NEW YORK (AP) – The Philadelphia 76ers used the first pick in Thursday’s NBA draft to select LSU freshman forward Ben Simmons, who averaged 19.2 points, 11.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists for the Tigers as a freshman last season. Duke freshman forward Brandon Ingram was the second player selected, grabbed by the Los Angeles Lakers. Boston chose third and took California freshman forward Jaylen Brown.

Veteran infielder Infante clears waivers, becomes free agent

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Veteran infielder Omar Infante cleared waivers Thursday and became a free agent.

Infante was designated for assignment June 15th by the Kansas City Royals, who chose to pay him the nearly $14 million remaining on his contract rather than let him ride the bench as a utility player.

Infante spent his first six seasons in Detroit. He later played for Atlanta, earning an All-Star nod with the Braves in 2010, and briefly spent time in Miami before returning to the Tigers for two more seasons.

But after signing with Kansas City, the career .271 hitter began a slow decline, his bat speed and fielding ability no longer what it was in his prime. He hit only eight homers with the Royals, two fewer than his final season with Detroit.

Larks rally falls short in Wellington

WELLINGTON, Kan. – Devlin Granberg hit a three-run home run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning but it wasn’t enough to finish off the comeback as the Hays Larks lost 6-5 to the Wellington Heat Wednesday night at Hibbs-Hooten Stadium in Wellington.

The Heat (11-9, 7-7 Jayhawk League) broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

Jax Biggers doubled and scored on an Austin O’Brien single in the top of the first to give the Larks (16-2, 12-2 Jayhawk League)  the early lead. Connor Ross doubled and drove in Ty Redington in the second to push the lead to 2-0.

Metro State’s Ryan Baca went the distance for the Heat, holding the Larks to the five runs despite giving up 14 hits. Baca struck out 10 and walked one.

Layne Downing (1-1) gave up two runs on two hits over an inning of relief and suffered the loss.

The Larks still lead the Jayhawk League by three games over Dodge City, who lost 13-3 in Liberal Wednesday.

The Larks close out the series Thursday night before returning home for three with Derby on Friday.
