FHSU men’s soccer knocks off Seattle Pacific; splits west coast trip

SEATTLE – The 18th-ranked Fort Hays State men’s soccer team improved to 3-2-1 on Saturday in a 2-1 win at Seattle Pacific to wrap up the weekend road trip in Washington. The Falcons dropped to 2-2-1 on the season.

Micheal Cole put the Tigers in front 1-0 in the ninth minute on a ball from Maurizio Costa. Costa crossed a ball into the box from the right side that found Cole for his first goal of the season. The assist for Costa, his sixth of the season, leads the MIAA. Moises Peralta extended the Tiger lead at the 38:38 mark when he also recorded his first goal of the season on a 25-yard lob into the upper right corner.

SPU cut the lead in half when Stephen MacDonald recorded his seventh goal of the season on a hard ball to the bottom left corner in the 71st minute. The Tiger defense stepped up in the final 19 minutes and prevented the equalizer to secure the win.

Despite being outshot 19-9 overall and 10-4 in shots on net, the Tigers made the most of their opportunities. Michael Yantz was huge for the Tigers saving nine shots on the way to his second win of the year.

The Tigers return to action next Sunday when they head to North Dakota to take on University of Mary. The match is set for 3:30 pm.

FHSU volleyball improves to 12-0

DENVER, Colo. – The Fort Hays State University volleyball team extended its season-opening winning streak to 12 games with a pair of comfortable victories Saturday at the Johnson & Wales Invitational. The Tigers (12-0) cruised past Haskell Indian Nations University in straight sets before toppling Johnson & Wales on their home floor in four sets.

Fort Hays State was the only school to finish 4-0 in the tournament for the third weekend in a row. Rebekah Spainhour tallied 38 kills on the day to lead the team.

Two of the eight undefeated teams remaining in NCAA Division II will meet up on Tuesday (Sept. 20) when the Tigers open MIAA play at No. 5-ranked Nebraska-Kearney. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Fort Hays State 3, Haskell Indian Nations 0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-22)
The Tigers used an amazing first set propel them to victory over Haskell (5-7) to open the day Saturday morning. FHSU posted an incredibly efficient .533 attack percentage in the opening set, helping the squad hit .390 for the match. Haskell managed to hit at a .117 clip, but had just 25 kills in the match compared to 50 from the Black and Gold.

Rebekah Spainhour led the team with 15 kills and three blocks, hitting .538 after committing just one attack error. Crystal Whitten added 13 kills of her own, giving the pair of seniors three more kills than the entire Lady Indian squad. Seven Tigers contributed four or more digs, with Chandler Hillman pacing the squad with nine. Whitten, Hillman and Ari Jacobsen all managed two service aces. Hannah Wagy handled the setting duties for the majority of the match, throwing up 39 assists.

Fort Hays State connected with 17 kills and just one kill in the opening frame, compiling an astounding .533 hitting percentage. Haskell kept things close until the midway point, never trailing by more than five before closing the gap to three at 13-10 on a Tiger attack error. FHSU then scored 12 of the next 16 points to capture the set, ending on a block by Wagy and Megan Anderson.

The Tigers kept it in cruise control coming out of the break, taking the second set 25-10. Sydney Dixon picked up five kills in the set, including three kills in a span of six rallies to help the Tigers score 11-straight points with Hillman serving. Jacobsen closed out the game with a service ace.

The Lady Indians made things interesting in the third set, leading by as many as three. Whitten opened the set with a kill and two service aces to hand FHSU a quick 3-0 lead. Haskell battled back to take a 14-11 lead with four consecutive points before Spainhour took over. The senior recorded four kills down the stretch to hand the Tigers their three-set victory.

Fort Hays State 3, Johnson & Wales 1 (25-19, 25-13, 22-25, 25-22)
The Tigers wrapped up the weekend with a four-set victory over Johnson & Wales (11-11) Saturday evening. Fort Hays State hit .190 for the match and compiled eight blocks, holding the Wildcats to a .100 attack percentage.

Senior Rebekah Spainhour set a personal-best with 23 kills, recording an efficient .571 attack percentage while adding two solo blocks. Megan Anderson tossed in four total blocks and 10 kills while Crystal Whitten recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 21 kills and 12 digs. Hannah Wagy threw up 55 assists while Ari Jacobsen led the team with 22 digs.

The sides traded the lead numerous times to open the match before Fort Hays State extended a 17-11 lead behind two blocks from Callie Christensen. The Wildcats closed the gap to two, 21-19, prompting Kohler to use a timeout. The Tigers rattled off four-straight points to close out the match, with Whitten recording the final two kills.

The Black and Gold never trailed in the second frame, with Whitten connecting with six kills in the set. The Tigers rattled off six-straight points in the heart of the set to put things effectively out of reach, 16-8. After recording a kill on the opening point, Whitten bookended the set with another kill to clinch the 25-13 victory.

The Wildcats extended the match after taking the third set, 25-22. There were five ties early on in the game before JWU scored five of seven points to extend a four-point lead, 13-9. The Tigers narrowed the gap to one with kill from Sydney Dixon and Spainhour, but the Wildcats bounced back to take the set after scoring the final two points in the frame.

With eight ties scattered through the set, the fourth game was just as competitive as the third. The Wildcats scored five-straight to extend a 13-9 lead before Kohler took a timeout to regroup. The Tigers finally grabbed the lead at 16-15 with a kill from Dixon. With the Tigers trailing 19-18, Spainhour took over down the stretch. The senior recorded kills on five of the last 10 points in the match to hand the Tigers the match.

Vargas returns as Royals top White Sox

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Manager Ned Yost was unsure what to expect from his starting pitcher.

Jarrod Dyson had two hits, scored a run and stole a base in Jason Vargas’ first start in 14 months, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox3-2 on Saturday night to snap a five-game losing streak.

Vargas, who was making his first start in 423 days after having Tommy John surgeryon August 5, 2015, gave up a first-inning run on Melky Cabrera’s RBI single, but retired eight of the last nine batters he faced.

“He was a little better than I expected,” Yost said. “It’s been 14 months since he’s been on a major league mound and his first big league start since coming off Tommy John. I don’t know how you have expectations on anything like that. You just want to go out, feel good and get through it and come off of it healthy, on a good note. I think we accomplished all those things tonight.”

Vargas said his stuff was “very similar” to his six minor league rehab starts.

“There were a couple of times where I got behind in some counts, (but) I think that’s just part of being back out there,” Vargas said. “I felt pretty good about where I was able to throw the ball and how it went.”

Vargas was pulled after 52 pitches and three innings. Dillon Gee (7-8) replaced Vargas and held the White Sox to one run and five hits over 4 1/3 innings.

“Today is about Vargy coming back from TJ (Tommy John surgery),” Gee said. “That’s a big deal for him to come back and get a start again and come back healthy from that surgery. He did a great job. I just wanted to come in and hold it there.”

Dyson, who is 10 for 15 off White Sox starter Miguel Gonzalez (4-7), singled to lead off the first, advanced to second on Whit Merrifield’s bunt single, stole second and scored on Kendrys Morales’ sacrifice fly.

Dyson, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games, also singled in the Royals’ two-run fifth. Hunter Dozier, who was making his second major league start, and Eric Hosmer delivered run-producing singles in the inning, which Alcides Escobar opened with a triple.

“He got in a bind there,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of Gonzalez’s fifth inning. “I thought he got out of some trouble. It could have been worse. I thought he pitched his way out of it and they ended up getting two.”

Avisail Garcia’s double, which struck the third base bag, scored Jose Abreu in the eighth for the final White Sox run. The White Sox went 2 for 9 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight runners.

“We had opportunities,” Ventura said. “We hit the ball pretty good, got some guys on base, just couldn’t cash them in.”

Wade Davis worked a flawless ninth for his 25th save in 28 chances.

MILESTONE REACHED

Yost picked up his 1,000th career victory as a manager. He is the 62nd manager in big league history to reach that total. “You’re 62 years old. I don’t want to go home and drop dead of a heart attack at 999,” Yost said and laughed. “I’d like to at least try to get to a thousand and then I can go any time after that.”

WANG OUT

The Royals designated RHP Chien-Ming Wang, who went 6-0 with a 4.22 ERA in 32 bullpen outings, for assignment. Wang won 19 games in back-to-back seasons, 2006-07 with the Yankees, before injuries derailed his career.

TRAINER’S ROOM

White Sox: DH Justin Morneau has not played since Monday, when he hurt his neck swinging against the Indians. “Old man neck,” Morneau said. “I just have to be patient with it.” Morneau said if his neck keeps improving he would take some swings Sunday and “maybe available Monday would be great.” … IF Tyler Saladino did not play after injuring his left calf Friday. “Just a little tweak, so he’s getting treatment,” Ventura said.

UP NEXT

White Sox: LHP Jose Quintana is 0-2 with a 3.32 ERA in three starts against the Royals this season.

Royals: LHP Danny Duffy is 0-1 with three no-decisions since an Aug. 21 victory over Minnesota.

Kansas State rolls to easy victory over Florida Atlantic

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Winston Dimel ran for four first-half touchdowns, Kansas State took advantage of four Florida Atlantic turnovers and the Wildcats rolled to a 63-7 victory in their home opener Saturday.

Jesse Ertz added 117 yards passing with a touchdown, and Dominique Heath returned a punt 75 yards for another score, as the Wildcats (1-1) bounced back from their season-opening loss at Stanford.

Kansas State scored on its first four possessions, including a pair of one-play drives set up by Florida Atlantic (1-2) turnovers, and cruised to a 42-0 lead by halftime. Backup quarterbacks Alex Delton and Joe Hubener completed the route with touchdown runs in the fourth quarter.

Greg Howell had a touchdown run earlier in the fourth quarter for the Owls.

Jason Driskel threw for 125 yards, but the Florida Atlantic quarterback also tossed two interceptions and lost two fumbles deep in his own territory. Kansas State turned those turnovers into 21 points.

The Wildcats were playing their latest scheduled home opener since 1992, and also christening the most recent renovation to Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The $15 million project to fully enclose the lower bowl provided new space for the marching band and the visiting Owls with plush new locker rooms.

THE TAKEAWAY

FLORIDA ATLANTIC: Owls coach Charlie Partridge said this week that he is trying to emulate the way Snyder built his program. But he clearly has a long way to go. The Owls are coming off back-to-back three-win seasons, and could have a hard time getting to that mark if they play like they did Saturday.

KANSAS STATE: The Wildcats cleaned up a lot of the issues that popped up in their loss to Stanford, and get another chance to clean up the penalties against Missouri State next weekend. Things get tougher after that with a visit to West Virginia to open the Big 12 schedule.

UP NEXT

FLORIDA ATLANTIC: The Owls return home to play Ball State next Saturday night.

KANSAS STATE: The Wildcats wrap non-conference play against the Bears on Saturday night.

Memphis builds early lead, coasts past Kansas

By CLAY BAILEY
Associated Press

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Riley Ferguson threw for 189 yards and two touchdowns and Jake Elliot kicked a trio of field goals — including a 50-yarder — as Memphis built an early lead and coasted to a 43-7 victory over Kansas on Saturday.

Ferguson completed 15 of 24 passes for Memphis (2-0), the bulk of his passing yards coming on an 84-yard completion to Anthony Miller for the game’s first score. In addition to his 50-yarder, Elliot converted kicks of 41 and 42 yards.

The Jayhawks (1-2) struggled offensively throughout the game, although they did end with 314 yards total offense. Many times when Kansas was able to move the ball, the momentum was stalled by one of the Jayhawks’ six turnovers in the game, including a 61-yard interception return for a touchdown by Memphis defensive tackle Jonathan Wilson. Wilson’s return late in the second quarter gave Memphis a 33-7 lead at the break.

The Jayhawks never came close to threatening the Tigers in the second half.

TAKEAWAYS:

KANSAS: The Jayhawks again struggled to open the game. Kansas, which let Ohio build a 22-0 start last week game, was again fighting uphill Saturday. Memphis held a 19-0 lead before carrying its 33-7 advantage into halftime.

MEMPHIS: The Tigers, who managed only 110 yards on the ground in the season-opener against Southeast Missouri State, managed 205 rushing yards on Saturday, 52 of which came on a sweep from wideout Anthony Miller on the second play from scrimmage.

UP NEXT:

KANSAS: The Jayhawks have a bye next week before returning to the road to face Texas Tech on Sept. 29. It will be the first Thursday game for the Jayhawks since a 59-7 loss to Kansas State on Oct. 14, 2010.

MEMPHIS: The Tigers continue a homestand next week facing Bowling Green. Memphis won at Bowling Green 44-41 last season.

Smith Center routs TMP

By Jeremy McGuire
Hays Post

SMITH CENTER, KS-Smith Center scored touchdowns on their first six possessions and cruised to a 62-0 shutout of the TMP Monarchs on Friday night at Hubbard Stadium in Smith Center.  The Redmen defense was impressive as well, holding TMP to 115 yards of total offense and never allowed the Monarchs inside the 30 yard line.  Smith Center racked up 414 yards of offense as well.

Kaden Meitler ran for 75 yards and three scores while Trace Haven came off of the bench to rush for 81 yards on five carries and two touchdowns.  One bright spot for TMP was freshman quarterback Carson Jacobs coming off of the bench late in the fourth quarter to complete three pass for 37 yards.  Smith Center is now 1-2 on the year and will travel to Norton on Friday.  TMP drops to 0-3 and will host Plainville for their homecoming matchup this Friday.

White Sox rally to hand Royals fifth straight loss

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chris Sale pitched his American League-leading sixth complete-game to pick up his 16th win, Carlos Sanchez hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-4 Friday night.

Sanchez had struck out in his first three at-bats before hitting a pitch frm Kelvin Herrera out to right with J.D. Shuck and Avisail Garcia aboard. It was Sanchez’s first home run since last Sept. 21 at Detroit.

Todd Frazier doubled with one out and scored on Alex Avila’s single for the first run of the inning.

Sale (16-8), 1-6 in his previous 11 starts, limited the Royals to four runs, three earned, while striking out 10 and walking one.

Kansas City has lost five straight and will need a miracle to return to postseason after winning the past two American League championships.

Herrera (2-5) blew his third save in 14 chances.

HAYS, Kan. – The 16th-ranked Fort Hays State women’s soccer team remained undefeated on Friday by playing to a 1-1 draw with Nebraska-Kearney. The Tigers are now 4-0-1 overall, still the best start in program history. Nebraska-Kearney is now 2-2-1.

Thayla Dwyer  gave the Tigers the lead in the first half when she picked up her fourth goal of the season in the eighth minute. Dani Harris crossed the ball from the far side of the field. Dwyer took possession of the pass and beat the keeper to the lower left of the goal.

UNK struck late in the first half to even the score. At the 44:42 mark, Marika Van Brocklin took control of a loose ball then sent a long shot from about forty yards out. Tiger keeper Abbie Flax was playing up on the play and sprawled backwards to deflect the shot but wasn’t able to get enough of the ball as it fell into the net.

From that point, neither team could find the winning goal in the final 65 minutes of play. Both teams finished with just nine shot attempts for the match.

Flax recorded four saves on the night and is now 3-0-1 on the season. Allie Prososki of Nebraska-Kearney moved to 2-1-1.

The Tigers are back in action once more on Sunday when they welcome Emporia State to Hays for an afternoon non-conference game. The match is set for 2 pm.

Hays falls to Liberal in home opener

The Hays High had to wait until week three of the football season to play their first home game. On a picture perfect Friday night the Indians hosted the Liberal Redskins at Lewis Field Stadium.

Hays took their first drive of the game to the end zone over ten plays capped by a Hunter Brown five yard run. Liberal scored immediately when freshman Syris Dunlap took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a tie ball game.

The rest of the first half was scoreless and Liberal punted the ball on three straight possessions of three plays. Hays drove into Liberal territory on their next three possessions but couldn’t convert on fourth down each time at the 36 yard line.

The Hays defense held Liberal to zero yards at half time. Hays compiled 187 yards, but remained tied with the Redskins 7-7.a

Hays looked like they would take the lead traveling inside the Redskin’s 10 yard but fumbled the ball away on third down after 16 plays. Liberal took over at their own nine yard line and went backwards a yard on the next two plays. Liberal though converted on 3rd and 12 and later on 3rd and 5. Liberal then busted out the longest play on offense with a 67 yard run by Burciaga to give Liberal a 21-13 lead.

Page served to open the second set, with Megan Anderson helping FHSU extend a 5-0 lead with consecutive kills. The teams traded points for much of the game before Rollman brought things to a close with a pair of service aces during another five-point scoring rally for the FHSU Tigers.

Megan Alexander and Megan Anderson took over in the final set, contributing nine of FHSU’s 12 kills in the frame. The two hit a combined .571 while the rest of the team struggled to a -.157 attack percentage. A poor hitting performance from the CCC Tigers helped Kurt Kohler’s squad remain in control throughout the set, which ultimately came to a close with a CCC bad set following an ace from Payne.

Fort Hays State 3, Graceland 0 (25-7, 25-14, 27-25)
The Tigers did not allow a five-plus hour break bother them, coming out against Graceland on fire. FHSU allowed just seven points in the first set against the Yellowjackets. FHSU compiled a .252 attack percentage in the match, holding GU to a -.041 effort on the day.

Megan Anderson once again led the team with 10 kills, adding six total blocks and three digs to cap off an incredible day on the court. Crystal Whitten added nine kills and 13 digs, one off the team-high in both categories. Callie Christensen contributed five block assists and one kill with Rebekah Spainhour throwing in seven kills and four total blocks (three solo).

The Tigers dominated in every facet of the game in the opening set, recording six total blocks to hold Graceland to an abysmal -.220 attack percentage. FHSU was incredibly efficient on offense, totaling 10 kills and just one attack error to hit at a .310 clip in the set. Anderson and Christensen combined for five blocks in the set, with Anderson adding another solo block and four kills. The Tigers scored the first seven points in the set, and the rout was on. FHSU scored 13 of the final 15 points in the set, with FHSU forcing eight Yellowjacket attack errors during the run.

After Fort Hays State took the second set comfortably, 25-14, the Yellowjackets battled back to make the third frame interesting. Graceland took a three-point lead at 8-5, prompting Kohler to use a timeout. The teams traded points until a Spainhour solo block tied the score at 14. The Tigers trailed as late as 23-22 before Alexander threw down a kill coming out of a timeout to level things at 23. Whitten added a kill to hand FHSU a serve on match point, but Graceland stayed alive with a kill. Another solo block from Spainhour helped the Tigers stay alive before a Yellowjacket error sealed the FHSU victory.
