Hays High’s Albany Schaffer signs with Louisiana-Monroe

Schaffer Signing

By Dustin Armbruster

It was a long process but, after a number of school visits, it is done. On Tuesday, Albany Schaffer made her decision official, signing to play volleyball for the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

Schaffer goes down as one of the best to play in the history of the Hays High volleyball program. She holds the school record for digs in a single season with 542 her sophomore season. She also holds the second, third and fourth spots on that list, as well. Despite missing seven matches her senior season, she still finished with 508 digs for the second spot. 482 digs her junior year ranks third while her freshman campaign led to 367 digs to land fourth on the list.

Albany Schaffer

Schaffer was twice named the Western Athletic Conference player of the year, earning the honor in 2014 and 2015. She was also named Honorable Mention as a sophomore. Schaffer was named to the All-State Honorable Mention team following her senior season.

Schaffer heads to Monroe, La., to join the Division 1 program as a DS/Libero. The Warhawks went 14-18 last year and compete in the Sun Belt Conference.

Christin Nunnery

Hays High finished 29-8 this past season. Schaffer joins three other seniors to sign with collegiate programs for volleyball. Kylie Brown and Madison Prough both signed with Fort Hays State University. Taylor Groen-Younger will play at Pratt Community College.

Kansas State freshman Freeman transferring

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Kansas State forward Ron Freeman has elected to transfer after seeing little action as a freshman.

Wildcats coach Bruce Weber announced the decision Tuesday.

The 6-foot-5 Freeman only appeared in 11 games, averaging less than one point and one rebound, and intends to sign a letter of intent with Northwest Florida State College when the spring signing period opens.

Kansas State experienced a massive roster turnover last offseason, when leading scorer Marcus Foster and backups Tre Harris and Malek Harris were dismissed from the program. Starting point guard Jevon Thomas and fellow guard Nigel Johnson also transferred to other schools.

The Wildcats were 5-13 in the Big 12 and 17-16 overall last season.

Chiefs defensive end Mike DeVito retires after 9 NFL seasons

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Mike DeVito is retiring after nine NFL seasons.

DeVito, 31, announced his retirement Monday on Twitter, saying it was his wife, Jessie, who was most influential in his decision. The couple is expecting a second child.

DeVito says: “I have people here that will expect me to be here and be a father and be a husband and a leader of my family.”

Known for his leadership in the locker room and his versatility – he played three positions on the line in 2012 – DeVito spent his first six seasons with the New York Jets, twice going to the playoffs. He then joined the Chiefs for the last three seasons, but appeared in only one game in 2014 after tearing his Achilles tendon.

DeVito had a career-high three sacks last season as the Chiefs rallied from 1-5 to make the playoffs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Speedy pinch runner Terrance Gore streaked home on a wild pitch with two outs in the 10th inning, scoring with a headfirst slide to lift the Kansas City Royals over the winless Minnesota Twins 4-3 Sunday.

The World Series champion Royals rallied for two runs in the ninth to tie it, then dropped the Twins to 0-6. This is Minnesota’s worst start since the Washington Senators moved to the Twin Cities in 1961.

Christian Colon drew a leadoff walk in the 10th from Trevor May (0-1). Gore then made his first appearance of the season, running for Colon, and dashed to third on May’s throwing error on a pickoff attempt.

May retired the next two batters and issued a walk. With a 1-2 count on Lorenzo Cain, May threw a breaking ball that bounced off catcher John Ryan Murphy’s chest protector and skittered to the right side of the plate.

Gore beat Murphy’s throw to May covering the plate. May slammed down his hand in frustration after Gore scored.

The Twins scored two runs in the sixth, then after Mike Moustakas hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning, answered with a Brian Dozier home run to go up 3-1.

Lorenzo Cain singled with one out in the ninth and scored on an Eric Hosmer triple. Kendrys Morales knocked in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to deep right field.

Wade Davis pitched the 10th and picked up the win. Starter Edinson Volquez allowed two runs on eight hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks in 5 2/3 innings.

The Royals are on the road for the first time Monday as they begin a four-game series in Houston.
