FHSU Athletics

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State had five student-athletes named to the D2CCA Men’s Soccer All-Central Region Team, released on Monday (Nov. 30). Four of the five earned first team honors and one garnered a second team selection. Mauricio Castorino was named the D2CCA Central Region Player of the Year after garnering MIAA Player of the Year and All-MIAA First Team honors. The D2CCA All-Region Team is voted on by the sports information directors of the Central Region in men’s soccer.

Earning first team honors were forwards Castorino and Maurizio Costa, midfielder David Lucio and defender Killian Gorman. All four also earned All-MIAA First Team honors. Luan Silva earned a second-team nod at defender. All five were instrumental in leading FHSU to a new program record for wins as the Tigers finished the year at 13-5-2.

Finishing the season with 10 goals and eight assists, Castorino led the MIAA in points for the season with 28. Castorino adds this honor on top of conference player of the year and all-conference first team honors. He was the MIAA Freshman of the Year in 2014 before earning conference player of the year honors this year.

Costa finished the year with 20 points, providing nine goals and two assists for the Tigers. He led the team in game-winning goals with three and buried all four penalty kick opportunities he had in the regular season.

Lucio earns an all-region nod for the second-straight year after second team honors last year. He is the only senior of the five to earn all-region honors this year. Lucio finished the year with 11 points, putting in four goals with three assists. Three of his points came during the postseason with a goal and an assist. He ranked fourth on the team in minutes played with 1584, while starting all 20 contests.

Gorman went the distance on the field for the Tigers in 2015, playing every minute possible as a defender. He helped the Tigers to a 1.24 goals against average and five shutouts. He had a goal in Fort Hays State’s 4-2 Central Regional Final win over Upper Iowa in the NCAA Tournament and finished the year with three points.

Silva was a more offensive minded defenseman for the Tigers, providing two goals and two assists for the season for a total of six points. He played 1,330 minutes and had one game-winning goal.

Castorino, Costa, Gorman, and Silva were all sophomores in 2015 and return to the team next year. Lucio departs after helping the Tigers to two-straight NCAA Central Region Championships and four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Royals and reliever Tim Collins agree to 1-year deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Relief pitcher Tim Collins and the Kansas City Royals have agreed to a one-year contract for $1,475,000.

Collins had Tommy John surgery on March 11 and missed Kansas City’s run to a World Series championship last season. The 5-foot-7 lefty has spent his entire major league career with the Royals, going 12-17 with a 3.54 ERA in 228 appearances over four seasons. He has 220 strikeouts and 121 walks in 211 innings.

The 26-year-old Collins had been eligible for salary arbitration. He can earn a $50,000 bonus for making the All-Star team.

The terms of Collins’ deal are the same as his 2015 contract.

Kansas City has seven players still eligible for arbitration: third baseman Mike Moustakas; outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Jarrod Dyson; pitchers Louis Coleman, Danny Duffy and Greg Holland; and catcher Drew Butera.

Jayhawks prepare for first game with Diallo on floor

By DAVE SKRETTA

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Even though the NCAA has cleared five-star prospect Cheick Diallo to begin playing for No. 4 Kansas this week, it hasn’t stopped Jayhawks coach Bill Self ripping its investigation.

During a news conference Monday, Self called the months-long saga an exercise in frustration, and that “I don’t think anything done by the NCAA was done in the kid’s best interest at all.”

The NCAA forced Diallo to miss the first four games this season while examining coursework from a New York prep school. Ultimately, it ruled he had accepted a small amount of improper benefits and docked the 6-foot-9 forward from Mali a fifth game.

With all of that in the past, Diallo finally will take the floor Tuesday night when the Jayhawks (4-1) play Loyola at Allen Fieldhouse.

KU’s Selden earns Big 12 weekly honor

Kansas Athletics

IRVING, Texas – Kansas guard Wayne Selden, Jr. has been named the Phillips 66 co-Big 12 Player of the Week the league office announced Monday. Selden earned the honor in a vote by a media panel which covers the league and won the accolade along with Iowa State’s Monté Morris.

Selden was named co-MVP of the Maui Invitational after averaging 19.3 points as the Jayhawks won the title. The Roxbury, Massachusetts junior shot 66.7 percent from the field, including 70.6 percent from 3-point range, while adding 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per contest. He had his top performance in the championship game, matching his career-high with 25 points in a victory over No. 19 Vanderbilt. Selden scored at least 15 points in each victory in Maui and leads Kansas with 17.0 points per game. He earned co-MVP honors with teammate Frank Mason III.

This is the second weekly honor for Selden from the conference office. He was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Jan. 13, 2014, during his freshman season.

Morris averaged 16 points, 7.7 assists and four rebounds on his way to earning Emerald Coast Classic Most Outstanding Player honors.

K-State’s Burns picks up third-straight Big 12 weekly honor

Kansas State Athletics

MANHATTAN, Kan.For the third-consecutive week, Kansas State senior Morgan Burns was named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week – the first player in school history to earn three-straight conference weekly honors – following his performance in K-State’s 45-14 win over Kansas, the conference office announced.

It was the first time any Big 12 player had won three-straight weekly honors since Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell in 2008. With Burns’ three honors in addition to Jack Cantele’s accolade following the Louisiana Tech game, K-State now has an impressive 19 Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors since 2011 (3.8 per year).

Burns was all over the field against the Jayhawks as he got the game underway by tackling the KU punter for a loss and forcing a fumble on a Jayhawk punt attempt, which then led to the game’s first touchdown on the next play. Later in the first quarter, Burns recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown, K-State’s nation-leading 100th non-offensive touchdown since 1999.

Two plays after the score, Burns intercepted a second-down pass attempt. He finished the game with three additional tackles and a pass breakup in addition to his fumble return score, forced fumble and interception.

K-State hosts the regular-season finale this Saturday against West Virginia in Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The game will kick at 3:30 p.m., and will also be broadcast by FS1.

Broncos beat Patriots on Anderson’s OT run

Broncos logoDENVER (AP) – Tom Brady lost yet another one of his trusted targets and this time he also lost a game.

C.J. Anderson scored on a 48-yard run with 12:32 left in overtime, powering the Denver Broncos past the New England Patriots 30-24 on a snowy Sunday night.

Watching from the cozy indoors at field level was Peyton Manning as Brock Osweiler and the Broncos (9-2) overcame an early 14-0 deficit and handed the Patriots (10-1) their first loss since 2014.

Now, the Carolina Panthers (11-0) are the NFL’s only remaining unbeaten team.

Osweiler threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Bubba Caldwell with 1:09 left in regulation to put the Broncos up 24-21. But Brady, playing without injured star tight end Rob Gronkowski, needed just five plays to drive the Patriots 51 yards and into range for Stephen Gostowski’s 47-yard field goal that tied it at the end of regulation.

New England won the coin toss and elected to receive, but thanks to a sack by Von Miller, Denver forced a three-and-out and, on third-and-1 from the New England 48, Anderson raced around the left sideline and into the north end zone.

Gronkowski injured his right knee with 2:49 left in regulation and was carted off. There was no immediate word on his status.
