Ellis girls win region track title; area 2A athletes qualify for state

HILL CITY – The Ellis girls won the 2A Hill City regional track and field meet and qualified 11 individuals and one relay team for the State Track and Field meet in Wichita.

Alexia Deutscher qualified with the top throw of the state qualifiers in the javelin at 144’1 and in the 100 meter dash and long jump.

Ashley Mattheyer qualified in both the high jump and the 200 meter dash. Cassie Waldschmidt qualified in the 400 meters.

Kelsey Brack qualified in both the long jump and triple jump. Abby Burton also qualified in the triple jump and Haley Reiter in the discus.

The Ellis 4×100 meter relay team has the second best time at 51.35 seconds and the 4×400 meter relay team also qualified for state.

Plainville’s Shania Werner was the lone qualifier for the Cardinal girls qualifying in the long jump, 100 and 200 meter dash.

Trego had two individuals and a relay team qualify in four events. Helen Geifer qualified in both the 1600 meter and 3200 meters. Geifer’s time in the 3200 is the second best in 2A.

Cheyenne Nickelson qualified in the pole vault and the 4×800 meter relay team is also headed to state.

The Hill City girls had four individuals qualify in six events. Allyssa Miller has the top throw in the discus at 147’ and she also qualified in the shot put.

Amanda Conway qualified with the second best time the in 300 hurdles with a time of 46.81 seconds.

Madalyn Nelson qualified in the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. Lexie McDowell also qualified for state in the high jump.

Plainville boys finished third in Hill City
The Plainville boys had five individuals and a relay team qualify in eight events for the State Track and Field meet in Wichita. Plainville finished third at the Hill City Regional meet.

Hayden Friend qualified in both the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash at the 2A Hill City meet on Friday. Friend enters the state meet with the second best time, among qualifiers in the 200 meters at 23.72 seconds.

Sam Kaup also qualified in two events for the Cardinals. He has the fourth best time in the 400 meter dash at 51.87 and the 10th best time in the 200 meters.

Willie Wilkerson and Zach Pierson both qualified in the discus with the eighth and ninth best throws in 2A.

Ryan Buresh qualified in the 300 meter hurdles with the 10th best time.

The Cardinals 4×100 meter relay team will head to Wichita with the second best time in 2A at 44.87 seconds.

Hill City had four individuals qualify for the state meet.

Mike Pope in the high jump, Clay Money in the discus, Mekhai Bates in the shot put and Everett Brandyberry in the pole vault.

Area 1A state track and field qualifiers

The Victoria boys had three individual qualifiers and the 4×100 meter relay team qualify for the state tournament in Wichita after Friday’s 1A regional meet in Phillipsburg.

Collin Kisner qualified in the 100 meter and 200 meter dash and Justin Giesbrecht in the 3200 meters.

La Crosse had two individuals and two relay teams qualify for state. Clayton Herdman qualified in the 400 meters and the javelin. La Crosse also had their 4×800 and 4×400 meter relay teams qualify for state.

Stockton had four individuals in six events and two relay teams all qualify for the state meet. Kylar Williams and Brayden Winters both qualified in the 100 meter dash. Williams and Kian Coffey in the long jump. Coffey also qualified in the triple jump. Has best jump at 44’8.25. Joel Green also qualified in the 110 hurdles. Stockton’s 4×400, 4×100 relay also qualified for the state meet.

The Victoria girls had two individuals and two relay teams qualify in five events. Kali Weber qualified in both the 100 and 200 meter dash. Jayden Newbold qualified in the pole vault and the 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams also qualified for the state meet.

La Crosse had three individuals and a relay team qualify in four events. Kacee Klozenbucher qualified in both the high jump and the triple jump. Emma Rues in the 800 meters and the 4×100 meter relay team are also headed to Wichita.

The Stockton girls 4×400 meter relay team also qualified for the state meet in Wichita.

High school state baseball and softball brackets released

The Hays High Indian softball team will be the No. 8 seed and play the top seed Kansas City Piper at the 4A-D1 state tournament in Salina next week.

The Indians and KC Piper will play Thursday at 5 p.m. at Field A at the Bill Burke Complex in Salina.

The Indians enter the postseason at 10-10 after winning the Hays regional, KC Piper is 18-2.

4A-D1 State softball bracket

The TMP Marian softball team earned the No. 8 seed and will open the 3A state tournament against top seeded Southeast of Saline Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Monarchs are 17-6 and Southeast of Saline is 22-1 on the season.

The 3A state softball championship tournament will be held at the Twin Oaks Complex in Manhattan.

Ellis baseball is the No. 4 seed at 17-4 and will take on Medicine Lodge the five seed at the 2-1A state tournament in Great Bend.

The Railers and the Indians will play at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at the Great Bend Sports Complex.

Russell/Victoria is the No. 4 seed and will open with fifth seeded Goodland Thursday at 5:45 p.m. at the 4A-D2 state baseball tournament in Emporia. Russell/Victoria is 17-5 and Goodland is 17-5.

Royals activate Moustakas off DL, send Cuthbert to minors

CHICAGO (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have activated third baseman Mike Moustakas off the 15-day disabled list.

The Royals optioned Cheslor Cuthbert to Triple-A Omaha on Saturday after he hit .255 in 13 starts in place of Moustakas.

Moustakas was hitting .258 with seven home runs before a left thumb injury sidelined him this month. He went 2 for 8 with three strikeouts in two rehab games for Double-A Northwest Arkansas and rejoined the Royals on Friday.

Moustakas hit 22 homers in 2015 when he was an All-Star for the first time.

Royals get to Quintana late, beat slumping White Sox

CHICAGO (AP) — Omar Infante, Paulo Orlando and Lorenzo Cain all doubled in a three-run sixth inning off Jose Quintana to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox Friday night.

Orlando added an RBI single an inning later and Dillon Gee (1-1) allowed a run over five innings for his first victory since 2014. The Royals won for the fifth time in seven games and moved within three and one half games of the AL Central-leading White Sox.

Quintana (5-3) who entered with an AL-best 1.54 ERA, gave up one hit while facing the minimum 15 batters through five. He retired 11 straight until Infante had the first of four straight one-out hits.

Quintana was charged with a season-worst four runs and eight hits in six and one third innings.

Inman named one of three finalists for MIAA Ken B. Jones Award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State junior wrestler Jon Inman has been named a finalist for the MIAA Ken B. Jones Award for 2016, the conference’s honor for both its male and female student-athletes of the year. Inman joins Emporia State’s Brent Wilson (football) and Northeastern State’s Eric Crawford (soccer) as men’s finalists, while women’s finalists include Heavin Warner (Central Missouri – track and field), Natalie O’Keefe (Southwest Baptist – track and field), and Yanique Ellington (Lincoln – track and field).

The award, which is in its 23rd year, is named in honor of the man who served as the MIAA’s first full-time commissioner for 16 years. Jones retired in 1997 and passed away in May 2004. He was inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame in the inaugural Class of 2010.

Inman put together a very impressive junior season, earning All-America honors at 184 pounds with a fifth-place finish at nationals. He put together a staggering record of 38-4, with his only losses against Division II competition occurring at the NCAA Super Regional and NCAA Championships. Inman finished the year 25-3 against Division II wrestlers. He was the MIAA champion at 184 pounds for the second straight year.

Inman has also been impressive in the classroom for FHSU with a 3.85 GPA as a Justice Studies major. He is a three-time D2 Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic First Team selection and MIAA Scholar-Athlete recipient. Recently, Inman was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team for At-Large sports, only one of 11 selections in the region to be considered for CoSIDA Academic All-America status.

Beth Bohuslavsky of Fort Hays State women’s basketball was one of 12 women nominated for the award this year. Bohuslavsky had an impressive resume as a three-time All-MIAA performer, while carrying a 3.89 grade point average as an Elementary Education major. She helped FHSU to an amazing record of 98-25 over four years and the program’s first-ever WBCA No. 1 national ranking.

A 15-member panel of athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors – including a representative from each member institution – select the finalists.

Each nominee is judged in four areas with a certain percentage of weight going to each category: 2015-16 athletic accomplishments (45%); career academic accomplishments (25%); 2015-16 campus/community service (15%); and career athletic and service achievements (15%).

The three men and women finalists are invited to Kansas City for the MIAA Awards Ceremony, which will be held June 1 at the Truman Forum Auditorium at the Kansas City Public Library – Plaza Branch at 4801 Main Street, Kansas City, Missouri. At the event one male and one female will be announced as the winners of the Ken B. Jones Award. The awards program, begins at 7 pm.

Hays High girls’ soccer advances to state quarterfinals

TOWANDA, Kan. – The Hays High girls’ soccer team used two Sydney Sulzman goals, lengthy possession time and solid defense to upend Circle 2-1 Thursday night in Towanda. Sulzman struck for her first goal in the 30th minute from just inside the goalie box on the far right side. It did not take Circle long to answer as Jill McCoy was able to sneak one by Hays’ goalkeeper Taylor Groen-Younger.

Sulzman would strike again at the beginning of the second half to give Hays High the lead in the 43rd minute. Circle tried to mount a comeback late in the match but did not have enough fuel left in their tank to really challenge the fresh legs of Hays High.

The Indians (11-6) will now face Trinity Academy (13-3) Tuesday at 6:30 pm in Wichita. The Knights have outscored their first two opponents 21-0 including a 10-0 win over Buhler yesterday.

Ellis baseball advances to state

ELLIS-, Kan. – The Ellis baseball team has advanced to the 2-1A state tournament after a 4-1 win over Ell-Saline in their own regional final Thursday. The Railers jumped out early scoring two in the first inning then added two in the fourth for the final margin.

Clay Feik, Daniel Carbajal and Dalton Hensley each had two of the Railers 10 hits. Easton Smith picks up the win allowing the one run on four hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks.

Ellis has won six straight and improves to 15-4. They will play Thursday in the state quarterfinals in Great Bend.

The Ellis softball team lost to Republic County 13-1 Thursday in the regional championship game at the Sylvan Grove regional.

TMP-Marian girls’ soccer falls in regional final

HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian girls’ soccer season came to an end Thursday with a 2-0 loss to defending state champion Topeka Hayden in the second round of the 4-1A Central/South Central regional. The Monarchs had several scoring chances in the first half but the match which was scoreless at halftime.

The Wildcats, who beat TMP-M in last year’s state quarterfinals, scored their first goal with 25 minutes left in the second half. They would score again with 16:30 to play.

TMP-Marian ends their remarkable season at 11-4-1.

Red Sox beat Royals for split of day-night doubleheader

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Jackie Bradley Jr. and Mookie Betts homered to back a strong start by David Price, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 on Wednesday night to salvage a split of their day-night doubleheader.

The Royals won the opener 3-2 behind a strong performance by Ian Kennedy and their bullpen.

It was Price (6-1) who shined in the nightcap, allowing two runs over 7 1/3 innings. Junichi Tazawa got through the rest of the eighth before Craig Kimbrel handled a scoreless ninth for his 11th save.

The Red Sox were clinging to a 2-1 lead when they loaded the bases off Edinson Volquez (4-4) with two outs in the sixth inning. Christian Vazquez dribbled a single up the middle to score two runs, giving the Red Sox plenty of cushion the way their left-hander was pitching.

TMP-Marian softball wins own regional; headed to state

HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian softball team scored 11 runs on 15 hits and rolled to an 11-1, five inning victory over Southwestern Heights to win their own 3A regional Wednesday at the TMP-Marian Softball Complex and advance to the 3A state tournament.

Game Highlights

The Monarchs scored single runs in each of the first three innings then added four in the fourth and fifth.

Bailey Lacy went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles to lead the offensive explosion and also picked up the win in the circle. Lacy allowed the one run on two hits with 12 strikeouts and no walks. Alison Helget and Emily Schulte both had three hits. Schulte drove in three runs.

The Monarchs beat Scott City in the semifinals 12-3. They scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the second then blew the game open with a run in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Alison Helget and Brianna Romme both had three hits and Bailey Lacy drove in three. Helget picked up the win with nine strikeouts and three walks and eight hits.

The Monarchs have won four straight and six of their last seven and will take a 17-6 record in to the 3A state tournament next Thursday in Manhattan. It’s the first state tournament appearance for TMP-M since 2010 and the eighth in program history.

Hays High softball headed to state tournament

HAYS – The Hays High Indians beat Buhler and McPherson Wednesday to win the 4A-D1 Regional softball tournament at the Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex in Hays. The Indians improved to 10-10 on the season and have qualified for the state tournament next week in Salina.

Hays High hit three home runs in the championship game and come from behind to beat McPherson 14-11.

McPherson jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning as the first five hitters reached base and came in to score.

Hays would chip away at the Bullpups lead scoring one in the first and four in the third inning, highlighted by an Albany Schaffer two-run home run making it 6-5 McPherson after three innings.

After McPherson scored three in the top of the fourth to go up 9-5 the Indian bats came alive scoring eight runs on seven hits. The Indians got a pair of two-run home runs from Nicole Dinkel and Shannon Schumacher, her first of the season putting Hays up 13-9 after four innings.

Freshmen Jaysa Wichers allowed just two runs on three hits and struck out four in three and two-thirds innings to earn the win in relief.

Schaffer was two-for-two, scored three times and drove in two. Tessa Stickel was three-for-three scored twice and drove in two.

In the first game of the day, the semifinal matchup with Buhler the Indians scored six runs in the sixth inning in the 11-3 win.

Tessa Stickel was three-for-four with a two-run home run and scored three times. Albany Schaffer was also on base three times and scored three runs.

Jaysa Wichers allowed three runs on six hits and struck out seven in a complete game victory.

Hays will play in the first round of the 4A-D1 state softball tournament at Bill Burke Complex in Salina Thursday.

Hays High baseball falls in regional semifinals

McPHERSON, Kan. – Buhler scored five runs in the fifth inning to break open a one-run game and defeat the Hays High Indians 6-0 in the McPherson 4A Division I regional semifinals at the Grant Sports Complex.

Marcus Altman allowed all six runs, five earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 4 2/3 innings and suffered the loss.

The Indians (12-9) were held to three hits, two of them in the sixth inning, and had only four runners get past first base.
