KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Danny Duffy won his 10th straight decision, Eric Hosmer doubled in the go-ahead run and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 2-1 Sunday for their eighth consecutive win.

The Royals swept a four-game series from the Twins for the first time since 1999 and have their longest winning streak since an eight-game run Aug. 3-11, 2014.

Duffy (11-1), unbeaten since June 6, improved to 5-0 with a 1.18 ERA in August. His 2.66 ERA ranks second in the American League, while his .917 winning percent tops the majors.

Duffy left after 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run and a season-high eight hits while walking two and striking out four.

He outpitched Twins right-hander Ervin Santana (6-10), who allowed two runs and five hits while striking out 10 and walking one over seven innings.

Ponder helps 49ers to exhibition win over Broncos

By DENNIS GEORGATOS
Associated Press

DENVER (AP) — Christian Ponder ran for a score and threw for another in the fourth quarter and San Francisco pulled away to beat the Denver Broncos 31-24 in an exhibition Saturday night.

Ponder was signed earlier in the week to bolster the team’s depth at quarterback.

Blaine Gabbert, trying to solidify his hold on the starting quarterback job in Colin Kaepernick’s absence, led a scoring drive and finished 6 of 9 for 69 yards in roughly a quarter and a half of play.

Kaepernick, who missed the first exhibition because of a sore right shoulder, resumed throwing in practice Thursday and is expected to begin fully participating in workouts next week in hopes of playing Friday against Green Bay.

Ponder, who was out of football last season, was added by the 49ers (1-1) after backup quarterback Thad Lewis suffered a season-ending knee injury in their exhibition opener against Houston last week. Ponder scored on a 22-yard bootleg and then completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Dres Anderson.

The Broncos (1-1), also in search of a quarterback after the retirement of Peyton Manning and free agency departure of Brock Osweiler, did not get a decisive performance from their contenders.

Trevor Siemian led a nifty game-opening touchdown drive that C.J. Anderson finished with a 19-yard run, but he also was picked off by Eric Reid, who returned the interception 42 yards for the score. Reid easily eluded Siemian’s attempt to tackle him near the goal line. Siemian was 10 of 14 for 75 yards.

Mark Sanchez, who started the Broncos’ exhibition opener last week, relieved Siemian and led a drive ending in a field goal but struggled overall, with three sacks and fumbling twice. He completed 10 of 17 for 120 yards and just missed having one of his throws intercepted by cornerback Chris Davis.

Paxton Lynch, the Broncos’ first-round draft pick, was the most productive among the three though he has primarily gotten third-team reps in training camp.

He threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to John Phillips late in the third quarter and another covering 4 yards to Durron Neal in the waning minutes. His final pass was intercepted in the last moments by cornerback Kenneth Acker.

ROOKIE WATCH

49ers: WR Bryce Treggs, an undrafted free agent out of Cal, caught a 25-yard pass from fellow rookie Jeff Driskel to help set up a second-quarter field goal. Treggs later left the game with a knee injury. WR Devon Cajuste, an undrafted free agent from Stanford, caught a 40-yard pass from Jeff Driskel in the third quarter.

Broncos: FB Andy Janovich, a sixth-round pick out of Nebraska, helped clear the way on Anderson’s first-quarter touchdown run by picking off a 49ers defender with his lead block on the play.

POSITION BATTLES

49ers: RB Mike Davis, in the mix for the right to back up starter Carlos Hyde, ran five times for 26 yards but also had two fumbles. … RB DuJuan Harris, also competing for a backup spot, appeared headed for the end zone late in the third quarter, but fumbled at the 1 and the ball was recovered in the end zone by the Broncos for a touchback.

Broncos: Rookie RB Devontae Booker, competing with Ronnie Hillman to be the primary backup to starter C.J. Anderson, ran nine times for 36 yards and also provided solid pass protection when asked to stay in and block on passing plays. Zaire Anderson, looking to add depth at inside linebacker and contribute on special teams, forced two fumbles.

INJURY UPDATE

49ers: LB Nick Bellore was sidelined by a knee injury in the third quarter. … DT Tony Jerod-Eddie was sidelined in the first half with a chest injury. … LB Eli Harold left late in the second quarter after hitting the ground hard at the bottom of a pileup. No announcement was made on the nature of his injury. … WR Bruce Ellington did not play because of an ankle injury. … DT DeForest Buckner, the first of the 49ers’ two first-round picks, was held out with a lower-body injury.

Broncos: T Darrion Weems left the game early in the second quarter with a concussion. … LB Corey Nelson left midway through the second quarter with a wrist injury. … DE Vance Walker, who tore his right ACL during a training camp practice earlier in the week, has been placed on season-ending injured reserve. … OLB DeMarcus Ware, continuing his recovery from back problems, missed a second exhibition game, but could begin practicing with the team as soon as next week.

Rams slip past Chiefs

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Todd Gurley rushed for a touchdown in his preseason debut, and the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 21-20 on Saturday night.

Gurley, who was held out of exhibition games last season as a rookie while recovering from a torn ACL, rushed for 20 yards on four carries and scored on a 3-yard run.

With the Chiefs (0-2) holding out four defensive starters, including safety Eric Berry and linebacker Josh Mauga, the starting offensive line played four series and allowed Rams running backs Gurley, Benny Cunningham and Malcolm Brown to rush for 85 yards on 15 carries.

Case Keenum started at quarterback and led the Rams (2-0) to two touchdowns, going 4 of 5 for 53 yards with an 11-yard scoring pass to Pharoh Cooper before giving way to rookie Jared Goff.

The No. 1 overall draft pick mostly struggled for the second consecutive week despite working with the first-unit offensive line for two series. Goff lost a fumble after tripping over left guard Cody Wichmann and fumbled out of bounds while being sacked.

Goff’s first touchdown pass came on a 10-yard throw to Brown, who made a juggling catch to put the Rams ahead early in the fourth quarter. Goff played the entire second half and finished 8 of 12 for 82 yards.

Alex Smith was 9 of 12 for 137 yards and one touchdown, leading the Chiefs to 17 points on four possessions. Smith’s pump-fake on a 20-yard touchdown pass completely fooled two Rams defenders and allowed Jeremy Maclin to step into the end zone untouched.

Maclin and Rams cornerback Lamarcus Joyner were ejected with 44 seconds left in the first half after trading slaps to the head.

Referee Pete Morelli accidentally identified Joyner as playing for St. Louis, resulting in boos from the Coliseum crowd.

Jabriel Washington recovered quarterback Aaron Murray’s fumble at the Rams 23-yard line to seal the win. The Chiefs forced a three-and-out to get the ball back with 1:22 left, but Murray threw four incompletions to end the threat.

ROOKIE WATCH

Chiefs: D.J. White started at cornerback, working opposite last season’s Defensive Rookie of the Year Marcus Peters. The sixth-round pick from Georgia Tech was effective when blitzing, but had mixed results in coverage. White finished with one tackle.

Rams: The Rams loaded up on rookie wide receivers hoping to find complements to Tavon Austin and Kenny Britt, but are still waiting for someone to break through. Cooper scored on his only reception, while Paul McRoberts added one catch for 6 yards. Production is more likely to come from the tight ends Tyler Higbee, who did not play because of illness, and Temarrick Hemingway, who had a 26-yard reception from Goff.

POSITION BATTLES

Chiefs: Nick Foles was solid against his former team, going 18 of 22 for 133 yards. With Tyler Bray’ status uncertain after suffering a small chip fracture in his cervical spine last week against the Seattle Seahawks, Foles’ experience as a starter with the Rams and Philadelphia Eagles represents a significant upgrade behind Smith regardless of when the fourth-year quarterback from Tennessee is able to return.

Rams: With the secondary struggling again, cornerback E.J. Gaines’ first live action since suffering a foot injury in training camp last year was a welcome sign. Gaines finished with four tackles and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he started opposite Trumaine Johnson next week at Denver.

INJURY UPDATE

Chiefs: Fullback Trey Millard was taken off the field on a cart after suffering a left knee injury covering a punt. Millard previously tore the ACL in his left knee as a senior at Oklahoma.

Rams: Wide receiver Bradley Marquez suffered a right leg injury in the third quarter. Marquez did not appear to be able to put any weight on his leg as he was helped off the field.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eric Hosmer’s single in the 11th inning drove in Cheslor Cuthbert with the winning run to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night.

The Royals have won six straight, matching a season high, and got their eighth walk-off victory.

There was a 3-hour, 3-minute rain delay in the top of the fifth, plus a 12-minute delay when some of the lights went out in the bottom of the sixth. The game did not end until seven hours after the first pitch.

Cuthbert led off the 11th with an infield single against J.T. Chargois (0-1), the sixth Twins pitcher. Lorenzo Cain then walked before Hosmer’s game-winning hit.

Chien-Ming Wang (6-0) allowed one single in two innings.

Alex Gordon, who extended his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games, and Alcides Escobar singled with one-out in the 10th, but the Royals failed to score.

FHSU men’s soccer tops MIAA preseason poll

FHSU Sports Information

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Fort Hays State men’s soccer team enters the 2016 season picked first in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, released on Thursday (Aug. 18). Last season the Tigers finished third in the conference with a 4-3-1 record. Northeastern State holds the second spot in the poll while the reigning champs, Upper Iowa, rounds out the top three.

The first look at the 2016 Fort Hays State men’s soccer team will take place this week as the Tigers play a pair of exhibition matches. The first is a home match against Northwest Kansas Tech on Friday (Aug. 19) at 7 pm, while the other is Sunday (Aug. 21) when they head to Hastings, Neb. to take on Hastings College. Last season the Tigers put together the best season in school history by posting a record of 13-5-2, and claiming their second consecutive NCAA Division II Central Region crown.

Offense was the key to the Tiger success in 2015 as they outscored opponents 42-26, averaging 2.1 goals per match. It was an entire team effort to achieve the offense FHSU put on display as 14 players scored at least one goal, 12 of which had at least one assist as well. Five players had 10 or more total points on the year.

The Tigers will get a big challenge the first week of regular season play when they play at Rockhurst University in a rematch of the 2015 national quarterfinal. FHSU fell just short of a final four appearance, eliminated on penalty kicks after the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Rockhurst opens this season at No. 3 in the nation. Just a couple weeks later, FHSU travels out to the west coast where it will meet preseason No. 11 Seattle Pacific during a two-match swing in the state of Washington before getting into MIAA play.

FHSU women’s soccer picked fourth in the MIAA preseason poll

FHSU Sports Information

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Fort Hays State women’s soccer team is picked fourth for the second consecutive year in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, released for the 2016 season on Thursday.

The Tigers had a solid season in 2015 going 11-8-1 overall with a fourth place finish in the MIAA at 7-4. It was the second consecutive season that FHSU finished in the top third of the MIAA after a third place finish in 2014.

Fort Hays State will have a good mix of veterans and newcomers as it returns 15 players from the 2015 team, while adding 12 to the roster this season. Amongst the returners are three defenders, All-MIAA selections Hannah Smith, CheyAnn Queener, and Bailey Schmitz, as well as All-MIAA goalkeeper Kristen Thompson. They helped anchor a defense in 2015 that held opponents to less than a goal per game with a 0.90 average.

In addition to defense, the offense will also see All-MIAA performers returning in forward Kelsey Steffens and midfielder Jasmine Beaulieu.

The Tigers kick off preseason action today, Thursday (Aug. 18) at Butler (Kan.) Community College in El Dorado, Kan. This will be the first of three exhibition matches for the Tigers before they start the regular season on Thursday (Sept. 1) with a road match against Southwest Minnesota State.

Hosmer ninth inning HR lifts Royals to sweep of Detroit

By DAVE HOGG
Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — Eric Hosmer hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to give the Kansas City Royals a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night and complete a three-game sweep.

Hosmer broke up Anibal Sanchez’s no-hit bid with a double in the seventh inning after spoiling his perfect game bid with a walk in the fifth.

Sanchez threw seven shutout innings after allowing eight runs in four innings in his previous start. He struck out six and walked two Wednesday.

In the ninth, Shane Greene (2-3) allowed a one-out single to Lorenzo Cain before Hosmer’s line drive into the right-field stands. Drew Butera added an RBI single later in the inning.

Matt Strahm (1-0) got the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, and Kelvin Herrera pitched the ninth for his sixth save.

Broncos DE Derek Wolfe leaves practice with injury

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – Denver Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe has left a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers because of a left ankle injury.

Wolfe was injured Wednesday while pass rushing during 11-on-11 scrimmaging against the 49ers’ first-team offense. He limped to the locker room, leaning on team trainers walking on either side of him.

Coach Gary Kubiak said after practice that Wolfe rolled his ankle. There was no immediate word on the severity of the injury.

On Monday, the Broncos lost starting defensive end Vance Walker to a season-ending knee injury. Walker tore his right ACL during drills when he became entangled with a pass blocker.

Duffy, four home runs lead Royals over Tigers

DETROIT (AP) — Danny Duffy allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings and the Kansas City Royals hit four homers in a 6-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.

Raul Mondesi, Alex Gordon and Eric Hosmer all homered off Justin Verlander (12-7), while Kendrys Morales went deep off Mark Lowe.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered for Detroit’s only run. The Tigers have lost seven of nine.

Duffy (10-1) allowed three hits and two walks, striking out five.

Verlander gave up five runs — three earned — four hits and a walk in seven-plus innings. He struck out six.

Verlander retired the first eight batters he faced, but Mondesi gave the Royals a 1-0 lead by driving a hanging slider just inside the right-field foul pole for his first career homer.

Kansas City’s second hit came in the fifth inning, when Gordon hit another slider into nearly the same spot as Mondesi. Gordon came into the game with a .205 career average against the Tigers ace.

Duffy only needed 41 pitches over the first four innings, but Saltalamacchia put the Tigers on the board with a fifth-inning homer into the shrubs above the centerfield fence.

Hosmer restored Kansas City’s two-run lead with a seventh-inning homer to center field that was estimated at 443 feet. It was the fifth hit of the game — four solo homers and a double by Detroit’s J.D. Martinez.

Victor Martinez got the game’s first single when Gordon missed a diving catch of his sinking liner to left in the seventh. J.D. Martinez hit into a force at second, but moved to third on a wild pitch and a fly ball.

Duffy, though, struck out James McCann to end the inning.

Detroit’s defense fell apart at the start of the eighth. Gordon hit a routine grounder to third, but ended up on second when Saltalamacchia missed Casey McGehee’s throw. Alcides Escobar singled to left with Gordon taking third, then moved to second when Justin Upton lobbed the ball into the infield.

Verlander walked Mondesi on his 112th and final pitch, loading the bases. Bruce Rondon came in from the bullpen and struck out Paolo Orlando, but Cheslor Cuthbert hit a blooper to shallow center that Ian Kinsler got under, but dropped.

Kinsler recovered in time to force Escobar at third, but Gordon scored to make to it 4-1. Lorenzo Cain doubled to give the Royals a four-run lead.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: Three pitchers with long-term injuries are scheduled to make rehab performances this week. Kris Medlen, out since May with a rotator cuff problem, started Tuesday night for Surprise in the Arizona League, while Jason Vargas (Tommy John surgery) is scheduled to start for Double-A Northwest Arizona on Wednesday. Mike Minor (shoulder) is supposed to pitch for Triple-A Omaha on Friday. Vargas and Minor have both missed the entire season.

Tigers: 1B Miguel Cabrera was out of the starting lineup Tuesday with a strained left biceps. The injury, sustained in Monday’s loss to the Royals, is not considered serious. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said he expects Cabrera to miss no more than 2 or 3 games. … Jordan Zimmermann (neck) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday, and is scheduled to throw another on Thursday.

TIGERS TRADE

The Tigers announced shortly before the first pitch that they had traded utilityman Mike Aviles and minor-league catcher Kade Scivicque to Atlanta for infielder Erick Aybar. General manager Al Avila said the move was designed to give the Tigers more offense off the bench. Aybar is hitting .242 this season as opposed to Aviles’ .210.

UP NEXT

The teams finish their three-game series on Wednesday evening, with Kansas City’s Yordano Ventura (8-9, 4.60) facing Anibal Sanchez (6-12, 6.31). Sanchez has allowed 23 homers in 19 starts and only lasted four innings in his last outing.
