Nationals blank Royals to win fourth straight game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Gio Gonzalez and the Washington bullpen combined on a five-hitter, Ryan Zimmerman and Daniel Murphy drove in first-inning runs and the Nationals beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 on Monday night.

Gonzalez (2-1) scattered four hits and a pair of walks over six innings in his latest smooth start. He’s only allowed four earned runs combined in his first five outings.

Sammy Solis needed eight pitches for a spotless seventh, and Shawn Kelley and Oliver Perez combined to strike out three straight after a leadoff double in the eighth.

Jonathan Papelbon breezed through a perfect ninth as the Nationals followed up a sweep of the Cardinals with their fourth straight win.

HHS softball swept by Silver Lake

SILVER LAKE, Kan. – The Hays High softball team dropped a pair to Silver Lake Monday. The Indians fall 7-4 and 2-1 and are now 6-8 on the season.

The Eagles score a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 7-2 lead in the opener. The Indians rallied with two in the seventh but it wasn’t enough.

Katelyn Brown suffers the loss allowing all seven runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Nicole Dinkel had three of the Indians 16 hits. Jaysa Wichers hit a home run and drives in two. Albany Shaffer also homered.

The Indians are back at it Tuesday when they host Liberal at one o’clock. You can hear both games on KFIX beginning at 12:45 with the Hertz Rent-A-Car Pregame Show.

Hays High golf second in Great Bend

GREAT BEND, Kan. – The Hays High boys golf team finished second at the Great Bend Invitational Monday at the Stoneridge Country Club. The Indians shot a 322 and finish two behind Garden City.

Payton Ruder led the Indians with a 6-over par 77 and finished fifth. Tradgon McCrae fired an 80 and was seventh while Josh Norris placed 10th with an 82.

Monarch soccer rolls past Great Bend

HAYS, Kan. – Playing their fourth match in five games didn’t seem to slow down the TMP-Marian girls’ soccer team. The Monarchs scored 30 seconds into the match and roll past Great Bend 9-2 Monday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.

The Monarchs led 2-1 before reeling off seven unanswered goals. Kayla Vitztum and Bailey Hageman both scored two each. TMP improves to 8-2-1.

They host Bishop Carroll for Senior Day on Saturday.

Norton wins TMP-Marian Invitational

HAYS, Kan. – Norton shot a 349 and won the TMP-Marian Invitational Monday at the Smoky Hill Country Club. The Bluejays finished 26 shots ahead of second place Plainville who had a 375. Trego came in fourth and TMP-Marian fifth.

Larned’s Colton Massey was the top individual with a 78. TMP-Marian’s Hayden Rohr finished second, five shots back and was the only Monarch in the top-10.

Royals snap losing streak with win against Mariners

SEATTLE (AP) — Eric Hosmer homered, Ian Kennedy took a shutout into the sixth inning, and the Kansas City Royals ended a long scoreless streak and a five-game skid with a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

Lorenzo Cain had an RBI single and scored a run, Alex Escobar had three hits and also scored for the Royals, who had been shut out in the first two games of this series.

Kennedy gave up four hits and struck out six in five-plus innings. He loading the bases in the sixth on two singles and a walk. Danny Duffy got two quick outs before Chris Iannetta hit a run-scoring single. However, Jarrod Dyson easily threw out Robinson Cano at home trying to score a second run.

Wade Davis pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

Taijuan Walker (2-1) gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings for Seattle.

Miley, Seager lead Mariners past Royals

SEATTLE (AP) — Wade Miley scattered five hits for his first career shutout and Kyle Seager hit a three-run homer to cap a four-run first inning off an ineffective Yordano Venture and pace the Seattle Mariners to a 6-0 victory over Kansas City on Saturday night, the Royals’ fifth consecutive loss on their current road trip.

Miley (2-2) struck out four and walked none for his second complete game in 139 starts. His only other complete game was last September with Boston in a 9-2 victory over Philadelphia, when he allowed two runs and five hits.

Seth Smith, whose homer accounted for the Mariners’ only hit in a 1-0 victory Friday night, homered in the first inning, a one-out solo shot, his fourth.

The Mariners capitalized on two walks in the first off Ventura (2-1), who allowed five runs, three hits with six walks in four-plus innings.

FHSU baseball series finale at Pittsburg State cancelled due to weather related issues

PITTSBURG, Kan – Fort Hays State’s series finale at Pittsburg State was cancelled Saturday due to unplayable field conditions at Al Ortolani Field. High winds overnight disrupted the tarp on Al Ortolani Field and left standing water in the infield.

The game will not be rescheduled.

Fort Hays State will return home to close out the regular season with a three-game series against Northwest Missouri State beginning Friday night at Larks Park.

Hernandez ties Mariners win record with 1-0 decision over KC

SEATTLE (AP) — Felix Hernandez tied Jamie Moyer’s franchise record for career victories at 145 in the Seattle Mariners’ 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

Seth Smith provided the only run — and the only hit — for the Mariners, leading off the sixth inning with a home run to right off Royals starter Kris Medlen (1-2).

Hernandez (2-2), in his 11th season with the Mariners, was appearing in his 339th game, all starts. Moyer appeared in 324 games for Seattle from 1996 to 2006.

Hernandez worked 7 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, walking three and striking out four. He threw a season-high 118 pitches.

Steve Cishek pitched the ninth inning to pick up his sixth save in as many opportunities. Center fielder Leonys Martin made a game-ending catch off Salvador Perez, crashing into the wall to preserve the victory.

FHSU baseball jumps out to big early lead; evens series with Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Fort Hays State built a 9-0 lead then held on in the final ttwo innings to beat Pittsburg State 11-6 Friday at Al Ortolani Field to even their three-game MIAA series at a game each.

D.J. Carr (4-6) retired the first 11 Pitt State batters he faced and held the Gorillas scoreless until the eighth inning. Carr allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits over eight innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Connor Boyer gave up three runs on two hits without recording an out. Jackson Rolfs came in to get the final three outs and end the Gorillas rally.

The Tigers (20-26, 14-21 MIAA) capitalized on 10 walks and two hit batters and scored 11 runs on only seven hits. Connor Ross and Joe Mapes both had two hits. Mapes and Alex Weiss both drove in two runs.

FHSU scored three in the first inning, one in the second and three more in the third. They added two more in the sixth to push the lead to 9-0 and got two more across in the ninth. Pitt State (14-30, 9-26 MIAA) scored three runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

The series wraps up Saturday at noon.

TMP-Marian girls soccer wins opener at Bishop Miege Tournament

ROELAND PARK, Kan. – The TMP-Marian girls soccer team overcame a slow start and a 45 minute rain delay to beat O’Hara (Mo.) 10-0 Friday in a match called by mercy rule with five minutes to play. The Monarchs improve to 7-1-1 and will now play in the championship game Saturday at 1 pm.

Kayla Vitztum and Ashley Ostander scored goals in the first half to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead at the break. Vitztum scored in in the 45th minute to push the lead to 3-0. Aubrey Koeningsman scored a minute later off an assist from Kelsey DeWitt. Koeningsman added another goal in the 53rd on an assist from Vitztum. Bailey Hageman added back to back goals to give TMP a 7-0 lead. Madyson Koerner scored the final two goals.
