FHSU’s Lunsford shares MIAA Player of the Week honor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State’s Paige Lunsford and Missouri Western’s Sarafina Handy have been named the MIAA Co-Women’s Basketball Athletes of the Week.

Lunsford nearly averaged a double-double in a pair of wins for FHSU over Northeastern State and Central Oklahoma. She averaged 18.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game for the week, while recording the first double-double of her career. She picked up the double-double in the 68-47 win over Northeastern State with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while adding a team-high four assists.

The 13 rebounds set a new career high for Lunsford.

In a 59-56 overtime win over Central Oklahoma, she scored a career-high 22 points and pulled down five rebounds, while adding three steals and two assists. She scored a go-ahead layup for FHSU with just over a minute left in regulation after the Tigers trailed by 14 with 6:10 to go in the third quarter. She hit a pair of key free-throws under a minute remaining in overtime to help keep FHSU in front for good.

Handy was clutch, making key baskets as the Griffon Women won on the road at Washburn and Emporia State this week, two places the program had not won since the 2003-04 season.

By ARNIE STAPLETON
AP Pro Football Writer

Broncos logoDENVER (AP) — Peyton Manning rescued the butter-fingered Broncos with a late touchdown drive and Denver advanced to the AFC championship game with a 23-16 win over Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

The Broncos (13-4) will host Tom Brady and the New England Patriots (13-4) next weekend.

Manning vs. Brady XVII.

With Denver down 13-12 with less than 10 minutes left, cornerback Bradley Roby punched the ball from Fitzgerald Toussaint’s arms and teammate DeMarcus Ware recovered at the Denver 35-yard line.

Then, Manning went to work, driving Denver to its only touchdown.

C.J. Anderson ran it in from the 1, and Demaryius Thomas — who was playing in front of his mother for the first time in his life — caught the 2-point conversion for a 20-13 lead with three minutes remaining.

Ware’s sack ended Pittsburgh’s next drive and Brandon McManus kicked his fifth field goal, tying the NFL playoff record.

Chris Boswell made a 47-yarder with 19 seconds left, but Anderson recovered the onside kick.

VanVleet has career-high 29, Wichita State beats ISU

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Fred VanVleet scored a career-high 29 points, Ron Baker added 16 and Wichita State beat Indiana State 82-62 on Sunday for its seventh straight victory.

Baker had a 3-point play during a 10-0 run early in the second half for a 51-37 lead. VanVleet tied his career best on a 3-pointer with eight minutes left and set the mark one minute later on a layup.

Anton Grady’s layup with 3:34 remaining gave Wichita State its largest lead of the game at 22 points.

Wichita State (12-5, 6-0 Missouri Valley) made just 41 percent of its shots but went 28 of 34 from the stripe (82 percent).

Brenton Scott led Indiana State (10-8, 4-2) with 24 points and had four 3-pointers. Devonte Brown added 14 points for the Sycamores, who trailed by just five points at halftime but were held to 8-of-29 shooting (27.6 percent) in the second half.

AP Sports Writer

Chiefs LogoFOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady hit Rob Gronkowski with two touchdown passes and reached over the goal line for another score Saturday to lead the New England Patriots into the AFC championship game with a 27-20 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s the fifth straight trip to the conference title game for the defending Super Bowl champions.

The Patriots (13-4) will meet the winner of Sunday’s game between Pittsburgh and Denver for a spot in Super Bowl 50 as they try to become the first repeat NFL champs since they did it in 2003-04.

After spending the last two weeks recovering from knee and back injuries, Gronkowski had touchdown catches from 8 and 16 yards The All-Pro tight end had seven receptions for 82 yards.

Kansas City (12-6) had won a franchise-record 11 consecutive games, including 30-0 at Houston last week in the wild-card round.

By GERARD WELLBROCK

HAYS, Kan. – The third-ranked Fort Hays State women overcame poor shooting and a double-figure second half deficit to beat Central Oklahoma 59-56 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Gross Coliseum. The Tigers (16-1, 10-1 MIAA) shot 25-percent from the floor but win their sixth straight and stay unbeaten at home.

Game Highlights

UCO (12-5, 6-5) MIAA) hit six 3-pointers in the first quarter and seven in the first half in building a 10-point halftime lead. Down four in the extra period, Chelsea Mason hit her only 3-pointer of the game to pull the Tigers within a point. It keyed a 7-0 which gave FHSU the lead for good.

Lunsford, who hit five straight free throws in the fourth quarter and overtime, scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Tigers.

Fort Hays State travels to No. 10 Missouri Western Thursday night in a battle for first place in the MIAA.

No. 17 Iowa State beats Kansas State

By TATE STEINLAGE
Associated Press

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Monte Morris scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half, Gorges Niang continued his form at Bramlage Coliseum with 15 points, and No. 17 Iowa State kept Kansas State at arm’s length in a 76-63 victory Saturday.

The win snapped a two-game skid for the Cyclones (13-4, 2-3 Big 12) after close losses to Texas and No. 22 Baylor, and prevented Iowa State’s first 1-4 league start since 2010-11.

Abdel Nader added 14 points and Matt Thomas had 11 for Iowa State, which shot 50.9 percent from the field — meeting its season average of 50.2. Three players finished with at least six rebounds.

First-year Iowa State coach Steve Prohm used a timeout with 9:35 play to spark a 7-0 run after Kansas State cut a double-digit lead to 50-45 on a basket by Justin Edwards.

Edwards scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Kansas State (11-6, 1-4).

Bragg, Diallo off bench help No. 1 Jayhawks beat TCU

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Wayne Selden Jr. scored 11 points, Carlton Bragg and Cheick Diallo provided a lift off the bench, and No. 1 Kansas slogged its way to a 70-63 victory over TCU on Saturday.

Bragg had 10 points, as did Perry Ellis and Devonte Graham, while Diallo had nine points and nine rebounds to help the Jayhawks (15-2, 4-1 Big 12) bounce back from a loss at West Virginia.

It was the 33rd consecutive win at Allen Fieldhouse for Kansas, matching the fourth-best streak in school history. It was also the Jayhawks’ seven straight win over the Horned Frogs.

Michael Williams had 13 points and Brandon Parrish and Chauncey Collins scored 11 apiece for TCU (9-8, 1-4), which remained close for a while thanks to a flurry of early 3-pointers.

The Jayhawks eventually took the perimeter away, and their size and depth in the post made it nearly impossible for TCU to score. Diallo finished with five blocks in just 21 minutes.
