Brock Long earns Little All-America first team honors from Associated Press

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State senior linebacker Brock Long earned yet another big honor on Thursday (Dec. 17) as he was named to the Associated Press (AP) Little All-America Team. Long is the first player at FHSU since Tyler Strong (offensive lineman) in 2003 to grace the AP Little All-America Team. He did it in grand fashion too, selected as one of the top three linebackers in the nation for NCAA Divisions II and III, along with the NAIA. That group includes nearly 500 schools nationwide.

Long is only the second player in FHSU history to earn first team honors on the AP Little All-America Team. The only other was quarterback Shawn Behr in 1995, the signal caller for Fort Hays State’s last team to make the NCAA Playoffs. This year, Long helped FHSU to its first postseason game since that 1995 season with an appearance in the Mineral Water Bowl. Long is the 26th AP Little All-America selection in Fort Hays State’s football history, dating all the way back to Floyd Sexton’s honorable mention selection in 1933.

Long set a new school record for tackles in a season with 171. It passed the former mark of 164 set by Alex Whitehill in 2011. But aside from the tackles, Long’s all-around defensive efforts were paramount in the eyes of the national media. Upon completion of the Mineral Water Bowl, Long finished the year with 21.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, and four forced fumbles to go with his 171 tackles. He ranks fourth nationally in total tackles, 13th in tackles for loss, 17th in sacks, and seventh in forced fumbles. It is rare to see a linebacker inside the top 20 of all four of those categories nationally.

This is Long’s second All-America First Team selection this year after earning the same distinction by the D2CCA. He led the team in tackles in nine of the 12 games this season and averaged 14.3 tackles per game, reaching double figures in tackles 10 times.

Long ranks fifth on the career tackles list for the NCAA era at FHSU with 264, accomplishing the feat in just two years. He is tied for 10th on the career sacks (13.5) and career tackles for loss (26.0) lists at FHSU for the NCAA era. For single-season accomplishments at FHSU, he is now the record holder for tackles and tackles for loss, while tying for second in sacks.

Tigers hold on for upset win at No. 15 Central Missouri

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Fort Hays State was held to just one field goal in the final 7:54 but made just enough free throws down the stretch to hold off No. 15 Central Missouri 69-68 Thursday night in Warrensburg. The Tigers second ever win at the UCM Multipurpose Building pushes their record to 8-2 and 2-2 in the MIAA. The Mules, who lost back-to-back home games for the first time since 2003-04, falls to 8-2 and 2-2.

Mark Johnson Postgame Interview

Game Highlights

The Tigers led by 14 on a couple of occasions in the second half only to see the Mules pull within one late. Following two Kyler Kinnamon missed free throws, the UCM had one final chance at the win but a pull up jumper left of the lane from D’Marnier Cunningham rimmed off to preserve the 69-68 victory.

FHSU raced out to an early 8-0 lead but went scoreless for over seven minutes to fall behind by seven. They responded with an 18-5 run and led by eight at halftime.

Jake Stoppel recorded his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Dom Samac added 15 points and Trey O’Neil 12, all in the second half.

The Tigers, who were outscored by 10 at the free throw line, shoot 46-percent for the game and hit 7-of-13 three-point attempts.

The Tigers improve to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in the MIAA while the Jennies fall to 2-7 and 1-3.

Tony Hobson Postgame Interview

Game Highlights

The Tigers used a 7-0 first quarter run to go up six and led 21-13 at the quarter break. A 14-2 second quarter run pushed the lead to 16 late in the second quarter. FHSU increased the lead to 21 inside three minutes to play in the third quarter but the Jennies scored the final 12 points to pull within 46-37 after three.

The Tigers dominated the glass, outrebounding UCM by nine and grabbed 23 offensive rebounds resulting in 17 second chance points. The Tigers shot 32-percent from the floor and were 8-of-30 from beyond the arc.

FHSU’s Long named a finalist for Cliff Harris Award

FHSU Sports Information

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Little Rock Touchdown Club and Wright, Lindsey & Jennings LLP announced the finalists for the 3rd annual Cliff Harris Award on Thursday. Senior linebacker Brock Long of Fort Hays State is a finalist for the award. He is one of 66 finalists overall and one of 29 finalists from NCAA Division II, narrowed from more than 100 total nominees for the award.

This award is presented to the nation’s top small college defensive player representing almost 500 colleges and universities from NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA colleges. A prestigious selection committee made up of former college and pro football greats will select the winner. In addition to the CLIFF HARRIS AWARD overall winner, the top vote getter from each division will also be announced. The Cliff Harris Award winner will be announced on Dec. 24 and honored at the Little Rock Touchdown Club’s annual awards banquet in February 2016. The winner will receive the $3,000 Cliff Harris Award trophy presented by Cliff Harris. The inaugural winner of the award in 2013 was Lindenwood University cornerback Pierre Desir, now with the Cleveland Browns. The 2014 winner was Darius Allen of Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Long put together a tremendous all-around season on defense, setting a new school record for tackles in a season with 171. It passed the former mark of 164 set by Alex Whitehill in 2011. But aside from the tackles, Long’s all-around defensive efforts have caught the eye of many on a national level.

Recently, Long was named an All-America First Team selection by D2CCA. He also earned Associated Press Little All-America First Team honors. He led the team in tackles in nine of the 12 games this season. He averaged 14.3 tackles per game and reached double figures in tackles 10 times.

Fort Hays State Women’s Basketball took over the No. 1 ranking in the latest NCAA Division II Media Poll, released on December 15. The media poll, only in its second year of existence, is sponsored by D2SIDA. FHSU is now No. 1 in both the WBCA Poll (which has served as the official national poll for years) and the D2SIDA Media Poll.

Fort Hays State overtook Limestone (S.C.) in the media poll this week. Neither team lost last week, but Fort Hays State jumped Limestone with four more voting points this week. There is a vast difference of where Limestone is located in the WBCA Poll compared to the D2SIDA Media Poll. Limestone is ranked No. 8 in the WBCA Poll.

The national media poll has 16 voters – 2 from each region – which is released each Tuesday.

Long earns All-America first team honors at linebacker from D2CCA

FHSU Sports Information

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Fort Hays State senior linebacker Brock Long has been selected to the D2CCA All-America Football Team for the 2015 season. Long is a First Team All-America selection at linebacker, putting together one of the most impressive all-around defensive efforts in the country this season. The D2CCA All-America Team is voted on by sports information directors throughout NCAA Division II nationwide.

Long had a tremendous senior season anchoring the Tiger defense at inside linebacker. He set a new school record for tackles in a season with 171, passing the former mark of 164 set by Alex Whitehill in 2011. But tackles were not the only category he soared in as he led the MIAA in tackles for loss, sacks, and forced fumbles at the end of the regular season.

Long led the team in tackles in nine of the 12 games this season. He averaged 14.3 tackles per game and reached double figures in tackles 10 times.

Long helped FHSU to its first postseason game in 20 years and an overall record of 8-4. FHSU finished third in the MIAA at 8-3.

Long was among eight players from the MIAA to be named to the D2CCA All-America Team. He was one of six to be named first team. Long was one of three players from FHSU to earn D2CCA All-Super Region 3 First Team honors, joining running back Shaquille Cooper and safety Daniel Lindsey. Matt Erbert was a second-team all-region selection.

Tiger women hold steady as nation’s top ranked team

FHSU Sports Information

Fort Hays State Women’s Basketball remained No. 1 in the latest WBCA Division II Poll, released on Tuesday (Dec. 15). The Tigers held on to the nation’s top ranking after defeating Nebraska-Kearney in an overtime thriller this past Saturday (Dec. 12) in Hays. The Tigers are now 9-0 overall in their second week as the No. 1 team in NCAA Division II.

The top four teams remained the same in this week’s poll with West Texas A&M at No. 2, Emporia State at No. 3, and Drury at No. 4. Fort Hays State received 16 of the possible 24 first-place votes from the voting panel nationwide. West Texas A&M received five of those first-place nods.

Fort Hays State will get a challenge this week as it heads on the road to Central Missouri and Southwest Baptist. It will be the final week of play before teams head into a two-week break for the holidays. Central Missouri enters Thursday’s game at 2-6 overall, 1-2 in the MIAA, while Southwest Baptist is currently 5-4 overall and 1-3 in the MIAA.

The 2-6 mark for Central Missouri can be deceiving as the Jennies have played four games against teams currently in the top 25 of the WBCA Poll. They have lost to Drury (No. 4), Quincy (No. 23), Missouri Western (No. 16), Emporia State (No. 3), and Minnesota State-Moorhead (currently receiving votes). Fort Hays State will be the third top-10 opponent UCM faces so far this season. The Tigers look to jump over a hurdle on Thursday, looking for their first win in Warrensburg since 2009-10. Central Missouri has claimed the last three meetings between the teams in Warrensburg. On Saturday, the Tigers enter with a two-game win streak over SBU in Bolivar.

Below is the WBCA Division II Poll for December 15, 2015.
