Chiefs lose backup QB Henne to broken ankle, sign Moore

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs lost backup quarterback Chad Henne to a fractured ankle in their penultimate preseason game, and they signed veteran Matt Moore on Monday to provide depth behind starter Patrick Mahomes.

Henne will have surgery on the ankle he broke during Saturday night’s game against San Francisco.

The Chiefs have two other quarterbacks on their roster in Chase Litton and Kyle Shurmur, but neither has distinguished himself in the preseason. The two were competing for a No. 3 job behind Mahomes and Henne, with Shurmur appearing to have the edge heading into Thursday night’s game in Green Bay.

The 35-year-old Moore sat out last season after playing 10 seasons with the Dolphins and Panthers. He started 30 games and threw 45 touchdown passes with 36 interceptions.

Broncos cut vets Kerr, Watson, free up $3.5M in cap space

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – The Denver Broncos cut a pair of veterans on Monday, releasing sixth-year defensive lineman Zach Kerr and 10th-year outside linebacker Dekoda Watson and freeing up about $3.5 million in salary cap space.

Kerr played the last two seasons in Denver after a three-year stint in Indianapolis. He played in all 16 games last season and collected 33 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks and broke up a pass.

The Broncos acquired Watson during a draft weekend trade from the San Francisco 49ers. He had played in Denver in 2016 and also has played for the Buccaneers, Jaguars, Cowboys and Patriots.

Kerr was due a $1.5 million salary this season with a cap hit of just over $2 million. Watson’s salary and cap hit were both $1.55 million.

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

After spending the last four seasons on the Fort Hays State basketball court, Kyler Kinnamon is taking a shot at college football.

He said the thought of playing football entered his mind last fall while watching his younger brother Jace play at McPherson High School.

“I just was watching him and (realized), man, I really miss that a lot” he said following the Tigers scrimmage on Thursday. “I did a little bit of research and figured out a way that you get an extra semester or two of eligibility and said, ‘Heck, I might as well if I don’t have anything else to do.’ ”

Kinnamon was the Tigers starting point guard the last three seasons and played in 120 games over his four years. He finished with the fourth most assists in school history and was named honorable mention All-MIAA following his senior season.

In addition to being an All-State basketball player, Kinnamon was a standout on the football field at MHS, where he played quarterback, wide receiver, running back and defensive back. When he graduated in 2015, he held the school’s single-season record for rushing yards (1,662) and was second in Bullpup history in career passing yards (4,354).

Kinnamon

Kinnamon said it’s been an adjustment making the move from the basketball court to the football field.

“It’s a lot more physical out here. You’re out in the sun a lot, practices are a lot longer, you’re dealing with the elements,” he said. “It’s been really fun, and I love these guys. I’m having a blast with it.”

Kinnamon joins an already deep receiving corps that returns starters Harley Hazlett, Layne Bieberle and Andrew Jay as well as Dandre Reed and Manny Ramsey, who also saw significant playing time a year ago.

“They’ve been incredible in helping me out. If I’m lined up wrong, Coach McCray helps me out” Kinnamon said. “We’re in the film room every single day, and they’ve all been awesome and supportive.”

Royals salvage series finale with Cleveland

CLEVELAND (AP) – Ryan O’Hearn led off the 10th inning with his second homer of the game, sending the Kansas City Royals to a wild 9-8 win Sunday over the Cleveland Indians, whose playoff hopes were rocked by losing third baseman Jose Ramirez to a broken right hand.

The Indians tied it in the ninth against Ian Kennedy (1-2) on a solo homer by Francisco Lindor and Franmil Reyes’ stunning three-run shot with two outs.

O’Hearn hit a 2-2 pitch from Nick Goody (3-1) over the right field wall as the Royals salvaged a back-and-forth series finale to snap a four-game losing streak. O’Hearn also homered in the third off Indians starter Shane Bieber.

Royals reliever Jorge Lopez worked the 10th for his first major league save.

Losing the game was secondary to the Indians, who will be without Ramirez for their playoff push. The two-time All-Star will undergo surgery Monday in New York to repair a fractured hamate bone, and the club won’t know his recovery time until after the procedure.

However, Ramirez, who awakened from a puzzling, early-season offensive slump in time to propel the Indians back into postseason contention, won’t be able to help as his teammates try to catch first-place Minnesota in the AL Central or win a wild-card spot.

Trailing by four runs and down to their final strike, the Indians tied it against Kennedy.

Lindor homered with one out before Kennedy walked Carlos Santana with two outs and gave up a single to Yasiel Puig.

Kennedy’s wild pitch moved the runners up and Reyes, whose homer leading off the eighth pulled Cleveland to 8-4, brought them home with a 423-foot shot to left, rewarding Indians fans who hung around after the team fell behind 8-3 in the eighth.

Kansas City had busted open a 3-3 game with a five-run eighth, triggered by shortstop Lindor’s error and highlighted by Jorge Soler’s two-run homer – a 437-foot drive.

Kevin Plawecki hit a two-run homer for Cleveland. The Indians came in 2 1/2 games out in the division and clinging to a half-game lead in the wild-card race.

Bieber shook off a wobbly first few innings and stuck around for seven. After allowing the homer to O’Hearn in the third, the All-Star Game MVP retired his final 13 batters, recording seven of his eight strikeouts in that span.

Rookie infielder Yu Chang stepped in for Ramirez and got his first two major league hits.

Chang made an immediate impact after being recalled from Triple-A Columbus when the Indians put Ramirez on the injured list.

He opened the seventh with a triple off Royals reliever Scott Barlow. The drive caromed at an odd angle off the center field wall, and for a moment it appeared Chang might have a chance for an inside-the-park homer before he was held at third by coach Mike Sarbaugh.

As he pulled into the bag, Chang was met with cries of “Yuuuuu” from Indians fans still coming to grips with the stunning loss of Ramirez – the latest obstacle for the three-time defending AL Central champions who have had numerous major injuries in 2019.

Royals starter Eric Skoglund was sharp in his season debut, allowing only two hits in five innings. The left-hander was suspended for the first 80 games for violating Major League Baseball’s drug prevention and treatment program.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: SS Adalberto Mondesi (dislocated left shoulder) has played six games on a minor league rehab assignment, but no timetable has been set for his return. He was injured diving for a foul ball on July 16.

Indians: RHP Carlos Carrasco was scheduled to pitch in relief for Triple-A Columbus as he continues his comeback after being diagnosed with leukemia. Carrasco could potentially join Cleveland’s bullpen in the next few weeks.

UP NEXT

Royals: Open a 10-game homestand, their longest of the season, with RHP Brad Keller (7-13, 3.95 ERA) on the mound against Oakland.

Indians: Following an off day, RHP Adam Plutko (5-3, 4.54) starts the opener of a three-game series Tuesday in Detroit against Spencer Turnbull (3-12, 4.05).

Wolford hits Greene for TD in Rams win over Broncos

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Brandon Allen passed for 162 yards, and Jalen Greene caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from John Wolford with 12:38 to play in the Los Angeles Rams’ 10-6 preseason victory over the Denver Broncos on Saturday night.

Both coaches sat nearly all of their starters for the final NFL preseason game at the 96-year-old Coliseum, and neither team managed a touchdown before Wolford led a 52-yard drive spanning the final two quarters and capped it with a sharp pass to Greene.

Wolford, who went 6 of 12 for 64 yards, is competing for the Rams’ No. 3 quarterback spot with Allen, who had the job last season. Allen went 12 of 19 and mostly looked sharp while Jared Goff and backup Blake Bortles watched from the sideline.

Almost every Rams player expected to make a significant contribution this season skipped this game in keeping with coach Sean McVay’s total disinterest in risking his starters’ health for meaningless exhibitions. McVay also followed the strategy last August, and the Rams matched the NFL’s best regular-season record at 13-3 before reaching their first Super Bowl in 17 years.

Kevin Hogan went 8 of 12 for 69 yards in the Broncos’ fourth of five preseason games.

Hogan and undrafted rookie Brett Rypien ran the Broncos’ offense with rookie Drew Lock sidelined by a sprained thumb on his throwing hand. Hogan is expected to back up Joe Flacco this season.

Rypien went 14 of 23 for 80 yards with an interception in his first preseason action since the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 1. He led the Broncos to the Rams 25 in the final minutes, but Los Angeles stopped them on downs with 1:08 to play.

BIG TACKLE

Kieshawn Bierria started for the Broncos as an inside linebacker, and his bid for playing time this season got a boost when he made a huge defensive play in the third quarter. Bierria wrapped up Rams tight end Johnny Mundt at the goal line and forced him out of bounds before Mundt could get his short reception over the goal line on fourth down.

BUTT BACK

Denver tight end Jake Butt had two catches for 17 yards while playing for the first time since the third game of last season, when he tore a knee ligament and required his third knee surgery. Butt also missed the entire 2017 season due to knee problems after the Broncos chose him in the fifth round out of Michigan, but his continued health could be a boost for an offense that likes to use tight ends.

NOT SPECIAL

Most of the Rams’ few remaining positional competitions revolve around the players’ roles on special teams, and those weren’t all great: Los Angeles committed penalties on each of its first two punt returns.

NEXT UP

Broncos: Finish their extra-long preseason by hosting the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday.

Rams: Rest their starters again when they visit the Houston Texans on Thursday.

Garoppolo, Mahomes both sharp as 49ers top Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was impressive in his return to Arrowhead Stadium, and Chiefs counterpart Patrick Mahomes may have been even better, as the 49ers beat Kansas City 27-17 in their third preseason game Saturday night.

Garoppolo was 14 of 20 for 188 yards while playing the entire first half in a much better showing than his preseason debut against Denver last week. Garoppolo led the 49ers deep into Kansas City territory four times, throwing a nice TD pass to Matt Breida and getting two field goals from Robbie Gould.

It was an encouraging night for Garoppolo on another front: He was able to put to rest any lingering memories from last season, when he tore up his knee during a Week 3 game in Kansas City.

Mahomes finished 8 of 10 for 126 yards, highlighted by a 62-yard catch-and-run to Damien Williams in which the Chiefs’ injury-prone running back raced right by the woebegone linebacker covering him.

Mahomes was so sharp in what was likely his final tuneup before the regular season that the league MVP even completed his first incompletion – it was just caught out of bounds. His only other misfire was a drop by backup tight end Blake Bell before coach Andy Reid gave Mahomes a visor to wear.

Garoppolo kept his helmet on, leading a two-minute drill that gave the 49ers a go-ahead field goal.

The 49ers clung to that 13-10 halftime advantage until Chiefs backup quarterback Kyle Shurmur led a 13-play, 97-yard drive that took up most of the third quarter. Byron Pringle capped it with a short TD run as the second-year pro tries to make the Chiefs as an extra wide receiver.

The 49ers answered with a 12-play drive. Nick Mullens, who is battling C.J. Beathard for their backup quarterback job, led the way and Jeff Wilson Jr. finished it with a TD run.

Wilson put the game away with another touchdown run with 3:41 to go.

STAR TIGHT ENDS ARE QUIET

The 49ers’ George Kittle broke Travis Kelce’s season yardage record for tight ends within hours of him setting it during Week 17 last season. But neither dented the stat sheet Saturday night. Kittle didn’t play with a bothersome calf while Kelce did not have a catch for Kansas City.

SITTING OUT

Along with Kittle, the 49ers rested: CBs Jason Verrett (ankle), K’Waun Williams (knee) and Tim Harris; FS Adrian Colbert (hamstring); RB Jerick McKinnon (knee); DLs Dee Ford (knee), Nick Bosa (ankle) and Jullian Taylor (back); and WR Trent Taylor (foot).

The Chiefs sat SS Tyrann Mathieu (shoulder, CB Michael Hunter (groin) and WR Gehrig Dieter (back).

INJURIES

Chiefs LB Darron Lee left with a chest injury. … CB Bashaud Breeland hurt his left shoulder while making a tackle along the sideline in the first half, though he eventually returned to the game.

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY

The Chiefs’ game last week in Pittsburgh was delayed about an hour by lightning. Rain fell off and on Saturday night, too, though the game continued without any delays.

UP NEXT

49ers: Wrap their preseason against the Chargers on Thursday night.

Chiefs: Visit Green Bay for their preseason finale Thursday night.

TMP volleyball hosts preseason scrimmage

With a little more than two weeks to go before the start of the 2019 season the TMP-Marian volleyball team took part in a preseason scrimmage Friday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

TMP finished 20-16 last season and is two years removed from claiming their first state title in program history.

Coach Natausha Dreher said Friday they have 22 girls out for volleyball this season. They have several players back from last year’s team that saw varsity action.

Among those is sophomore Emilee Lane. She was one of three unanimous first-team All Mid-Continent League selections last season.

Dreher said they are still working on communication and that Friday’s action was another step in the right direction.

“I feel like this was a good building block and they know what they want to work on and tomorrow morning when we step into practice they know that that was the base and we build from there,” Dreher said.

The varsity team will open their season on Aug. 31 at the Hays High Invitational while the C-team will travel to Phillipsburg for a tournament.

Tigers hold second scrimmage of preseason camp

The Fort Hays State football team wrapped up their second week of preseason camp with their second of two scheduled scrimmages Thursday afternoon at Lewis Field.

Head coach Chris Brown visited with the media afterwards and said he was pleased with both sides of the ball.

The Tigers open the 2019 season in less than two weeks (September 5th) at Central Missouri.

Injured reserve is a possibility for Broncos rookie QB Lock

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – Drew Lock says he’s not sure when his sprained right thumb will allow him to throw a football again and Broncos coach Vic Fangio wouldn’t rule out placing the rookie QB on injured reserve to start the season.

Lock was injured in Denver’s preseason loss to the 49ers on Monday night when he was chased from the pocket and tripped up.

Although X-rays were negative, Lock was diagnosed with a serious sprain that will force him to miss the rest of the preseason and might even sideline him into the regular season.

Fangio called it “a pretty serious injury for a quarterback,” adding the team’s not sure of a timetable for his return. Fangio said IR was a possibility “if we don’t think he could play for a while.”

Lock said he’s never had a sprain this bad and declined to venture a guess as to how long he’ll be out.

QB Kevin Hogan will start Saturday night against the Rams and rookie Brett Rypien will finish up.

Holt, Red Sox top Royals 5-4 in 10th to cap suspended game

BOSTON (AP) – Brock Holt hit an RBI single with one out in the 10th inning as the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 on Thursday to complete the weather-suspended game that began Aug. 7.

The original contest was halted after a 1 hour, 49 minute-rain delay early on Aug. 8 with the score tied 4-4 and nobody out in the top of the 10th inning. Royals catcher Meibrys Viloria was facing a 2-1 count against Red Sox reliever Josh Taylor.

Play resumed 14 days, 14 hours and 18 minutes later at 1:05 p.m. when Taylor (1-1) lobbed a ball to Nick Dini, who pinch hit for Viloria and lined out to first base.

Ryan O’Hearn struck out and pinch hitter Bubba Starling grounded out to end the Royals’ inning. Starling took the spot of nine-hole hitter Billy Hamilton, who went 2 for 4 with a strikeout on Aug. 8 but was designated for assignment on Aug. 16.

Christian Vazquez doubled to center field after Andrew Benintendi struck out looking to lead off Boston’s 10th. Richard Lovelady (0-3) intentionally walked pinch hitter Sam Travis before Holt singled on a line drive to left field to score Chris Owings, who was pinch running for Vazquez.

The official time of game was 3:48, with only 12 minutes being played Thursday.

Viloria’s two-run single in the third inning on Aug. 7 gave Kansas City a 2-0 lead. J.D. Martinez tied it with a two-run homer in the fourth and Xander Bogaerts’ two-run double made it 4-2 in the fifth.

Whit Merrifield singled in a run in the sixth and Nicky Lopez doubled in the seventh to knot the score at 4. Play was eventually stopped at 10:47 p.m. and the game was officially suspended at 12:36 a.m.

Before Thursday, Boston’s most recent suspended game was April 16, 2010, at home against Tampa Bay and resumed the following day. Kansas City’s last suspended game, an Aug. 31, 2014, home contest versus Cleveland, was completed on Sept. 22, 2014.

FHSU men’s soccer tops GAC preseason poll

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – After winning conference championships each of the last two seasons, the Fort Hays State men’s soccer team has been picked to make it three straight as they sit atop the 2019 GAC Men’s Soccer Preseason Poll, released Thursday (August 22) by the league office. The poll is comprised of ballots from head coaches of all eight programs, with coaches ranking the other seven teams in the league.

Fort Hays State, ranked No. 3 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25, picked up five of seven possible first-place votes, earning 40 points in the balloting process. Northeastern State came in just behind the Tigers, picking up 39 points and three first-place votes. Rogers State enters the year ranked third in the league with Newman slotted fourth. Defending GAC champion Ouachita Baptist is listed fifth in the preseason poll, just in front of 2018 regular season GAC champion Harding. Southern Nazarene and Oklahoma Baptist round out the poll in seventh and eighth, respectively.

The Tigers are coming off the program’s first trip to the national semifinals in 2018. It was the seventh-straight year FHSU reached the NCAA Division II Championship tournament, the second-longest active streak in the nation. Fort Hays State returns five All-Conference performers and three All-Region athletes from last year’s team that finished the year 17-2-2. Included in that list is Santiago Agudelo, the reigning D2CCA National Player of the Year. Agudelo etched his name up and down the record books in his junior campaign, scoring 26 goals alongside six assists. Other returning All-Region honorees include defender Sergio Villalba and midfielder Moritz Walther.

The new season will be the first year under new head coach Gerry Cleary, announced as the second head coach in program history in early 2019. Cleary has earned three national titles as a head coach, winning two NAIA championships with the Martin Methodist women’s program before leading the Martin Methodist men’s squad to the 2013 national title.

After turning in the first perfect MIAA record in history (8-0-0), the Tigers will compete in the Great American Conference beginning in 2019. The MIAA and GAC announced a sport sponsorship partnership last year in which the MIAA will oversee men’s tennis competition while the GAC administers men’s soccer. The Tigers will play a 14-game double round-robin conference schedule against the other seven programs.

The Tigers open the year at home against perennial power Rockhurst on Thursday, September 5 at 7 p.m., the first of eight regular season home matches.

2019 GAC Men’s Soccer Preseason Poll
1. Fort Hays State (5 1st-place votes) – 40 points
2. Northeastern State (3) – 39 points
3. Rogers State – 32 points
4. Newman – 22 points
5. Ouachita Baptist – 21 points
6. Harding – 20 points

Jonathan Villar opened the scoring with a two-run shot, while Hanser Alberto put the game away with a three-run blast in the sixth.

Whit Merrifield homered leading off the third for Kansas City. The 2016 Cincinnati Reds owned the previous record for home runs allowed in a season, but the Orioles have 35 games to surpass them.
