He came in on Kansas City’s second drive and scored his first TD since Sept. 28, 2015, with a 4-yard run midway through the second quarter. Charles finished with nine carries for 33 yards and two catches for 14 yards.

QUICK TURNAROUND: Just when it looked like the Chiefs would add on to a 13-7 lead late in the first half, there was a major momentum shift. Spencer Ware was stopped for a 2-yard loss on third-and-1 by Stacy McGee and Cairo Santos missed a 38-yard field goal. The Raiders took over with 25 seconds left and one timeout. But Carr quickly completed three passes for 44 yards and then spiked the ball with 1 second left, setting up a 46-yard field goal by Sebastian Janikowski that cut Kansas City’s lead to 13-10 at the half.

FAST START: The Raiders jumped out early, thanks to a 50-yard return of the opening kick by Jalen Richard. Carr completed four of five passes on the ensuing drive, including a 3-yarder to Andre Holmes that made it 7-0 with Oakland’s second first-drive TD of the season. That was about it for highlights for the Raiders as Carr struggled in the rain and wasn’t helped by dropped third-down passes from Seth Roberts and Richard.

FHSU men’s soccer cruises to home win

HAYS, Kan. – The 25th-ranked Fort Hays State men’s soccer team improved to 8-3-1 overall with a 3-0 shutout of University of Mary on Saturday (Oct. 15). FHSU won both of its games against Mary this season. The Marauders are now 6-6 overall.

Mauricio Castorino started the scoring for FHSU in the 11th minute when he recorded his third goal of the season. Michael Cole beat a defender down the left side of the field and then sent a ball to Castorino who put a quick move on a defender and then sent a shot into the bottom left corner of the net.

Dylan Kintner made it 2-0 in favor of the Tigers when he notched his second goal of the season. It was a great all around effort for the goal. Thanks to some nifty passing from Caesar Jones and Moises Peralta, Kintner found space in the box and launched a missile that found the back of the net in the 44th minute.

Derick Gonzalez made it a three goal game when he recorded his team-leading seventh goal. Similar to the Cole-Castorino connection earlier in the match, Gonzalez took a pass in the box from Drew Wilson who made an offensive run from his defensive position. Gonzalez corralled the ball and blistered a shot past the diving keeper at the 60:04 mark.

Alex Rodela picked up the win in net for FHSU, stopping all five shots he faced. He now has won all three games he has started this season.

Next up for the Tigers is another non-conference match on Thursday (Oct. 20) when they travel to Oklahoma Baptist. The match is set for 7 pm.

FHSU women’s soccer remains on top of MIAA with shutout at Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Fort Hays State women’s soccer team recorded their fourth win in a row on Saturday (Oct. 15) with a 1-0 win at Missouri Southern.  With the win the Tigers have now reached 10 wins in their last three seasons, now at 10-3-1 overall and 6-1 in the MIAA. The Lions dropped to 3-8-2 and 0-6-1 in the MIAA. The Tigers moved into first place alone in the MIAA at 6-1 at least until Sunday, when three teams at 5-1 take the pitch.

The match was a defensive battle for the first 72 minutes until Darby Hirsch recorded her first goal of the season in the 73rd minute. Hirsch was in the right place at the right time as a rebound off of a free kick fell into her lap and she rifled it to the back of the net. That was all FHSU needed as the defense recorded their eighth shutout of the year and third in a row.

Abbie Flax recorded two saves in goal for the Tigers and is now 7-3-1 this season.

The Tigers come back to FHSU Soccer Stadium for their next match as they welcome Northeastern State, one of the teams currently 5-1 in the MIAA, on Friday (Oct. 21). Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
