FHSU men’s soccer falls at Western Washington

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The 18th-ranked Fort Hays State men’s soccer team dropped to 2-2-1 overall after suffering a 1-0 loss at Western Washington on Thursday (Sept. 15). The Vikings improved to 3-1-1 on the season.

The lone goal in the match came in the 24th minute from Western Washington’s Jeremiah Lee. Ibra Drame found Lee with a pass around 20 yards out and Lee sent a bending shot into the upper left corner of the net.

Fort Hays State outshot Western Washington 13-11 on the night but lacked efficiency as only one of those shots was on net. Michael Yantz took the loss between the pipes for FHSU, saving two of the three shots on goal from the Vikings.

The Tigers look to rebound as their west coast trip continues on Saturday (Sept. 17) at Seattle Pacific University. The match is set for 9 pm (central time).

Alonso, Semien hit 2-run doubles; A’s top Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yonder Alonso and Marcus Semien hit two-run doubles as the Oakland Athletics beat Kansas City 8-0 for the third straight game on Wednesday night to further ruin the Royals’ postseason chances.

The 2015 World Series champion Royals are five games out in the American League wild card with 17 games left and would have to climb over five teams.

A’s rookie left-hander Sean Manaea (5-9) picked up his first career road victory, retiring 13 of the final 14 batters he faced in five scoreless innings, striking out five and walking one. Manaea, who had not pitched since Aug. 29 when he left in the fourth inning with a strained left rhomboid, was removed after 67 pitches. The A’s acquired Manaea from the Royals in July 2015 as part of the Ben Zobrist trade.

Alonso’s broken-bat double in the first scored Danny Valencia and Stephen Vogt.

Chiefs release 3rd-round pick KeiVarae Russell

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have released third-round pick KeiVarae Russell and brought back linebacker Dezman Moses in a surprise move just one week into the regular season.

Russell, a cornerback, had been passed over by sixth-round pick D.J. White and recent acquisition Kenneth Acker on the depth chart. Russell was the Chiefs’ second player chosen in the April draft.

The move Wednesday was likely made to shore up special teams, though it was unexpected given the high draft pick the Chiefs used on the former Notre Dame standout.

Moses was cut last week when the Chiefs needed to reach the NFL’s 53-man roster limit.

FHSU men’s golf opens season at UNK Invite

AXTELL, Neb. – The Fort Hays State University men’s golf team competed for the first time of the year this week at the UNK Invitational. The tournament was held at Awarii Dunes Country Club, an Irish-inspired links course in the sandy, rolling hills of southern Nebraska. The event, the first of four MIAA designated events that will decide the conference champion, concluded after 36 holes due to potential weather concerns.

The field fought through a wide variety of conditions on Monday, ranging from clear and calm wind in the morning, to intermittent showers in the afternoon and ultimately cold with gale-force winds over the last few hours. The competition concluded with the final five holes of the second round on a windy and chilly Tuesday morning.

The Tigers recorded a team score of 650 (328-322) to finish 20th overall and 11th in the MIAA standings. Dalton Ayres led FHSU with a two-round total of nine-over 153 (79-74), finishing in a tie for 49th. The junior transfer jumped 29 spots between rounds with his second round two-over 74, the sixth-largest jump in the 105 individual field.

Freshmen Marcus Willey (83-81) and Colton Bobek (82-82) both finished with a score of plus-20 164. Isaiah Grover (84-85-169) and Jake Weller (84-88-172) rounded out the scoring for FHSU.

The team will return to action in two weeks when it heads to Monkey, Island, Okla. for the MSSU Fall Invitational at Shangri-La Country Club. The first two rounds are scheduled for Monday, Sept. 26 before the final round takes off Tuesday.
