KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Salvador Perez homered for the second straight night, Ian Kennedy kept the Cleveland Indians quiet and the Kansas City Royals finished off a three-game sweep with a 9-4 victory Wednesday.

Perez hit a three-run shot during a go-ahead fifth inning against Corey Kluber (6-7), while Eric Hosmer added two RBIs and Whit Merrifield remained hot to help Kansas City win its fifth straight.

The Royals have won nine straight at home, their best stretch since 2003.

Kennedy (5-5) allowed just five hits, including two-run homers by Rajai Davis and Michael Martinez, as he pitched into the seventh inning. He won for the first time since beating Cleveland on May 7.

Royals designate Infante for assignment

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals designated infielder Omar Infante for assignment before Wednesday’s game against the Cleveland Indians, likely ending his rather unproductive tenure in Kansas City.

Infante has struggled with injuries since signing a $30.25 million, four-year deal prior to the 2014 season. Unless he is traded or claimed on waivers, both unlikely, the Royals would owe him the remainder of $7.75 million due this season, $8 million on his contract next season and a $2 million buyout for the 2018 season.

The 34-year-old Infante has gradually lost playing time to Whit Merrifield and others, and was hitting just .239 with 11 RBIs in 39 games. He hit .220 in 124 games last season, when an injury sidelined him during the Royals’ run to the World Series title.

Kansas City recalled left-hander Brian Flynn to take his roster spot.

Larks rally past Liberal for fourth straight win

LIBERAL, Kan. – Connor Ross laced a one-out single to right-center field in the top of the ninth inning which scored Andy Shadid with the go-ahead run and the Hays Larks picked up their fourth straight win with a 3-2 victory over the Liberal BeeJays Tuesday night at Brent Gould Field.

The Larks (10-1, 6-1 Jayhawk League) tied the game with two runs in the seventh on an Austin O’Brien single and Devlin Granberg groundout.

Ryan Van Leeuwen (1-0) recorded the final out of the eighth inning on a flyout with runners at the corners and picks up the win. Chad Smith worked around a leadoff single in the ninth for his third save.

Starting pitcher Stephen Yancey allowed two runs on three hits over 7 2/3 innings and faced only three batters six of his seven full innings.

The two teams play game two of the three-game series Wednesday in Liberal.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning, and the Kansas City Royals held on through a shaky ninth to beat the Cleveland Indians 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Joakim Soria (3-2) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for Kansas City, then proceeded to handle the ninth with setup man Kelvin Herrera and closer Wade Davis resting after having each pitched the last three days.

Soria got Jason Kipnis to pop out with runners on first and second to end it.

Unable to solve Josh Tomlin most of the night, the Royals finally took the lead off Bryan Shaw (0-3), who gave up a single to Eric Hosmer before Perez deposited a pitch 402 feet away in left field.

It ended a bizarre streak of 11 consecutive Royals homers of the solo variety.
