Tulsa upsets No. 9 Wichita State

TULSA, Okla. (AP) – Shaquille Harrison scored 20 points and Marquel Curtis added 16 to help Tulsa upset No. 9 Wichita State 77-67 on Tuesday night, overcoming three years of frustration against the Shockers, who had won a school record seven straight in the long-running series.

The Shockers (1-1) were led by Ron Baker with 23 points and Anton Grady with 18. All-conference guard Fred VanVleet, hobbled by a sprained ankle and sore hamstring, added 11.

A four-point play by junior college transfer Pat Birt at 9:18 gave Tulsa a 57-51 advantage and the Hurricane slowly built on the advantage until it reached 69-57 with 4:02 left on two free throws by Harrison. WSU never came closer than nine points down the stretch.

Birt finished with 14 points and James Woodard had 13 for Tulsa, 2-0, which outrebounded Wichita State 38-32 and shot 46 percent to WSU’s 36.4 percent (20-for-55).

Tiger football team bowl bound

There will be a lot of memorable plays and dates and names from this year’s record-setting season for the Fort Hays State University football team. But Tiger fans might want to remember a name that has nothing to do with the FHSU program.

Vic Bonuchi is a former high school coach from Excelsior Springs, Mo., who convinced townspeople to bring back the Mineral Water Bowl in the early 1990s after a 16-year hiatus.

Started as a high school all-star game in 1948, it switched to a small-college post-season game in 1954, but interest in the game waned in the early ’70s, and it was discontinued after the 1975 game. It was resurrected in 1992 and has been played for 19 consecutive years.

Roger Siegel, director of the Mineral Water Bowl, said there are only three bowl games for NCAA Division II teams in the country. Invited to the Mineral Water Bowl are teams from two of the top football conferences in NCAA D-II — the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Ticket information is listed below.

FHSU earned the right to play in the 2015 Mineral Water Bowl — the 50th year it will be played — by upsetting nationally ranked No. 20 University of Central Missouri 28-14 on Senior Day Nov. 14 at Lewis Field Stadium.

Thirteen seniors were honored in their final game at Lewis Field before that game, and then the Tigers proceeded to beat the Mules at home for the first time in 50 years.
Less than 24 hours later, those seniors learned their careers were not yet over.

As the top finishing team in the MIAA that did not qualify for the NCAA Division II playoffs, the Tigers were invited to the Mineral Water Bowl, where they will meet the NSIC’s University of Minnesota-Duluth at noon Dec. 5 in Excelsior Springs. Both teams bring 8-3 records into the game.

The game will have a little bit of hometown flavor for FHSU fans.

“We have a big alumni base in the Kansas City area,” said Curtis Hammeke, FHSU athletic director. “We usually have a good following at the MIAA basketball tourney in Kansas City. So we’re hoping to get some fans from there to the football game.”

The stadium itself also will have a welcoming effect to the Fort Hays State contingent. The game will be played at Tiger Stadium, home of the Excelsior Springs High School team that features an artificial turf field and chair-back seats from the Kansas City Chiefs Arrowhead Stadium.

The home team for the Mineral Water Bowl alternates every other year between the MIAA and the NSIC teams. Minnesota-Duluth will be the designated home team this year. However, Siegel said the MIAA representative is given the home side of the field at the stadium, which holds 2,300 fans.

Because of proximity, MIAA teams traditionally bring more fans than those from the NSIC. While FHSU fans have less than 300 miles to travel for the bowl game, Duluth, Minn. — situated on the banks of Lake Superior — is 566 miles away.

Excelsior Springs, population 11,000, has a limited number of hotel rooms, so Siegel suggested for fans to seek hotel accommodations at nearby Liberty, Mo., 13 miles southwest of Excelsior Springs.

The FHSU Athletic Department and Alumni Association are working on the possibility of scheduling buses to transport fans to the game. There will be alumni events scheduled around the game, as well as a send-off for the team, and specific details will be announced once they are finalized.

While it will be the first time for FHSU football to make the post-season since 1995, Hammeke is no stranger to bowl games. During his stint as athletic director at Butler County Community College in El Dorado from 1998-2003, the Grizzlies played in bowl games all five years.

“It’s a great experience for the kids and the fan base, too,” said Hammeke, who is in his 12th year at Fort Hays State.

Opportunities to make history will abound at the bowl game for this Fort Hays State team, which already tied the school record for most victories in a season with its 8-3 regular-season record. A victory over the Bulldogs would give the 2015 Tigers the new school record.

Moments after FHSU received the bowl game invitation Sunday afternoon, the Tiger football team took the floor at Gross Memorial Coliseum, at halftime of the Tiger basketball game vs. the University of Sioux Falls.

Every single member of the Tiger football team was announced, and then PA announcer Ken Windholz roared out the news of the bowl bid, which was greeted with loud cheers.
Soon afterward, the Internet site for the Mineral Water Bowl began taking hits from fans trying to glean information about the game and other activities surrounding the bowl.

A total of 500 tickets were sent to each school, and Hammeke said game tickets for $10 each are available through the FHSU Athletic Department by calling 785-628-4050.

The three-day event includes a Friday evening banquet for the teams, coaches and fans. Tickets for $25 per person can be purchased by contacting Siegel either by phone at 816-630-9225 or by email at [email protected]. The banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Excelsior Springs High School Commons.

Siegel emphasized that while the Mineral Water Bowl website shows a link for buying bowl game merchandise, those items instead will be available for purchase at team headquarters, the historical Elms Hotel & Spa, and at the game. Memorabilia will include T-shirts and sweatshirts, baseball caps and stocking caps, and glassware and coffee mugs.

Five FHSU players named to All-MIAA volleyball team

FHSU Sports Information
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State had five players named to the 2015 All-MIAA Volleyball Team, released on Tuesday (Nov. 17). Earning second team honors were Crystal Whitten, Mallory Flagor, and Rebekah Spainhour, while Megan Anderson and Sydney Dixon were honorable mention picks. All five have been Fort Hays State’s top offensive threats throughout the season.

Whitten earned second team honors in her first year on the floor for FHSU. She has a team-high 407 kills, 423 digs and 27 service aces entering the MIAA Tournament. She averages 3.42 kills and 3.55 digs per set. In the final regular season match, Whitten went past 1,000 kills for her collegiate career. She had nearly 600 in her two years at Pittsburg State (2012 and 2013). She has 19 double-doubles in kills and digs this year.

Flagor earned second team honors at rightside hitter for the second straight year. She has 387 kills, 308 digs, and 83 blocks entering the MIAA Tournament. She averages 3.25 kills and 2.59 digs per set. Flagor became the eighth player in FHSU history to reach 1,000 kills in a career (all in an FHSU jersey). She has 11 double-doubles in kills and digs this season.

Spainhour picks up her first All-MIAA honor, earning second team honors at middle hitter. She led the team in the regular season in hitting percentage (.296) while putting down 281 kills. She is tied for the team lead in blocks with 88 and leads the team in solo blocks with 21.

Anderson picks up an honorable mention nod in her first year with the Tigers. A junior college All-American, Anderson gives the Tigers a dual threat at middle hitter. She is tied for the team lead in blocks with 88 and she put down 163 kills with a .290 hitting percentage.

Dixon also received an honorable mention pick in her first collegiate season. The true freshman had 185 kills on the outside for the Tigers, while also providing 29 blocks in the regular season.

13 Tigers named to All-MIAA football team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State placed 13 players on the 2015 All-MIAA football team released Tuesday. The Tigers had three named to the first team, two on the second team and two selected to the third team. Six Tigers where honorable mention picks.

Earning first team honors were running back Shaquille Cooper who was the only unanimous pick on offense. Joining him is offensive lineman Matt Erbert and defensive back Daniel Lindsey. Linebacker Brock Long and quarterback Treveon Albert were second team selections. Third-team selections went to defensive lineman Nathan Shepherd and defensive back Doyin Jibowu. Honorable mention selections were offensive linemen Luke Edney and Richard “Chico” Feltenberger, defensive linemen Sie Doe, Jr., linebacker Alex Schmidtberger, kicker Drew P’Brien and punter Jordon Stangler.

Cooper led the MIAA with 1,406 rushing yards, averaging 127.8 yards per game and ranks seventh nationally in rushing yards. His 1,406 yards are the third most in a single-season in FHSU history.

Erbert earned a first team selection on the offensive line after a second team selection in 2014. He has helped the Tigers lead the MIAA in rushing yards per game (264.5) during the regular season, while ranking 12th nationally. He has started 22 consecutive games on the line for FHSU dating back to the start of the 2014 season.

Lindsey earned first team honors after an honorable mention nod last year. He finished the regular season with 80 tackles, including 11 for loss, one interception, and two fumble recoveries. Of the 80 tackles, 50 have been solo tackles. On special teams, he has four blocked kicks (ranks 4th nationally), just one short of the single-season school record.

Long is a second team selection at linebacker after an honorable mention selection last year. He currently has 159 tackles (5th most nationally). Long has recorded 21 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, four forced fumbles (all which lead the MIAA and rank in the top 15 nationally), two fumble recoveries, and one interception.

Albert earned a second-team selection at quarterback after finishing the regular season with 1,674 passing yards and 1,161 rushing yards, giving FHSU two 1,000-yard rushers for just the second time in school history. Albert goes into the Mineral Water Bowl just nine yards shy of the career total offense record at FHSU with 7,966 career yards (5,634 passing, 2,332 rushing). He is now seventh on the all-time rushing yards list at FHSU and owns the career passing touchdowns record with 54, five better than the 49 produced by both Robert Long and Mike Garrison.

Shepherd earned third-team honors in his first season with the Tigers on the defensive line. He recorded 55 tackles and three sacks, while also blocking two kicks on special teams. He had five or more tackles in seven games during the regular season from his defensive tackle position.

Jibowu earned third-team honors at defensive back. He finished the regular season with 82 tackles to rank second on the team. He added three sacks and two key interceptions in Fort Hays State’s Mineral Water Bowl clinching win over Central Missouri in the regular season finale.

Edney and Feltenberger gathered honorable mention selections on the offensive line. They give FHSU three all-conference selections on the offensive line this season, helping produce the conference’s top rushing attack. Edney, a senior, started all games at right tackle and has made 33 consecutive starts on the line dating back to the start of the 2013 season. Feltenberger, a junior, missed three games due to injury this year after starting the first two, but battled through it to start the final six games at left guard.

Doe, Jr., has been a great addition at defensive end this season for the Tigers. He recorded 64 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and 14.0 tackles for loss in the regular season. His speed and shifty nature gave offensive lines a challenge and he was huge in the Mineral Water Bowl clinching win for FHSU over Central Missouri with three sacks and eight tackles.

Schmidtberger earned an honorable mention selection for the second straight year at linebacker. He missed three games to injury, but still managed to record 72 tackles (9.0 per game). He added 2.5 sacks, an interception, and five tackles for loss.

O’Brien earned honorable mention status at kicker. He became the all-time scoring leader at FHSU in 2015, passing the old mark of 220 set by Bob Johnson from 1963-1966. He now has 242 career points with 146 PAT conversions and 32 field goals. He also holds the school’s kicking points and kicking PAT records. He has 66 points this season.

Stangler earned honorable mention honors at punter. The senior averaged 38.8 yards per punt in the regular season with a season-long of 67 yards. Six of his kicks went over 50 yards and 13 resulted in drives starting inside the 20.

Edwards, Wade help Kansas State top Columbia

By TATE STEINLAGE
Associated Press

MANHATTAN, Kansas (AP) – Justin Edwards scored 19 points, true freshman Dean Wade connected on a 3-pointer in crunch time, and Kansas State outlasted pesky Columbia 81-71 on Monday night.

Wade finished with 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting, and Wesley Iwundu had 16 to go along with 4 rebounds and 4 assists, as the Wildcats shot 50 percent from the floor (30 of 60).

Spurred by an 8-of-11 start shooting, Kansas State jumped out to a 21-12 lead midway through the first half. The Wildcats held a 40-35 at the half.

Edwards scored 9 of the Wildcats first 11 points out of the break, part of an 11-2 run, to take a 51-39 lead with 17:03 to play. Columbia hit a trio of 3-pointers to get within three points, but four turnovers and a late 9-0 Kansas State run sealed it.

Luke Petrasek led Columbia with 19 points and eight rebounds while Alex Rosenberg scored 16 points.

Indian’s Isaiah Nunnery becomes a Tiger

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

When the offer was made, it was simply to good to pass up on, that’s why on Monday Hays High senior Isaiah Nunnery signed his National Letter of Intent to play college basketball at Fort Hays State University. Nunnery knew he wanted to play college ball and when factoring in his family, the city of Hays and his family’s history at FHSU the fit was perfect for the 6’3″ guard that has played both point and shooting guard.

Isaiah Nunnery

Both Nunnery’s mom and dad competed at Fort Hays. Christin, a former Hays High Indian and current HHS volleyball coach, played volleyball for the black and gold. Tim was a standout on the FHSU basketball team.

Isaiah has been playing on varsity for Rick Keltner’s Indians since his freshman year. Nunnery was part of the 2013-14 team that went undefeated in the regular season and finished fourth at the 5A state tournament.

Coach Rick Keltner

Nunnery has played in 69 games in his career. In those games he has scored in double figures 19 times, 18 of those coming in his junior season where he also finished fifth in single season assists. His 467 career point put him 36th all time, he is also 8th in assists and 12th in steals, with still a full season to go. Practice started on Monday with two-a-days for the upcoming season that begins December 3rd with the Hays City Shoot-Out.

Hays Indian Kylie Brown signs with FHSU volleyball

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

Kylie Brown has been part of a class that made volleyball a priority since the sixth grade.  With that dedication Brown and the rest of her teammates turned a ten win Hays High volleyball program into one of the top ten volleyball teams in class 4A-DI this past season.

Kylie Brown

Also with that dedication has come the opportunity to play volleyball on the collegiate level.  Monday Brown decided to continue her career at Fort Hays State University, signing her National Letter of Intent.  Brown joins fellow senior Madison Prough who has also inked her letter to play for the Tigers.

Coach Christin Nunnery

Brown patrolled the middle of the front row for Hays High with a high level of success.  As a junior Brown set the school record for blocks in a single season.  She missed six matches as a senior due to injury, but according to her coach Christin Nunnery, she was on pace to break her own record in 2015.  Brown likely won’t be playing the middle at FHSU and will switch to right side hitter but was willing to play the position in high school to help fill the team’s need.

Brown was named to the honorable mention team for 4A-DI this past season and first team on the Western Athletic Conference honors.

FHSU’s Jibowu named MIAA/Astroturf Defensive Athlete of the Week

FHSU Athletics

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State redshirt-freshman defensive back Doyin Jibowu was named the MIAA/Astroturf Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday (Nov. 16) for his efforts in the 28-14 win over No. 20 ranked Central Missouri this past Saturday.

Jibowu had a great all-around day on defense. He recorded two interceptions, a sack, and five tackles. With 7:00 remaining in the game and FHSU up 28-14, UCM had a golden opportunity to pull withing one touchdown. Jibowu made a great read on UCM quarterback Garrett Fugate as he jumped into the air at the FHSU 9-yardline and intercepted a pass before it crossed the line of scrimmage and returned it 14 yards. It set up a drive that consumed nearly five minutes, helping FHSU seal the win and its first postseason game since 1995.

The redshirt-freshman had two of the four interceptions thrown by UCM in the game. Fugate of UCM had just three interceptions all season before throwing three against the Tigers. Jibowu helped FHSU limit UCM to just 268 total yards, the first team to hold the MIAA’s top offensive attack under 300 yards for the season.

K-State’s Burns named Big 12 Player of the Week

Kansas State Athletics

MANHATTAN, Kan.Following a school-record breaking performance last week at Texas Tech, senior kick returner Morgan Burns was named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

The honor was the first in Burns’ career, while it was the second for the Wildcats this season after place kicker Jack Cantele was honored following the Louisiana Tech game. K-State has had 17 special teams player-of-the-week honors since 2011, while the Wildcats have had at least two accolades on special teams over the last eight seasons.

Burns recorded a school-record 221 kickoff-return yards against the Red Raiders, breaking the previous record held by Aubrey Quarles, who had 197 yards at North Texas in 2010. Burns took the first Texas Tech kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown, his second kickoff-return score this year after returning the season-opening kickoff 100 yards for a score against South Dakota.

Burns’ yardage total was the most by a Big 12 player since Texas’ Fozzy Whitaker went for 252 yards against Oklahoma State in 2010, while it is the third-highest total in the nation this season.

With his effort against the Red Raiders, Burns moved into fifth place in school history in career kickoff-return yards (1,112), while he entered the top-10 list for kickoff-return yards for a season as he is now fourth (678). He also moved into a tie for second place in school history in season kickoff-return touchdowns and into sole possession of third place for a career.

Kansas State takes on Iowa State this Saturday in an 11 a.m., contest at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The game can be seen nationally on FS1.

Enoch’s game-winner lifts Tigers past Sioux Falls

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

HAYS, Kan. – For a second straight day, the Fort Hays State Tigers pull off a narrow win over a Northern Sun Conference foe at Gross Coliseum. Kenny Enoch’s jumper with one-second to play lifted the Tigers to a 62-60 win over Sioux Falls, moving them to 2-0 on the young season.

Craig Nicholson was cut off trying to drive to basket and dished to Enoch who dribbled to his left and hit the game-winner from just inside the arc on the right wing. After the officials put 0.9 seconds on the clock, the Tigers knocked the Cougars baseball pass away to secure the win.

Game Highlights

USF used an early 14-2 run to build a 14-4 lead in the first five minutes. The Tigers answered with 12 unanswered to take a 16-14 lead and trailed by just two at halftime. A 13-0 FHSU run spanning each half gave the Tigers their largest lead at 39-33 with 18:04 to play. USF responded by scoring the next six points and neither team would lead by more than four the rest of the way.

Rob Davis hit three 3-point field goals and led the Tigers with 13 points. Dom Samac scored 12 and Craig Nicholson 10, all in the second half. Hadley Gillum, who hit a key shot after a blocked 3-pointer then blocked a potential game-tying shot down the stretch, led the Tigers with seven rebounds.

Mack Johnson led the Cougars in scoring with 16 points, while Jordan Stotts had 12 and Daniel Hurtt had 10. Kebu Johnson led USF in rebounding with nine.

Fort Hays State (2-0) continues their nine-game homestand to start the season Wednesday night against Central Christian College at 7 pm.
