Another slow start leaves Chiefs perplexed after loss
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Maybe the Chiefs should have petitioned the NFL to avoid noon kickoffs.
They might be 2-0.
Kansas City got out of the gate like a beat-up Pinto trying to find first gear on Sunday, the second straight slow start for a team that can ill afford to dig out of holes.
And unlike the previous week, when the Chiefs managed the biggest comeback in franchise history to beat the San Diego Chargers, they were unable to come all the way back in a 19-12 loss to the Houston Texans.
Coach Andy Reid says the Chiefs made too many mistakes to come out on the right end of the score.
One thing that might get the Chiefs off to a faster start against the New York Jets this Sunday? The return of four-time Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles, their biggest difference-maker on offense.
Charles has been practicing for several weeks after surgery to repair his torn right ACL last season, but he has been inactive for the first two games. Reid says Charles has told him there’s a chance he could be ready to play against the Jets.

Ventura posts first complete-game win, Royals beat White Sox

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Yordano Ventura picked up his first complete-game victory, Kendrys Morales hit a three-run homer and the Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox 8-3 Monday.
The Royals have won three straight, keeping their faint playoff hopes flickering with 12 games remaining. The Royals went 14-5 against the White Sox this year.
Ventura (11-11) gave up nine hits, struck out five and walked one. His only other complete game in the majors was a loss July 28 at Texas.
Ventura had allowed 10 runs, 17 hits and six walks in 11 1-3 innings in losing his previous two starts.
Morales homered off Carlos Rodon (7-10) in a four-run fifth. Morales homered in back-to-back games, bringing his total to 29. The last Royal to hit 30 home runs in a season was Jermaine Dye, with 33 in 2000.

FHSU’s Sie Doe Jr. named Co-MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State senior defensive end Sie Doe, Jr., was named Co-MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday (Sept. 19) for his efforts in a 34-20 win over Central Oklahoma this past weekend. He shares the honor this week with Washburn linebacker Cody Heiman.
Doe had a team-best 13 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, and a sack on Saturday. He was the only player in the game to record a sack, bringing his season total to four. He currently leads the MIAA in total sacks. Doe and the FHSU defense limited Central Oklahoma, which entered the game averaging 524 yards of total offense, to just 383 yards of total offense.
Heiman recorded a career-high 14 tackles with nine solo stops adding a half sack, two pass break ups and one interception. His interception returned to the Ichabod 45 set up Washburn for a touchdown putting the Ichabods up 34-7 against Lindenwood.
Garrett Fugate of Central Missouri was named the Offensive Athlete of the Week and Jaylen Zachery of Central Missouri earned Special Teams Athlete of the Week.
Miller’s sack-strip leads Broncos past Colts
DENVER (AP) — Von Miller gave the Denver fans a reminder of his Super Bowl 50 MVP performance, sweeping in for the sack-strip of Andrew Luck that sealed the Broncos’ 34-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
With the Broncos clinging to a six-point lead with 1:51 remaining, Miller burst past right tackle Joe Reitz and swiped the ball from Luck’s grasp. Fellow linebacker Shane Ray scooped up the ball and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown.
Miller added a sack on the last play as the Broncos (2-0) sent the banged-up Colts limping to their third consecutive 0-2 start.
They did it by rattling Luck, who started 5 for 18 before he engineered a couple of second-half touchdown drives. Luck completed just 21 of 40 passes for 197 yards and was sacked five times.
Trevor Siemian outshone Luck, just as he did Cam Newton in the opener. He completed 22 of 33 passes for 266 yards.
Cornerback Aqib Talib returned an interception 46 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, giving Denver a 23-13 lead.
Talib stepped in front of wide receiver Phillip Dorsett to snag Luck’s pass, which he returned through traffic down Denver’s jubilant sideline. His ninth career pick-6 was his fifth for Denver, a franchise record.
Luck threw a 7-yard TD pass to Frank Gore with 4:02 remaining, pulling the Colts to 23-20. The drive was kept alive by safety Darian Stewart’s roughing penalty for smacking the quarterback in the helmet as he slid for the first down on a third-and-1 scramble at his own 30.
Stewart was fined 18,231 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Newton in the opener and can expect another fine this week.
D’Qwell Jackson stuffed C.J. Anderson on third-and-1 from the Colts 17 and Brandon McManus’s 35-yard field goal made it 26-20 with 1:51 left.
After a touchdown, Luck lined up and took the snap.
In a split-second, the ball was on the ground, and Luck watched helplessly as Ray scooped it up and scored.
THIN AIR: One week after Panthers punter Andy Lee had a 76-yard kick in Denver’s mile-high air, Pat McAfee had a 72-yarder for the Colts that was nearly blocked but ended up bouncing into the north end zone for a touchback.
HONORING GREATS: The Broncos unveiled signs in the south end zone before the game honoring the players with retired numbers: Hall of Famers John Elway (7) and Floyd Little (44) and the No. 18 for Frank Tripucka, the first QB in franchise history. Tripucka’s sign included a mention of Peyton Manning . Tripucka, who played from 1960-63, gave his blessing for Manning to wear the number when he was with the Broncos from 2012-15.
INJURY UPDATE:
Colts: CB Antonio Cromartie (shoulder) got hurt when he smacked into Emmanuel Sanders on the game’s second snap, but returned in the second quarter. WR Donte Moncrief left in the second quarter with a head and neck injury. CB Rashaan Melvin left in the third quarter with cramps. RG Denzelle Good left in the fourth quarter with a back injury. Indianapolis began the day without three starters from their secondary in cornerback Vontae Davis (ankle) and Patrick Robinson (concussion) and safety T.J. Green (knee).
Broncos: RT Donald Stephenson went out in the first quarter with a calf injury and was replaced by Darrion Weems. OLB DeMarcus Ware injured his right elbow in the third quarter and didn’t return. He shared a sack with Derek Wolfe.
FHSU women’s soccer suffers first loss of the season
HAYS, Kan. – The 16th-ranked Fort Hays State women’s soccer team lost for the first time in 2016 on Sunday (Sept. 18), dropping a 1-0 overtime decision to Emporia State in non-conference play. The Tigers’ unbeaten streak to open the year ended at five games, a program best, as they are now 4-1-1 overall on the season. Emporia State improved to 2-2-1 on the year.
It was a defensive battle early as neither team could find rhythm offensively. The Tiger defense was outstanding by holding the Hornets to just one shot in both the first and second halves. The Tigers managed just two shots in the first half before getting off seven shots in the second half.
In overtime the Hornets managed three shots before getting the game winner with 1:38 to play in the period. Emporia State’s Savannah Hallier and Tanna Benefiel used back and forth passing to open up the goal on a break-away situation. Hallier rolled the ball into the low right side of the net to claim the match.
Abbie Flax took the loss in net for FHSU saving four of the five shots that she faced. For the season Flax is 3-1-1. Yadira Rivera moved to 2-2-1 on the season for ESU.
The Tigers have four days off before returning to action on Friday in Topeka, Kan., where they take on Washburn to wrap up non-conference play. Kickoff is set for 6 pm.
Morales drives in four, leads Duffy, Royals over White Sox

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kendrys Morales homered for his 1,000th career hit and drove in four runs, Danny Duffy pitched effectively into the eighth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 10-3 Sunday.
Duffy (12-2) picked up his first victory since Aug. 21. He struck out eight and gave up three runs.
Morales homered in the sixth with Paulo Orlando aboard. Orlando reached base four times — two doubles, a walk and hit by pitch — and scored three runs.
Morales contributed a RBI single in the first and doubled home Eric Hosmer in the fourth.
Hosmer drove in three runs, giving him a career-best 94 RBIs. Whit Merrifield had three hits and two RBIs.
Alex Gordon ended an 0-for-21 drought with his 16th home run, which splashed into the upper right-field fountain.
Todd Frazier hit his 37th homer, a White Sox record for a third baseman.
Jose Quintana (12-11) fell to 1-9 lifetime against the Royals.
Novak makes 4 field goals, helps Texans beat Chiefs
HOUSTON (AP) — DeAndre H
opkins had 113 yards receiving and a touchdown and Nick Novak kicked four field goals, helping the Houston Texans to a 19-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
Novak connected from 32, 24, 31 and 43 yards for the Texans
Cairo Santos made three field goals in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 19-12, but Houston recovered the onside kick with less than a minute left to seal the victory.
The Texans (2-0) showed that they are a much different team than the one that was embarrassed in a 30-0 wild-card playoff loss to the Chiefs (1-1) in January, when quarterback Brian Hoyer had five turnovers.
New quarterback Brock Osweiler did throw two interceptions but the Chiefs had more trouble taking care of the ball, with Houston’s defense setting a franchise record by recovering three fumbles in the first half.
The first came when a high snap sailed over Alex Smith’s head. J.J. Watt shoved him out of the way with one hand and pounced on it, showing he was getting back to his old self after July back surgery.
Osweiler, who finished with 268 yards passing, connected with Hopkins on a 27-yard touchdown pass on the next play to make it 7-0.
Watt continued to shine later in the first quarter when he took Smith down for his first sack this season, forcing the Chiefs to kick a field goal that made it 7-3.
Houston was leading by seven in the second quarter when Spencer Ware fumbled, Kevin Johnson scooped it up for his first career recovery and returned it 52 yards. The Texans couldn’t get their offense going after that and settled for a 24-yard field goal to make it 13-3.
John Simon forced the last fumble of the half on his strip-sack of Smith. It was recovered by Whitney Mercilus. But once again Houston failed to move the ball and Novak’s try for a 57-yard field goal fell short as time expired in the first half.
Marcus Peters intercepted Osweiler at the goal line on Houston’s first possession and picked him off again late in the third quarter.
That led to a 43-yard field goal that cut the lead to 13-6.
A field goal by both teams after that left the Texans up 16-9.
FULLER FLOURISHES
Houston rookie receiver Will Fuller finished with four receptions for 104 yards to become the first rookie in franchise history with consecutive 100-yard receiving games to start his career. The 21st overall pick in this year’s draft had 107 yards receiving in his NFL debut last week.
INJURY REPORT
Houston rookie WR Braxton Miller injured his hamstring in the first half and did not return.
ELITE COMPANY
Watt finished with 1.5 sacks on Sunday to give him 76 sacks in his 82nd career game. He’s the second fastest in NFL history to reach 75 sacks behind Hall of Famer Reggie White who did it in 65 games.
NO, NO, NO
Peters learned that wagging your finger in the face of an opponent like NBA Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo did after blocking a shot is frowned upon on the NFL.
Peters forced an incompletion on a deep ball thrown to Fuller in the second quarter and wagged his finger at him for several seconds. The move earned him a 15-yard penalty for taunting and a warning that a second such penalty would result in an ejection.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
Hopkins and Fuller gave Houston two players with at least 100 yards receiving for the eighth time in franchise history and the first time since 2013.
BRING IT BACK
Kansas City rookie Tyreek Hill had a 105-yard kickoff return for a touchdown negated because of a holding penalty late in the fourth quarter.

Game Highlights
Mezera, who completed 14 of 24 passes for 250 yards, connected on touchdown strikes of 30 and 21 yards to Shaquille Copper before play was stopped with 5:18 to play in the first quarter because of lightning. Mezera then hit Layne Bieberle on a 62-yard TD pass on the first play out of the delay to push the lead to 21-0.
Down 24-10 at the half, the Broncos closed the gap to 27-20 early in the fourth quarter but the FHSU responded with a nine-play scoring drive capped by a 19-yard Mezera touchdown run.
UCO would drive to the Tiger five on their next possession, but a fumble in the endzone was recovered by Rashad Dunnigan. Fort Hays State would then drive all the way to the Bronchos four yard line and run out the clock.
The Tigers amassed 475 yards of total offense including 95 rushing yards from Shaquille Cooper and another 94 from Kenneth Iheme. Cooper also hauled in four passes for 66 yards and the two touchdowns.
Sie Doe led the defense with 13 tackles and recorded the Tigers only sack.
