FHSU women tabbed No. 3 in first NCAA region rankings

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State Women’s Basketball is ranked No. 3 in the first set of NCAA Regional Rankings, released on Wednesday. The top three teams in the region are from the MIAA as the picture for NCAA Tournament selections starts to take shape.

Fort Hays State, the host of the NCAA Central Region last year as the top ranked team in the region, finds itself in good position once again entering the final two weeks of the regular season schedule. The Tigers are third behind Missouri Western and Pittsburg State. Pittsburg State and Fort Hays State are dead even with the Griffons in amount of wins against in-region and Division II competition this year. PSU is 20-4 and FHSU is 20-3, while MWSU is 20-2.

Though FHSU has one less loss than Pittsburg State, the Gorillas have a win over the top ranked team in the region. FHSU lost its only meeting with MWSU this year, while PSU met MWSU twice in the regular season and split the series 1-1. FHSU and PSU do not have a head-to-head advantage against each other as the schools split their regular season games.

With Winona State at 21-2 against NCAA Division II opponents and 18-2 against in-region opponents, the rankings show the strength of the MIAA schedule compared to the NSIC and GAC. Arkansas Tech was 19-2 against Division II competition at the time this poll released, but its loss on Monday was not factored into this set of rankings.

Emporia State is the fourth team from the MIAA inside the top eight of the region rankings at No. 6. A cluster of teams from the NSIC round out the remainder of the list.

Below are the NCAA Central Region rankings for February 17, 2016.

Additional netting being added to Kauffman Stadium

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals have announced that additional netting at Kauffman Stadium is being installed and will extend toward the outfield end of each team’s dugout.

The idea is to improve the safety for fans sitting along the foul lines.

Several clubs have considered ways to protect fans from foul balls hit into those seats, and some have suggested that similar netting should be mandatory in major league ballparks.

Record five Tigers named to Don Hansen All-America football team

FHSU Athletics

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Fort Hays State had five players named to the Don Hansen All-America Team for the 2015 season on Tuesday (Feb. 16). The five selections marks a new school record in the program’s NCAA Division II era for number of All-America selections in one season. Brock Long earned third-team honors at linebacker, while quarterback Treveon Albert, running back Shaquille Cooper, offensive lineman Matt Erbert and safey Daniel Lindsey were all named honorable mention.

Fort Hays State went 8-4 in 2015, tying the school record for wins in a season, and earned a bid to the Mineral Water Bowl, the program’s first postseason game since 1996.

Long is the only one of the group with multiple All-America selections in 2015, including first-team honors from two organizations. Long had one of the greatest all-around seasons at linebacker for FHSU. He set a new school record for tackles in a season with 171. It passed the former mark of 164 set by Alex Whitehill in 2011. Aside from the tackles, he finished with 21.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, and four forced fumbles.

Albert was one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the nation with both his arm and legs. He finished the season with 1,752 passing yards and 1,228 rushing yards. He finished with the most rushing yards by a quarterback for a single season in FHSU history and fifth most rushing yards in a season overall. He finished his career with 8,111 yards of total offense, setting a new school record. He also set the FHSU career passing touchdowns mark at 55. With 2,399 career rushing yards, he finished seventh on the all-time chart at FHSU. He finished third on the career passing chart with 5,712 yards.

Joining Albert in one of the best rushing combinations nationally was sophomore Shaquille Cooper. He finished the year with 1,441 rushing yards, the third-most in a single season at FHSU. Cooper averaged 120.1 rushing yards per game and he also hauled in a team-high 37 passes for 309 receiving yards. He finished the year with 1,753 all-purpose yards, averaging 146.1 per game.

Erbert adds the All-America honor to a pair of all-region selections this year. Erbert anchored the offensive line at left tackle, helping the Tigers average 251.1 rushing yards per game.

Lindsey finished the 2015 season with 85 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, and four blocked kicks. He also was a huge asset on kick returns, setting a new single-season record for kick return touchdowns at FHSU with two. He averaged 27.9 yards per kick return with a total of 390 yards.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Wayne Selden Jr. scored 18 points, Landen Lucas added 14 points and 10 rebounds, and second-ranked Kansas rolled to a 94-67 victory over Oklahoma State on Monday night.

Perry Ellis shrugged off a sluggish start to finish with 15 points, and Frank Mason III had 14 for the balanced Jayhawks (22-4, 10-3 Big 12), who avenged a surprising loss to the Cowboys last month.

Oklahoma State (12-13, 3-10) led much of the first half, fell behind by 18 early in the second, then trimmed their deficit to 62-56 with about 11 minutes to go. But the Jayhawks got hot down the stretch, pulling away for a lopsided victory over coach Bill Self’s alma mater.

The Jayhawks finished the first half on a 30-9 run. They finished the second on a 32-11 run.

Jeff Newberry scored 19 points and Jeffrey Carroll had 13 for the Cowboys, who again played without leading scorer Jawun Evans.

Baker gets 100th win; Wichita State tops New Mexico State

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Ron Baker scored 13 points to move up Wichita State’s career scoring list and the Shockers beat New Mexico State 71-41 Monday night in a rare February non-conference matchup.

Baker moved into 12th place in program history with 1,503 points. He also became the fifth Shocker to reach 100 career wins.

Fred VanVleet added 12 points with seven assists for Wichita State (19-7), which rebounded after having its 43-game home winning streak come to an end last Saturday. The Shockers forced 20 turnovers and held the Aggies to 16-of-40 shooting.

Conner Frankamp nailed a deep 3-pointer with two seconds left before halftime to extend Wichita State’s lead to 37-24.

Pascal Siakam recorded his 22nd double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds for New Mexico State (18-9), which had its nine-game winning streak halted.

The game was originally scheduled for Dec. 28 but it was postponed when winter weather caused travel issues for the Aggies.
