Royals put Eibner on DL, option Gee to Triple-A Omaha

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals placed Brett Eibner on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a left ankle sprain.

Eibner injured his ankle Tuesday night while chasing down Brad Miller’s triple in the fifth inning of the Royals’ 10-5 victory over Tampa Bay.

Eibner made his big league debut Friday. And on Saturday he had two hits, including a walk-off single, in the Royals’ seven-run ninth inning to defeat the Chicago White Sox.

The Royals also optioned right-hander Dillon Gee, who was the winning pitcher Tuesday, to Triple-A Omaha. Gee gave up four runs and nine hits, including a home run, and a walk in five innings against the Rays. Gee, who was with the New York Mets the previous six seasons, is 2-2 with a 4.28 ERA in 11 games, including four starts.

The Royals recalled outfielder Reymond Fuentes, who was their opening day right fielder. He was optioned April 19 to Omaha after hitting .238 in six games when Jarrod Dyson came off the disabled list. He hit .302, scored 10 runs and stole six bases in 17 games with Omaha.

The Royals also recalled right-hander Peter Moylan, who was optioned Sunday to Omaha. Moylan was 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA with seven strikeouts in 7 1-3 innings with Kansas City.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Lorenzo Cain homered and drove in four runs as the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 10-5 on Tuesday night, extending their winning streak to a season-best five games.

The Royals, who have won six straight series, took a two-game lead in the AL Central after being seven games out and in fourth place on May 10.

Cain hit a two-run homer in the first inning and a two-run single in the five-run fifth when the Royals batted around. Cain has 23 RBIs in his past 19 games after driving in 10 runs in his first 30 games.

Kendrys Morales homered – a two-run shot in the sixth – and drove in three runs for the Royals while Eric Hosmer had three hits and drove in two runs. Hosmer is 13 for 30 with 13 RBIs on this homestand.

Royals right-hander Dillon Gee (2-2) labored through five innings to pick up the victory.

Royals OF Eibner carted off with apparent ankle injury

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City Royals rookie outfielder Brett Eibner was carted off with a lateral sprain of his left ankle in the fifth inning Tuesday night.

Eibner was injured chasing a triple by Tampa Bay’s Brad Miller. The Royals said Eibner would be evaluated more on Wednesday.

Eibner began hopping on his right foot while he retrieved the ball and flipped it to center fielder Lorenzo Cain. Eibner went down as manager Ned Yost and trainer Nick Kenney rushed to his aid. Kenney examined Eibner’s left foot and a cart was brought in to remove him.

Eibner doubled in the fourth inning to raise his average to .462 and has hit safely in all four games he has played since making his major league debut Friday. He had a walk-off single Saturday as the Royals scored seven runs in the ninth to beat the Chicago White Sox 8-7.

Jarrod Dyson replaced Eibner in left.

Royals score 7 in 9th to beat White Sox 8-7; Perez hurt

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brett Eibner’s single capped the biggest ninth-inning comeback in Kansas City Royals history, a seven-run rally off David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle that lifted the World Series champions over the Chicago White Sox 8-7 Saturday.

Kansas City’s Salvador Perez was injured in the ninth when third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert slid with a forearm and elbow into the left thigh of the All-Star catcher, who called off Chien-Ming Wang (3-0), settled under Adam Eaton’s foul popup about 30 feet from the plate near the third-base line and snagged the ball just before he was hit.

Perez immediately raised his right arm, signaling for assistance. Two minutes later, Perez hobbled off the field with his arms draped over the shoulders of manager Ned Yost and an athletic trainer.

Held to six hits through eight innings, the Royals doubled their total in the ninth and overcame a seven-run deficit for the first time since beating San Francisco on June 22, 2008. The inning included four walks, two of them intentional, and four runs scored with two outs.

Royals catcher Perez hurt, helped from field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez had to be helped off the field in the ninth inning Saturday against the Chicago White Sox after colliding with rookie third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert while catching Adam Eaton’s foul popup.

Cuthbert came sliding in and struck Perez’s lower legs. Perez went down in pain as trainer Nick Kenney and manager Ned Yost rushed to the field.

Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas and left fielder Alex Gordon collided Sunday while chasing a foul ball at Chicago and both landed on the disabled list. Gordon has a broken right wrist and is out for three to four weeks, while Moustakas tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and is likely out for the season.

Drew Butera replaced Perez.
