Moustakas homers, Volquez sharp through 7 innings in Royals win over Detroit

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Edinson Volquez tossed seven sharp innings, Mike Moustakas went deep and the Kansas City Royals pounded Mike Pelfrey in a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night.

Volquez (3-0) retired the first eight batters and only had to wiggle out of one jam, when Alcides Escobar let a grounder go through his legs in the fourth inning. The Tigers went on to load the bases before Volquez struck out Jarrod Saltalamacchia to end it.

Escobar atoned for his gaffe with a sacrifice fly off Pelfrey (0-3) in the bottom half of the fourth. Lorenzo Cain also drove in a run, and Kansas City tacked on another when a double-steal turned into an error on third baseman Nick Castellanos that allowed a run to scamper home.

Volquez scattered five hits and a walk while striking out five.

Monarch baseball splits with Great Bend

HAYS, Kan. – Ricky Hockett hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the TMP-Marian baseball team to a 7-5 win in game two of their doubleheader with Great Bend Thursday and split in the two games at the TMP Sports Complex.

The Monarchs scored four in the first only to see the Panthers take the lead with three in the third and two in the fifth. TMP tied the game with a run in the fifth.

Ryan Ruder struck out five and walked one and picked up the complete game win.

The Panthers built a 5-0 lead in game one and won it 5-3. The Monarchs threatened with two in the fifth and a run in the seventh.

Ricky Hockett allowed five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks and takes the loss.

TMP-Marian is now 8-4 on the year. They play at Russell/Victoria Tuesday.

TMP-Marian softball sweeps Ellinwood

ELLINWOOD, Kan. – The TMP-Marian softball team moved to 8-4 Thursday with a couple of run rule wins over Ellinwood. The Monarchs scored seven in the first inning, three in the second then put up five in the fourth and rolled to a 17-2 win in the opener.

Alison Helget had three hits including two doubles and drove in four. Bailey Lacy struck out 10 and allowed only one hit in the five inning complete game victory.

The Monarchs scored four in the first, nine in the second and seven in the third and won the second contest 20-2. Lacy drove in three and scored three times. Alison Helget struck out five with one walk on five hits for the three inning complete game win.

Hays High boys golf 3rd, TMP 7th at Dodge City

DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Hays High boys golf team finished third and TMP-Marian seventh at the Dodge City Invitational Thursday at the Mariah Hills Golf Course.

The Indians shot a 324 and finished two shots behind second place Garden City and nine back of first place Maize.

Hays placed two in the top-10 led by sophomore Allen Zollinger who finished eighth with an 8-over 79. Trey McCrae finished ninth with an 80.

TMP-Marian shot a 358 as a team but didn’t place anyone in the top-10.

TMP-Marian girls’ soccer blanks Great Bend

GREAT BEND, Kan. – The TMP-Marian girls’ soccer team picked up their fifth win of the season Thurday. The Monarchs edged Great Bend 1-0. Ashley Ostrander scored the only goal with an assist from Kayla Vitztum in the 27th minute.

Deonna Wellbrock had three saves on goal as the Monarchs pick up their sixth shutout of the season and improve to 5-1-1.

Hays High girls’ soccer defeats Liberal

HAYS, Kan. – The Hays High girls’ soccer team defeated Liberal 3-0 Thursday to move to 6-3 and 2-2 in the WAC. Jackeie Paderes scored on an assist from Sydney Sulzman in the 59th minute. Sierra Brown added a goal in the 63rd minute on an assist from Tressa Becker. Talyn Kleweno then stole the ball and scored in the 72nd minute.

Taylor Groen-Younger had two saves in goal.

The Indians are back in action at 4 pm Friday against Garden City in a makeup from Monday’s postponed match at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.

Victor Martinez collects 1,000th RBI, Tigers top KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Jordan Zimmermann made his third straight scoreless start, Victor Martinez drove in the 1,000th run of his career and the Detroit Tigers held on to beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Francisco Rodriguez served up back-to-back homers to Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez in the ninth before striking out Mike Moustakas to leave runners on first and second. It was K-Rod’s fourth save of the season and 390th overall, matching Dennis Eckersley for sixth-most on baseball’s career list.

Zimmermann (3-0) scattered seven hits and a walk over 6 1/3 innings, striking out eight, in another sharp performance. He has yet to allow a run over 19 1/3 innings.

Ian Kinsler drove the other two runs for Detroit, which did just enough against Ian Kennedy (2-1) and the Kansas City bullpen to even the series.

FHSU’s Pauls finishes 2nd at MIAA golf championships

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Lane Pauls of Fort Hays State Men’s Golf made a charge over the final two rounds at the MIAA Championships to finish in a tie for second place individually. The tournament was contested at Tiffany Greens Golf Club, a par-72 layout.

Pauls shot two consecutive rounds of 71 (1-under par) to move from eighth place after the first day to second by the end of the tournament. Pauls and tournament champion Blake Lammers of Lincoln University were the only two golfers in the field to shoot two of the three rounds under par. Pauls did it over the final two, while Lammers did it in the first and third rounds.

Lammers had the round of the tournament to win the championship on Wednesday, shooting a 4-under par 68 to run away at 6-under par overall. He was 2-under after the first round, then shot even in the second round. Pauls and Logan Gray of Central Oklahoma tied for second seven strokes back at 1-over par overall. Pauls shot rounds of 75, 71, and 71, while Gray shot rounds of 74, 72, and 71.

Fort Hays State took 11th as a team, shooting a three-round total of 959. Koby Beougher was 47th with rounds of 88, 74, and 80. Cash Hobson was 50th with rounds of 80, 84, and 88. Seve Sites and Kade Megaffin finished in a tie for 53rd, each with a total of 259. Sites shot 98, 77, and 84, while Megaffin shot 92, 82, and 85. Megaffin figured into the team scoring in all three rounds.

Central Oklahoma won the tournament as a team, shooting 882. Lindenwood was nine strokes back at 891 and Central Missouri was third at 892. Central Oklahoma also won the regular season team title with 52 points over the four sanctioned MIAA events for the season. Central Missouri was second with 49 points.

FHSU women’s golf finishes 7th at MIAA Championships

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Women’s Golf completed its 2015-16 season on Wednesday at the MIAA Championships. The Tigers finished seventh out of the nine teams competing. The tournament was held at Swope Memorial Golf Course.

The Tigers shot 1053 over three rounds as a team. Northeastern State, the 11th-ranked team in the nation, won the tournament with a 922 total. Central Oklahoma, ranked 25th in the nation, finished second at 942. The RiverHawks prevented the Bronchos from claiming a fourth consecutive MIAA Championship.

Hannah Perkins led the Tigers overall, tying for 24th. She shot rounds of 87, 85, and 85 for a total of 257. Hannah Karasiuk was one stroke behind in 26th with rounds of 87, 84, and 87. Kelsey McCarthy had the best round on the team in the second round with an 83, which she surrounded with an 88 and 91 to finish in a tie for 29th. Kylie McCarthy rounded out the scorers for FHSU with rounds of 94, 92, and 90 to finish 38th. Hadley Tharp finished 44th with rounds of 97, 94, and 94.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas quarterbacks Montell Cozart and Deondre Ford were granted hardship waivers Wednesday after sustaining injuries last season, giving both redshirt juniors two years of eligibility remaining.

Cozart started three of the first four games before sustaining a season-ending shoulder injury in a game against Iowa State. He was 66 of 105 for 752 yards with two touchdowns while running for another touchdown.

Ford appeared in two games before a season-ending thumb injury.

The quarterback job appears to be wide open heading into next season. Ryan Willis started when Cozart and Ford went down, but he’s been dealing with a wrist injury. Young prospects Carter Stanley and Keaton Perry have also shown promise, though both were inconsistent during spring practices.

Kansas opens its season September 3rd against Rhode Island.

Flax leaving TMP-Marian for Russell

After 20 years as Athletic Director at TMP-Marian High School, Gene Flax will be leaving at the end of May. According to the school’s website, Flax will be taking over as Athletic Director at Russell High School.

Flax joined the staff at TMP-Marian in 1996. In addition to being the school’s Athletic Director, he was the head football coach for 14 years guiding the Monarchs to the state playoffs twice. He also served an an assistant coach for the Kansas Shrine Bowl. Flax was also spent time as the Monarchs head track and field coach as well as an assistant. He also taught P.E., weightlifting as well as drivers’ education.

“I’m just an average Joe,” Flax quipped when asked about his time at TMP-Marian. “I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to serve at TMP-Marian for twenty years.”

TMP-Marian administration will begin a search for a new activities and athletics director.
