Lady Indians rally falls short in quarterfinals

WICHITA, Kan.-The Hays High Lady Indian soccer team ran out of time in their 4-3-2-1A State Quarterfinal match against Wichita Trinity Academy on Tuesday night in Wichita, losing 3-2.  It didn’t take Trinity long to score as Julia Rogg struck first in the 6th minute of the match.  The Lady Knights were able to tack on another goal in the 26th minute off the foot of Baylor signee,  Ally Henderson.  The lead was 2-0 at halftime.

Rogg would score again midway through the second half to give Trinity a commanding 3-0 lead.  That is when the Hays High game came to life.  Sydney Sulzman smoked one through the back of the net in the 71st minute to tally the first score for the Lady Indians.  Hays High was not done yet.  Following a hand ball in the box, Allie Rome was able to convert the penalty kick in the 78th minute.  The Lady Indians were able to get the ball deep in the Trinity zone in the final minute but were unable to get a shot on goal.

With the loss Hays High ends their season with a record of 11-7.  Trinity improves to 14-3 and will take on DeSoto in the state semi-finals on Thursday in Topeka.

Stockton’s Beougher and Osborne’s Burch place at 1A state tournament

FORT LEAVENWORTH – Stockton freshmen Brady Beougher shot a nine-over 80 to finish third at the 1A state golf tournament at Trails West Golf Course at Fort Leavenworth Monday.

Beougher opened with a 37 on the front nine and finished with a 43 on the back nine to finish three shots back of the individual champion Ryan Gfeller of Triplains.

Osborne’s Justin Burch finished in sixth after shooting an 82.

Easton Slipke from Hoxie shot an 87 to finish 11th and Dayde Mader was tied for 12th with an 88.

Hoxie finished third as a team scored of 367 and Osborne placed sixth with a 411.

Immaculata won the team title with a 347.

Hays High Indian golfers win state championship

ULYSSES – Hays High Freshman Tradgon McCrea shot a three-over 75 and the Hays High golf team won its first state championship since 1996 Monday at the Bentwood Golf Course in Ulysses.

McCrea finished one shot back of the individual champion Clete Carlson from Chanute who carded a 74.

McCrea was one of two Indians to finish inside the top ten finishing in a tie for third but finished 5th after a playoff. Payton Ruder finished ninth three shots back with a 77. Justin McCulick and Allen Zollinger each turned in rounds of 80 to finish tied for 20th.

All four earned All-State Honors.

The Indians combined to shot a 312, edging Rose Hill by three shots.

Perez has 5 hits as Royals beat Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Salvador Perez had a career-high five hits, including a double, a triple and an RBI, to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 10-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night.

Paulo Orlando added three hits and two RBIs in the rain-delayed game for the Royals, who put All-Star outfielder Alex Gordon on the disabled list on Monday with a fractured right wrist.

Ricky Nolasco (1-3) gave up six runs on eight hits and struck out three in 2 2/3 innings for the Twins (11-33), who have the worst record in the majors.

Peter Moylan (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Ian Kennedy, who gave up two runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings of a start that had to be cut short thanks to the 41-minute rain delay in the third inning.

Trego fourth, Plainville fifth at the 2A state golf tournament

SALINA – Trego’s Emmit Owens shot an 83 Monday to finish 15th and lead the Golden Eagles to a fourth place finish at the 2A state golf tournament at the Salina Country Club.

Owens fired a 41 on the front nine and followed that with a 42 on the back. Dion Reetz and Dalton Mai finished 26th and 27th each firing an 89.

Plainville’s Gunner Kerns turned in a team-high 87 to finish 21st. Tanner Copeland finished 33rd and Justin Plante was 44th.

Ellis’ Chase Hudson shot a 106 to finish 69th.

Grant Herrenbruck of Salina Sacred Heart finished first with a 74.

Sacred Heart won the team title with a 310. Trego combined to shot a 362 and Plainville finished fifth with a 365.

Royals place Gordon on DL with fractured right wrist

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – When Alex Gordon and Mike Moustakas collided while chasing a foul ball on Sunday, the Kansas City Royals gasped at the prospects of losing two All-Stars on one play.

A day later, the news could have been much worse.

Gordon was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with a fractured right wrist, but will not need surgery. Moustakas was held out of the series opener in Minnesota, but is considered day to day with a bruised knee.

The break in the scaphoid was non-displaced. Gordon is expected to miss three to four weeks.

The All-Stars were injured in a loss to the White Sox in Chicago on Sunday when they slammed into each other while chasing after a fly ball in foul territory.

The Royals recalled infielder Cheslor Cuthbert to take Gordon’s place on the roster.

La Crosse’s Herman fourth at sand greens golf tournament

TIPTON – La Crosse’s Brett Herman turned in an 83 and the Leopards golf team finished sixth at the Sand Green State Golf Tournament at the Tipton Oaks Golf Course Monday in Tipton.

Herman’s, 13-over 83 was eight shots back of the individual champion Dylan Hollerich of Tipton. Tipton also won the team title with a combined scor of 336.

Cheylin finished second with a 374. La Crosse placed sixth with a combined 424 team score.

Garrett Holopirek finished 31st, Addie Kershner 32nd and Cole Pierce placed 33rd.

TMP’s Rohr finishes fourth at 3A state tournament

SALINA – TMP’s Hayden Rohr shot a seven over 77 to finish fourth and lead the Monarchs to an eighth-place finish at the 3A state golf tournament in Salina Monday.

Rohr’s 77 was three shots behind the individual champion Troy Watson from Caney Valley and was the only Monarch in the top 20 at the Salina Municipal Course.

TMP’s Collin Werth finished 37th with an 86. Cameron Rozean finished 67th, Michael Braun was 77th and Alec Stults 78th.

Norton’s Quinton Porter finished 12th with a 79.

Fredonia was the team title with a 329. TMP combined to shoot a 352.

Maxwell transferring from Liberty to Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Liberty forward Evan Maxwell is transferring to Kansas, where the school announced Monday that he will have to sit out next season under NCAA rules.

The 6-foot-10 Maxwell played two seasons for the Flames and started all but one game last season. He was second on the team with 10 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

He had a career-high 24 points with 12 rebounds in a game against Radford in December.

Maxwell joins a highly regarded recruiting class that includes Josh Jackson, the top-ranked in the nation, five-star forward Udoka Azubuike and forward Mitch Lightfoot. Maxwell will be eligible for the 2017-18 season.

White Sox beat Royals 3-2 to avoid sweep

CHICAGO (AP) – Todd Frazier tied for the AL lead with his 13th home run, Melky Cabrera drove in two runs and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 Sunday to avoid getting swept for the first time this season.

Carlos Rodon (2-4) allowed two runs and pitched into the seventh inning for his first victory since April 13. David Robertson got three outs for his 11th save in 13 chances, helping the AL Central leaders win for just the third time in 11 games.

Lorenzo Cain and Paulo Orlando had two hits apiece for the World Series champions, who had won six of their previous eight.

Yordano Ventura (4-3) gave up three runs and six hits in six innings for the Royals, who were trying for their first road series sweep. He is 3-0 in four home starts but 1-3 in five road games.

Hays High has seven qualify for state track meet

HOLCOMB – The Hays High Indian boys track team had four individuals, in six events qualify and the Indian girls had three individuals qualify for the weekend’s state track and field championships in Wichita after performing well at the 4A regional in Holcomb.

Senior Keith Dryden qualified in both the 400 and the 100 meters. Dryden turned in the best time, among qualifiers in the 400 at the Holcomb meet and will have the top time in 4A of 49.97 second heading into the state meet. Dryden’s 100 meter time was 10.99 seconds.

Junior Shane Berens also qualified for Wichita in a pair of events. Berens has the third best throw in the discus at 168’11 and the fourth best distance in the shot put at 52’8.

Sophomore Ethan Nunnery qualified in the triple jump and has the fourth best distance in 4A at 43’11. Maddux Winter also qualified in the 100 meter hurdles with the third best time of 14.99 seconds.

The Hays High girls will have three individuals taking part in the state meet in Wichita.

Junior Marie Reveles qualified in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:27.10. Senior Haley George has the fifth best jump heading into the state meet clearing a height of 5’2.

Audra Schmeidler, also a senior, qualified for the state meet in the shot put with a throw of 37’3.25.

TMP qualifies 13 for state track meet

LYONS – The TMP-Marian track and field teams had 13 individuals qualify for the State Track and Field Championships in Wichita this coming weekend.

The Monarch boys had three individuals and the 4×800 meter relay team all qualify after the 3A regional meet in Lyons.

Senior Andrew Hess qualified in both the 1600 meters, with a time of 4:44.35 and the 3200 meters with a time of 10:33.14. Hess’ 1600 time is the fourth best among qualifiers and his 3200 time is fifth best.

Junior Hayden Lowe cleared a height of 6’2 in the high jump at Lyons to qualify for state.

The Monarchs 4×800 meter relay team will have the sixth best time heading into the state meet at 8:34.76. The team is made up of Lowe, freshman Ethan Lang, junior Trevor Pfeifer, and Hess.

The TMP girls had three individuals and a relay team qualify in six events.

Senior Melissa Pfeifer qualified in three events for TMP. Pfeifer has the fourth best time, 2:28.85 in the 800 meters, the second best time in the 1600 at 5:25.03 and the third best time in the 3200 meter at 12:25.09.

Sophomore Savannah Yost cleared a height of 5’2 in the high jump which is tied for the third best height.

Junior Kendra Werth qualified in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.60 seconds.

The Monarch 4×800 meter relay team has the sixth best time heading into the state meet at 10:28.95. The team is made up of freshman Kiara Urban, sophomore Taylor Teel, junior Alison Schibi, and Pfeifer.
