Isaiah Blackmon signs with Fort Hays State Football

A third Hays High Indian signed his letter of intent to play football for the Tigers of Fort Hays State University on Friday. Isaiah Blackmon said the disappointment of seeing his senior season come to a close was replaced by realization that he still had a chance to play football after talking with the coaches at FHSU. Blackmon spent parts of the last two seasons as a starter on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

As a running back, Blackmon rushed for 625 yards on just 155 carries and scored nine touchdowns. Blackmon was also a key blocker in the passing attack. Defensively he totaled 124 tackles, ten for loss, in his career. Blackmon’s career numbers include two sacks, caused four fumbles and recovered two.

He ranked 8th in the Western Athletic Conference in tackles and second in forced fumbles. He was given Honorable Mention status by the WAC coaches his senior season.

Tigers road woes continue, fall short at Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Pittsburg State shot 64-percent in the first half and 57-percent for the game, handing Fort Hays State their sixth straight road loss, 101-92 Thursday night at John Lance Arena. The Gorillas (13-11, 8-10 MIAA) used an early 10-0 run following a Craig Nicholson 3-pointer and led for all but 46 seconds.

Fort Hays State (15-8, 9-8 MIAA) trailed by 14 at the half and by 16 early in the second half. They pulled within five on two different occasions, the last with 5:51 to play, but the Gorillas answered with a 7-1 run in handing the Tigers their sixth straight road loss.

FHSU shot 52-percent from the floor including 9-of-18 from beyond the arc but allowed Pitt to shoot 57-percent and were outrebounded by 18.

Craig Nicholson scored a season-high 22 along with 11 assists and four steals. Jake Stoppel added 18, Rob Davis 16 and Hadley Gillum 12.

Trey Starks scored a career-high 28 to lead the Gorillas.

The game saw 53 combined fouls and 67 free throws, 36 of them by Pitt State.

PITTSBURG, Kan. – No. 23 Pittsburg State hit their first eight shots in building an 11-point lead then held off every challenge by Fort Hays State for a 79-69 win over the fifth-ranked Tigers (20-3, 14-3 MIAA). The Gorillas (20-4, 14-4 MIAA) have now won nine straight and have won the last seven at home over the Tigers.

The Gorillas, who never trailed in the game, went on an early 13-4 run to go up 11. The Tigers closed within two early in the second quarter and trailed by four at the half. The Gorillas used an 11-1 second half run to go up 16 early in the fourth quarter and never let the Tigers closer than six the rest of the way.

The Tigers, who shot 39-percent for the game including 4-of-18 from beyond the arc, were led by Chelsea Mason’s 15 points and nine rebounds. Beth Bohuslavsky added 14 and Jill Faxon 11.

Mikaela Burguss, who hit her first four 3-point attempts, led the Gorillas with 21 points. Hayden Herlocker and Paige Lungwitz both scored 14, Cathy Brugman 12 and Kylie Gafford 11.

Freeman, Prince lead No. 21 Baylor past K-State

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Al Freeman scored 21 points, Taurean Prince had 18 and No. 21 Baylor beat cold-shooting Kansas State 82-72 on Wednesday night to remain a game back of the leaders in the Big 12 race.

Playing without leading rebounder Rico Gathers due to illness, the Bears (18-6, 7-4) opened on an 8-2 run, led by as many as 14 in the first half and never trailed the rest of the way.

The Wildcats (14-10, 3-8) were 2 of 14 from beyond the arc, getting their only 3s from Justin Edwards in the final minute. His first made it 72-65 with 58.3 seconds left, and his second after two free throws by Baylor’s Ishmail Wainwright made it 74-68 with 47.4 seconds remaining. They weren’t enough to bail out the Wildcats, though.

Edwards finished with 19 points, while D.J. Johnson had a career-high 19 points to go with eight rebounds for the Wildcats.

FHSU weekend baseball series with Regis moving to Hays

Fort Hays State baseball has made adjustments in its schedule for the coming weekend. Instead of heading to the Denver area to play three games against Regis University and one against Colorado Mines, a three-game series with Regis will now be played in Hays on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 13-14). The series has moved due to lingering snow and moisture at Regis’ baseball facility.

Fort Hays State and Regis will start the series with one game on Saturday at Larks Park beginning at 3 pm. The teams will return on Sunday to play a doubleheader starting at 12 pm. All games of the 3-game series will be 9-inning contests.

The game scheduled with Colorado Mines this week has been removed from the schedule.

No. 25 Wichita State pounds Drake

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Ron Baker and Shaq Morris had 11 points each and No. 25 Wichita State pounded Drake 74-48 on Tuesday night for its 12th win in 13 games.

Thirteen players scored for the Shockers (18-5, 12-1 Missouri Valley Conference), who moved within two victories of clinching at least a share of its third straight league title.

Wichita State had little trouble with the Valley’s worst team, rattling off a 27-5 run to close the first half in beating the Bulldogs for the ninth straight time.

Reed Timmer scored 20 points for Drake (6-19, 1-12), which lost for the 15th time in 17 games.

No. 6 Kansas beats No. 10 West Virginia

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Perry Ellis had 21 points, Landen Lucas pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds and No. 6 Kansas beat No. 10 West Virginia 75-65 on Tuesday night to forge a three-way tie atop the Big 12.

Frank Mason III added 14 points for the Jayhawks (20-4, 8-3), who handled the Mountaineers’ pressure well in avenging a loss lost month in Morgantown that had them playing catch-up in the league race.

Now, they are tied with the Mountaineers (19-5, 8-3) and No. 3 Oklahoma (20-3, 8-3) as they pursue their 12th consecutive championship. All three teams have seven games remaining.

Devin Williams had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Jaysean Paige also had 14 points for the Mountaineers – though their leading scorer was just 5 of 16 from the field.

TMP Boys win 4OT thriller, Girls cruise

Boys:  TMP 69, Scott City 66  4OT

In what would be by man an instant classic the TMP Monarchs outlasted the visiting Scott City Beavers in four overtimes on Tuesday night at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.  It was a game that saw the largest lead of only seven points (for Scott City) and had five starters foul out between the two teams.  In the end, TMP stood strong for the win.

Just like many predicted it was a nip and tuck game the entire way.  Scott City led by four, 12-8 after the first quarter. It was a two point game late in the first half when the Beavers hit a late three to take a 28-23 lead at the break.

Scott City bolted out of the gates in the second half and led 32-25.  TMP would score the next seven points to tie the game at 32.  The Beavers would take a 38-34 lead heading to quarter number four.

It was back and fourth in quarter number four.  TMP trailed by three late when Scott City’s Bo Hess missed two free throws and TMP came the other way and Jared Vitztum, who finished the game with 33 points, hit a three to send the game to overtime number one tied a 51.

Both teams scored two points in the first overtime and went scoreless in the second overtime.  The third overtime started with a 53-53 tie when Ryan Ruder hit a three pointer from the right wing to give TMP their first lead of the game.  TMP was able to extend the lead to four points but Scott City battled back and eventually tied the game at 62 to force a fourth overtime.

In the fourth overtime TMP was able score five straight points to go up 67-64 after the Beavers went up by two early in overtime number four.  The Monarchs hit some big free throws down the stretch and picked up the 69-66 win. TMP is now 12-3 on the season and will be on the road in Phillipsburg on Friday night.

TMP started out their non-league match-up with Scott City on Tuesday night with a 22-0 run and never looked back. The Lady Monarchs led 28-4 after the first quarter, 42-13 at halftime, 70-28 after three quarters and won 80-54. Madyson Koerner led three Lady Monarchs in double figures with 17 points.

TMP improves to 13-2 on the season.  The Lady Monarchs will be on the road in Phillipsburg on Friday night.

Hays High splits games at Salina Central

GIRLS: Salina Central 63, Hays 35
Hays traveled to Salina on Tuesday night to take on the Central Mustangs. The match-up had three of the four featured team ranked in the state. The Salina Central girls was ranked #2 in 5A this week. The Salina Central boys entered #4 in 5A and the Hays High boys #6 in 4A-1.

The Lady Indian defense tried to do enough to slow down a high scoring Central team in the first half but couldn’t get their offense in gear. Hays managed just two points in the first quarter trailing 12-2 after the first eight minutes. Hays started hitting shots in the latter half of second quarter only to be matched by the Lady Mustangs. Hays made their last three field goals of the half after starting 2-20 and trailed 26-14 at the mid-game break.

Highlights


Hays fell behind by 17 in the opening moments of the third quarter but put together their best run of the game cutting the lead down to 8 after scoring nine straight points. Hays had four more opportunities to cut into a 33-23 score but scored just one points. Central led by 14 after three quarters at 38-24. The Lady Mustangs exploded for 25 fourth quarter points to pull away with a 63-35 win.

Neither Hays or Salina Central led by more than four points in the first half as they played to a 26-22 Hays advantage at half time. Each team led by four points with Central taking an early 4-0 lead followed by two Hays four point leads at 24-20 and 26-22. Central led by three after the first quarter 17-14. The Hays defense clamped down allowing just five second quarter points while scoring 12. The Indians closed the second quarter on a 8-2 run on a three pointer from each Isaiah Nunnery and Ethan Nunnery and then two free throws from Ethan.

Highlights

Hays used a pair of 9-2 runs in the third quarter to build a 17 point lead late in the third quarter. Central would knock a basket down at the buzzer to cut the lead down to 15 at 47-32. The Hays Indians turned the ball over nine times in the fourth quarter to allow Salina Central to close the gap. Central used a 9-0 run over two minutes of the fourth quarter to get with in five at 56-51 with ninety seconds remaining. Hays scored immediately off of the basket by Salina Central to push the lead back up to seven and hit four of six free throws and a layup over the final 1:30 to secure the 64-53.

FHSU women return to top-5 in latest WBCA rankings

Losses last week by Ashland (Ohio) and West Texas A&M have allowed the Fort Hays State women’s basketball team to move back into the top-five of the latest USA Today/WBCA rankings. The Tigers move up two spots to No. 5.

It’s their second No. 5 ranking this season and seventh week in the top-10. FHSU remains the highest ranked team from the MIAA with Missouri Western moving up one spot to No. 8 and Emporia State dropping five spots to No. 21. Pittsburg State, who rallied to beat the Hornets in Emporia Saturday, are in at No. 23.

The Tigers play at Pittsburg State Thursday.
