Chiefs crush Manning, Broncos

By ARNIE STAPLETON
AP Pro Football Writer

KC Chiefs LogoDENVER (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs prevented Peyton Manning from getting the one record he really wanted, trouncing the Denver Broncos 29-13 Sunday on the strength of five interceptions and five field goals.

Manning entered the day with 71,836 yards through the air, 2 shy of Brett Favre’s record and tied with Favre with 186 victories.

He finished the day with just 35 yards on 5-of-20 passing, four interceptions, two sacks and an almost unheard-of zero passer rating before being benched late in the third quarter.

The only highlight for Manning was his milestone: a 4-yard pass to running back Ronnie Hillman. Even that didn’t come until he’d thrown his first interception, gotten sacked and

FHSU football accepts Mineral Water Bowl invitation

FHSU Athletics

Mineral Water Bowl LogoEXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. – With their 28-14 win over No. 20 ranked Central Missouri on Saturday, Fort Hays State locked up the bid to the Mineral Water Bowl on December 5, 2015. The Tigers will face Minnesota-Duluth from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Both teams enter the game at 8-3 overall. Minnesota-Duluth was the champion of the North Division in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. This will be the 50th Mineral Water Bowl Game. Tickets are $10.00 and can be purchase at the gate or by calling 816-519-5627. For more information visit www.mineralwaterbowl.net.

Fort Hays State reaches the postseason for the first time in 20 years. The last postseason game occurred in 1995 when the Tigers were selected to the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Although the Tigers came up just short of the playoffs this year, they were the top finishing team in the MIAA outside teams selected to the NCAA Playoffs. Northwest Missouri State (No. 1 seed) and Emporia State (No. 6 seed) will represent the MIAA in the playoffs.

Fort Hays State tied Central Missouri for third in the MIAA, but takes the automatic bid to the Mineral Water Bowl by virtue of defeating Central Missouri head-to-head. The Tigers will now be looking for their first-ever postseason win at the NCAA Division II level.

The only two postseason games the Tigers have ever played as members of NCAA Division II occurred in 1993 and 1995. Both were in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. In 1993, FHSU fell at California-Davis 37-34, and then in 1995, fell at Texas A&M-Kingsville 59-28.

The Tigers also have a chance to do something no other team in Fort Hays State football history has done, and that is reach nine wins. This year’s team has already matched the school record for wins in a season with eight. The feat has now been accomplished seven times (1935, 1983, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 2015).

The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs will be making their second appearance in the Mineral Water Bowl. Head coach Curt Wiese in his third year as UMD’s head coach brings a 32-6 record into the game. Coach Wiese has guided the Bulldogs to two NCAA Division II Playoff appearances, one NSIC Championship and two NSIC North division titles.

Albert leads FHSU to win over No. 20 Central Missouri

HAYS, Kan. – Senior quarter Treveon Albert accounted for all four Fort Hays State touchdowns, leading the Tigers to a 28-14 win over No. 20 Central Missouri Saturday afternoon in front of 2,975 at Lewis Field. They finish the season 8-3, tying the school record for wins, and tie for third place in the MIAA with the Mules, their highest finish ever.

Chris Brown Postgame Interview

Game Highlights

Albert threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Derek Kendall-Campbell with 0:13 to play in the first quarter to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead. His 44-yard strike to senior Garrett Holle, following a Doyin Jibowu interception, gave FHSU a 14-0 lead with 6:44 to play in the first half.

Up 14-7 at the half, Albert scored on touchdowns runs of one and 17 yards to push the lead to 28-7.

The Mules got a 13-yard TD pass from Garrett Fugate to Kyle Echols following a Shaquille Cooper fumble to pull within four with 12:13 to play, but the Tiger defense picked off two passes on the Mules final two possessions to end any comeback.

The Tiger came up big all day, picking off four passes and recovering a fumble while sacking Fugate five times. The Tigers held the MIAA leader in total offense to 268 yards, 220 below their season average and 23 points below their season scoring average.

Brock Long recorded 17 tackles and is just two shy of tying Alex Whitehill’s single-season record of 164 set in 2011. He also recorded 0.5 sacks and is 2.5 behind the single-season record of nine held by Trevell Smittick (1998).

Doyin Jibowo had two interceptions and Sie Doe recorded three sacks and four tackles for loss.

The Tigers rushed for 376 yards led by Shaquille Copper’s ninth career 100-yards game, going for 158 on 26 carries. Albert added 89 and Kendall-Campbell 72. Albert threw for 115 yards with one interception.

Fort Hays State’s win over Central Missouri was the first in Hays since 1965. The Mules had won five straight in Hays, all in MIAA play since the Tigers joined the conference in 2006. FHSU has now won two straight against UCM after losing eight straight.

Victoria headed back to state with win over Wallace Co.

For the eighth time in school history and the second straight year the Victoria Knights are headed to the state championship game after a 40-8 win over Wallace County Friday night in Sharon Springs.

Early on the first drive of the game Knights starting quarterback Joe Dortland went down with an injury forcing Victoria to turn to Brady Dinkel who accounted for five touchdowns in the win.

Dinkel, who suffered an injury in the Knights week-one win over Central Plains and missed six regular season games, threw a pair of first quarter touchdowns, one to Taylor Corley for 38 yards and a second to Grant Weber for 11 yards putting Victoria up 16-0 after the first quarter.

The Knights offense would stall in the second quarter with a fumble inside the red zone and a number of untimely negative plays. Wallace County took advantage of the Knights struggles late in the second quarter with a 67-yard drive capped off with a 7-yard touchdown pass cutting the lead to 16-8 at halftime.

With the momentum on their side coming out of the halftime break it appeared the Wildcats were in a position to make it a game but the Knights defense forced a three-and-out on Wallace County’s first possession of the second half. Victoria’s offense took the ball right down the field, on their first possession of the second half and capped off a nine-play, 45-yard drive with a 15-yard Dinkel touchdown run putting the Knights up 24-8.

Dinkel added a second touchdown run in the third quarter giving the Knights a 32-8 heading into the fourth quarter. Victoria then put the game away in the fourth quarter with Dinkel, for a second time in the game finding Grant Weber for a 29-yard touchdown reception.

Dinkel finished with a game-high 70 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. He was also 6-of-7 passing for 117 yards and two touchdowns.

The Knights move to 11-0 on the season and have now won 23-straight games. The win also sets up a rematch of last year’s state championship game in which beat Attica/Argonia.

The 8-Man Division 2 state championship game kicks off at 3:30 Saturday Nov. 21.

Pair of Indians sign to play FHSU baseball

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

They’ve been playing baseball together since both were seven years old. Friday, Hays High seniors Jared Haynes and Cole Schumacher signed their National Letters of Intent to play baseball for Fort Hays State University.

Haynes got his first chance to play on the varsity level midway through his sophomore year. Due to injuries, Haynes got an opportunity to be in the line-up of the second game of a double header with Garden City. He hasn’t left the lineup since. In that first varsity game Haynes went collected two hits, scored a run and stole a base.

Jared Haynes

Haynes selected FHSU on the basis that it just felt right and his father played football for the Tigers as well. He is a career .333 hitter. Haynes has also appeared on the mound in two games. Once in a starting role and once in relief.

Coach Frank Leo About Jared Haynes

Schumacher has seen varsity time since his freshman season. Used primarily as a pitcher that season, he did bat in nine games. It was his sophomore season that started out the new Tiger with a bang. Schumacher hit safely in 15 of the first 16 games that year. His junior year did not yield the number of hits one would expect out of a lead-off hitter, but thanks to a keen eye Schumacher was able to walk 25 times to tied the school record for walks in a single season. His 36 career free passes has him just two outside of the career top ten list.

Cole Schumacher

Schumacher is a career .291 hitter and has also seen time on the mound. He posted a 1.57 ERA as a junior posting a 5-2 record. Schumacher threw a team high 50.2 innings last season striking out 45 and walking 19. For his career Schumacher is 11-2 with a 1.74 ERA over 92.1 innings in 22 total appearances.

Cole’s older sister Katelyn is a member of the KU softball team.

The Railroaders also had two players named the both the second team offense and defense; Brendon Brenner at receiver and defensive line and Dylan Haas on the offensive line and at linebacker.
