KU’s Graham named Big 12 Player of the Week

Big 12 Release

IRVING, Texas – Big wins over top 25 opponents helped Devonte’ Graham garner Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Graham is presented player accolade for the first time in his career.

Graham was a key in the Jayhawks’ 2-0 week as Kansas recorded victories over two top 10 opponents. The Raleigh, North Carolina guard’s best performance came at No. 3 Oklahoma as he scored a career-high 27 points on 8-of-13 (.615) shooting, including 6-of-9 (.667) from 3-point range. Graham had 16 points in the final eight minutes of the contest and also turned in a stellar performance on the other end of the court as the primary defender on OU standout Buddy Hield. Graham averaged 18.5 points and 3.5 rebounds for the week while converting 57.9 percent of his shots from the field, 61.5 percent from beyond the arc and 87.5 percent from the free throw line.

Graham is second Jayhawk to be named Big 12 Player of the Week in 2015-16. Wayne Selden, Jr. was the co-player of the week Nov. 30 after earning co-MVP accolades at the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.

Tiger baseball splits Sunday doubleheader with Regis

FHSU Athletics

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State split a pair of games on Sunday (Feb. 14) against Regis University. Regis won the first game 11-6 before FHSU was able to salvage the final game of the three-game weekend series. FHSU moved to 3-3 overall on the season, while Regis starts its year at 2-1.

Regis 11, Fort Hays State 6
Regis put four runs on the board in a hurry in the first game, opening with two singles, a hit batter, and then a grand slam. FHSU starter Kyhle Vogt shook off the rough start and held Regis scoreless over the next two innings. He ran into more trouble in the mid-innings as Regis scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth, and was responsible for the first run scored in the sixth.

FHSU could not put up much resistance against Regis starter Chris Quackenbush in the early going. The Tigers took advantage of a Regis error in the fourth to plate two runs, but Quackenbush went 6.0 strong innings not allowing an earned run. He handed the ball over to the bullpen before the start of the seventh with a 10-2 lead.

The Tigers touched up Regis’ first reliever Jake Griffith for four runs in just two-thirds of an inning, bringing the margin to 10-6, but that was the last of the run scoring for FHSU. Relievers Casey Kennedy and Nick DiPaola combined to throw the final 2.1 innings with just three hits allowed. Regis added an insurance run in the ninth.

Austin Unrein had three RBI in the game with his first home run of the season, a three-run shot in the four-run seventh for FHSU. Clayton Basgall had a two-RBI single in the fourth, and Caleb Cherryholmes tallied an RBI single in the seventh.

Fort Hays State 9, Regis 4
Fort Hays State took an early advantage in the second game when Connor Ross drove home a run in the first inning. It was the start of a four-RBI game for Ross as he recorded three hits in the contest.

Regis came back with three runs in the third, all uneared, but the Tigers answered with two in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run home run by Joe Mapes, who also had three hits in the game.

Both teams scored runs in the fifth before FHSU broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh on a Ross RBI single. The floodgates came open in the eighth as Austin Unrein started a four-run rally with an RBI single. Mapes followed with an RBI double and Ross drove home two with another single.

Justin Hersch allowed only one earned run over 4.2 innings of work in his start. He gave up seven hits and two walks, but struck out four. Jackson Rolfs entered and worked 2.1 innings to move to 2-0 on the season. He allowed only two hits and struck out two. With FHSU leading 5-4, Giles Fox saved the win for Rolfs entering in the eighth to keep a runner stranded on the base paths. Fox went 2.0 innings and struck out four to earn his first save of the season.

Alex Weiss, like Ross and Mapes, recorded three hits in the game and had one RBI in the fifth to get the game tied at 4-4.

Fort Hays State has four games scheduled on the road next week. The Tigers head to Oklahoma-Panhandle State on Wednesday before traveling to Golden, Colo., to take on Colorado Mines over the weekend.

Duran hurls 1-hit shutout; Tiger softball splits on day 2 of 8-State Classic

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Fort Hays State softball got its first win of the season, splitting a pair of games at the 8-State Classic on Saturday (Feb. 13). The Tigers won their first game of the day over Minnesota-Duluth 4-0, but fell to Arkansas Tech 7-5 and now tote a record of 1-3 this young season.

Fort Hays State 4, Minnesota-Duluth 0
Paxton Duran claimed a shutout win in the circle and helped herself at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double, a run, and a stolen base. Claudia Vazquez was key table-setter at the top of the lineup reaching base three times with a single and two walks. Tori Beltz had two RBI on a single, while Chermayne Yogo and Samantha Villarreal also had RBI singles.

All four Tiger runs came in the fourth inning. With one out Erin Elmore walked and Ashley Beavers came in to pinch run and stole second. Duran then hit a ball that the pitcher couldn’t field cleanly, advancing Beavers to third.  Duran then stole second, giving the Tigers two runners in scoring position with just one out. Rilee Krier walked to load the bases. A force out off the bat of Vazquez left the bases loaded with two outs. Yago then recorded her RBI with a base knock to left and Beltz followed up with her two RBI single in the next at bat. Villarreal then laced a ball into left field scoring Yago for the fourth run of the inning.

That was all the help Duran needed on her way to the complete game shutout. Duran allowed only one hit and three walks, while recording seven strikeouts in her first win of the season.

Arkansas Tech 7, Fort Hays State 5
The Tigers made a late push but fell two runs short to Arkansas Tech by a score of 7-5. Carrie Clark bounced back from a rough start Friday holding the Golden Suns to two runs over the first three innings,  but ran into trouble in the fourth and fifth. She went the distance giving up seven hits, six earned runs, and six walks, while getting one strikeout.

Arkansas Tech wasted no time scoring as they got a run in the very first inning. A single by the leadoff hitter Alex Edinger started the game and she eventually came in on a groundout later in the inning.

The Tigers fought back in the third. A single by Vazquez followed by a double from Yago put Fort Hays State in ideal position with runners at second and third with no outs. After a fly ball that wasn’t deep enough to score the runner from third, Samantha Villarreal grounded out to the right side recording an RBI to tie the game. An error on the Golden Suns’ third baseman off the bat of Kylie Strand allowed Yago to score and gave the Tigers the 2-1 lead.
The lead did not last long for the Tigers as Arkansas Tech came right back in the bottom half and knotted the game up at 2-2 after a walk, error, and RBI single.

The Golden Suns did not let up from there, scoring twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth. Samantha Herweck had four of the five RBI for ATU in that stretch. The Tigers found themselves trailing 7-2 going into their last at bat, but they did not go down without a fight.

Yago led the inning off the seventh with a walk followed by a Beltz single. After a fly out from Villarreal, Strand launched a pitch over the fence in centerfield, cutting the lead to 7-5. That was all the damage for the half inning as the next two batters were retired.

The Tigers were supposed to play two games on Sunday, but due to weather forecasts, Sunday’s play was cancelled. Next up for the Tigers will now be a trip to St. Cloud, Minn., where they will take part in the Kelly Laas Memorial Tournament starting on Thursday.

Tiger baseball falls in home opener

FHSU Athletics

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State baseball dropped its home opener to Regis University on Saturday (Feb. 13) by the score of 9-2. With the loss the Tigers now sit even on the season with a 2-2 record. Regis claimed its first game of the season, going to 1-0.

Tiger starting pitcher DJ Carr suffered his first loss of the season going just four innings. He gave up eight runs (six earned) on nine hits with just one strikeout and one walk. Will Amen, Clayton Basgall and Connor Boyer did well in relief allowing just three hits and one run over the final four innings.

The Fort Hays State bats struggled during the chilly afternoon in Hays, collecting just two runs on five hits. A highlight of the offense was Joe Mapes’ second home run of the season, which he blasted down the right field line in the fourth inning. Brad Thoutt picked up the win for the Rangers going six strong innings, giving up just two runs on three hits while walking five and striking out three. Will Waterman recorded the three-inning save by allowing just two hits and striking out four.

Oklahoma State outlasts Kansas State in overtime

By JOHN TRANCHINA

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Tavarius Shine came off the bench to score 11 points, five in overtime, to lead Oklahoma State to an 58-55 victory over Kansas State on Saturday.

Leyton Hammonds led the Cowboys (12-13, 3-9 Big 12) with 13 points, while adding six rebounds, as his team snapped a three-game losing streak. Oklahoma State had lost nine of its previous 11, with five of those defeats decided by five points or fewer.

Justin Edwards scored 14 points and posted 13 rebounds to lead Kansas State (14-11, 3-9).

Oklahoma State nearly won it at the end of regulation, as it appeared that Jeff Newberry hit a 3-pointer from half court just as the buzzer sounded. The officials called it good, but a video review showed that Newberry released the ball a split second after the clock expired, overturning the verdict.

Kansas State missed four shots in the final 15 seconds of overtime.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Klint Carlson scored 12 points, Wyatt Lohaus had 11 and Northern Iowa held on to beat No. 25 Wichita State 53-50 on Saturday, ending the Shockers’ nation-leading 43-game home winning streak.

The Panthers (16-11, 8-6 Missouri Valley) blew a 15-point second-half lead before pulling back ahead on consecutive baskets by Lohaus with about 6 minutes left in the game.

The Shockers (18-7, 12-2) got within 53-50 when Shaq Morris made the second of two free throws with 40.2 seconds left, then got the ball back when Wes Washpun had his shot blocked with 10 seconds to go.

Ron Baker missed a potential tying 3 at the other end, but the ball bounced off a Northern Iowa player out of bounds. Given another chance, the Shockers got the ball to Connor Frankamp in front of his own bench, but his 3-pointer bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

TMP takes two in Phillipsburg

By JEREMY McGUIRE

Girls:  TMP 77, Phillipsburg 54

TMP fell behind early in Phillipsburg on Friday night but quickly made up their ground.  After trailing 6-2 after a couple of Katelyn Swanson three pointers TMP scored seven in a row to take a 9-6 lead and would never trail again. The Lady Monarchs led 15-12 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 35-28 at halftime.

The third quarter was big for TMP. The Lady Monarchs outscored Phillipsburg 26-12 in the third quarter to take a commanding lead heading to the fourth and picked up the 77-54 win.  Tatum Bartels led the Lady Panthers with 21 points.  Swanson added 11.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Boys:  TMP 59, Phillipsburg 49

Peyton Hoffman led TMP with 13 points to help beat upset minded Phillipsburg on Friday night.  The Monarchs were playing in front of an excited Panther fan base as the game tipped off and it only got louder.  Phillipsburg used a late three pointer to take a 17-12 after the first quarter.

The Panthers would extend the lead to 23-12 early in the second quarter before TMP kicked things into.  The Monarchs would end the half on a 19-5  run to take the lead at the break 31-28.  TMP was able to stretch the lead to as many as eight a couple of times in the fourth quarter but Phillipsburg refused to wilt away.

The Panthers cut the lead to one early in the fourth quarter and TMP responded with five straight points to stretch the lead to six.  That proved to be enough cushion as the Monarchs won 59-49.  Phillipsburg sees their four game win streak come to an end.  TMP improves to 13-3 on the season and keeps an unblemished Mid Continent League record at 7-0.  The will go out of conference and host Great Bend on Tuesday.
