AP source: Chiefs safety Berry reporting to camp Sunday

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A person familiar with Eric Berry’s plans tells The Associated Press that the All-Pro safety will report to practice Sunday, giving him one preseason game to prepare for the season.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Friday because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly.

Berry was given the franchise tag early in the offseason but has not signed the deal, which means he could skip all of training camp without being fined. Once he signs the one-year contract, he will make just over $10.8 million, making him the league’s highest-paid safety.

The Chiefs had hoped to sign Berry to a long-term deal in the offseason, but the two sides were never close to reaching an agreement by the July 15 deadline.

Escobar homers for surging Royals in win over Marlins

By CHRISTOPHER STOCK
Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) — Alcides Escobar homered and drove in two runs to lead the surging Kansas City Royals past the Miami Marlins 5-2 on Thursday night.

Salvador Perez and Kendrys Morales also drove in runs for the Royals as the defending World Series champions have won 15 of 18 to pull within four games of the second AL wild card spot.

Kansas City starter Edison Volquez (10-10) pitched five innings and allowed two runs, both unearned, and three hits.

The Royals’ bullpen, which has been a successful formula for the reigning two-time AL pennant winners, pitched four scoreless innings to push their franchise-record scoreless streak to 38 2/3 innings — the best in the majors since 2002-03 when San Francisco tossed 39 1/3 straight.

Kelvin Herrera pitched a flawless ninth for his ninth save in 11 chances.

Tom Koehler (9-9) allowed four runs, three earned, and seven hits in six innings for the Marlins.

Notable additions to the squad include junior transfer Oscar Carmona, a member of the 2015 NJCAA National Champion Iowa Central Tritons, and freshman Kaleb Crum, who broke Tiger great Cory Keehn’s freshman record at the team’s annual time trial.

The Tigers will to host the 30th Annual FHSU Alumni Run on Saturday, August 27 at the Sand Plum Nature Trail in Victoria, Kan. The race will begin at 9:30 a.m.

FHSU women’s cross country picked second in preseason MIAA poll

FHSU Sports Information

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women’s cross country team has been ranked in the 2016 MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, released Thursday (Aug. 25) by the conference office.

The Tigers were listed atop four ballots, tied for the most first-place votes, earning 108 total points. Missouri Southern was picked to finish first in the league, also earning four first-place votes en route to 111 total points. Defending conference champion Southwest Baptist was picked to finish third, receiving three first-place selections, with Pittsburg State rounding out the top four and garnering the final top vote. The top four teams in the poll are separated by just 10 points.

After finishing fourth at the MIAA Championships in 2014, the Tigers earned a spot in the top-three in 2015, the highest finish in program history. Head coach Jason McCullough thinks this year’s team has a chance to climb in the standings once again, saying one of the team’s goals this season is to be one of the top two teams in the league.

This year’s team certainly has the credentials to attain that goal with four All-MIAA performers returning from a year ago. Included in that pack are junior Shea Bonine, senior Micki Krzesinski, junior Chelsea Jackson and sophomore Sophie Dalmasso, who all finished in the top-five for FHSU in each meet last season. Bonine added All-Region honors a year ago, finishing 25th at the Central Region Championships. Both Krzesinski and Jackson took home All-Conference honors for the second time after finishing in the top-20 at the league meet in 2014.

Also returning this season will be junior Amanda Morgan, sophomore Yessenia Gonzales and junior Keanu Bradley, who all finished in the top-seven for the Tigers at multiple meets last year.

The Tigers are set to host the 30th Annual FHSU Alumni Run on Saturday, August 27 at the Sand Plum Nature Trail in Victoria, Kan. The race will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Intercollegiate competition will begin a week later when FHSU sends runners to the Border Classic in Johnson City, Kan. and the Trojan Invitational in Colby, Kan. on Friday, September 2. The gun will go off in both races at 6 p.m.

Fort Hays State will host a pair of meets in 2016 at the Sand Plum Nature Trail, beginning with the Sand Plum Invite on Thursday, September 15 at 6 p.m. The regular season comes to a close with the FHSU Tiger Open on Saturday, October 8 beginning at 8:40 a.m. More information on the home meets is available HERE.

Fernandez helps Marlins snap Royals’ nine-game winning streak

By STEVEN WINE
AP Sports Writer

MIAMI (AP) – Jose Fernandez pitched seven innings and appeared to avoid a serious injury when he tweaked his right leg on his final pitch Wednesday night, helping the Miami Marlins beat Kansas City 3-0 to snap the Royals’ nine-game winning streak.

Fernandez (13-7) pulled up after striking out Christian Colon to end the seventh, and rubbed his right knee before limping to the dugout.

The Marlins pinch-hit for him in the bottom of the seventh, and no injury was announced. Fernandez was laughing with teammates in the dugout in the ninth inning and joined in the postgame celebration on the field.

His nine strikeouts increased his season total to 213, breaking the Marlins record of 209 set by Ryan Dempster in 2000. Fernandez ended a career-worst three-game losing streak.

He also had the Marlins’ first two hits, hiking his average to .286, and improved to 27-2 at Marlins Park.

Fernando Rodney pitched around two singles and walk for his 25th save and eighth with Miami.

Dillon Gee (5-7) took the loss.

Shaquille Cooper led the offense with an 82-yard touchdown run and Jacob Mezera hit Andrew Jay of La Crosse on a 39-yard scoring strike.

Backup quarterback Brad Schencker connected with redshirt freshman Charles Tigner on an 81-yard TD pass.

Royals extend win streak to nine games by beating Marlins

By STEVEN WINE
AP Sports Writer

MIAMI (AP) – Yordano Ventura escaped two threats while pitching six innings, and the Kansas City Royals extended their winning streak to nine games by beating the Miami Marlins 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Ventura (9-9), who reached 101 mph on the scoreboard radar gun, allowed six hits and one walk while striking out six. Royals starters have an ERA of 1.69 during the winning streak, Kansas City’s longest since June 2014.

Three relievers closed out the win and extended the bullpen’s streak of 32 consecutive shutout innings since Aug. 10. Kelvin Herrera pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save.

The Marlins had won three straight but were shut out despite totaling seven hits. They went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali off PUP list, begins practicing

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs took pass rusher Tamba Hali off the physically unable to perform list Monday, though the team said he will practice on a limited basis.

Hali had surgery in the offseason on his balky knees, which forced him to miss nearly every practice late last season. He was still able to play in games but hardly looked 100 percent.

Hali has spent training camp working out with trainers, but his removal from the PUP list means he can begin working out with the rest of the team. Still, it is unlikely he will play in the Chiefs’ remaining preseason games against Chicago and Green Bay.

The 32-year-old Hali played in 15 games and had 6 1/2 sacks last season.
