Yan Gomes homered in the second and Tyler Naquin hit his first major league home run in the seventh for the Indians.

Salazar (6-3) held Kansas City to three hits and was in command, other than giving up Drew Butera’s leadoff homer in the third. The right-hander has allowed two runs or less in nine of his 11 starts.

The Indians have won four of five over the defending World Series champions and trail the AL Central-leading Royals by a half-game.

Francisco Lindor’s RBI single in the third off Edinson Volquez (5-5) broke a 1-all tie and sparked a three-run rally. Mike Napoli followed with an RBI double while the third run scored on Volquez’s wild pitch.

Big 12 to bring back football championship in 2017

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Big 12 is bringing back its football championship game in 2017.

Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says the conference’s presidents and chancellors voted Friday to approve “in concept the re-implementation of a championship football game.”

How the 10-team conference will decide which teams play in the championship is still to be determined. The Big 12 currently plays a nine-game, round-robin schedule, with no divisions, but that could change even if the conference does not add members.

Bowlsby says: “We have a lot of details to work out.” The league has made no decision on whether to expand.

The NCAA recently approved the Big 12’s request to allow conferences to hold football championship games with less than the previously required 12 teams split into two divisions.

Larks Logo 2HAYS, Kan. – The Hays Larks scored four runs in the final three innings Thursday night and won their season opener 5-2 over the Denver Cougars at Larks Park.

Hays is off Friday. They host the Colorado Sox for three games Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s doubleheader and Sunday’s single game both start at 6 pm at Larks Park.

Napoli’s sacrifice fly gives Indians win in 9th

CLEVELAND (AP) – Francisco Lindor broke out of his slump at the perfect time for the Cleveland Indians.

After tying the game with a ninth-inning triple, Lindor scored the winning run on a head-first dive across home plate on Mike Napoli’s sacrifice fly and the Indians rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night.

Lindor was in a 2-for-19 skid when he came to bat in the ninth, but delivered when it mattered.

“I was just thinking, ‘Make hard contact,”‘ he said, “And I hit it and I was like, ‘Yes, I did it.’ That’s what I wanted to do.”

Carlos Santana started the rally with a single off Joakim Soria (2-2) and took second on right fielder Paulo Orlando’s fielding error. After Jason Kipnis’ sacrifice, Lindor hit a line drive to right.

Orlando attempted a diving catch but the ball rolled to the wall. Pinch-runner Michael Martinez scored and Lindor slid headfirst into third.

“I didn’t come out running hard out of the box,” Lindor said. “I messed up. That’s a mistake by me, but as soon as I saw the ball drop, I was running until they tell you to stop. I was thinking three all the way.”

Napoli’s fly ball to left was deep enough to score Lindor, who dived into home plate to give Cleveland its second straight walkoff win.

“It means we can do it,” said Lindor, who threw his helmet high in the air after scoring. “We know we can do it, but it’s always fun, it’s always good to have moments like this.”

Tommy Hunter (2-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings for the win.

Soria filled in as closer for Wade Davis, who had pitched three of the last four days and two straight.

“Just didn’t want to use him three days in a row,” manager Ned Yost said of Davis. “It was one of those things where he needed a day.”

Drew Butera and Cheslor Cuthbert homered for the Royals, who appeared on the verge of winning for the ninth time in 10 games. Jarrod Dyson’s fourth-inning single broke a 3-all tie.

Yordano Ventura allowed two runs in seven innings.

Carlos Carrasco allowed three runs over five innings in his first appearance since April 24, when he strained his left hamstring covering first base. He was activated from the 15-day disabled list before the game.

“I thought he threw the ball well,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “He made a couple costly mistakes. It’ll be nice to have him back. He’s a big, big guy for us.”

Lonnie Chisenhall, Jose Ramirez and Tyler Naquin also drove in runs for Cleveland.

CAVS FAN

Royals SS Alcides Escobar has made it clear he’s rooting for the Cleveland Cavaliers to defeat the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. Escobar wore a gold Cavaliers No. 2 Kyrie Irving jersey during batting practice Thursday.

“I like him,” Escobar said. “He’s doing good. That’s my second favorite player. LeBron (James) and him.”

OU president Boren says Big 12 is strong, on positive track

By STEPHEN HAWKINS
AP Sports Writer

IRVING, Texas (AP) – Oklahoma President David Boren says the Big 12 board of directors is in a data-gathering mode and would rather be right than hasty while considering the possibility of expansion.

Boren, serving as chair of the league’s board that will make the final decisions, described the 10-team league as very strong Thursday and on a “very positive track.”

Oklahoma’s president once described the Big 12 as “psychologically disadvantaged” as the smallest of the five power conferences, without a football championship game or league-wide television network.

Boren said it is time for the league to make decisions, but is in a position of strength with time to be careful in making them.

The Big 12 directors meet again Friday, the last day of the league’s spring meetings.

CLEVELAND (AP) – Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas has had season-ending surgery on his right knee.

Moustakas tore his anterior cruciate ligament in a May 22 collision with teammate Alex Gordon. The team says Thursday that the operation was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Florida.

Moustakas was a key player in helping Kansas City win the World Series last season and was selected to the AL All-Star team. He batted .240 with seven home runs in 27 games this year.

Gordon broke his wrist in the collision and the left fielder also is on the disabled list.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Danny Duffy pitched six effective innings and rookie Whit Merrifield had two hits and scored a run as the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-3 on Wednesday night to complete a 6-0 homestand.

The last time the Royals had a homestand of 6-0 or better was June 2-8, 1988, when they went 7-0.

Duffy (1-0) yielded three runs and seven hits, while walking none and striking out six over six innings, his longest outing since moving into the rotation on May 15.

Royals relievers Joakim Soria, Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis held the Rays scoreless over the final three innings. Davis picked up his 16th save in 17 chances, but not before walking one, giving up a hit and uncorking a wild pitch.

Merrifield has hit in his first 11 career starts, which is a Royals’ record.

Hays Larks set to open 2016 season

After missing the National Baseball Congress tournament for the first time since 2010 and only the second time since 1988, the Hays Larks are hopeful of bigger and better things in 2016.

The Larks are set to open their new season Thursday night with a non-league game with the Denver Cougars. They will host the Colorado Sox in a three game series on Saturday and Sunday before the start of Jayhawk League play Tuesday against El Dorado.

Frank Leo enters his 34th season as Larks manager and talks about the upcoming 2016 season.

The Larks have six players on the roster who have played for the club in the past. Heading that list is pitcher DJ Carr. The Fort Hays State senior will be spending his fourth summer in Hays and is 4-1 with nine saves in 51 career appearances in a Larks uniform.

Joining Carr on the pitching staff is Augie Gillardo. The Eastern Michigan senior went 3-1 with a 1.63 ERA in five starts a year ago with 40 strikeouts in 32.0 innings.

Nate Olinger, who played for the Larks in 2014, is expected to highlight the Larks offense. Olinger, who was named an NCAA II All-American at Colorado School of Mines where he holds the Orediggers career record for hits, doubles and earned run average, hit .259 for the Larks two years ago with 23 RBIs and was 1-1 with one save and a 5.82 ERA in seven appearances on the mound.

There will be a new format to Jayhawk League play this season. Teams will now play the other league teams six times, three meetings in June and three in July. The league leaders in June and July both advance to the Championship Week of the NBC World Series and will also meet in a best of three series at the end of the season to determine the Jayhawk League champ.

Big 12 commish wants decision on expansion by end of summer

IRVING, Texas (AP) – Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says he’s going to push conference leaders to make decisions one way or the other on the lingering issues of expansion, a football championship game and a league network by the end of the summer.

Athletic directors spent about 90 minutes during the league’s spring meetings Wednesday in what were termed “philosophical discussions” about those topics.

The final decisions will be made by the 10-team league’s board of directors comprised of school presidents and chancellors. That group, which includes three interim presidents, will join the conference meetings Thursday and Friday and will have a significant amount of data to consider this week and into the summer.

Faculty athletic representatives deadlocked 5-5 regarding a change in a league rule that would have given former Texas Tech walk-on quarterback Baker Mayfield an extra season of eligibility at Oklahoma.
