TMP Girls and Boys advance to MCL Title Game

By JEREMY McGUIRE

Girls:  TMP 71, Stockton 48

TMP used a 14-2 run to end the first quarter to take control of Friday night’s Mid Continent League Tournament semi-final match up with Stockton.  The Lady Monarchs had a 25-12 lead at that point and increased it to 39-19 at halftime.  Senior Melissa Pfeifer had a big first half for TMP with 12 points.

TMP continued to roll in the second half both offensively and defensively.  TMP led by 31 points early in the fourth quarter which triggered a continuous clock.  Stockton made a late charge but it was to little, to late for the Lady Tigers as TMP picked up the 71-48 win.

Haven Hamilton led Stockton with 13 points and Madyson Koerner scored 16 to lead TMP.  Stockton will play Phillipsburg in the third place game Saturday afternoon in Plainville.  TMP has set up a much anticipated re-match with Hill City for the championship on Saturday night.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Boys:  TMP 55, Hill City 28

TMP used an incredible defensive performance against Hill City in Friday night’s semi-final round of the MCL Tournament in Plainville.  The Monarchs held the Ringnecks to only 11 first half points and just 28 points for the entire game.  The defensive effort was evident for all 32 minutes and Ryan Ruder spearheaded the effort by drawing five charges in the game.

TMP led 10-4 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 22-11 at halftime.  The second half did not improve for Hill City as TMP was able to extend their lead to as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter with the Monarchs eventually coming out on top 55-28.  TMP held Hill City’s leading scorer, Claiborne Kyles, to only 12 points for the game and the only Ringneck in double figures.

Jared Vitztum led the offensive charge tonight for TMP with 25 points.  The win was the ninth straight for the Monarchs.  Hill City will play Plainville in the third place game on Saturday while TMP will get the Norton Bluejays in the championship game.

Hays shoots past Hutchinson in Dodge City

By Dustin Armbruster

The Hays High Indians had little time to dwell on Thursday night’s loss to Wichita East, as they took on the Hutchinson Salthawks Friday at the Dodge City Tournament of Champions. Less than 18 hours after the loss Hays found themselves back on the court.

Hays burst out of the gates to a 13-0 lead on five points from each Drew Young and Shane Berens and capped by a Keith Dryden two handed dunk over the first four minutes of the game. Hays led after the first quarter 21-4.

Highlights

Hays pushed their lead to 41-18 at half time on the strength of three point shooting. Hays made seven second quarter field goals. Six of the made shots were three pointers.

Hays hit four more three pointers in the second half to push lead as high as 39 at the final buzzer 71-32. The Indians made 13 three pointers and shot 57% from the field for the game. Drew Young and Isaiah Nunnery each made four three pointers, Ethan Nunnery made three, Keith Dryden and Shane Berens added one apiece.

Coach Rick Keltner

Shane Berens scored a game high 18, Drew Young 16 and Isaiah Nunnery 15.

FHSU Wrestling falls to No. 5 UNK Lopers

FHSU Sports Information

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State battled fifth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney in an MIAA dual Thursday (Jan. 21) at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays, Kan. The dual came down to the last match with FHSU down five, but UNK held on for a 23-15 win.

The Lopers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead winning the first two matches. UNK’s Connor Bolling, the No. 6 wrestler at 125 pounds, defeated Adam Ludwin by decision 6-5 in a hard-fought battle. The No. 1 wrestler at 133 pounds, Daniel DeShazer, extended the Loper lead by defeating Anthony Calderon by a 10-5 decision.

A forfeit at 141 pounds by UNK knotted the score at 6-6. Bradley Little gave the Tigers their first lead of the night, 12-6, with a big pin of Brett Labudda at the 4:15 mark in the 149 pound bout.

The Lopers came back to win the next three matches to take the lead once again. UNK’s 157 pound wrestler Chase White defeated Joey Dozier in a 5-3 decision, cutting the Tiger lead to 12-9. UNK then took the lead for the second time as Devin Aguirre picked up four points with a 16-6 major decision victory in the 165 pound bout over Matt Ziegler. At 174 pounds Calvin Ochs of UNK defeated Dylan Wiesner with a 4-0 decision.

With the Tigers trailing 16-12, No. 6 ranked 184-pound wrestler Jon Inman brought the Tigers within one by defeating Zach Stodden with a 9-4 decision.

UNK pushed its lead to five as the No.1 ranked wrestler at 197 pounds, Romero Cotton, defeated Cash Drylie with the 13-4 major decision.

With one match to go the Tigers trailed 20-15 and freshman AJ Cooper needed a pin to complete the comeback. Despite a great opportunity in the first period, and another in the the third, Luke Petersen was too much and came away with the 11-4 decision to clinch the dual for the Lopers by the score of 23-15.

The Tigers moved to 5-3 overall, 0-2 in the MIAA, while the Lopers remain in first place in the MIAA with a record of 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Tigers head to Wichita, Kan., on Sunday (Jan. 24) for the Kansas Cup at Newman University.

Hays loses late lead; falls to Wichita East

By Dustin Armbruster

The last time Hays High and Wichita East met up in the Dodge City Tournament of Champions was the championship game of 2014. Like most teams the Indians and the Blue Aces appear in the tournament every other year. The Indians won the last match-up to claim the tournament crown.

Hays trailed early 8-3 getting only an Isaiah Nunnery three pointer in the first three plus minutes of the game. That is when Shane Berens took over. The junior scored the next 13 points for Hays, leading them to a 16-14 lead after one quarter.

Highlights

Berens picked up his second foul in the first quarter and did not play the second. The Indians though had their next four baskets scored by four different players, twice building a seven point lead. East cut the lead down to one but never took the lead and Hays led at half time 30-28.

The Indians pushed their lead to eleven points on four different occasions in the second half. Twice in the third quarter Hays pulled ahead by eleven before East trimmed the lead to 48-40 at the end of the third quarter.

Hays led by eleven two more times in the fourth quarter. The last a 61-50 lead with 1:30 remaining in the game. The Blue Aces finished the game with a 13-0 run over those final 90 seconds to take the win 63-61.
