NEW YORK (AP) – Brett Gardner doubled home the tiebreaking run off Kelvin Herrera in the eighth inning, and the New York Yankees overcame three home runs by Lorenzo Cain to beat the reeling Kansas City Royals 10-7 Tuesday night.

In a back-and-forth game, Kansas City rallied from deficits of 1-0, 5-3 and 7-6 as Cain tied his career high with five RBIs. Cheslor Cuthbert also homered for the Royals, who have hit six home runs in the first two games of the series.

But Gold Glove shortstop Alcides Escobar allowed Ben Gamel’s grounder to bounce off his glove for an error with one out in the eighth, and Gardner followed with a drive to left-center off Herrera (0-1) for an 8-7 lead. Starlin Castro was hit by a pitch, and Brian McCann hit a two-run double off the fence in right-center.

Aroldis Chapman, who returned from a 29-game domestic violence suspension on Monday, followed with a hitless ninth for his first Yankees save.

Young to return to Kansas City to have forearm examined

By RONALD BLUM

NEW YORK (AP) – A day after giving up a career-high five home runs, Royals pitcher Chris Young said he will return to Kansas City on Wednesday to have an MRI of his right forearm.

The right-hander is 1-5 with a 6.88 ERA and has given up 13 homers in seven starts and 32 1/3 innings this season. He told the Royals after Tuesday’s games he has been bothered by inflammation in his forearm.

Young, who turns 37 on May 25, will be examined by team physician Dr. Vincent Key. Young said he began to feel a problem with the forearm late in spring training.

Young has given up nine home runs in his last three starts. While his fastball has averaged 88 mph, up 1 mph from last year, the lack of late movement has hurt him.

MLB suspends Royals prospect Mondesi for 50 games for PED

NEW YORK (AP) – Kansas City Royals prospect Raul Mondesi has been suspended for 50 games for testing positive for clenbuterol, a banned steroid.

The penalty was announced Tuesday against the 20-year-old infielder, who is on Kansas City’s 40-man roster but had been optioned to Double-A.

Mondesi is the son of former NL Rookie of the Year Raul Mondesi. The younger Mondesi was the first player to make his big league debut in the World Series.

A positive test for a performance-enhancing drug usually results in an 80-game suspension, but Major League Baseball and the players’ union agreed to the reduced punishment after Mondesi showed the steroid came from cold medicine. Mondesi says he took the over-the-counter medication without reading the label or consulting his trainer.

He apologized and said he never intended to “take a substance that would give me an unfair advantage on the field.”

NEW YORK (AP) – Carlos Beltran hit two of New York’s five solo homers in the first three innings off an ineffective Chris Young, and Aroldis Chapman allowed a run in his Yankees debut before closing out a 6-3 victory over the slumping Kansas City Royals on Monday night.

Brian McCann, Brett Gardner and Aaron Hicks also went deep to help the Yankees win the opener of a four-game series against the defending World Series champions.

Alex Gordon and Eric Hosmer homered for the Royals, who have lost 10 of 13.

Ivan Nova gave the Yankees a good effort in his first start of the season, pitching in place of injured lefty CC Sabathia. Nova was pulled after 81 pitches – one out short of qualifying for a win – but New York’s fortified bullpen held Kansas City at bay.
