Larks drop series finale to Aviators

HAYS – The Hays Larks outhit Haysville 12-8 but went  0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and lost their series finale with Haysville 5-2 Sunday night at Larks Park. The Larks (23-7, 19-7 JL) hit into four double plays and stranded 13 base runners as they fall to 3-3 in the second half of Jayhawk League play.

Hays loaded the bases three times including twice in the fifth but could muster just one run as they leave at least one base runner in each inning

Shane Browning (2-1) allowed three runs on five hits over four innings in his first start and suffered the loss.

The Larks, who came into the series averaging over six runs per game which was second best in the Jayhawk League, were held to a total of four in the three games and are averaging only two per game in July.

They’re are off tonight but continue the nine-game homestand with the first of three against Liberal on Tuesday. The Bee Jays lost 3-2 to Wellington but lead the second half at 5-1.

Cano, Lind homer to help Mariners hold off Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Robinson Cano and Adam Lind homered in a five-run seventh inning and the Seattle Mariners held off the Kansas City Royals 8-5 on Sunday.

Cano’s two-run shot to deep right field for his 21st home run of the season extended the Mariners’ lead to 5-0. Lind hit a three-run shot, his 13th, a few batters later.

The Royals scored all five of their runs over the final three innings, pulling within three on Alex Gordon’s homer leading off the ninth.

Former Royals farmhand Mike Montgomery (3-3) pitched 6 1/3 strong innings, giving up one run and five hits, in his first start of the season.

Dillion Gee (3-3) struggled early and picked up the loss for the Royals, giving up three runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Larks pitching holds off Haysville

HAYS – Austin Isenhart allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings and Chad Smith picked up a four-out save in the Hays Larks 2-1 win over Haysville Saturday night at Larks Park. Isenhart (1-1) struck out a season-high nine batters and walked three as the Larks (23-6, 19-5 Jayhawk League) evened the three-game series a win apiece.

Chad Smith got a one-pitch out to strand runners at second and third to end the eighth inning then retired three straight in the ninth after giving up two singles to open the inning. It’s Smith’s ninth save of the season and eighth in his last eight outings.

The Larks scored a run in the first on a Devlin Grandberg single. Austin O’Brien led off the sixth with a triple and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on a Jacob Boston single.

Haysville (13-15, 11-15 JL) stranded 13 baserunners, nine of them in the final four innings and eight of those were left in scoring position.

The two teams close out the series Sunday night with free admission courtesy of Super 8 Motel and the Hays Rotary.

Perez homers, makes key pickoff to lead Royals over Mariners

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez homered and made a key pickoff throw Saturday to help the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Marines 5-3.

Perez hit a solo home run off the foul pole in the seventh inning that gave the Royals a two-run lead.

In the eighth, the World Series MVP made the defensive play of the game. With runners at the corners and one out, the star catcher trapped Kyle Seager off first base.

The pickoff was Perez’s first of the season and 18th of his career.

Edinson Volquez (8-8) gave up three runs and six hits in six innings.

Kelvin Herrera pitched a perfect ninth for his first save since April 10, 2013 to seal the victory.

Wade Miley (6-6) gave up 10 hits. He left after Cheslor Cuthbert’s RBI single made it 4-3 in the sixth.

Larks shutout at home

HAYS – Haysville scored a run in the first inning then added another in the sixth and shutout the Larks 2-0 in the opening game of their three-game series at Larks Park.

The Aviators (13-14, 11-13 Jayhawk League) took advantage of two singles and an error to score the games first run. They scored the games second run on a two-out wild pitch.

Austin O’Brien had two of the Larks (22-6, 18-6 Jayhawk League) five hits. Hays couldn’t take advantage of the six walks issued by Haysville starter Denson Hull and stranded 12 base runners as they are shutout for the first time this summer.

Starter Stephen Yancey allowed both runs on five hits with six strikeouts and a walk over six innings and suffered the loss. Sam Reed pitched three scoreless innings and struck out six.

The two teams continue the three-game series Saturday. It’s Pink the Park Night with free admission courtesy A&A Coors and Horizon Appliance and Electronics.

Eagles comeback bid falls short

The Hays Eagles Sr. American Legion nearly erased an early 4-0 deficit but the comeback bid fell short in a 7-6 loss to 316 2.0 Friday. The Eagles cut the gap in half with two runs in the fourth inning. The scored four in the sixth to grab a 6-5 lead but 316 2.0 rallied with two in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off win.

Ricky Hockett drove in two runs with a sixth inning triple.

Ryan Ruder allowed two unearned runs on one hit in 1 1/3 innings of relief and suffered the loss.

Ellis Legion holds off Jr. Monarchs

HAYS – Ellis raced out to a 4-0 lead then held off the comeback bid of the Hays Monarchs Jr. American Legion and won 4-0 Friday evening. Ellis scored three runs in the second inning and another in the fourth. The Monarchs then scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings but came up short on on the comeback bid.

Tate Garcia drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Luke Ruder’s RBI single in the seventh closed the gap to two. Eston Brown’s run scoring single an inning later pulled the Monarchs to within a run.

Cole Zimmerman allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits over 4 2/3 innings and suffered the loss.

Hisashi Iwakuma, Mariners hold on to beat Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hisashi Iwakuma pitched into the seventh inning, Seattle scored the go-ahead runs on Yordano Ventura’s wild pitch and the Mariners held on to beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Friday night.

Iwakuma (9-6) allowed one run, five hits and three walks over 6 2/3 innings, striking out six. He kept the Royals off balance with his usual herky-jerky delivery, the only run he allowed coming on Cheslor Cuthbert’s base hit in the fourth inning.

Steve Cishek, who blew the save in the series opener, allowed Salvador Perez’s homer in the ninth inning before finishing off the inning. It was his 21st save of the season.

Ventura (6-6) was nearly as stingy, giving up only a sacrifice fly to Ketel Marte in the fifth, before things unraveled for him after Seth Smith’s single and Robinson Cano’s double in the sixth inning.

Weekend activities planned as the Larks kick off long homestand

The Hays Larks begin their longest homestand of the summer Friday night when they host the defending Jayhawk League champion Haysville Aviators in the first of a three-game series and Larks Park. It begins a nine-game homestand that is packed full of activities.

Friday is Old Timers Night along with the 70th year of the Larks celebration. All former Larks players in attendance will receive a commemorative hat courtesy of M&D Incorporated and introduced before the game. There will also be 70 year celebration cookies for the first 500 people Friday night along with a social at the ballpark after the game. Admission is free courtesy M&D Incorporated and Eagle Communications.

Saturday is the annual Pink the Park Night. There will be a pink bat autographed by the Larks and two authentic MLB baseball that were used on there pink days that will be autographed by the team and raffled off. Admission is free courtesy of A&A Coors and Horizon Appliance & Electronics.

The Larks, who won the Jayhawk League first half, are 22-5 overall and 2-1 in the second half of Jayhawk League second half, a game back of Liberal and Wellington. Haysville, who finished seven games back of the Larks  in the first half, are 1-2 in the second half.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Salvador Perez ripped a double off the wall in the ninth inning, scoring Whit Merrifield and Jarrod Dyson and giving the Kansas City Royals a 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night.

Merrifield doubled off Steve Cishek (2-5) leading off the inning, then Kendrys Morales got plunked on the foot. Dyson came in to pinch run and Eric Hosmer struck out before Perez dug in to face the Mariners’ closer

He lined a shot off the wall in center for his second career game-ending hit.

Brooks Pounders (1-0) tossed a scoreless inning for his first big league win, helping Kansas City bounce back after a dismal road trip, during which they were swept in Toronto and lost five of their last six games.

Hays High grad lands head baseball coaching job at Missouri university

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University Athletic Department recently announced the hiring of the newest member of the coaching staff, as Brock Nehls has been hired as the head baseball coach. Nehls becomes the fifth coach in the history of William Woods Baseball.

“I am happy to welcome Brock Nehls to the William Woods family,” stated Director of Athletics Jason Vittone. “Brock played a key role in the success at Dodge City Community College, including a 7th place finish at the NJCAA World Series in 2015. He has a strong recruiting background and I believe he is a good fit for our university.”

Nehls comes to William Woods after spending the last five seasons as an assistant coach at Dodge City Community College. During his time at Dodge City CC, Nehls was in charge of the pitching staff and recruiting.

“I want to thank President Barnett and Athletic Director Jason Vittone for the opportunity to be a part of the William Woods University family,” state Brock Nehls. “I look forward to leading the Owl baseball program and my family and I are excited to start this new chapter in our lives.”

Nehls graduated from Hays High School in Hays and received his bachelor’s degree in recreation from Emporia State University.

Saunders leads Blue Jays to sweep with win over Royals

TORONTO (AP) – Michael Saunders hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and singled home the winning run in the eighth as the Toronto Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep of Kansas City, beating the Royals 4-2 on Wednesday.

Toronto won its fifth straight, while its 2015 ALCS opponent dropped its fourth in a row.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-out double off Kelvin Herrera (1-2) in the eighth and scored when Saunders lined a single to center. Russell Martin followed with an RBI double.

Marcus Stroman (7-4) pitched eight innings to win for the first time in four starts. Roberto Osuna finished for his 17th save.

FHSU softball adds three for 2017 season

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State head softball coach Adrian Mohr announced the addition of three more student-athletes for the 2017 season. Two transfers and one freshman join a list of five freshmen that signed in the early period with the Tigers. The latest commitments include Collette West, Candace Bollig, and Hailey Chapman.

West transfers to FHSU from Colby (Kan.) Community College and will be a junior in 2017. West led Colby in batting average for two consecutive seasons and earned All-KJCCC West Division Second Team honors in 2016 at catcher. West is a versatile player that can also play multiple infield positions. As a sophomore in 2016, she batted .403 with 30 extra-base hits (10 home runs, 18 doubles, 2 triples), while driving in 57 runs and scoring 56. She finished with a .699 slugging percentage for the season and also provided a threat with her speed by stealing 32 bases. As a freshman in 2015, she had a .349 batting average with 26 extra-base hits (8 home runs, 16 doubles, 2 triples), while recording 43 runs and 37 RBI. She added nine stolen bases that year. West is a native of Centerville, Utah.

Bollig is a local product from Ellis, Kan., who enters her junior year transferring from Dodge City (Kan.) Community College. She also earned All-KJCCC West Division Second Team honors in 2016, getting the nod at third base. Bollig also has a good balance of power and speed. She led the team in batting average at .408 with 27 extra-base hits (11 home runs, 12 doubles, 4 triples), while scoring 46 runs and driving in 41. She had an impressive .518 on-base percentage and .815 slugging percentage, while adding a team-best 12 stolen bases. Bollig played her freshman season at Barton (Kan.) Community College in 2014. She batted .425 with 25 extra-base hits (8 home runs, 14 doubles, 3 triples), while adding 46 runs and 37 RBI. She had five stolen bases that season.

Chapman was one of the top pitchers in Kansas Class 5A as a senior in 2016 at Salina South High School. She earned all-state second team honors and was twice an all-league first team selection as a pitcher. She helped the Cougars to a league championship during her senior year.

The five freshmen that signed in the early period includes Lexie Kimminau, Lily Sale, Jeni Mohr, Bailey Boxberger, and Tess Gray.
