A’s trade Burns to Royals for Eibner

CLEVELAND (AP) — Outfielder Billy Burns was traded from the Oakland Athletics to the Kansas City Royals on Saturday for outfield prospect Brett Eibner.

Oakland also placed left-hander Rich Hill on the 15-day disabled list with a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand, a move retroactive to July 20.

Burns, who has been playing at Triple-A Nashville, hit .234 with 12 RBIs in 73 games with Oakland this season. Eibner batted .231 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 26 games for the Royals.

Hill is 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA in 14 starts and hasn’t pitched since July 17, when he threw only five pitches before leaving due to the blister.

Hill was scheduled to start Sunday but was scratched after experiencing discomfort during a throwing session Friday. Right-hander Sonny Gray will take Hill’s turn against Cleveland.

Left-hander Dillon Overton was recalled from Nashville to start Saturday night against the Indians.

Chiefs sign Fisher to contract extension

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs signed left tackle Eric Fisher to a contract extension Saturday, the first day veterans joined rookies on the practice field at Missouri Western for training camp.

The Chiefs didn’t announce terms of the extension, but a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press it was a four-year, $48 million deal that includes $40 million guaranteed. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract terms were confidential.

Fisher was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 draft out of Central Michigan, but he struggled to adjust to the NFL his first couple years. He finally came into his own last season, showcasing the talent that the Chiefs hope can make him their left tackle for the foreseeable future.

The Chiefs exercised their fifth-year option on him in May. That means Fisher’s total deal spans six years and $63 million.

10th inning home run lifts Larks past Dodge City in Jayhawk League Championship Series

HAYS – Austin O’Brien hit leadoff home run on the first pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Hays Larks to a 3-2 comeback win over Dodge City in the opening game of the best-of-three Jayhawk League Championship Series Friday night at Larks Park. The Larks (36-10) tied the game on Ty Redington’s two-out double that scored Jacob Boston in the ninth.

Tyler Schwaner pitched a scoreless seventh then Chad Smith worked a scoreless eighth and ninth. The three relievers combined to give up only three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

This was the Larks third extra inning game this season, all against the Athletics (28-19), and the the first they’ve won. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Rougned Odor homered twice, A.J. Griffin pitched into the sixth inning and the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 8-3 on Friday night.

Jurickson Profar also went deep for the Rangers, and scored three runs.

Odor hit a solo homer in the first that put AL West-leading Texas up 3-0 against Edinson Volquez (8-9). That 443-foot drive into the second deck of seats in right field came a night after Odor’s 465-footer that is the longest in his career. He had another solo shot in the seventh, his 21st of the season barely clearing the 8-foot wall in right.

Eric Hosmer homered for the defending World Series champion Royals, who dropped to 10 games behind Cleveland in the AL Central.

Griffin (4-1) had his longest outing in seven starts in just over a month since coming off the disabled list because of right shoulder stiffness. The right-hander struck out one and walked two while throwing 66 of 98 pitches for strikes in 5 2-3 innings.

Royals activate Lorenzo Cain from the DL

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Kansas City Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain has been reinstated from the disabled list after missing a month with a left hamstring strain.

With Cain rejoining the Royals before their game Friday night in Texas, rookie outfielder Brett Eibner was optioned to Triple-A Omaha.

Cain hit .290 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs in 73 games before missing 25 games. He had been on the disabled list since injuring his hamstring while trying to beat out a single in a June 28 game against St. Louis.

In a two games for Omaha on a rehab assignment, Cain went 3 for 8.

Eibner has hit .231 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 26 games over three stints with the Royals this season.

Chiefs’ Eric Berry skips report day for training camp

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs safety Eric Berry was not among the players who reported to training camp at Missouri Western on Friday, a decision largely expected after negotiations on a long-term contract with Kansas City broke down.

Berry was designated the Chiefs’ franchise player but has not yet signed his contract, which means he cannot be disciplined for skipping camp. But considering the one-year deal promises to pay him more than $10.8 million, Berry is expected to sign at some point before the season.

The Chiefs and Berry’s representatives were never close to reaching a long-term agreement by the July 15 deadline. Those talks must now be shelved until after the season.

Moreland, Hamels lead Rangers in win over Royals

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Mitch Moreland’s second home run of the game broke a tie in the eighth inning and Cole Hamels earned his 12th win of the season as the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Thursday night.

Sam Dyson earned his 21st save in 23 opportunities, stranding the tying run at third base.

Both homers by the left-handed hitting Moreland were to the opposite field and came off Yordano Ventura (6-9). It was Moreland’s 10th career multi-homer game and second of the season. He has five homers in his last 11 hits.

Royals put reliever Hochevar on disabled list

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Kansas City Royals reliever Luke Hochevar has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

The Royals made the move before Thursday night’s game at Texas, and said the right-hander has symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome. That is a condition when blood vessels or nerves between the collarbone and first rib become compressed, and can cause pain in the shoulder and neck.

Kansas City recalled right-hander Brooks Pounders from Triple-A Omaha.

The DL move was retroactive to Monday, the day after Hochevar took the loss in a 2-1 home defeat to the Rangers. He gave up a tiebreaking homer to the first batter he faced, Delino DeShields leading off the seventh.

Hochevar is 2-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 40 appearances this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Raul Mondesi had a bunt single for his first big league hit, with two runs scoring on the play on pitcher Matt Shoemaker’s throwing error, as the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 7-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night.

Shoemaker, who did not allow a base runner until the fifth inning, yielded singles to Alex Gordon and Paulo Orlando to start the seventh. Mondesi, who was called up Tuesday, put down a bunt and beat the throw to first as the throw by Shoemaker (5-11) sailed into right field.

Both runners scored and Mondesi wound up on third.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia came out claiming interference, and after a 6 minute, 15 second review the call on the field was not changed. Scioscia officially protested the game.

Mondesi added a RBI-infield single in a two-run eighth. The second run scored on pitcher Jose Alvarerz’s throwing error.

Joakim Soria (4-4) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

Chiefs Charles on PUP list as camp begins

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs placed running back Jamaal Charles on the physically unable to perform list Wednesday, though coach Andy Reid said it should not be considered a setback in his return from a knee injury.

Charles tore the ACL in his right knee in Week 5 last season. He had surgery soon afterward and was far enough along in his recovery that he participated in some drills during mandatory minicamp.

The Chiefs can take Charles off the PUP list whenever he is medically cleared, but that likely will not happen soon. Veterans do not report for the start of training camp until Friday, and even then Reid said he plans to take it slowly with his star running back.

Big inning carries Larks past Dodge City

The Larks (34-10, 30-10 JL) scored five runs in the third to take the lead for good and were up 9-7 heading into the fifth where they scored eight to take control. They sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning which included two-run singles from Ty Redington and Connor Ross. Alex Weiss and Matt Waller also drove in runs in the frame.

The 19 runs is a season high for Hays as they tie a season high with 20 hits.

Tyler Schwaner (2-0) pitched three innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts and no walks and gets the win.

The Larks hold a one-game lead over El Dorado in the Jayhawk League second half. The Broncos lost 3-2 in Liberal Tuesday. Hays can lock up at least a share of the second half title with a win in the series finale Wednesday at Larks Park. Free admission for the 7 o’clock game courtesy of Wal-Mart.

LARKS TO HOST LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
The Larks will host the best of three Jayhawk League Championship Series beginning Friday at Larks Park. The Larks, who won the first half title, will play the winner of the second half. If Hays wins both titles, they will face the team with the second best winning percentage and would need to win the series to claim the Jayhawk League title.
